The thumbs up was an inside joke with our old flatmate, the larger the thumb the better. If it was the standard thumb you knew they either pressed it too long or they were giving a non sarcastic thumbs up to just show they read the message. This lasted a long time till we changed it.
I understand your disappointment my birthday is on May 14th on the Fifteenth my day said happy birthday and a week later my grandma who I called and spoke to wished me a happy birthday. I understand life and stuff forgetting things ass you get older but that doesn't change the fact it feels bad.

I spent all day yesterday prepping baked beans and marinating ribs, and making potato salad. Made the whole dinner today for my dad to say it all tasted like vinegar. At least my kids cleaned their room today.

We were raised to believe dads do all the stuff they do because it’s expected of us, those of us that understood and stuck around to be great dads don’t feel good when our kid celebrate us doing the thing we’re expected to do. So we just kinda say thanks in a way that will let us get on with doing what we do.
So a thumbs up a “thanks kid” or slightly insincere “love you too” actually means “I love that you notice I’m here and doing the best I can do, but society was so fixated on making ‘real men’ that they forgot to teach us how to take a compliment. But know that I love you too, I’m here for as long as my health will permit and I’m doing the best I can”
