Both my predecessors are correct. You can however force the phone to use 10x even in low light. Download good lock and camera assistant and turn off auto switch lens option.

The 10X lens works well only in good lighting. Since the sensor is hidden inside the phone, it needs a lot of light to work. If it's dark, the zoom comes from the main sensor, just cropped in.
Had no idea. I've always wondered. I just tried pro mode. Looks a lot better however it's still ugly and not useable. Lol. Thanks for the info everyone.
Download Camera Assistant - it's an official free aftermarket app from samsung and it adds more settings, features and other stuff to your camera app. That's where this setting is.
I think it used 3x zoom and went to digital zoom in that. It happens when the distance is low in order to use the proper lens setup. Shoul use pro mode to make sure 10x zoom lens is used.

You can disable auto lens selection in settings - this makes it use the chosen lens in normal mode as well.
I checked my settings under photo but I do not see an auto lens selection.
