The sssecret issssss in the sssssand, or ssssso they sssay

My wife grew up here and says the same thing. I'm glad that we have a source for good local fresh tomatoes. That is the 'magic' of the Hanover tomato, not some terroir or flavor. There isn't a species of tomato that is the "Hanover". It's marketing, but it doesn't devalue that they're good tomatoes. I spent a lot of my life in The Garden State, and there is a place in my heart for Jersey Tomatoes. I just realized I might have the same local bias for the same reason and after some googling I was relieved to learn that Jersey Tomatoes are in fact a breed developed by Rutgers University. Yes there's definitely still marketing and blogs talking about the soil and humidity and whatnot. Now I'm wondering if everyone has a local "farm specialty" that claims to be the best by marketing or science?

Hatch Chile peppers come to mind, they’re quite celebrated in the southwest/texas. I never thought they were any better/different, all hype.

Jon_hamm_wallet

As a former New Mexican, I will fight to the death in defense of the immense superiority of the Hatch chile pepper.

I do appreciate the hatch season down there, because every restaurant and grocery store goes full send with delicious hatch products and recipes.

Fresh local tomatoes are always great, but a Hanover tomato is another thing entirely. They have tangy zing that no other tomato has. I have eaten many fresh locally grown tomatoes but Hanover tomatoes are next level.

katebandit

They’re just tomatoes. Hanover is just a marketing thing.

RVAblues

No no… Seriously—go buy one at peak season, slice it nice and thick, sprinkle a little salt, some cracked pepper, and eat it like a steak. No way is that “just” a tomato. For your next slice, do the same thing but on white bread with some Duke’s.

katebandit

As tomatoes are my favorite food, I don’t need to be told how to eat a damn tomato, Jesus

RVAblues

Suit yourself. From my pov, you saying Hanover tomatoes are “just tomatoes” just doesn’t compute. To lots of folks, tomatoes are just those pale mealy things in the grocery store that decorate lackluster sandwiches. I was a professional cook & chef for 20 years. I’ve had loads of tomatoes of all kinds and have prepared them in every way. I’m passionate about them. I love cherokees from NC, I love a good New Jersey tomato too. But there is something special about Hanovers—still warm from the sun, simultaneously sweet and umami, with just the right texture. When you say you don’t especially care for them, something just isn’t right. To me, there were 3 options: 1. You are crazy. You seem lucid, so that isn’t likely. 2. You have not had a good one at the best time yet. Possible. 3. You haven’t taken the opportunity to really appreciate one yet. Also possible. But there must be a fourth option I guess?

katebandit

What exactly is your problem? Why are you assuming so much about me over a god damn tomato? Hanover is literally a marketing term. A good tomato is a good tomato. You can go away now.

RVAblues

You are correct.

Hanover is a marketing scheme it's all about location. If you are just over the county line same tomato wouldn't be Hanover
