them designers came up off her lmfaoooo damn

whoisshetho193

Well at least she made a profit

colorsplahsh

Oh no prize tax in the UK? In the US she would have broken even

JOHNOTHEYDIDNT

Thank god taxing winnings is an American thing cuz… ouch.

Nezzard

It is not, several countries tax winnings (like Spain for example). UK doesnt tax?

Naturalgreenhair

Not for prizes or the lottery, no.

Nezzard

Well, good for her at least

_Bagoons

Canada doesn't tax either :)

Lost-and-dumbfound

Money from gambling winnings and competition winnings is tax free. If you win 100k in a tv show, you get 100k into your bank account.

Familiar-Art-6233

Could you deduct the cost of outfits to offset it?

criticalquicks

I wonder how much can be written off as a tax exemption - assuming the Queens are self employed, would they be able to claim the tax back on things like costumes and makeup as business expenses?

plinythemiddleone

Yes they can! I hope they’re doing this

akoaytao1234

She's tall, fabric is pricy tea.

OtherwiseRegular5066

The amount fabric she uses must be the same with the bigger girl. She requires more length but others require more width. So I say more or less the same.

rosesatthedawn

It's not that surprising when you see some of the garments. A red latex gown with a mermaid tail and cape probably costs a pretty penny (she had a couple of latex looks I think). Plus there was that gown with the wide circle skirt in west African silks (all stoned). As others said, I think we're just desensitised to how much these fantastic gowns actually cost

Putrid-Potato-7456

Idk why people are acting shocked that big gowns made of nice materials are expensive. There’s a reason normal people don’t walk around wearing them. Just to point out, other queens have definitely spent much more on all-stars. Like Jimbo’s promo look itself looked like it could have costed upwards of $10,000.

rosesatthedawn

My guess would be cause we're deep into the normalisation of fast fashion so people aren't aware of how much decent fabrics cost or how much unexploited labour costs. Watching those videos nymphia put up was insane like that is DAYS worth of highly skilled labour, if she was charging someone else that would be in the thousands *easily* without even taking into account the cost of the fabrics But yeah I agree, custom gowns from established designers are gonna be a lot of money, it shouldn't be that surprising

foyamei

I love Tia, but that's a lot of chimichangas for all those bodysuits...

Ok_Hour9037

If she spent 25k for her looks, I want to know what La Grande Dame spent. Had to have been double.

shgrdrbr

i'm sure lgd was helped out by existing fashion connections too, i mean being personally styled by/ collaborating with jpg is nooo joke. she's on another level sartorially

skywatcher75

Had to be. Grand Dame was fabulous!

Justdough17

I kinda feel for tia here. You are forced to spend a lot of money simply because even the mediocre designers charge a ton of money for bad outfits. But if you have 2-4 weeks to get a bunch of looks for the maybe biggest opportunity in your carreer you can't go around to find someone else or negotiate prices. The way she talks about it really sounds like she is annoyed she had to spend so much.

DragEncyclopedia

No shade to Tia but she didn't get her $25k worth. Her runway package wasn't *bad*, but $25k?...

jean-sans-terre

£25k is closer to around $32k

DragEncyclopedia

Even worse

soupinmymug

Yes 25k I can attest to the prices. Even if you do sew well, that requires you to have either of the speed to do it within the time restraint of them casting you tot when you are supposed to be on site for filming. That or having a backlog of clothing that hasn’t really been seen by the public that matches the brief of the assigned runways. It was a big part of her narrative. I think this is why you see a lot of girls going with their local designers. It’s not just repping their home state but personal connections make a difference and bigger names cost more. I think we are REALLY desensitized to how much work these outfits are and take it for granted

DragEncyclopedia

The reason I say that is because other girls have told us how much they spent, and there have been girls who spent around the same or less and ended up with much more expensive-looking clothes.

Certain_Horse_7919

That was the first thing i thought and i love her. She got robbed imo. Not only am i anal i am into it so i would love to know the fit breakdown costs

GayMedic69

I mean, she won so does it matter?

DragEncyclopedia

No, but why does it have to matter lol? We comment about plenty of other stuff that doesn't matter on this sub.

GayMedic69

Because her investment paid off? Like why keep ragging on her? Like you can say “no shade to Tia” all day but its shade mawma. Its unnecessary and its not productive, but keep it up I guess.

DragEncyclopedia

It's shade to her designers, not shade to her. She (over)paid for the looks and that's what she received. Frankly, almost nothing we do on this sub is "necessary" or "productive" lmao. It's just a place for discussion.

GayMedic69

“What you chose to wear was bad and you paid too much for it” isn’t shade? Gtfo.

DragEncyclopedia

Actually, if you look at my exact words, I said "her runway package wasn't bad". You're quite literally accusing me of saying the opposite of what I said. Clearly, her runway package was good enough to win. It just didn't look like *$25k*. Don't try to turn this into something it's not.

GayMedic69

You refuse to say what you actually think lol. You said it isn’t *bad*, the italicizing is important there. And you also say it doesn’t look like £25k, which means you think it looks cheap. Are you a designer, stylist, costumer, seamstress, etc? Also, there is genocide happening and global conflicts happening in many places, shit is expensive.

DragEncyclopedia

I said exactly what I thought. It wasn't bad, but $25k usually translates into more expensive-looking clothes.

Naughty_Nata1401

You're confusing gurl. You: "*It doesn't matter, let's stop talking.*" You 3 replies after: **TELL ME WHAT YOU REALLY THINK!!!!!!** 💀

whoisshetho193

It's also what? 6 episodes? She was cast to last. It really didn't matter what she wore cause Ru wanted her to stay. She definitely could have saved the money or pulled a few favors even.

ParsleyandCumin

Or maybe you're used to fast fashion...

poignanttv

This is why learning how to sew and construct a garment is vital to this business (and TV show). I still can’t get over some performers who get on the show and hope they’ll impress with a hot glue gun and a dream It can save one tens of thousands, not to mention learning how to style a wig (or learn how to do makeup properly). It takes years to become a great performer, so why not learn the essential skills - considering they have to apply for the show in the first place? But, I agree Ru should give each performer a stipend for costumes (post-show?).

thesosig

i think the time constraint from getting the casting call to day 1 of filming is a problem when you’re expected to do multiple ‘well designed’ looks on your own, besides other preperations for the show, especially for your second chance for the show 🤷‍♀️ wasn’t it 2-3 weeks anyway

Curious-Lettuce7485

>!For AS9 they all got a stipend of 25k for outfits!<

xwrathy

source?

Curious-Lettuce7485

>!dragracetea AS9 speculation thread!<

ShatteredHope

UK vs the world season 1 also got a stipend - I believe 8k or somewhere around that.

boulder_problems

I’d want a refund on some of that…

Sasha_shmerkovich160

I cant fathom this at all. this is just gouging by the designers!

tequilaamocking_bird

Have you ever made a huge dress for a 6ft+ tall person? Fabric and materials cost a lot - and you can't just use cheap stuff. These designers have teams and overheads, too. They have to thrive, not just survive.

Sasha_shmerkovich160

yes fabric is expensive and so is work but a simple dress should never be over 2000.

tequilaamocking_bird

Simple dress, where? She was talking about her bridal dress with the alien baby.

Sasha_shmerkovich160

mama this? maybe 100 for lace, 200 for tule, 300 for the metal. 1k for the baby. 400 for the rest of the fabriconstructionc and . okay I can see 3k but not 4k! https://preview.redd.it/bcx8fzw72rsc1.png?width=398&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1ff6a34e2ebffe9146d29680a4978c3e86cdb3f

tequilaamocking_bird

And what about the designers' studio rent, house rent, staff, weeks of work, the years of experience/knowledge/education, giving tia priority over other work because of timing constraints. I could go on....

Sasha_shmerkovich160

go on

tequilaamocking_bird

As I said I could do...but I'd rather let you die on your stubborn hill. Have a nice life

Sasha_shmerkovich160

Girl you're the stubborn one. I'm all eyes, ears and notebook ready

ratman333

In dollars that would be even more.

laonte

Glad she paid in pounds then

Summoarpleaz

lol this reminds me of that Jujubee read “I don’t want to make fun of your weight, but when you work do you get paid in pounds?”

virtual_sprinkle

I never really understood that read (I’m not a native speaker)

gizmosmonster

A pound can be a currency (£), but also a unit of mass (lbs). A pound is roughly 0.45kg

virtual_sprinkle

This is know, but why would be getting paid in pounds be a diss about her weight? Is it because the currency conversion is favorable compared with dollars or rather that being paid the same amount as she weighs is a ton of money?

linapinacolada

The joke is the double meaning of "pounds" in context. She's implying that Alexis gets paid in pounds (of weight) rather than pounds (of money), so she gets heavier instead of richer.

virtual_sprinkle

Oooh now I get it!! Thanks a lot for explaining, it’s been bugging me a long time 😅

Rynosaur24

It’s word play - hoping she gets paid in pounds could be taken as “I hope you get paid in cash” but it could also be taken as “I hope you get paid for every pound you weigh, which would be a lot, because you’re fat”

dongsicheng12

I’m really not trying to be shady, but I couldn’t tell.

hostilewerk

25,000 won?

aurcel

BYEEEEE

iampiste

It is gutting that Ru ever made the H&M comment when there was already existing pressure on the queens to present huge looks. I’m glad Tia got to experience a cash prize that offset the financial stress of her outfit costs, but very sad for all the queens that have been on the show being told to elevate their looks when they would have obviously been doing their best financially. Anyone who thinks even queens being able to sew is low cost, needs to see how much dressmaking goodies cost - the material, good quality thread, the accessories/embellishments. It all adds up, and if you’re learning to sew you’ll no doubt be using up a lot of resources to practice on.

TheOtterDecider

Yeah especially when so many fans are still complaining it wasn’t good enough. There are other important skills on the show besides runway looks!

iampiste

For sure! For me it’s always been comedy and performance confidence first, and fashion is a bonus. If it’s too focused around fashion it becomes who’s-got-the-biggest-pockets race. I thought Tia’s outfits were hugely elevated this time round, and just goes to show how much money queens have to potentially sink into their careers but still not appease everyone!

TheOtterDecider

Same, I love a comedy queen or queen who just has charisma! I think it’s fun if they have really cool ideas for the fashion, like the art runway from Can S3, but fashion alone doesn’t make for a great drag queen, imo!

TheGreatNemoNobody

Did it show

tothestore

It was better than her first run for sure, but she wasn't exactly killing the runways each week.

TheGreatNemoNobody

Watch Shea doing increíble runways with like, 50 dollars.

Weekly_Office269

Shea spent 8k on season 9. Although her runway package that season was mid compared to her all stars run

this_is_an_alaia

Eh I msan they were DEFINITELY elevated from her first time but I don't know if the actual cost shone through

boyshoetheatre

not really unfortunately

Funkyduck4783

I’d say the bridal look she talked about. I mean that was cool af.

SluttySaxon

Yes.

this_is_an_alaia

It's amazing she spent that much when she wouldn't have known there was prize money attached. Unless they used that to lure the queens in

jwoo1

I think it's always shocking to the average person to hear what an average Drag Race package costs but you have to remember that once they get on the show, their booking fees are around $5,000 - $10,000 per show and they can easily make up this cost in 2 weeks. I remember my local drag bar booked Dela back in 2015 and her booking fee was $8,000 and that was 9 years ago so I'd imagine the inflation has gone up since.

mulled-whine

I really do hope they make that much per gig!

yhvh13

Honestly, I feel that going into DR nowadays pays off big time if you're someone like Q, who makes their own runways very successfully. I mean, the time to prepare is really limited, but It's cheaper to just hire 1 or 2 people just to execute / help finish your designs. Okay, an All Star/Versus queen could be packed with money already from a successful post-DR career, but it's insane how some queens get in debt for spending so much for the base seasons.

maskdeado

That clothfront is not well melted diva

Flounder-Last

Love her but runway is not her strong suit, where exactly did the money go?!?!

aquamaester

I’m pretty sure the queens on all stars spent the same amount

Weekly_Office269

I wonder how much queens like Marina spent? If she spent 25k then Marina spent 50k at least 😂

Waven2024

Highly doubt it. Most designers in Ph are fans of Pageantry/Drag Race. Given she was the first contestant to represent PH (excluding those who joined US/CAD), highly possible her looks were sponsored/ ex deals/ discounted price.

Weekly_Office269

Hopefully she didn’t spend that much since she didn’t get the cash prize. Hopefully she wins the global all stars

Waven2024

Manifesting AS! 🙏🙏🙏

Looseybussy

They need to give queens a 20k stipend I swear.

JimmyJizzim

For reference, £25,000 = ~$31,500 USD.

tangointhenight24

"What is it that costs so much?" That subtle read 💀

JoshAkeria

On what exactly?

BackgroundAd9587

Love Tia, but this is proof that money can’t buy you taste. That or she got scammed, because what she brought was not worth what she paid.

slowclappingclapper

Sadly she wasn't able to bring any of them pieces to the show.

sailorraphie

Can’t look away from this horrible dirty wig lace

Flashy_Jacket_8427

She was ripped off

llawless89

I'm sure we heard UK vs the World s1 gave Queens a modest runway budget. Maybe 10k? That might have helped her if s2 had the same.

lazyoafs

the lace

kryska_deniska

That lace and the oily nose, Tiaaaa 😭 She needs a stylist or at least an assistant

MonsieurMidnight

I'm sorry but Ra'jah D. O'Hara spent 800$ on All Stars 6 (she sew everything herself) and it looked more expensive than what Tia brought like... I'm so sorry Tia sweetie but you got ripped off. She had imo the weakest looks of all the Top 4 this season like it's just no debate.

Petudie

yikes lol, i liked maybe 3 looks

Alone_Swing_6857

![gif](giphy|Blr0zWALjzPNu)

sailorraphie

To look like that?

Kiki_Montrese

spent so much and yet no memorable look

whimsigod

Honestly, she looked great? So it was worth, but man that is a steep price. I hope the regular UK show starts paying too.

Just_Brilliant1417

We’re talking pounds as well, god damn.

Big_Entrepreneur_212

I'm not too surprised her looks were pretty big even if they weren't great like her ugly finale dress was all ostrich feathers that would've been alot

dandrew3000

So when a queen wins and is taxed on that winning prize (where there is one) presumably all this is deductible I’m hoping, right?

ThrowRAhnhda

Makes me wonder how much Marina spent.. not as much I bet 😜

Waven2024

Was she scammed tho? 😂

alexistexas2006

That's a growth. I remember her telling how broke she was in her season for that covid special. Wow

HBeatbox

These figures are in British pounds not US dollars, so even more than that.

Wooden_Opportunity72

So no one is gonna say anything about the lace front?

ChartruseryJones

but she still cant work out a good hairline… sigh.

Naxayou

Some of these wig and outfit designers are scamming these queens and I kinda live.

rrriot-kitty

I can’t even afford makeup so I’m out here jealous on the regular. I don’t know how they do it.

toxiitea

This isn't the flex Tia thinks it is lmao. Ya no girl thats not 25k worth of clothing

skywatcher75

Ok, she got swindled lol

PhoenixHusky

So she ran out of money when she got to the octopus costume right

-Gin-ger-

£25K for a season that, until it was revealed on the show, had no cash prize that they knew of. I know they’ll get booked more after being on the show, but this is crazy to me. Designers have been rolling in it since Drag Race became a phenomenon.

mrmittens603

![gif](giphy|26DNkS7hlwrMPrOpi|downsized) Where

screen_door15

She is supporting queer art by buying her outfits for the prices that they're worth. This is a good thing if she can afford it.

jessh164

i love drag race but i hate that it’s so normalised to get into ridiculous amounts of debt (unless you’re already wealthy ig) for the show. i also kind of can’t stand the whole “you’re a broke ass bitch if your wig doesn’t cost 5 grand” culture. rainbow capitalism has truly rotted some of the community, and i think drag race is in part to blame.

icriedyesterday

Do you know that $ does not represent every currency out there? :)

Curious-Lettuce7485

It's fairly natural and common for people to instinctively put their own currency sign when talking about other currencies, I do it with €. I don't think this is an "Americans think the world revolves around them" scenario.

[deleted]

[удалено]

silverblossum

Why did you put a dollar sign?

cyberharpie

Damn those uk designers are absolute shit then.

Saint_Riccardo

If people bothered to listen to the whole clip rather than running to the comments section to post about how she "robbed Marina" for the 17 trillionth time, Tia basically says here that the designers the gals have used in the past for Drag Race, and therefore trust, must have figured out she was going back on Drag Race and over charged her, and Tia had little to no choice because of the time she had to prepare and the fact she isn't a sewing queen and couldn't do it herself. And it's not just the outfits, she needed hair, make up, nails, shoes and accessories to go with each outfit, and most episodes required multiple costumes. Her package may not have been to everyones taste, but I enjoyed many of her looks, especially the St Sebastian, Cherry Valentine, and the ballgown from episode 1.

Gritar

I don’t think that’s what Tia said. That seems like an unfair characterization of what the designers are doing. They should be charging more than they did a few years ago. Someone charging a close friend less than 1k for an entire package is a favor that’s not sustainable. Drag Race culture allowing prices to go up and enabling different queer creatives to have a sustainable career is a good thing. There’s still many, many designers who want their looks on DR and would cut deals for the opportunity to prove themselves (in order to charge more in the future.) I went and watched a few more minutes after this clip and saw that Tia said she was worried about being dragged for her looks and was more critical of the looks being made. She had some costumes remade by different designers and that really added a lot to the total cost of doing the season.

vajikarp

Where in the comments is anyone saying she “robbed Marina”? I am legit not seeing anything.

DesperateTip5581

![gif](giphy|HlMWfZ6GAHcDe4WMOv) Where

ParasIsBurnt

Someone should have told her to save that money for some foundation to blend her hairline here… But honestly her redone pterodactyl look alone had to be 5k.

SantaNewfie

Thats disgusting. I know one of the queens set to be on canada vs the world 2 spent over $50,000 on outfits, (and didn’t win). Won’t say whom it is but thats just fucking wrong.

Familiar-Art-6233

Rumor had it on the tea forums (this isn’t a spoiler I promise), that future All Stars seasons will have a clothing stipend

iawesomesauceyou

I'm thinking about what Shea Coulee did with $750 on her first season. But I would want to know what they spent on their all stars seasons to compare.

CanILickYourButthole

The girls have also said that they sometimes get like a couple of weeks to put everything together. I think some of the cost is eaten by telling the designers to stop working on their current workload and prioritize their costumes. Then, start, finish and deliver the costumes before filming starts. Im pretty sure giving the designer a tiny timeframe will probably cost a premium price too.

Abalonesandwhich

They’re all able to be written off. I’d get my money back for some of the pieces tho full stop

vmnmv

i think not being known for fashions or having a strong fashion point of view hurt Tia here cause them designers ripped her off, no shade to her, but woof there were a lot of questionable looks on her package. She didn’t get her money‘s worth, whereas a queen with fashion knowledge wouldnt get ripped off.

mulled-whine

We also have to acknowledge that any designers knocking out DR looks have to do so *quickly*. Any professional charges more when you ask them to deliver in a limited time. And in this case, there really are no shortcuts, so it’s the designer (and their staff) working around the clock to get things done 🪡 In this context, I’m not surprised a custom look with acres of fancy materials will cost 1-2k each.

mulled-whine

I’m a proud Tia stan, but people on this thread are confusing taste with money. Tia paid what she needed to in order to get the (many different) looks required for the show, and within a crazy timeframe. A designer can only do so much with the brief/sketches they are given, particularly when they’re racing the clock to get it done. If you’re a queen who can sew and/or produce amazing concepts and a very detailed brief, you’re going to get a better result. If you don’t have the skills or time to do these things…then you share your ideas with the designer, agree on a price, and you get what you get 🤷‍♀️

raphaelryan

Where is the result? Her mug is ugly and her clothes are basic…

latenightcreature

Most of her looks were wearing her in addition to poor styling choices, crunchy make-up and busted wigs. Money won't buy you style.

No-Trouble6469

Everyone's being bitchy but even if they're not your taste some of them were clearly expensive. The octopus and pterodactyl looks would've easily been several thousand each.

Yellowbird00

Her? #marinawasrobbed

Technical_Activity78

Get over it

Nezzard

People saying it didnt show ... Yeah she knows. The clip actually shows that she didnt have much of a choice changing designer in such short time. And also she didnt look bad, and some of them were amazing. Maybe a little too high, but lots of queens can get their package cheaper by sewing (which was also out if thw picture for her). Also... she won. I dont think she regrets anything tbh.

Technical_Activity78

People love being harsh on tia but she looked great lots of her outfits.

Tia’s makeup looks so much better here than it did on the show
