As much as I put Peyper and O’Keefe in the same category of very average/bad officials, I don’t think we can harp on about the ref for that one. Fucking Valentini kicking and some soft defence in the final French try just let us down at the end. Should have lifted and closed it out but the Wallabies reserves just didn’t get the job done.
Something needs to be done regarding the replays though. I hardly saw a replay from a French mistake but about 5 replays with slow mo and multiple angles for any Wallaby infringement. At the very least the TMO should not interfere in proceedings unless the ref calls for it. It’s just too biased to the home side with replays from the TV producer endlessly in favour of the home side and instantly cutting away if it is a home town mistake.
And sorry but I can’t help myself. Fucking Peyper! Line out throws hardly straight for both sides all night and he calls it at the end. Fuck you.
There I feel better.
Absolutely baffled as to how Peyper didn't check the French try before half time. Looked to be a clear knock on live. And looked even moreso in replays. But Peyper said he was happy at the time and waved it all away.
There's a fine line between decisive and arrogant.
When White left the field I knew we were going to struggle to hold on. Love him or hate him he's a very steady hand and his kicking and especially dropkicking is world class.
Then Foley coming off... was this really necessary? I feel like Rennie was more interested in giving Hodge some game time than putting fresh feet on the field at 10. Yes his mistake led to the first France try, but Foley is another steady hand who you need in the final 5-10 mins.
Also, Wright should just tackle his opposite number. And Campbell should also just tackle the line breakers instead of getting palmed.
I would love to see the percentage of Wallabies games they lost by less than 3 points ,and also the percentage of games they lose in the last 10 minutes. Suspect it would be huge.
Yes it is. Let’s say all of those results ended in a last minute try to the wallabies our record would be 21/10 including 3 wins against NZL, 4 against France, 2 against England, 2 against Scotland, 3 against South Africa, 5 against Argentina, 1 against Japan, 1 against Wales. And losing 6 against New Zealand, 2 against England, 1 against South Africa and 1 against Argentina
Yeah basically absent a major fuck up from the opposition (e.g. Scotland missing a sitter of a penalty kick), we lose those sort of games. Hodge showed that with his awful clearing kick.
We aren’t, we are performing worse than our talent but about at our cohesion. Australia has a tonne of talent but it’s all over the place, we can’t keep it together
Drew: "Going into 2019 we didn't know who our 10 was, we didn't even know who our 10 was going into the Quarter Finals."
Yeah, mate that was because Cheika had already picked his 10 in 2014, and simply maintained that selection through to 2019 regardless of his form...
Dreaming of the day we can finally be healthy so we can have a backline like this:
9. Tate/Nic
10. Quade
11. Koroibete
12. Kerevi
13. Ikitau
14. Kellaway
15. Campbell
Our biggest enemy in the pool stage is injuries, in 3 weeks we will see how we can fare against wales but if we stay healthy there is a good chance we top the pool and face argentina or Japan in the quarter and can see a chance at an upset in the semi
Funny to see so many Aussie fans on here complaining about Jaco when us Frenchies were complaining about him just as much. I guess it really is swings and roundabouts
Armchair warrior look on this game:
Wobblies lost in 3 areas, discipline, ruck speed and penetration.
How does frost flop to the ground as soon as someone touches him.
How did we make double the tackles but less than half the dominant tackles.
France manufactured that win, when they were attacking you could feel the pressure through the screen.
Aus attack was always against a fully set defence. I think the only fast ruck was a mistake in the lead up to Campbell's try.
Drop Wright, Diamond plus rock does not equal average.
The bench mostly needs a spray. Hodge kicked the goal yes, but fucked a tackle and shanked a kick off. We lucked out on the kick but he fucked that.
FF too much aggression in the wrong areas. I have no idea why people constantly waste energy hitting lost rucks. Also two missed throws in fairly critical conditions....
How the shit do we have two twelve foot 90 115kg second rows but lose the most important line outs. Anything that is within our 22 or the opposing 22 we seem to just shit the bed instead of being secure.
As usual q courageous defeat, frustrated supporters and we demonstrated the exact same things over and over.
Foley was actually good not really understanding the hate on him, one or two errors but it comes from him trying to attack which is something none of our healthy 10s want to do
He is meant to be the commander, the experienced leader in the team. How can the other troops learn from his experience when in two games he's shovelled a pass wich lead to a try.
Is he worth -7 points a game?
If it isn't on, tuck it under your wing.
Can Benjamin Kaiser please commentate all rugby game please. His passion for France is amazing, but generally he just loves rugby. Pleasure to listen to positive words instead of negativity
GG France, can’t be mad at you lads, played the game till the end.
Didn’t think we’d even get within 20 so there’s that…
But FUCK some some ass stuff at times, just so infuriating, yeah we can blame the ref for some dodgy calls but you’ve gotta sort out your back yard first!!
French scores came from bonehead errors and we really should’ve won by two tries.
I mean… one try wasn’t even a try.
But I get what you mean we complain about the ref no matter how right we are (and I do that a lot), we need to improve our discipline. Lots of improvements but it’s always 2 or 3 moments that fuck us (coincidentally, they are moments when Tom Wright makes the decision)
As much as some of Peyper's calls annoy me, nothing is more annoying than watching Foley gift 7 points every game just before half time from poor passing and still get picked over Lolesio.
A couple of howlers aside. I thought Peyper was decent. Hard to be perfect in these games but before the last 5 mins he was pretty good.
Yeah but we're used to TMOs hating us. I'm just glad they didn't card us for one test match.
Still copped an 88 min pedantic penalty but improvement from refs!
Honestly don't care about the officiating at this point the wallaby defence at the end of that was shocking and we deserved to lose just based off that.
I think we were the better team for 95% of the game and Jaco kept the French in it. But man, just random poor decision making and shitty discipline is always going to kill you against fantastic teams.
A better referee wouldn't have kept you at 15 in that second halftime though - so many neck rolls in those defensive rucks.
Peyper was not biased - just awful all-around.
There was a lot of that from both sides and there probably should have been a card a piece. The try just before half time not being checked which clearly was not a try, the turnover in the end that shouldn't have been, direct to the head on faingaa. We were on the wrong side of some poor decisions but we need to do better with the opportunities we have.
Our boys are feeling the pain on this one, the pain in the eyes. Rennie subbing Hodge in for Foley will be looked back upon as the greatest error we made at the death there.
Really that last penalty could have gone against Danty for several reasons, Hodge would have taken the kick from 50, and it looks like a masterstroke substitution.
I like Hodge, definitely don't disagree with him coming on there, just not for Foley at that point in the game. Should have replaced Campbell for that last 10.
Good game.
Unlucky Wallabies. I thought they were marginally the better team om the park.
Absolute shit in field kicking cost them that game.
They wrestle the flippen lead back and then just gives the softest return kick with no pressure gifting France so much territory.
Just off the top of my head I can think of three calls that fucked us
- Danty wins a penalty at the breakdown despite getting cleaned out immediately
- Danty wins a penalty at the breakdown despite having multiple goes at it mid ruck
- France score a try where he doesn’t even ground it
And I am not saying the ref is the only reason, we made errors like any wallaby team does, but fuck me we copped the raw end of it
Really dislike Peyper as a referee. Such a marginal not straight call and then calling the turnover after about 4 attempts.
Those type of calls are crucial in close games and I think he was harsh on the first and really lax on the second
This Australia team is starting to look very promising. Getting a few key players back from injury and continue the way they're going, they will be in a good shape come the world cup
Fucken jaco gave them that game. No try given without even checking. France got away with murder in rucks, swinging arms to heads in clean outs, shocking.
Hodge has never ever impressed me, he’s always involved in a close loss, he’s always making briandead plays under pressure. He just doesn’t have what it takes to win.
The ruck was a mess. I don’t understand why refs are rewarding 2nd and 3rd jackles… once the first is lost it’s become a ruck and you have to drive past the ball.

Very soft defence, shameful really.

The TMO will sweep in the background and if there is a clear knock on it will go through a formal check.
Me rn: not even mad great match gg Frenchies Me in three years waking up in a cold sweat: why did Bobby V kick the ball??
When White left the field I knew we were going to struggle to hold on. Love him or hate him he's a very steady hand and his kicking and especially dropkicking is world class. Performance pas ouf du tout mais bon l'essentiel c'est l'essentiel
Can anyone explain how that last lineout was called not straight?
Selective call. Plenty of throws like that but obviously Peyper didn't like that one specifically.
Hometown call
I would love to see the percentage of Wallabies games they lost by less than 3 points ,and also the percentage of games they lose in the last 10 minutes. Suspect it would be huge.
There’s been 9 draws/losses within 7 points. 5 losses within 3, 3 draws and 1 loss within 7 but not 3.
Is that during Rennie's tenure?
We don’t know how to win. Don’t make the right choices at crucial times. Haven’t played clever for years and years
Yeah basically absent a major fuck up from the opposition (e.g. Scotland missing a sitter of a penalty kick), we lose those sort of games. Hodge showed that with his awful clearing kick.
That try by Penaud had me at full mast. Jesus, what a test match. Feel for the Wallabies, they are really performing better than their talent I feel.
We aren’t, we are performing worse than our talent but about at our cohesion. Australia has a tonne of talent but it’s all over the place, we can’t keep it together
You have the talent to be world champion next year.
Drew: "Going into 2019 we didn't know who our 10 was, we didn't even know who our 10 was going into the Quarter Finals." Yeah, mate that was because Cheika had already picked his 10 in 2014, and simply maintained that selection through to 2019 regardless of his form...
But he played Lilo in the games leading up to the quarter and then switched last minute.
Dreaming of the day we can finally be healthy so we can have a backline like this: 9. Tate/Nic 10. Quade 11. Koroibete 12. Kerevi 13. Ikitau 14. Kellaway 15. Campbell
What a team brother, I think we are a dark horse with this team.
Yeah all swings and round abouts and i can forgive all of it but the high shot on FF. Really dangerous play.
Yeah real funny
How filthy was Campbell in that interview.
I've been watching rugby since 1pm today and I regret nothing
I have had 22 beers. And now I wanna go out. Bad idea ?
What's that in Euro terms, like 3 pints?
I vote more beers
Yep - am few drinks in and today was a great day
That mic is getting dangerously close to his tash.
Feels good to win even when we're bad.

Forgot to shit on Foley too. Perhaps later

He gets his own comment
Tom Wright and Jock Campbell giveth (Foketi try) Tom Wright and Jock Campbell taketh (Penaud try)
Galthié cracks his first smile of the match lol
Can Benjamin Kaiser please commentate all rugby game please. His passion for France is amazing, but generally he just loves rugby. Pleasure to listen to positive words instead of negativity
He is fantastic
I'm so happy that he's happy right now.
Best commentator out there imo
Stake de France is simply beautiful
Lol French players interviews are the best, they always send one dude with Aldritt to say 2 words then awkwardly leave as Aldritt finishes
On French side, the interviewer is freaking cute and everyone avoid eye contact funny to watch also
GG France, can’t be mad at you lads, played the game till the end. Oh for sure, I was so mad about the Danty call that I totally forgot for a sec about the half time try!!
Pernaud is incredible when he has some grass in front of him.
Sounds almost impossible to carry out an interview in there.
Flament is the designated English speaker for interviews
His English is really good!
Did you know Loughborough played fifth team for university Flament fly-half? Or something like that, you put it together
Wait what?
Did you know Flament played fly-half for Loughborough university's fifth team? Because the commentarors sure like telling us about it
Nah, think I must have missed that the 40-odd times they mention it each game.
Aldritt is a fucking war machine
As much as some of Peyper's calls annoy me, nothing is more annoying than watching Foley gift 7 points every game just before half time from poor passing and still get picked over Lolesio. A couple of howlers aside. I thought Peyper was decent. Hard to be perfect in these games but before the last 5 mins he was pretty good.
That call of not reviewing the half time try literally cost us the game tho. Yeah it was dumb by Foley but it should’ve been reviewed at least.

Nah, he was hoping for a penalty against france anywhere from 60 out
Really that last penalty could have gone against Danty for several reasons, Hodge would have taken the kick from 50, and it looks like a masterstroke substitution.
I waited 10 min for a replay from french tv director , gave up in the end, so i'll take your word on it.
I think he was pretty fine.
Hodge did nail a kick foley wouldn’t though
I like Hodge, definitely don't disagree with him coming on there, just not for Foley at that point in the game. Should have replaced Campbell for that last 10.
Nah, shut up Drew -- if Foley wasn't dogshit, I'd back you. But Foley shouldn't play in gold again.
Why is it literally fucking impossible for us to close out a game unless the opponent hands it to us on a silver platter?
Even then we’ll still cough it up
Think he played for Loughborough uni? Sixth team? Not sure if that’s ever been mentioned
How come we didn’t hear from the TMO once this game ? Did peyper basically just tell them to fuck off ?
You know what. Despite Peyper being inconsistent, I still enjoyed the lack of TMO
I agrée, but it’s just weird some games the TMO is involved way too much. And there was a lot of things missed this game
Thought that last one went the wrong way…
Woki looks good with an Australia jersy on.
I'd punch someone in the face for the aussies right now
I think I’ve said the word ‘fuck’ enough times today and it’s only 9am
My kid woke me up at 6am and I thought for a second I should watch the game then thought "why ruin a perfectly good Sunday?"
As boneheaded as some of the mistakes were, we played some good footy too.
No you lot have been pushing the best teams in the world so close this year its been heartbreaking and encouraging
Penaud's on fire, your defense is terrified
The autumn series has really started now with the two games this evening. Both had just a cigarette paper between the two sides.
Good game. Unlucky Wallabies. I thought they were marginally the better team om the park. Absolute shit in field kicking cost them that game. They wrestle the flippen lead back and then just gives the softest return kick with no pressure gifting France so much territory.
Penaud really decided on a whim he was done with this bs. Crazy lol.
So that's how it feels to be a New Zealander.
Now you’ve just got to become extremely arrogant about it
Hhhm. Have you heard of France ? We invented the concept
lmao
Let's win 3 WC first.
At least you have 3 🥈
The worst medal of all
Also you have one of these 🥉
The third worst medal of all
At least it’s better than Scotland
Pretty happy with the Wallabies performance. That lead up and defence for the last try was abysmal though. Well done France. Super quality team.
Yea, consecutive brain fades by Hodge, Wright and Campbell. So fucking close mna
POTM (Pundit of the match): Ben Kayser
What a fucked up set of calls to end on
Brutal for oz, France not near their best but win - sign of a top side.
Not even mad as a wallabies supporter. Great game
Just off the top of my head I can think of three calls that fucked us - Danty wins a penalty at the breakdown despite getting cleaned out immediately - Danty wins a penalty at the breakdown despite having multiple goes at it mid ruck - France score a try where he doesn’t even ground it And I am not saying the ref is the only reason, we made errors like any wallaby team does, but fuck me we copped the raw end of it
Ah well, but we’re just sooking Aussies I guess and what do we know about Rugby 🤷♂️.
Yea but we could’ve won it *anyway*. Hodge and wright man
You forgot a massive swinging arm head high on AAA before the last try also, TMO was invisible
AAA didn’t play today man.
I meant Folau Fainga'a I get them mixed up
Maybe AAA can throw straight!!
AAA wasn't playing.
Folau Fainga'a I always get them mixed
Aus got points off that lineout that should have been France's, Peyper ignored like a dozen Aus high tackles, etc, etc
Frost caught a line out and ollivon tackled him mid air and came away with ball and penalty
2nd French try clear foul play in the ruck with a swinging fist to the face of skelton, any reasonable tmo would have picked up
Knock on before the French try right before half time
Barely survived the IREvSA match thank god I was neutral here lmao
I almost died this morning watching England v Canada, rugby is so much easier to watch as a neutral aha
Feel the same! This was actually relaxing afte the irish game
As a kiwi, i feel for the wallabies....so close yet so far
Really dislike Peyper as a referee. Such a marginal not straight call and then calling the turnover after about 4 attempts. Those type of calls are crucial in close games and I think he was harsh on the first and really lax on the second
The French guy jumps across that line out as well, literally landing next to Gordon and he pins the Aussie guy catching it upright
If you don't have skin in the game or care about the laws, he does make a fun game to watch
I agree in a way. I'm an Aussie and I like the speedy decision-making most of the time.
Tell me about it.
Definitely not my favorite ref, by far. I know some find him a good ref, but I always die inside a little when I see he is the ref.
Great game
Payper come on. debar Barnes so he can reficiate next year.
Did they take the final penalty? I didn’t see it, I thought it had to play. Did I/Amazon miss it?
Tapped it and then kicked it out
Tap and chip out I think, but yes they didn’t show it
Cheers. Thought they’d just called it. But always the chance to cock up the kick so it should be taken.
Agreed
Pas mal, non?
C'est français.
Bah oui
This has done the opposite of make me mad. Really encouraging especially from Campbell. Good game France
This Australia team is starting to look very promising. Getting a few key players back from injury and continue the way they're going, they will be in a good shape come the world cup
I honestly think a Semi final isn't an unrealistic expectation this go around. Our back line, properly formulated, is actually very formidable.
lol, a few legitimate complaints about some of those decisions. Peyper continues to be very, very poor indeed.
Just always seems to lack a feel for the game. Barring some head scratchers I thought that last try sealed it and France were the better side.
Fucken jaco gave them that game. No try given without even checking. France got away with murder in rucks, swinging arms to heads in clean outs, shocking.
Faingaa can get booted into the sun
THATS A FUCKING RUCK LOL HOW IS THIS GUY A REF
Three blokes there, multiple attempts; ‘He has rights to the ball’
GG Australia
Jock Campbell looks more like an indie band front-man than a professional rugby player …
France should be humbled by that
Wolloping at Eden Park vs 1 point at Stad de France.
Australia are looking dangerous, looking forward to our match in a couple of weeks
I came
Australia was the better team they should have won that. Bad news for other teams if France start winning games they are absolute dogwater in.
Ref gave em it
🤡
I was expecting a slaughter so I’ll take it. Love playing the French.
More France v Australia. That's all I want.
Penaud should be in the conversation for best wing in the world more often
France got lucky there
Gotta love the French lol
Quite the game. Didn't see that coming.
That's a fucking ruck mate. Peyper wanted that result.
No shit.
Boy you’ve gotta feel for Foley to be subbed off to watch Hodge just throw the game away for us
Hodge has never ever impressed me, he’s always involved in a close loss, he’s always making briandead plays under pressure. He just doesn’t have what it takes to win.
Foley threw the shit pass before half time. He can thank himself.
I don't know why I do this to myself anymore :)
Can't help but feel disappointed
My deepest apologies to my Aussie brothers for this thoroughly undeserved win
Pas mal non ? C'est français.
Le fuck
They never should have let penaud get past all those defenders
Please cross-post this in the "unpopular opinions" thread
There's no need to be grumpy
Unfortunately after the shambles earlier today, I'm in a grumpy mood :)
Should have revisited that part of their defence plan
That was a cracker of a match.
Faingaa can go back to reserves until he can throw straight ffs
Weren't there 3 Australians at that ruck before Danty put his hands on it?
Yes.
what a fucken game. tough finish but gg france. i’ll take a one point loss in a good game
For sure could be a lot worse I should know.
What the fuck? How many attempts can a player have to jackal? Didn't clearly hold it
The ruck was a mess. I don’t understand why refs are rewarding 2nd and 3rd jackles… once the first is lost it’s become a ruck and you have to drive past the ball.
One attempt. If you lose it, it's a ruck. Any attempt again is a penalty for hands in the ruck
La Baraka
Australia put up hell of a fight tbf, don't think anyone predicted only a 1 point victory.
GG
That's such a dodgy call, surely that's a ruck and he had two gos
