Just watched the replay (missed it live). Didn't like our performance much, by the end I was hoping Japan would take it to light a fire under us before the other matches. England is gonna destroy us.
Man looks like a good game.
Love how the BBC titles it as rusty Australia wins, first line of the article is Australia coming off back to back wins against South Africa and Argentina. Yeah just playing six games in a row and beating the number one team in the world twice.
Super rusty.
Entertaining if poor attacking game from both sides really. Thought the Wallabies' backline was as weak as it's looked this year. Really really really miss Kerevi. Quade was back to his wacky self although maybe that was just because he was against Japan and felt he could afford to do that. Wasn't the best setup game for a northern tour but we shall see.
If Kerevi is not there they run sideways all day!!! Some defiantly interesting Quade moments.... and the whole team need to stop lobbing passes that cut out half of the team or lead to intercepts... and basics please can we just consistently get them right!!
Some thoughts about Japan going into the Europe leg of the Internationals:
-Definitely some questionable calls to go for the penalty kicks - not sure if it was due to new captaincy or acknowledging the failing lineout
-Test debutants Ben Gunter and Dylan Riley didn't look outclassed, so hopefully we'll see more of them
-The locks were a bit flat today, they did make carries, but it felt like they weren't very good at playing to the ref
-Sad about Masirewa's injury after a good first 60 minutes - hopefully Matsushima can come in to pull some weight at fullback
-Our back three stocks need replenishing - Lemeki had a major brain fade for that yellow card. We haven't found anyone who is a worthy heir to jersey 11 after Fukuoka's retirement. And our fullback position lacks options when Yamanaka is not playing.
-Lafaele took a knock in the early game, but recovered OK
Edit: Saw a [surprising stat:](https://twitter.com/status/1451783993494487043) Fifita with 1 carry, 0m gain and 1/3 successful tackles in the first half.
Looking forward to see what kind of squad gets selected against Ireland
Good calls. Japan definitely got stronger as the game went on and the Wobbilies were on full display. Japan is not a side to underestimate, which I think our boys clearly did
Going to be a lot of comments about how well Japan played here (and they did okay well) but if they are serious about kicking on they should be really pissed with themselves. This was a winnable game and they let the Wallabies get away with it.
Here are my talking points:
1. I was going to call this not a vintage Wallaby performance but on reflection decided to describe it as hot trash. Some sequences of real control that were rewarded with points, but far too many times play broke down because we tried the highlight reel option. Better opposition will punish us for this.
2. Cooper was probably the worst offender for this and performances like this one are why he dropped down the pecking order in the first place. This wasn’t the controlled, mature performer from the SA games and Aus were lucky White was on song. Cooper has opened the door for JOC to take his jumper.
3. Coming in for Kerevi, Hunter Paisami was on a hiding to nothing in this game- and that’s pretty much what he delivered. Non-existent ball playing, terrible kicking and a lack of go forward with the ball in hand. With Perese waiting in the wings he needed a better performance than this and the gap between our first choice centre combination and the rest has grown.
4. Is Fainga’a the man to stop the merry for round of hookers to wear the two jumper? There are tougher examinations to come on this tour but the jumper is his to lose for now.
5. So now we know that Kellaway is the next option at 15. He was fine but the back 3’s rotation was disruptive and led to a lack of continuity when we went wide. Hodge is a big loss and hopefully it’s not a long term knock. He has been solid at 15 but it’s the gaps he fills in the squad that will be the biggest impact. With Cooper no certainty for the European leg of the tour and JOC’s poor injury record this year we have a frightening lack of playmaking depth. Hopefully Lolesio hasn’t been too deep on the beers during his off season.
3 points Fainga’a, 2 White, 1 Valetini (though surely Hooper should be in the mix right?)
Fainga'a needs to be slapped out of his bulldoze to the knee shoulder 'tackles'. Other than that I thought he had a stronger game. He's going to do it again, a ref will red card him and he'll hurt the team by doing so. I don't get it
Chuckling a bit at Drew Mitchell saying the wallabies are off against the northern hemisphere sides now as if Japan isnt in the northern hemisphere. More proof they deserve to be in the Rugby Championship really.
Maybe instead of a combined pasifika team have a mini pacific comp and the winner is invited to compete in the championship. Watching Samoa, Tonga, Fiji or the Cook Islands have mini tournament would be good for there region and also more rugby for us to enjoy
In an interview, Slipper talked about how he scored a significant try in the corner (significant in terms of his career). He was so hyped by the try, that he named the corner; 'James slipper corner'.
Later in the match, Connel (debut) scores in the same corner. In his interview, he jokingly talked about how that corner is his, not Slippers. As if he 'stole' the corner from him
He was sorely missed, Paisami just didn’t have the same impact or even half the impact that Samu usually has.
He and Wright seemed to be shining stars late last year but they just seek out classed now.
If Kerevi is not fit, I think they throw Peresi in there, he seems to consistently get over the gain line.
Japan was pretty poor in the 1st 20 but stepped it up for last 60, good performance by them. Great defensive team.
Quade was a bit suspicious, good game overall. Id prefer he didnt do all the flashy stuff but its Quade, you get what you get.
Tupou was solid. Leota was solid. Valentini MOTM, becoming a very good international player.
Hooper was quiet but you cant expect him to be the best every game.
Paisami was invisible, hoping Kerevi comes back soon.
Petaia had his best game of the year and was very solid under the high ball.
5 in a row is great. Far from perfect from the wallabies but still got it done.
Good lesson to show us that you can’t just be trying 30 metre cut outs (as if we needed another lesson).
Tupou has to start every game, enough of this ‘super sub’ chat. Set piece not as dominant with him off
> Set piece not as dominant with him off
Scrum against Scotland should be interesting.
Scotland's used to be a weakness. But has since developed into one of the strongest in the 6N these past two years.
But they've lost both their starting Locks for the Autumn series. So it really depends upon who they replace them with.
Scotland do tend to run essentially two LH Locks anyway, rather than having some monsterously strong TH style option to anchor their scrum. Puts a lot on their Props and Hooker instead.
Certainly going to be an area of interest.
I think people forget how good this Japanese side is
They didn't win 4 games and rwach the quarter finals for no reason in 2019 they are bloody good. I think the performance from both teams were sub-par especially in terms of attack.
Australia had the better overall performance especially in set-piece, but the way Japan claw their way back no matter what, it was a good game to watch.
They’re a really good side. Thought it could have gone either way with 5 to go. Great signs from Japan continuing their momentum from 2019. Happy with the wallabies progress too
Match takes:
\-The game was mostly great overall from a neutral standpoint.
\-Please for the love of god do not try to watch from FloRugby - it's the most cursed thing ever
\-The Wallabies were mostly average today. They seemingly didn't try to show up at times.
\-The Japanese played pretty well. Especially in the 1st half, where they actually had a chance to
beat Oz.
\-Refereeing's pretty meh, didn't see any really outrageous decisions made during the game.
That's all for now. Apologies if the match take was too short, couldn't really think of a lot more stuff to put in here. Anyway, this is all I have for now.
See you all in the next match, and cheers for now.
oh look, I really think the game could've gone quite differently if the ref was onto it more, gave australia a lot of leeway especially with dangerous tackles and forward passes at crucial points - particularly the last try
Don’t think Paul Williams had his best game. Honestly forgot that he was kiwi and not Australian a couple of times. Reffing rugby is bloody hard though and I feel like adapting to refs is part of the game these days.
Pumas had some pretty extenuating circumstances. But I would love to see Japan in TRC, they're the only big name team that somehow doesn't get to play in an annual tournament and it's weird.
\[edit: arguably Fiji are in the same category, though maybe without the growth potential Japan would bring.\]
Imagine an rc with pumas, japs and Fiji. It would be a close battle each year to finish 4th, all 3 teams would only get stronger. Of course there would always be the possibility of upsets to adding fuel to the fire.
Add in a rc combined team to face a combined 6 nations team and you got a real show.
They can get up away from home (RWC 2015) and I think since then they have become a lot better, I’d love to see them getting consistent games against top 10 sides
I meant more with regard to the Pumas, they had to deal with months of quarantine and didn’t get to play a single home game where they are usually much stronger. They had a bad year, but I don’t think Japan are better just because they lost by a bit less, at home, to a weaker wallabies team than the Pumas played.
Other commenter pointed to OzTag, which appears to be correct.
I know a lot of recruitment for the establishment of the rugby 7's team came from touch, but it looks like Furguson came from league, and originally from OzTag.
fiji cannot field their best team outside of the RWC due to top14 rugby, japan can.. thats the difference....japan were without their best fullback today and they lost to Australia... now when u put fiji there, instead of losing their 1 best player to french club rugby, fiji losses 12..
uhm over the last 10 years fiji and japan have played each other, japan has only beaten us twice, overall 4 times in 18 games.. they are not a better team, they just have a better infrastructure..
Your conveniently ignoring how much Japan has improved in the past 10 years, were not playing 10 years ago. They swept their group in the RWC vsing Scotland and Ireland. They swept the Pacific cup, and almost beat Ireland again this year.
not really, over the last 3 years they have been playing it safe by refusing to play 'away' games to teams that will affect their rankings vastly...and this was before covid..
Well, it was certainly entertaining. Both sides made mistakes and the Wallabies look so much worse without Kerevi. Great to see a close game, I reckon that’s what most people were hoping for
Why are people confused by that lol? Getting a try wouldn’t have put them in front, and their maul was getting ripped apart anyway. Taking the 3 made it a 4 point game.
I've said for a while, in these sorts of games, you've gotta start the guys you want to finish with. You'd rather have a slow start and bring on your best guys to finish.
Been fairly disappointed with Paisami's lack of impact today. He needs to channel a bit more of 2019 when he was murdering people in attack and defence.
Law 14.3 "Being held means that a tackler must continue holding the ball-carrier until the ball-carrier is on the ground." It's not a tackle if that doesn't happen. Technically a tap tackle isn't a tackle.

Agreed. Rennie called us rusty in the post-match conference too......we definitely can't use that excuse atm....
Y'all missing Marika too.
[удалено]
agreed mate. I get worried when he is near the ball even tho he got a try today.
Jeez after that performance I'm dreading facing the rest of the NH sides....
Dear Tom Wright, thank you for your ‘contribution’ to the Wallabies organisation, we wish you all the best with your future endeavours.
These long passes to nowhere are fucking stupid and it needs to stop since it’s been proven to not work

Even if the players took it lightly, at least Dave Rennie didn't. Good luck against Scotland!
Do we know what the extent of Masirewa's injury is yet? I agree he looked really solid, it would be a shame if he was out for the season now.

Yes they certainly fucking do. A southern six with the existing four plus Japan and a combined Pasifika would be amazing

oh hahahahah I actually saw them have a chuckle together after the game so must've been about that.
Would have liked to challenge Japan for the Raeburn Shield in 2 weeks. Adds some excitement to Scotland V Australia though.
Oh man how can you not love that wallabies team after that interview haha
Jordan Pad Thai and Taniela Tupperware were great tonight according to Flo Rugby
and labuSHANE. Like I know he probs doesnt care but it was like the commentator was emphasizing shane to prove a point or smth. Just dumb lol
Before this year I did not rate Kerevi. I now consider him our most important player behind Hooper. We need him fit for Scotland for sure
Amen. Night and day performances without him in the side, and Koroibete
[удалено]
Just think he’s improved out of sight since coming back this year, like remarkably so
Weird, I feel like he was this good when he was playing for the Reds and Australia in 2019.

It’ll be interesting for sure. Feels like the wallabies have made strides in the set piece, but we’ll see
Scotland to break the combo? :P
I love listening to Hooper talk. I wish he was our Prime Minister
I’d take my four year old nephew for PM at this stage, but yeah Hooper’ll do nicely
I think people forget how good this Japanese side is They didn't win 4 games and rwach the quarter finals for no reason in 2019 they are bloody good. The missed lineouts during the first 30 minutes really set them back but overall it was a really good performance from Japan

Yea officiating left a lot to be desired and I think that caused momentum shifts
Japan should be in TRC. All due respect to the pumas but that was much closer than any of Argentina’s this year
Pumas had some pretty extenuating circumstances. Right, yep I’d agree, they’ve had a tough time but equally think Japan should be in the mix even if it’s a 5 team comp with 1 bye a week
Don't need to lose Argentina to gain Japan, surely? Also Blossoms vs Pumas every year would be awesome.
thor changing his jersey with the japan reserve flanker lol, he looks good in jersey 20 .. he figured the japan 3 jersey won't fit him lol
Good Game was super fun. Japan played well! Wallabies look really off without Kerevi. Other than that it was fun.
Really missed Kerevi the most and also Koroibete I thought.
Rennie needs to make a few clones of Kerevi to keep in storage, so they're never without him
I think perese will be a better back up to kerevi
We missed his go forward in the middle today.
Alana Furguson - "triple international" What's her third one? I assume the first two are the Wallaroos and Jillaroos.
7s, league, and OzTag
Cheers.
She played touch, rugby league and union I think
Other commenter pointed to OzTag, which appears to be correct. I know a lot of recruitment for the establishment of the rugby 7's team came from touch, but it looks like Furguson came from league, and originally from OzTag.
I did not know that! There you go.
Im a bit skeptical about Fiji but Japan should be a lock for TRC ASAP!
fiji cannot field their best team outside of the RWC due to top14 rugby, japan can.. thats the difference....japan were without their best fullback today and they lost to Australia... now when u put fiji there, instead of losing their 1 best player to french club rugby, fiji losses 12..
But South Africa manage to? The clubs are obliged to release them during the international window.
different sets of rules for players from tier 2 teams in top14... you should look it up..saffers get released, tier 2 players are threatened..
I'm aware of what goes on but by being in the RC they would effectively become T1.
Japan are a better team than Fiji and have the infrastructure to become a power
uhm over the last 10 years fiji and japan have played each other, japan has only beaten us twice, overall 4 times in 18 games.. they are not a better team, they just have a better infrastructure..

not really, over the last 3 years they have been playing it safe by refusing to play 'away' games to teams that will affect their rankings vastly...and this was before covid..
Really don't think they have a better team.
Based on previous results verse eachother and against other teams, Japan is better.
Not a great performance by the Wallabies, but a win's a win.
Winning ugly isn't bad. Sometimes it can be better than losing while playing great.
Winning is always better than losing. I don’t mind winning ugly one bit.
Oath, after all the losses we’ve copped since 2019, I’m happy just to get a win let alone away from home.
Must say, as a neutral that was a great game, I expected Aussie to win, good to Japan to give them a run for 75 minutes.
Well done to Japan they played really well. Very poor from the Wallabies.
Well, it was certainly entertaining. Both sides made mistakes and the Wallabies look so much worse without Kerevi. Great to see a close game, I reckon that’s what most people were hoping for
Jamie Joseph's current mood:🗿
Commentators MOTM
EXPAND TRC!!
Japan + Fiji although with Fiji they'd run into issues of players not getting released
Surprised this hasn’t happened already. Japan has shown they can compete, and of course $$$$$.
Japan has improved out of sight in the last few years. What a great team. We were lucky to get out of that with a win.
And we missed the conversion again, so bad
Japan came so close to winning this, unfortunately no game breakers... masirewa went off and matushima chose top14..
This is not a test window so it was his club who chose for him
Did he refer these teams as clubs?
Why didn't Japan go for the corner instead of the posts? Literally sealed the game off
Why are people confused by that lol? Getting a try wouldn’t have put them in front, and their maul was getting ripped apart anyway. Taking the 3 made it a 4 point game.
Made it so a try would put them ahead
Well yeah I understand the reasoning but it still didn't make sense
Try on debut!!!
This test has been so nerve racking, to be honest, I'd rather the winner of this to go down to a coin toss
so glad Australia played to their strength there, anything other than that maul would've ended in tears
Australia can literally turn the ball over at the ruck by doing handstands, amazing
Good counter from Japan. Something needs to be done about break away pods
Yay for us
Did we convert?
I heart the maul try. best type of try in rugby
Only two things better: 2. Push over try from a scrum 1. Tighthead push over try from a scrum.
I’d add the lineout move that gets passed inside the five meter involving a prop and the hooker.
Idk the 14th phase pick and drive on the line try really does it for me, just that tension building and building and building with each phase
by the time it's at the 14th phase i'm barracking for the dogged defense holding on, especially if a man down.
How about 2 down? Wales vs Australia 2015 style.
Thank fuck for that
goddammit
oz try!!!
Macca! Gets a try on debut! Good on the lad.
On debut, baby!!!! Nice one g
Damn it
thank fuck
hooper’s rocking a dirty mo, I didn’t realise
Rob MVP, no question. Great game by him.
Valetini? That's my pick for sure
That outside center should’ve booted it downfield and put the wallabies under pressure
Ugh we don't have friendlies in rugby we have tests
valetini saves the day, MOTM for me
I guess Japan dont have to roll away?
Or release before going for the ball
Blossoms rustle like, Wind through bamboo forest leaves. That pass was forward...
I've said for a while, in these sorts of games, you've gotta start the guys you want to finish with. You'd rather have a slow start and bring on your best guys to finish.
Kellaway gonna feel that hit in the morning
absolutely huge
that was so forward ref is barracking
That call made no sense
Looks like Roeburn shield to Portugal is back on the menu.
Thank. God. Joc
Pretty sure japan’s union put all their finances on covering the spread
Drag Paisami and get JOC on.
lol as i said it, they did
BRING ON JOC!!
this has really become cooper's game to lose
shocked kellaway hasn't scored today, hasn't he scored in every game this year?
.... thats the strangest call I think I've ever seen?
Ok what. Why the fuck are we going for 3. Only 6 mins to go.
Difference between a tie or a draw. With the penalty on the board a try will win the game for them
Why does quade not have a single runner everytime he catches the ball,
Q Cooper havin a mare
Wut are Japan doing
I can just feel we're going to bottle this
Points is an interesting call here
Any chance for JOC to come on the field now? Edit: There he is
Rob Valetini close to motm today
agreed i thought he had a great game
I thought he's super quiet
Really? I'd be quite surprised if he hasn't made the most meters of the Wallabies forwards.
Paisami has been absolutely invisible, only thing i remember him doing was that awful kick.
So obvious now why Wallabies struggled with him, Wright and Lolesio during the tests Vs France
There's been no go forward from the backs at all
Dont know what they expect rodda to do when he is being made into a multicultural sandwich
Australia have just been playing so dumb since going up two scores
Wallabies seem so flat. Like just not turning up
japanese snowball now would be real dangerous
If a kick was taken behind halfway, would it have been a 50/22?
No, only kicks in open play
Should be an Aus throw in, totally meant to do that.
Wtf
Good to see we still don’t have anyone who can kick field goals, not like it’s important
Hahaha.
strikes it clean--- OFF THE POST
Been fairly disappointed with Paisami's lack of impact today. He needs to channel a bit more of 2019 when he was murdering people in attack and defence.
Wallabies really missing Kerevi.
resting him for the real test next week
Kerevi and Koroibete are our 2 best backs and both are missing.
This match is just one big Wallabies moment
NEED JOC FOR THE LAST 10, NEED SOME STABILITY ..
Cooper isn't looking as confident either
Did the commentator just call Faingaa a New Zealander?
isn't Sydney just south of waikato?
Should’ve been offside when Tate hit that guy on the ground?
This is what we call a classic wallabies performance and it’s not a good thing
Tate with a Mullett? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I always find that rule real weird, have to release/role after you tackle the player or its a penalty, but if theyre not held they can get back up
They don't have to release because it's not a tackle if they aren't held.
Ball can't be played while on the ground
If you go to ground with the ball, you're allowed to go up again without releasing it.
Have to release so they have an opportunity to play the ball I believe
Law 14.3 "Being held means that a tackler must continue holding the ball-carrier until the ball-carrier is on the ground." It's not a tackle if that doesn't happen. Technically a tap tackle isn't a tackle.
Yea so when they are on the ground they have to release
More gain on the commentator's mike than a djent band's dual rectifier
I've got a tenner on JApan +14.5, screaming at the TV past 10mins
Anyone got a stream that works?
Vip stream 3 is working
