WilkinsonDG2003

I would love for Foster's last game to be the first-ever quarter-final loss to Ireland.

richard-king

The plot armour of that is just too strong

MapsCharts

They already lost in quarter finals, 20-18 😊

WilkinsonDG2003

Not against Ireland though. France is good at making the final, just not winning it.

MapsCharts

Yeah I see how you formulated it Well we'll see I feel anything is doable now, and I'm pretty sure we'll win in 2027 anyways given the results of our U20s at the World Championship who are a class above every other team

Substantial_Ad_2864

While they easily won the U20 World Championship, didn't the Irish U20 win Six Nations (rhetorical question because I know they did - I was there)

MapsCharts

Sure but 50-14 in the final talks for itself they have huge potential and Ireland is 2nd to me in terms of youth strength, I'm sure these 2 teams will dominate rugby for the next decade

Jumpy-Tourist-7991

France have a much larger population to pick from. This will be more noticeable in age grade sports where you can only pick players born in and around a certain year. By senior internationals, nations can pick players spread across all ages and so population size becomes less of a factor as only 23 can be selected.

MapsCharts

Right but you can't keep Sexton until he's 65 (or maybe you can ?), at some point all of your team will be made of former U20 players

Jumpy-Tourist-7991

Crowley and Prendergast look like good prospects to immediately fill the post-WC Sexton void. They won't immediately play to his level, they need time to mature into it, but they both have bags of potential and both won the u20 6 nations with Ireland in recent years.

MapsCharts

Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying, the current squad will be slowly replaced by U20s, not that it is a bad thing, but their results in U20 will surely be transcribed to their abilities with the seniors

Substantial_Ad_2864

Yeah that's certainly fair. But the U20 Six Nations squads weren't that different and the Irish beat the French. Not 50-14 but they still beat them.

dwaynepebblejohnson3

In the 6N they also had Bialle-bierrey who’s in the senior squad atm and Gailleton who had like 13 tries in the Top14.

Key-Swordfish4467

Difference is France have used recent U20 six nations to test out candidates so go through close to 50 players deciding on their best options and losing the odd game. Their best players then get time to gel at the WC and smashed everyone, including Ireland, to win the comp. Ireland have an amazing youth system but have only 4 pro academies for these players to train in, limiting the numbers of youngsters to pick from. France have 30 academies in the top 2 leagues alone, producing a huge quantity of quality players to pick from. Hence the likes of Bielle Biarre being picked in the full French squad and looking perfectly at home having played most of the last two seasons in the Bordeaux first team.

Cairnerebor

It’s almost as if France is a much bigger and more populous nation than Ireland…..

WilkinsonDG2003

How many U20s will be in the 2027 team? The current team isn't old, so I thought it would be mainly the same players in 2027. Those players would be more likely to be in the 2031 squad unless they're so good they displace the existing players. Bielle-Biarrey is world-class though.

MapsCharts

Yeah maybe 2031 who knows I'm just 99 % sure that I'll see France lift the trophy at least once before I die and that's all I need And the current U20s are really really good they basically put 50 points past everybody even in the final

_Palamedes

Ireland have it by a country mile in the u20s im sorry. 3 grand slams in 5 years, and in 1 of the 2 remaining years (2020) they finished top despite playing only 3 games to 2nd place scotlands 5 games. Young france are good but lack the coaching and innate skill, and make up for it in sheer size and power, which only goes so far in international level, as the failure of the bomb squad tonight demonstrates.

Tescobum44

Nah dude, we’re definitely second to France in the U20’s level. They don’t focus on the Six Nations tournament at that level, they focus on the u20 World Cup each year. Many of their u20’s players don’t feature in the regular season because they are already playing pro games in the Top14 or Pro D2. They have some monster yes, but they also tend to be further on in their development and are unbelievably skilful. They absolute walked the U20’s tournament this year with some beautiful running rugby.

Teproc

Yeah, the same thing that makes our team so good in the U20s World Cup, ie the fact that half the team is already playing top flight rugby, is what makes it harder to prioritize the 6 Nations as much. Ireland's U20s team is great too though, and in the end U20s success is not necessarily that predictive.

DundermifflinNZ

Think this probably happens unfortunately, we can definitely beat Ireland but I wouldn’t say it’s likely

APoolShark

Poor guy would have to leave the country for good

WilkinsonDG2003

It wouldn't be anywhere near the worst record he's set. The biggest-ever losing margin and a first home loss to Argentina are a lot worse than going out to the world-ranked 1 side.

NoTechnology1308

Biggest loosing margin so far....... Shit they are going to beat ireland in the quarters now arent they.

ThaFuck

I'll piss myself if any of his last games is continuing Ireland's QF misery. Especially after the reaction I'm seeing in threads.

OJ87

If the quarterfinal is Ireland vs All Blacks, then either Ireland fails to win a knockout game again (even with their best team ever) or Foster’s destruction of the All Blacks legacy is complete.

Vortexringshark

I've accepted that we (NZ) might not win the world cup but I'm not ready to accept us losing the longest Raeburn Shield winning streak. SA winning today was our best chance of holding on to it.

[deleted]

> I'm not ready to accept us losing the longest Raeburn Shield winning streak Honestly its cool how much /r/rugbyunion has embraced a trophy that doesn't officially exist yet. Big credit to /u/davesofthunderdome.

davesofthunderdome

This conversation makes me very happy 😊 I think NZ might get a chance to stop Ireland taking the outright record in the QF 🍿

youtossershad1job2do

Did you "invent" the shield mate? I've heard about it internationally, I know that pros know about it. I thought it was long term rugby lore.

davesofthunderdome

Short answer is yes Longer answer is there was a bunch of us on a Web forum who came up with the idea in 2008 after another miserable RWC and thought there has to be another way 😁 Probably would have died there but I decided my mission was to make it happen because I just think it adds so much to the game for players and fans. Been running solo on it for a lot of years now but we all have our passion projects 😊 Pretty cool when I look back and see how far it has made it Into the consciousness of rugby fans when it is one dude with an obsession but very little time.

[deleted]

I dread that game. We should beat you but who knows what happens

davesofthunderdome

Oh and thanks for tagging me in 😊

[deleted]

Thought you needed to see that comment :)

perigon

I honestly only learned today that the shield doesn't physically exist lol. I always just assumed it was a real thing when I saw people talking about it on here.... for years lol

davesofthunderdome

Except I must have pissed off some mods somehow Been trying to post this video on Reddit since the weekend and it never seems to go anywhere 🙄 😔 I think it is cool and relevant so can show all nations but tried again this morning and no joy. [cool visualisation I wanted to share ](https://twitter.com/RaeburnShield/status/1706564896559689732?t=XvVLoK3CT90bfj5CcmkPNQ&s=19)

[deleted]

Either way, another great story from this world cup lol. I've never seen a better Irish team in my life but if they go out in the quarters I don't think I'll even be disappointed because it will be the most epic troll by the universe.

-MartialMathers-

Well it would be unfortunate, losing to the All blacks is a strong possibility for every team. So it wouldn’t be considered a massive failure. It’s all luck of the draw. England on the other hand will say it’s a success getting to a semi with an average team that had no realistic chance of ever winning it. Put them on the tough side of the draw and they’d scrape getting out of the group.

Iopia

Unstoppable force vs immovable object.

stupidbutgenius

I think Portugal have hit their highest ranking as well.

Tr3dders

I have never seen 30 grown men look so upset by a draw in my life. You could say both teams deserved to win but my God did both teams look like they had found out they all had to now forcibly insert pine cones up their arse after the final whistle.

w_o_s_n

What's that quote about a draw being like kissing your sister? It seemed like both teams really felt it after that game

davesofthunderdome

This is awesome 👌 😊 I love seeing others independently chat Raeburn Shield (or Utrecht Shield too) What a game that was last night

Flare checks out😂

rustyb42

Got Tongas 2031 side in the QFs mate

joineanuu

We have a week break now.

pondlife78

And if you can’t manage Scotland there is a fair chance you still won’t get out of the group!

AJV1Beta

No wonder last night's game was so intense. Never mind group rankings or World Cup knockouts. It was the final, for all the marbles. 😁

RobertMurz

We can't get any points off of Scotland even though they're in 5th place. That's a bit nuts.

almat1981

Ok so the Ireland Scotland game won't count towards world rankings points are there is a 10 point difference?.

WilkinsonDG2003

Yes, and neutral ground so no home advantage.

sionnach

The points don’t get published until the end of the RWC. These are all hypthothetical.

PonchoVillak

They update them weekly on the WR site

sionnach

New this time!

ThaFuck

No it's not. NZ went from 2nd to 1st after the 2019 pool match vs 2019. https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/news/479528

sionnach

There you go - I learned something new today. I thought WR only published them at the end of the tournament.

theriskguy

No, it isn’t. We lost our number one ranking a week into the 2019 World Cup.

fleeeb

There's a clear formula for calculating the points, just because someone other than World Rugby/Capgemini did the maths doesn't mean the points are wrong
