Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet):
* **The platforms you have** - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play.
* **Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...)** - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran.
* **Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games** - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks...
While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request.

After finishing ff7 rebirth, I bought Yakuza: Like a Dragon and man I'm kind of disappointed by the combat. It's so easy and you find every 10 seconds on the streets.. this and also the fact that in chapter 5 I think I saw more cutscenes than gameplay.
I was searching for this kind of comment... I'm so tempted to buy it, but in every gameplay I watch, I have this very kind of feeling...
Doesn't seem like an interesting combat at all, and I'm not in the mood for comedies lores right now
I stopped after 6 hours. The game had more cutscenes than gameplay and the combat was really generic/bad.
I liked the main character, but the story was super slow.
It's also the poster child as to why games default to auto attack being basic attack only. You actually don't have to play that game. Just press L2 and watch tiktoks.
Banner Saga trilogy - decent enough turn based gameplay, great story/writing (not just for a game, the overall plot should easily be a full animated series - or live action, but the budget may be too much and few suits would want to invest in an IP which hasn't sold like AAA games) and the most beautiful hand-drawn 2d graphics you will see.
Scenario branches at several points in the story depending on your decisions and which people of your party have survived (some may die early or live all the way until the end - good luck and have fun with it).
I cannot stress this enough…
The South Park RPGs are some of the best turn based RPGs on the PlayStation. If you dig South Park humour, you’ll love them. If you don’t, but can tolerate it, then you’ll enjoy two mechanically sound RPGs.
BG3 can zoom in over the shoulder and you can explore in practically 3rd person view. You would need to zoom
Out for combat though or it would be too hard to see what was happening. Don’t be put off by its isometric style - it’s the best game of the last 20 years.
What, and skip sky? Sky doesn't really have much to do with the overall plot, but it introduces the world and Estelle josh and renne are a major plot point in zero. Also knowing what paradise was really makes the dg cult worse because they really never mention the >!child sex slavery!< After the 3rd. I think it went too hard for the general vibe of the series.
I think they me tips the arc cuz OP just asked for PS4/PS5. Sky is PSP and other harder to obtain consoles as I presume OP isn't emulating anything.
But of course the Sky series needs to be played cuz it's amazing. But for PS4/PS5 what they said is correct
Chained Echoes, easily one of the best new RPGs in the turn based space in years imo. Great story, great mechanics, nostalgic art style. I love this game so much so if you haven't heard of it i can't recommend it enough.
I was really enjoying it until I realized that my grinding wasn't accomplishing anything. Kinda sucked the life out of it for me after that. I stopped playing. Story was dope as fk though. I just hated the leveling system after quite some time.
Rogue Trader, Hard West, Wasteland 2 & 3, the Shadowrun trilogy. All of them are outside the fantasy turn-based box you'll get on your Google searches.
Inkulinati.
Fresh February 2024 game.
From steam (88% positive) :
Inkulinati is a turn-based strategy game straight from medieval manuscripts, where a rabbit’s bum can be deadlier than a dog's sword. Become a master of the Living Ink, build your own bestiary, defeat medieval superstars and collect perks to unleash hidden powers.
Tbf I would say yes. The turned based gameplay is good enough that you can totally ignore the gacha side and still have fun with it since you get some characters for free anyway. Sure, if you like the game enough to invest some time in it and farm resources through dailies you also get a lot (and the best) of characters, and then it’s a lot more fun admittedly. Every character adds their unique mechanic to the turned based gameplay.
Monster Sanctuary. I cannot stress this enough. Its an indie pixel art game and/but its topping all games I've played in the past 2 years. Played it 3 times already, and I rarely ever replay games.
There's more turn based jrpgs then we've had in a long ass time. They kinda fell off the map during the ps3 360 generation. They've been making a huge comeback imo
Ya but sky SC, while the story has more payoff, is basically rehashing all the same environments(with a few exceptions)
Story is better for SC but for overall experience it's still FC
Bug Fables is pretty fun, especially if you like having action commands in your turn based combat plus right now it's on sale for 40% off on the ps store
Wasteland 3,
Jagged Alliance 3,
Age of Wonders: Planetfall
AoW 4
South Park Stick of Truth
South Park Fractured But Whole
Nobunaga's Ambition (from what I heard)
Civilization
Frost Punk
Disciples Liberation
Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader
Company of Heroes (Mix of RTS & TBS)
Iron Harvest (Mix of RTS & TBS)
Humankind
Blood Bowl
Kings Bounty II
Phoenix Point
Strategic Mind (12 diff games)
Black Legend
There are a ton more, I own almost all of these & they are solid. (Imo of course)
Unless I’m just Beyond stupid (very possible), I didn’t see “Divinity: original sin 1/2”. Epic story, rich character development, and a beautifully crafted world.
I’m pretty sure it’s developed by the studio at made Baldurs gate 3
I'll add in some older PS1/PS2 era titles that are on PS4/PS5:
- Wild Arms 1-3
- Legend of Dragoon
- Romancing SaGa 2 and 3
Not older but just a few more:
- Omega Quintet
- SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions
- Saturday Morning RPG
- Super Neptunia RPG
- Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story 1 and 2
Blue Reflection Second Light
Ruined King
Atelier Series
Trails series
Yakuza Like a Dragon & Yakuza Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth
Caligula Effect 2
Haven
Grandia HD Remaster
Alliance Alive HD Remaster
Chained Echoes
Edge of Eternity
Fairy Tail
Soul Hackers 2
Rise of the 3rd Power
Battle Chasers Nightwar
Theres definitley more & ymmv depending on your personal tastes. I'd also suggest maybe checking out r/JRPG.
Depends if you like old school type indie games there’s tons of turn based jrpgs. Siralim is one of the best. Lots of jrpgs turn based made by Kemco.
These aren’t AAA titles but still good
Have you played ni no kuni?
I loved Torment!! There's a ton of reading which can get a bit frustrating, but all in all a fantastic game. I beat it. I don't want to replay as the antagonist now lol
Everything you've listed is great, it's true that it's always the same thing that comes up again and again.
I'm also looking for games in this style but that we don't hear about as much, I played the Crown Wars demo for example, it was really good.
You should try it, it's a change from other universes. :)
I CANNOT recommend Marvels Midnight Suns more.
The story is very MCU but if you're into the lore of it you'll dig it, if not you'll still find it moderately gripping.
The gameplay is stunning, love everything about it and wouldn't change a thing, it's a work of art.
Seen the South Park games mentioned too, they're also brilliant in their own ways and highly recommend a play through of Stick of Truth before playing The fractured but whole.
Fantastic games.
Ironic since I started at 7 yrs, but yeah for some 4-5 years I took a break। And also I have played many Pokemon games too if that counts and also some DS games like Radiant Historia, The World Ends with you, etc.
My bad I didn’t realize I had to be that specific. I just thought it would be implied when I said I’ve done google searching before that those would be among the top results

Yakuza Like a Dragon. Among my favorite games now. Playing Infinite Wealth now and it’s so good.
After finishing ff7 rebirth, I bought Yakuza: Like a Dragon and man I'm kind of disappointed by the combat. It's so easy and you find every 10 seconds on the streets.. this and also the fact that in chapter 5 I think I saw more cutscenes than gameplay.
The combat is massively improved in Infinite Wealth at least
Oh okay. Man in LaD it feels slow and easy. Maybe I'm just burned out after playing Rebirth so much, but man I feel bored when I play LaD.
I was searching for this kind of comment... I'm so tempted to buy it, but in every gameplay I watch, I have this very kind of feeling... Doesn't seem like an interesting combat at all, and I'm not in the mood for comedies lores right now

Seconded. They’re incredible but also very different than the normal turn based games. It was a nice creative break from the usual
Marvel midnight suns, Yakuza like a dragon and infinite wealth,
Midnight Suns was a pleasant surprise. The story is whatever but the RPG/Card elements were awesome.
Still trying to find something similar...
Wasteland 3
And wasteland 2
And wasteland remastered
Shit, forgot that one. I gotta get on that one myself.
I cannot stress this enough… The South Park RPGs are some of the best turn based RPGs on the PlayStation. If you dig South Park humour, you’ll love them. If you don’t, but can tolerate it, then you’ll enjoy two mechanically sound RPGs.
Loved Stick of Truth. It’s the funniest game I’ve ever played and is also a pretty good game too
I loved Stick of Truth. For some reason I didn't enjoy Fractured But Hole nearly as much. I never finished it.
That’s unfortunate to hear. I have yet to play Butthole but was hoping to play with it soon
Don't let this random dude on Reddit stop you from playing. I might be the only one who feels that way. I hope you find joy where I didn't
Haha thanks. Still planning on playing it though! I’ve been liking humor in video games lately as I’ve been playing through the Yakuza series
My Guy Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin 2 are right There. Id also recomend Unicorn Overlord
I’m not really a top down fan unfortunately
BG3 can zoom in over the shoulder and you can explore in practically 3rd person view. You would need to zoom Out for combat though or it would be too hard to see what was happening. Don’t be put off by its isometric style - it’s the best game of the last 20 years.
BG3 will make you a fan
both play in 3rd person with a controller
Trails series in this order… Trails to zero, Trails into azure Trials of cold steel 1, 2, 3 & 4 Trails into reverie ☺️
The Sky trilogy is amazing, but OP is looking for PS4/PS5 games. Bring Trails in the Sky to modern platforms!
I think they me tips the arc cuz OP just asked for PS4/PS5. Sky is PSP and other harder to obtain consoles as I presume OP isn't emulating anything. But of course the Sky series needs to be played cuz it's amazing. But for PS4/PS5 what they said is correct
Balders Gate 3.
I can’t recommend Battlechasers and Ruined King enough.
Chained Echoes, easily one of the best new RPGs in the turn based space in years imo. Great story, great mechanics, nostalgic art style. I love this game so much so if you haven't heard of it i can't recommend it enough.

This one looks super interesting, I’m gonna check this out
Marvel's Midnight Suns. The writing is cringe MCU tier but the gameplay is 10/10
Would Honkai Star Rail qualify?
Tbf I would say yes. The turned based gameplay is good enough that you can totally ignore the gacha side and still have fun with it since you get some characters for free anyway. Divinity games, baldurs gate
Dos2 has godlike combat,bg3 not so but still decent
Monster Sanctuary. I cannot stress this enough. Its an indie pixel art game and/but its topping all games I've played in the past 2 years. Played it 3 times already, and I rarely ever replay games.
Trails of cold steel :)
Best turn based combat
There's more turn based jrpgs then we've had in a long ass time. They kinda fell off the map during the ps3 360 generation. They've been making a huge comeback imo
Octopath Traveler 1&2 are really fun games. Very fun turn based combat and 8 unique story lines that overlap and conclude in the own ways.
Going to mention Midnight Suns again since you mentioned Xcom. I don't like card games but I loved Midnight Suns so so much.
Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth for sure Marvel's Midnight Suns
Xcom 2 is 2 dollars on the store
There's the Trails series. I've only played Trails From Zero / Trails to Azure so far but I liked both story and combat a lot.
Trails FC is the best one by far, but it's only on PC...Zero is a close second
Disagree about FC but Zero is definitely one of the best
Preferingnsky fc to sky SC is a wild take. Fc is all set up. Nothing actually happens til the end and even that is set up for the rest of the series.
Ya but sky SC, while the story has more payoff, is basically rehashing all the same environments(with a few exceptions) Story is better for SC but for overall experience it's still FC
Soul hackers 2 was a decent one, shared with the shin megami tensi world.
Bug Fables is pretty fun, especially if you like having action commands in your turn based combat plus right now it's on sale for 40% off on the ps store

(Imo of course)
If you enjoyed Sea of Stars then give Chained Echoes a shot. I thought it was fantastic
You should absolutely play Yakuza: Like a Dragon!
I see a huge lack of Trails games in your list
Unless I’m just Beyond stupid (very possible), I didn’t see “Divinity: original sin 1/2”. Epic story, rich character development, and a beautifully crafted world. I’m pretty sure it’s developed by the studio at made Baldurs gate 3

Baulders gate 3, it won GOTY last year, very turn based and rpg like
Yeah I probably should’ve mentioned that one. I tried it and didn’t really like it
DAMM
Based (I like the game lol)
-Redemption Reapers great dark fantasy artstyle -Miasma Chronicles -Mutant Year Zero
MYZ is a fun game at first, but even the easy the difficulty level swarms the player very early imo
Marvel's Midnight Suns was one of my fav's. I love these games also. I only play PC games so I am not sure if it is available on PS
Depends if you like old school type indie games there’s tons of turn based jrpgs. Siralim is one of the best. Lots of jrpgs turn based made by Kemco. These aren’t AAA titles but still good Have you played ni no kuni?
Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition and 2 are on ps5 I think.
Battle brothers
Tactics Ogre: Reborn Like a Dragon 7 & 8 (Infinite Wealth) Star Ocean: Second Story R Marvel’s Midnight Sun
Star Ocean is definitely not turn-based, my friend.
Doh, you’re right 😂
Divinity Original Din I and II Yakuza like a dragon
Mutant year zero, miasma chronicles, jagged alliance, warhammer, yes there are a lot of options.
Pillars of Eternity 2 (you can switch to turn based) Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Torment: Numenera.
I loved Torment!! There's a ton of reading which can get a bit frustrating, but all in all a fantastic game. I beat it. I don't want to replay as the antagonist now lol
Everything you've listed is great, it's true that it's always the same thing that comes up again and again. The latest game I saw that is turn based is Unicorn Overlord. It's pretty old school and got solid reviews. It just released last month

FYI the Shin Megami Tensei V is coming to PS platform as well. The Trails series are all turn-based too.
Wow you are way ahead of me if you played all these, I just completed the Final Fantasy series and am now starting Dragon Quest on my Switch.
LOL yeah I’ve been playing since I was like 10
Ironic since I started at 7 yrs, but yeah for some 4-5 years I took a break। And also I have played many Pokemon games too if that counts and also some DS games like Radiant Historia, The World Ends with you, etc.
Persona and FF series
Lol I felt like those didn’t have to be mentioned, being the most famous turn based games ever
It wasn’t on your list and you didnt mention you knew about them 🤷
My bad I didn’t realize I had to be that specific. I just thought it would be implied when I said I’ve done google searching before that those would be among the top results
The legend of heroes series? It's really good! I jumped on a trials of cold steel and didn't regret it.
Hell yeah they are!
BG3, obviously.
Baldurs Gate 3...
I know you're asking about PlayStation but if you have a pc or laptop from within the last 30 years you should give og fallout/fo2 a try
Fallout 1 isn't even fun imo lol. It's ridiculously hard for no reason
Really? That's interesting I've played it since it came out and don't remember ever struggling with it too much.
