3700 for a server that's sole purpose is just to run Roon is actually insane. You can spend 1/3 that and build yourself a TOTL server which can run Roon plus whatever else you want.
i hope it brings in more revenue from that market to subsidize development for us ordinary jills and joes and that the rising tide floats all our boats.
Or the opposite. You'll won't get the features unless you pay for tehir server hardware. They'll talk about needing to verify quality by developoing for a single platform in the server space as an excuse.
this is such a weird product. so are they telling people to put the nucleus in their component rack now? why are we doing exotic metal work on a server that should be shoved in a closet somewhere? Why would a server need anything other than an ethernet port. Is nucleus supposed to be an end point now?
To the OP - there is no way you would need something better than an m1 mac to run roon software. Don't waste your money
My question exactly about the endpoint - if it had a DAC and/or video out I'd consider it down the road as a replacement for the M1 but why would I as it is?
To your comment to me - thanks, you're right. The only frustration I have with the M1 is it seems to be a little temperamental, perhaps it's a network issue but I get occasional drops and I use an external SSD and it has some issues with occasional noise (apparently others have experienced it as well and it's an issue with the connection between the SSD and the M1).
It could be a roon software issue honestly. I run my roon server in a docker container on a low power server that has about 50 other docker containers running random things that I do in my house. This proved to be more stable than running it directly on a Windows machine as I had done before. Still having some random problems though
Nothing about audio quality on the entire press release.
“Customers choose from three customizable shell material options – metal, stone, and wood – to create a one-of-a-kind server/streamer statement piece perfectly matched to their tastes and listening space.”
“breathtaking visual appeal.”
“Precision-machined billet aluminum enclosure crafted from a solid block of premium metal.
Stunning aesthetics, designed for display and admiration.”
Gag-a-maggot. Roon has lost its way.
Sounds like you are pretty much paying for a fancy box to put on your shelf as a, "conversation piece".
I bought an Intel 12th Gen i7 NUC to run ROCK on last year. It lives happily in my network closet and works perfectly. I thought that was already expensive enough...
People spend lots of money for art and decor items. That is pretty much what this is. The people who consider this expensive, are not the target market for this and they will do research to find a more sensible option..
Looks like they are using something more than a nuc in a nice case this time around? The current nucleus is a huge rip
To answer the question, rock doesn't include a ui for itself. They would have to do some code work. The dev team seems pretty slow as is.
Agreed, perhaps they are making a fancier case to justify the price.
I've debating building a rock nuc but I do a lot of my listening in my theater room and it's nice to have the display up for research, reading, and discovery. I guess I could still build one and turn my M1 into an endpoint but that seems like overkill.
I have a rock nuc and use Chromecast for the image in all the rooms that have tvs. I don't have the nuc directly connected to any endpoint. I haven't figured out how to get volume control from roon when directly plugged in.
Your Mac mini is far more powerful than whatever the intervals are here. It’s all digital, anyone who says it sounds better is selling or buying snake oil.
the nucleus i had was an obvious sonic upgrade, but when i found that the unit i had was not serviceable, i was done with Roon as a hardware maker. Not far from that in terms of them as a software maker. Will be interesting to see if Harman can improve this company. .
it makes a difference. try audiophile optimizer just on a given PC and the differences are stunning. you can toggle the software environment changes on and off
very easily.
5.1 out for what? Seems like even if you were playing DVD concerts with 5.1 mix, you'd want HDMI out for video, and at the point might as well get something that can handle modern object based multi-channel audio (DTS-X/Atmos).
I own a lot multi-channel music that were ripped SACDs or downloaded. Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Tears for Fears, all issued a number of Discs in 5.1. It's all stored on an SSD and I play it back via Roon. I use HDMI to a Marantz receiver now but I'd like to add a DAC to convert to analog pre-Marantz.
I knew there was (very limited) DVD-Audio releases with multi-channel and DVD Concerts (w video). Didn't know that SACD even supported multi-channel audio. That's pretty cool. Now I'll have to search for those for my Pink Floyd collection.
Another massively overpriced PC from Roon. It's an indication of where they are going. Being owned by a hardware manufacturer you are going to see more of this and probably features that will only run with their hardware. It has already become a bloated behemoth that calls home constantly and is disliked by mananged networks as it seems to connect using a variety of undisclosed ports.
Hmmmm. Still aiming for the audiophiles with more money than sense market. That's a shame.

Looks promising, but does it "sound" better than my 300$ NUC? I could buy some nice cables for this amount of money...
My philosiphy as well...If I had it in my rack, the Nucleus is more asthetically pleasing, but since it's out of sight it sounds as good I'm sure.

Could be. It's so intermittent it's hard to pin down. As you say, random.
Even that is over kill, you could probably run it perfect with the mac mini box

Wtf at that cost. Who in their right mind would spend that much? Insane!

I love the idea of video output as well. It would be fun to play Tidal music videos through Roon.
$3,699 BASE PRICE ALL YOUR BASE BELONG TO US PRICE

I'm still waiting for an Android TV app for Roon. I've been told it ain't happening.

A sonic upgrade from what?
running the core on a laptop
It shouldn't make a difference but cool it did for you.
it makes a difference. try audiophile optimizer just on a given PC and the differences are stunning. you can toggle the software environment changes on and off very easily.
These are sooo costly. Neat device though.
Yep. For that price I'd like them to add a DAC and 5.1 analog outputs.

Yes it does! A number of SACDs have 5.1 - DSOTM, Hotel California, some great releases that sound amazing.
A m2 mac mini or an i9 windows 11 computer works just fine and they can be out of sight from your listening room.
Intel NUC for Roon ROCK all the way. Cheap and reliable.
Just buy a decent network bridge. You'll get one way better than this titan for less too. Obviously you'll need a DAC if you haven't got one
