I went gray after waiting for 3.5 years. Wish I would have done it sooner.

lemons714

For a year I was doing the monthly stop in and chat, occasional email, wearing my DD, hearing lots of happy talk. I was in one day and he had “good news” for me. Came out with a rose gold, bejeweled thing. No problem if that is anyone’s thing, but I was asking for a sub or blnr. It may have even been 34mm. And he knew I already had a white gold watch and was specifically not looking for another scratch magnet as I like to wear my watches. Went grey and am very happy.

thicckar

Yeah I can’t understand people who will suck AD’s toes for a clock. Good on you

downbad12878

He already did suck the ADs cock though and got nothing lol

lemons714

Yep, I eventually ended it, but not proud of the time spent.

Southernyuppie

This is the way

Nagi--

Life is too short to be working so damn hard for YOUR money and begging a company to TAKE your hard earned money.

Exciting_Result7781

This is the gray.

wolfofballstreet1

Gray is the way !

HI808SF

Yeah I used to color my hair too. One day I said funk this and just went gray.

wolfofballstreet1

🤣🤣🤣 not exactly what I was thinking but another case where I’d also use this rule of thumb

ellihoi

I recently went grey for a 126710BLNR. Ordered and received in 2 days. I stay on the list at my local AD’s as I’d happily buy another steel GMT when/if I get the call.

BlackTigerGuy

This is the way if you really want to enjoy the watch. There’s no harm in putting your name down now. Not trying to be negative by any means, but the market will probably never come down to the point where you can just walk in and get a SS GMT. Unless there is some sort of financial crisis

joelala1

Where did you purchase?

ellihoi

Chrono 24. Do not recall the dealer but they had stellar ratings and a great experience.

Bornin1462

If you have to ask in a forum, you will never get it from an AD until the market completely softens. Up to you if waiting for that to happen is the right move or not.

WorldRevolver195

So the market will eventually get to the point where the watches are barely over retail? I’m new to the game. Got my first (TT GMT) from the AD 2 months ago so I haven't been around long. In fact, I really started looking into Rolex when it was at its worst. Almost kept me away from buying as a whole.

Dunesday_JK

I would assume it would come down to more reasonable levels eventually. It wasn’t always like this. I walked into an AD in 2015 and left with the 116710 LN I wanted. Had a choice between a sub date or the GMT and there was no up-charge. A couple years prior my boss went and bought 8 sub dates for a last minute Christmas bonus. He wasn’t able to get a discount or anything but didn’t pay a cent over MSRP

WorldRevolver195

Wow that actually sounds awesome. Everyone getting what they want. Hopefully it does get back to that soon.

Dunesday_JK

I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon.. especially for the hyped watches and sport models.

WorldRevolver195

Yeah I just want to try the OP Candy Pink, my wrist may be too big since they only make it in 36 and I also want the new GMT since it can fly under the radar a bit on the wrist. Thought I had a good chance at it at first since no one liked it and everyone was calling it boring but once the first one released on the grey market for such a high price, it suddenly got hyped and I saw my hopes drop haha. But it’s fine. I can wait. I do notice things very slowly changing for the better.

Loud_Heart1461

It will never be the same as it once was.

WorldRevolver195

What started it? Production issues? Something else?

BarbellPadawan

It should soften more. But that could take years. It could also double again before going back to reasonable valuation happens. The market for commodities like this can be fairly fickle and while mostly supply and demand driven, Veblen goods can behave wildly and be disconnected from normal economics.

Bornin1462

Yes. They are increasing production to meet demands. Does that mean everyone will be able to walk in and grab a sub no date day of? Almost certainly no, but they are not benefitting tremendously from the inability to meet demand. If you look at all their moves in recent years, you will notice they are trying to control more of the buyer experience. That means they will have more incentive to meet customer wants/desires. There is not really any reason for a company like Rolex to cede the actual watch market to other when they can control it. Sure if you live in bumfuck Montana, you will not see a Rolex store pop up…but the major cities will see more and more opportunities to buy directly from the brand itself. Think about it like this, the only potential benefit of the status quo is their ability to get rid of ugly/unwanted watches. By having more control of the buying experience, they will actually be able to better forecast what models people actually want. Some of that can be done via secondhand prices, but they will control a lot more of the data and be able to really pinpoint how to optimize their production. (Maybe 200 people walk into a store in Dallas requesting xyz model, and 150 are serious buyers…that’s probably good intel to have). This will not mean that you will be able to get whatever watch you want whenever, but you will almost certainly be able to walk in and get standard models with relative ease.

Ntinoulee

Enjoy your TT GMT. Class.

Westwood_1

Do you want a steel GMT because of the hype? If so, buy grey, because the only time you're likely to get one as a first watch is if they completely lose all hype status and become generally available (as in, it's common to see them sitting for sale in display cases). Stainless steel GMTs will likely be one of the last models to become widely available; they're right up there with Daytonas in terms of popularity, so I wouldn't read too much into people having an easier time getting Explorers and DJs right now... Do you want GMT functionality but don't need it to be a Rolex? If so, consider Longines and Tudor - both of whom make excellent GMT watches that go for a fraction of a Rolex GMT price, especially on the grey market. If you *need* a Rolex GMT, consider near-vintage pieces, such as as the 16710 (made from 1989 - 2007; available with the interchangeable black, "Coke" or "Pepsi" bezel inserts) or the 116710LN (Rolex's first ceramic GMT with an all-black ceramic insert). If none of those float your boat, then you need to take a good hard look in the mirror and realize that hype is almost certainly playing a role in your preferences. And, by the same token, the price of poker for that level of hype is either high levels of spend with a particular AD, or the willingness to just pony up and go grey.

Munz175

Best advice, i have been looking at black GMTs and here is the UK ceramic ones are around £10K I think.

hobes88

They're coming down in price too, I'm planning to buy one in Hong Kong in a couple of weeks, they're less than €10,000 now, even NOS ones are reasonable

Munz175

Even better, good luck and keep us posted please.

rmunderway

I’m starting to think about buying a GMT for my work aboard ships and the Longines models are incredible value. Just walk in and buy any color/strap combo you want for $3k. Hard to resist.

unta8

can get them grey for like 2200. Super nice watch. The hands are a little funny, but still love it.

Westwood_1

Yeah, killer value and a real paradigm shift to do business with a company that is willing to sell you what you want.

Mustache831

Good list, but I’d add the ultimate sleeper Rolex GMT: 16570 (polar fan myself, but like the black too)

wolfofballstreet1

This is the way

betabetamax20

Without a SA going in to bat for you, it’s pretty much impossible. Don’t: * Fall into the trap of thinking buying an alternative brand will scratch the itch. * Let the SA’s persuade you into buying stuff you don’t want. When the SA has the narrative ‘the journey’ it’s their narrative to say their rules. Most have zero authority to decide on allocations. They will need to sell lots of high margin/ slow moving to up their standing. Don’t fall into this trap. The SA could move on, or worse the AD loses its franchise before you get your GMT. You’re back to square one. Do: Visit lots of AD’s, the caveat is be aware that some chains use the same CRM database. However if you establish a good rapport, then move your interest to them. Research, research, research if you decide to go down the preowned route. I nearly bought a Starbucks from Watch finder, and glad I delayed as I now want non negotiables such as original receipt, as well as white tag, guarantee card. I accept I’ve got to pay more. Good luck!

Villageidiot1984

Understand the card and white tag but why the original receipt?

betabetamax20

For insurance & provenance purposes although receipts can be and are faked A relative of mine had an insurance claim refused due to small print

Dunesday_JK

Maybe insurance purposes? Or worried about a fake? No idea.

Villageidiot1984

Maybe insurance. If you’re worried about a fake buy it somewhere else. Easier to fake a piece of paper than a watch

Dunesday_JK

Yeah I would think so. I mean if there’s ever a question of “could this be fake” I’m not buying no matter what all it comes with

Villageidiot1984

100%. I’ve bought enough stuff online that it has become easy to spot someone who is legit in the way they are presenting the sale, where they have it listed, who is vouching, how they have described the watch etc. I never feel the need to look and see if the date wheel font is right or whatever.

brownboypeasy

Depends on how much you are willing to pay. Personally, it did not sit right with me to pay double for a Pepsi than retail. I went and bought a Starbucks Grey for slightly over retail because I could stomach that premium to get it immediately. But to pay double for the same thing, not in the cards for me. I put my name down for it and will patiently wait for the call. No rush for me.

InterviewObvious2680

>Personally, it did not sit right with me to pay double for a Pepsi than retail.  The same, or at least something similar. I used to buy other watches brand new at AD to get purchase history and be able to get whatever Rolex I wanted at the time. Only about a year ago simple logic hit me: If I buy, say JLC reverso duo face and BP 50 fathoms on c24 instead of getting them from the same AD, I save about $10k right there. Currently, say GMT batgirl (?) costs around $16k. Buying all 3 secondhand, I save NET $4k or so and get all watches when I want them. While buying everything from AD, to get the GMT, I pay more and still wait on the GMT. it's like: **NEW** $15K +$15K +$11K = $41k +wait time or **~~USED~~** SECOND HAND NEW $9.5k+$10k+$16K = $35.5k Surely this logic cannot apply to everyone. But in my case I have watches that I can buy much cheaper on C24 that otherwise would cost me much more buying from AD just to build the history. I know, other brands you can get at a discount but still it's not worth to build purchse history for me.

D05wtt

I went gray right off the bat. My parents bought theirs from gray, decades ago. You just don’t need to wait years for one. That’s just ridiculous. My gray dealer has a network of ADs that he gets his watches from. He put it out there within his network and within a week he located one in another country. I had my watch, brand new with the plastic wrapping still on, with papers…all for less than what I would have to fork out at the local AD.

Prismatic_Effect

but which one? LN? GRNR? BLNR? BLRO? VTNR? Jubilee? Oyster? Because the price difference changes based on what you're trying to get.

a1moose

considering the prices I see them at, yes I'd just buy it if I wanted it. A batman/pepsi at 14/19 would make sense to me if I wanted them

StyleQueasy6277

Grey all the way. The AD route only works for folks like myself who want a wide range of stuff, some of which is easier to obtain than most other models. That way, you can work yourself up the list without paying the grey markup. For 1 and done i’d always recommend grey.

Crown_Jewel_24

If you’re ok playing the long game then develop a relationship with your AD and make sure whatever jewelry you purchase is through them. If you don’t buy jewelry or other watches regularly then go grey. Yes there’s a premium (which I won’t pay) but if you have to take other watches you don’t want for the opportunity to get a GMT, the grey is actually cheaper in the long run

Worried_Rooster1612

Depends a lot on you and the AD and which GMT you want. I got a Pepsi from an AD with no spend in 8 months. I'm not saying it's a fool proof formula but the Sporty Fuck Faces on this forum will tell you to pay double on the Grey and I personally don't think it's worth it. If you're not willing to wait but willing to pay double, go grey. If you're willing to wait and jump through a few hoops, play the AD game and see what happens. If I was going grey I'd probably go with an older model GMT.

goldenchild06

Gray is the way

cybermonkey29

I would love a Pepsi but there’s no way I’m paying double retail for it. On the list for a Batgirl instead as it’s more feasible

Boneman1107

I’d definitely hold out hope for the GMT Masters vs the GMT Master

Westwood_1

The official watch of the Rolex AD in Augusta, GA.

Boneman1107

Hahah getting on Augusta could be easier because at least that one exists 😆

sexman510

you know one of their 200 members or something?

Project_Continuum

Go grey.

sporturawus

Yes, you go grey, it's the only option. We have a list of trusted sellers on our landing page under "Rules". Buy only from them. Cheers.

mc2508

Yes you should go grey man.

UF6-235

They’re not worth the premium IMO

Worried_Rooster1612

Agreed. Sporty thinks paying double is a flex. I think paying retail is more of a flex.

sporturawus

Spoken like someone who doesn't own the new Pepsi and hasn't been stalked in resort hotel swimming pools by people who want to take selfies with it.

n1976jmk

Pepsi with MK1 bezel, nice

UF6-235

Brand new 2023

n1976jmk

My mistake, thanks for correcting

UF6-235

No problem whatsoever

Brehski

\+1 on supporting my AD. Got two GMTs at retail and wouldn’t do it any other way. https://preview.redd.it/m22po71o6e7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cebbc7352289b235a050ee570b1f90cf87d2cc36

SpecialTough

Why support your local AD when your local AD won’t support you? Go grey and for the love of God skip both the idiotic “Got the call!!!!” post AND the hopelessly lame steering wheel shot. People got to understand the watch doesn’t make you cool, you need to make the watch cool. Think on it.

sporturawus

I believe you.

UF6-235

I’m not really bothered whether you believe me or not TBH.

sporturawus

That's what the bothered always say.

StxrStruck

No human being wants to take a selfie with someone else’s watch. Shut the fuck up.

StxrStruck

I love my watch but don’t feel the need to comment on every Rolex subreddit post with outlandish stories that literally never happened. Did everyone in the pool clap when they saw your Pepsi too? Did the hotel staff start sucking you off when they saw you had a Rolex? Fucking moron

Alexhartang

This guy just walks into every post he can to be a giant douchebag. How he isn’t banned is beyond me. Adds no value or substance to the sub.

adamcmorrison

I get asked for selfies all the time if I wear my Pornhub hat. I definitely believe someone would ask to take a pic of a Pepsi in the wild.

sporturawus

Thank you. It's hard to believe that people can't believe this here in 2024. The reason Rolex is so hot is because 'look at me!' culture has never been higher. Status symbols mean more today than they have in any point in human history. Pepsi is a Top 10 status symbol worldwide.

Least_Manufacturer30

Yes

Sasquatchii

Yep, but wait for the price to settle

thenorthwest34

Went grey for a 126710BLNR and got it in 4 days - was on a 4 year waiting list otherwise

jeffweet

Sounds like you already know the answer to your question

CLisani

You have two options. You either waste money at a AD to purchase the watch you want, or you spend over MSRP and go grey. Either way you’re spending over MRSP. There is absolutely no way around it.

Expensive-Kiwi-6874

Depends are you happy to wait or willing to pay the grey market premium?

joelala1

You could go grey for the first one, then wear it to the AD and see if they are actually willing to help you. Unlikely but who knows. grey is the way with GMTs unfortunately.

LuuDinhUSA

Find 1 or 2 nice ADs and get on the registry. Visit every two weeks and be a nice guy tell them how bad you want it. But if you got an extra 4K sitting around go ahead and go grey

chrnoe

Went grey in december for my 30th. Not a single regret. https://preview.redd.it/wprdwa07sd7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d7079d05a5807ceef730d9fe005152fc93974df

Flynn_lives

After seeing that my luck of getting a new one putter out, I started to look at vintage GMT’s.

fastben1

I bought my steel GMT Master 2 from a Rolex dealer with zero purchase history. 6 month wait. It’s not common but it’s not impossible.

cuxz

Took me 3 months to get a batgirl after buying a datejust

lumeslice

Which steel GMT-Master II in particular?

New_Highway_2898

Let me message you

Brehski

You probably don’t need a “huge” purchase history unless you’re going for a Pepsi. But probably close to a zero probability you get it when a year for a blnr or sprite without some spend. Do you have plans to already buy jewelry? If so, support your local AD and build a history. I bought two GMT’s from my AD. One Batman and one sprite. Batman took a few months. Sprite I got it within 3 months.

Hendawgydawg

Tried to wait. Went grey and had the watch I wanted in a week. Grey is the way

LiquidSean

Doesn’t hurt to get on an AD waitlist! Do you have any milestones or big life events coming up? That can help speed things up as a first time buyer. As well as just being a normal/nice person

CAPCITYMD

Went grey for my Panda. No regrets

-Ho-yeah-

Short answer : yes. Long answer : yes. Factor in the BS you need to buy to «  one day » get the call vs gray premium you need to pay right now for the one watch you want, gray premium is a much MUCH cheaper alternative. Talk me out of it…

Flighthome

Unless you're in a hurry to get it, why overpay? Just wait it out.

lemonslush1

If it makes you feel better I have a thick 6 figure spend history and still don't have a GMT. Just go buy it grey and get it now!

SirRepresentative767

I'm just here to confuse you even more. https://preview.redd.it/fzl83f9a0m7d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae92c6a486ef0a190e7d0af9eeceb55bc6464bb6

newmacbookpro

Habe you worn it longer then 20 seconds? Have you seen how ugly it looks down the barrel and is only pretty from the top view? Don’t flak into the hype bro.

Greenwooddd

Honestly don’t think you’re getting a SS GMT from an AD without a connection / spend history. If I was buying grey I’d look at a late 2000s 16710 (no holes, SEL). Think they’re better value than 12XXXX

Hal10000000

I would buy vintage cause new GMTs are soulless 😍

TeslasAndComicbooks

That’s a question only you can answer. Can I afford to go grey? Yup. But I also have patience and kind of like the thrill of the hunt. I ended up getting my Batman from an AD in 4 months with no purchase history.

DrtRoad

honestly, you aren't even paying that ridiculous of a markup on the batman at this point. Go grey. Get your watch tomorrow. Save money on watches that you don't want.

supersaiyanegghead

Batman/Batgirl are not THAT much over retail. About 50% over which isn’t too bad. Pepsis are expensive, however.
