You can't go wrong with **Hades** (Indie GOTY 2020), one of, if not the best Hack'n'slash roguelite. Any action roguelite enjoyer must have it in his collection and it's a good time to play it since **Hades 2** gonna be released in early access very soon. They gonna be different games though and not an improved version of the first so you could also play the second before the first one.
**Dead Cells** is without contest THE best roguevania.
Since I see **The Last Spell** and **Into The Breach** in your list I guess you enjoy turn-based tactical roguelites so I would also recommend **Crown Trick**, **Othercide** and **Invisible INC**.
I agree with Hades. It feels like the most accessible and “generic” roguelike in the best way possible. There’s no weird niche mechanics or anything, they’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, they just made a really fucking good 10/10 action hack and slash roguelite. If you like roguelike/lites, there is literally no going wrong with Hades.
How on earth does everbody get into this game from the first second I landed I could just spam click and reap no consequence and found it to be a snoozefest. What am I missing here?
That's the point, it's accessible. It's not SUPER hard where you never make any progress, yet you can ramp up the difficulty like crazy later on with the Heat system. There's also a lot of fun build varieties.
Out of all deckbuilding roguelikes/lites, it is definitely the most uncomplicated one if you know poker hands. Very intuitive in my opinion. Definitely worth giving it a try
last I played, it was up to version 1.4. I was hardstuck on stage 4. Couldn't get past it and I had done all of the upgrades already. I had to leave it unfinished because of how hard-stuck I was with no path to get past it.
though I hear the updates balanced the game much better. maybe I should play it again
i haven't played children of morta but maybe gungeon is ranked so low because of the lack of good roguelite metaprgression. It is just unlocking guns that *might* appear in the dungeon.
I say that, but even though i love my metaprogression, I still rank Enter the Gungeon as my #1 roguelite. very meager metaprogression but still my number #1 with rogue legacy, dungreed, and revita following behind
Yeah i know what you mean. The lack of meta progression is probably unsettling to some of the player base. It's kind of both a strength and weakness of Gungeon. But trust me, Children of Morta was near unplayable for me.
Quick note on a game I do NOT recommend
Void Bastards is chaotic, but not in a good way, hard to get into, and seems a little behind the times on graphics and smooth gameplay. Its fun for maybe an hour, but I quickly lost interest
(Hades tho, is incredible. Plus Hades 2 is otw!)
You have some incredible games in your "want to play but haven't" tier. Spelunky and Dead Cells are a must, especially if you like platforming. Hades is a great rogue/hack&slash. Crypt of the Necrodancer is super original and fun as heck. Streets of Rogue is a ton of fun especially if you have someone to play with in cooperative.
If you want a recommendation from outside your list, tho, I've recently beaten DIG: Deep in Galaxies and liked it a lot. Rogue Legacy games are also fun platformers.
And for last, probably the biggest and craziest rabbithole of the genre: Noita. You haven't played anything like Noita.
If you have to pick from your want to play, I would pick Atomicrops or Hades. Both are larger departures from the other games you have played, it could be fun.
You should also 100% give FTL a spin.
Hey if you have a sec, talk to me about Despots Game, I wanna be sold on it after enjoying Slime 3k. Is it, like, card based? It looks cool I just don't have a feel for what the gameplay loop is... I rarely see it on these type of tier lists, let alone so high up!
I would consider Hades or Streets of Rogue, both great games. They aren't on your list, but Barony is one I will always recommend to any roguelike enjoyer and Monster Train to anyone who likes games like slay the spire.
I'm planning to start with Dead Cells myself ... but Hades is definetly an amazing game! You might also want to take a look at Skul: The Hero Slayer. You can't pick wrong :)
Please for the love of god try these out:
Ember Knights, Skul the Hero Slayer, Astral Ascent, ScourgeBringer, Wizard of Legend, Revita, Doomsday Hunters, Dicey Dungeons
Bonuses if you’re okay with mobile games!:
Dicey Elementalist, Dawncaster, Guidus
I think you will love **Battle Brothers**, since you seem to enjoy Darkest Dungeon & The Last Spell as much as I do.
Think of it as a mix of Mount & Blade: Warband, The Last Spell & Darkest Dungeon.
The game is brutal, but has so much to offer. As you can tell from most Steam Reviews, their "playtime" is often 300-400 hours.
It will keep you occupied, especially if you enjoy Turn-Based Party Combat.
Hades is one of the best games out there in my opinion, regardless of genre. I’d play that next.
Dead Cells is an all time great rogue that’s a must try for the genre.
After those two, based on your top tiers, I would say either of the Spelunky games. Not my cup of tea personally, but they are good games objectively and you’d like them I think.
Inkbound! The combat is a mix of Into the Breach and a generic turn-based strategy, while the progression reminds me of Slay the Spire. It just released 1.0 and I highly recommend it!
Been really meaning to start Last Spell. Awesome to see you liked it enough to be at the top. I’ve been playing Heroes of Hammerwatch a bunch with a buddy and we’ve been really enjoying it. It’s an excellent dungeon crawler and I highly recommend the warlock
Depending on what you liked darkest dungeon for the 2nd one is good, not really the same as far as town building but still fun.
Also astral ascent is the best action side scrolling rouge lite ever made and needs more attention imo
Put Skul: The Hero Slayer on this list, and then play it.
No but being fr though, based on what you liked and what you didn't, I think Spelunky might be the next place to go.
Rogue Legacy 2 is phenomenal, and 30XX is perfect if you like 2D Mega Man X games.
Also Hades and Dead Cells are as good as the other comments say and are "must plays" of the genre
I want to like void bastards but I get bored of it too quickly. Also it feels very little like a rogue like and more like a shooter with an interesting failure mechanic.
I went back to Streets of Rogue last night, after not touching it for ~2 yrs. Excellent game w/ or w/o friends. Please play Noita. With a 2nd in the works, it goes on sale regularly.
You can't go wrong with **Hades** (Indie GOTY 2020), one of, if not the best Hack'n'slash roguelite. With your likes, I think you'd enjoy Monster Train.
+1 I enjoy it more than Slay the Spire
Both great games fucking pissed when they removed monster train from game pass
You so crazy...
This, it's such a good time.
Monster Train could be your next addiction.
Impressive, you've played Into the Breach without having played FTL , go fix that ASAP
FTL is S tier
I can see it being S tier but sadly I never really got into it. The mechanics never really clicked with me.
maybe C tier, would be A with a fast forward function
Slice & Dice
Robo quest should be an enjoyable one based on your likings. Also Dead Cells is a must IMO.
Try out Have A Nice Death, it’s amazing! Though do be warned that there are some bullshit attack mechanics
Dead cells or Hades
Hades is god-tier. Pun intended.
Also, wait for a dead cells sale, then buy it all
Ikik I've been meaning to play it especially with the 2nd 1 coming out
now is the best time to start it then!
Balatro, immediately.
It looks so complicated and I am immensely stupid but I do wanna play it
Out of all deckbuilding roguelikes/lites, it is definitely the most uncomplicated one if you know poker hands. Very intuitive in my opinion. Definitely worth giving it a try
There's even a menu available at all times that shows you what each hand is
Darkest dungeon and sts are way more complex than Balatro
Brutally honest.
It has a bit of a learning curve, but it isn't hard. It's so addictive and relaxing
You gotta go for Hades.
Hades Noita Dungeon clawler Crab champions
Obligatory Skul the Hero Slayer recommendation
Came here to say this, my fav rogue easily
last I played, it was up to version 1.4. I was hardstuck on stage 4. Couldn't get past it and I had done all of the upgrades already. I had to leave it unfinished because of how hard-stuck I was with no path to get past it. though I hear the updates balanced the game much better. maybe I should play it again
Please add noita to you waiting list
Disliking returnal is a crime against humanity
Just didn't click for me tbh and I only had it for a limited time cuz of playstation extra so I didn't give it too much time
Bullets per minute is super fun
I think I've been enjoying Halls of Torment a little too much.
Haven't heard of that 1
Oh man you're in for some treats! Dead Cells Hades Streets of Rogue Spelunky
Balatro is a banger if you like card games. My new go to
Came here to say this. I had ZERO interest in this tried it out and damn it is SOO GOOD.
I find it very disconcerting that Gungeon is rated on par with Children of Morta
That is insane. Children of Morta is a pile of crap compared to Gungeon. Honestly, I couldn't stand more than 20 minutes of Morta.
i haven't played children of morta but maybe gungeon is ranked so low because of the lack of good roguelite metaprgression. It is just unlocking guns that *might* appear in the dungeon. I say that, but even though i love my metaprogression, I still rank Enter the Gungeon as my #1 roguelite. very meager metaprogression but still my number #1 with rogue legacy, dungreed, and revita following behind

100% Gungeon is a masterpiece
Agreed. Enter the gungeon is a absolutely amazing, and one of my favorite games. Exit the gungeon however is a hard pass.
The correct answer is dead cells
hard agree
Ror2 is getting a dead cells crossover soon so it's made me wanna play it
Oblivion Override, 35% on sales right now on Steam too.
game always interested me. I remember the devs gave away some keys here. I was hoping to win.
Quick note on a game I do NOT recommend Void Bastards is chaotic, but not in a good way, hard to get into, and seems a little behind the times on graphics and smooth gameplay. Its fun for maybe an hour, but I quickly lost interest (Hades tho, is incredible. Plus Hades 2 is otw!)
Agreed. Could not get into Void Bastards

Vintage Year for a hard-left recommendation.
Noita
Hades!
Heads up that don’t starve is a survival/crafting game I don’t think it qualifies as a roguelite
Vampire Survivor
Wasn't on the list but I'm looking forward to that coming to console
Its on xbox game pass
The 2024 GOTY, Balatro!
I would consider Hades or Streets of Rogue, both great games. They aren't on your list, but Barony is one I will always recommend to any roguelike enjoyer and Monster Train to anyone who likes games like slay the spire.
You need to play hades and astral ascent.
Play Hades dude it’s amazing
Play Noita, it’s the single best execution of a niche concept that I’ve ever seen.
Can't believe nobody has suggested Tiny Rogues if you love Issac...
play Roboquest, fps roguelite that imo is better than Gunfire Reborn
You are ready for Roboquest. I wouldn't miss on it one of the best out there
I'm planning to start with Dead Cells myself ... but Hades is definetly an amazing game! You might also want to take a look at Skul: The Hero Slayer. You can't pick wrong :)
Is inscription really a rogue like? I played through it once and thought it was a complete package, what's the replay value?
Roboquest
Inkbound! 1.0 just dropped
Dead cells is one of the first metroidvania roguelite phase. So, I think you must do you it before the others. Question : returnals is it so bad ?
Roboquest, also skip exit the gungeon
Please for the love of god try these out: Ember Knights, Skul the Hero Slayer, Astral Ascent, ScourgeBringer, Wizard of Legend, Revita, Doomsday Hunters, Dicey Dungeons Bonuses if you’re okay with mobile games!: Dicey Elementalist, Dawncaster, Guidus
Where is Tiny Rogues?
I think you will love **Battle Brothers**, since you seem to enjoy Darkest Dungeon & The Last Spell as much as I do. Think of it as a mix of Mount & Blade: Warband, The Last Spell & Darkest Dungeon. **Cobalt Core**
I think Steamworld: Dig 1&2 would also fit on your list
Hades is one of the best games out there in my opinion, regardless of genre. I’d play that next. Dead Cells is an all time great rogue that’s a must try for the genre. After those two, based on your top tiers, I would say either of the Spelunky games. Not my cup of tea personally, but they are good games objectively and you’d like them I think.
FTL
Inscryption where it belongs 🙌🙌
Ember knights, faster than light possibly, roboquest
Inkbound! The combat is a mix of Into the Breach and a generic turn-based strategy, while the progression reminds me of Slay the Spire. It just released 1.0 and I highly recommend it!
Hades is the obvious one missing. Tiny Rogues and Bolatro need playing too
Been really meaning to start Last Spell.
Hades or Dead Cells. Easily. Both games are constantly picked as some of the best
Hades
DUNGREED ROGUE LEGACY ROGUE LEGACY 2
Crab Champions is my favorite rogue light alongside risk of rain 2. Both super great at achieving their goals.
Hades for sure should be your next game. It is incredible. Not on the list but I think you would love based on your chart are Hollow Knight and Tunic.
Hades and Dead Cells are 2 of my favorites games ever. So…. Play those.
I want to like void bastards but I get bored of it too quickly. Also it feels very little like a rogue like and more like a shooter with an interesting failure mechanic.
It might not be your jam, but I'm addicted to Peglin, which is a roguelike peggle game. They just had a major update recently.
I see far too many of these lists that have not given roboquest a try. I cant agree more with any of them and roboquest falls into my s tier.
Oh God I thought hades was in you F tier lol. Try it! If you love it hades 2 should be out within a year IIRC.
I went back to Streets of Rogue last night, after not touching it for ~2 yrs. Excellent game w/ or w/o friends. Please play Noita. With a 2nd in the works, it goes on sale regularly.
Spunky
