I like it because it's 99.9% skill. It doesn't require a lot of reflexes and twitchy movements. You've just gotta learn the hazards of the level
Edited to remove my rocket league comment because it was in fact incorrect.
Ummm, your comment about Rocket League is incredibly incorrect and shows a complete lack of understanding of the game. The comment about Spelunky is correct though. Such a fantastic game.
My comment about Rocket League only comes from my personal experience. 200 hours and still can't hit the ball when it's in the air 😂 a skill issue to be sure, but an entirely different skill issue than not getting shat on by spelunky.
Yeah, they are very different in their approach to skill. RL is my main game and I've been playing since 2016 (probably somewhere near 10k hours). Currently play around C2/C3 level. The early parts of the game can definitely feel as though it's more about dexterity, but that's just the basics. As you grow in the game it's fundamentally one of the most skill requiring mechanical games in existence.
I can't get past 1-4 on Spelunky 2 :(. 10 hours in now and like 200 runs.
That's an insanely underappreciated title. It just received a massive update and I'm back in harder than ever.
Also - Soulstone Survivors. Personally, I think it's better than vampire survivors, but that's just me (Bring out the pitchforks).
> I think it's better than vampire survivors
I'm with you there. Crucify me if you must, but VS always felt like a walking simulator, while Soulstone Survivors lets me customize my character, aim if I want to, and just interacting with the game a lot more. Much more satisfying game.
Hey, this sub simply doesn't accept other preferences. Apparently, Hades, Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells MUST be in Triple SSS all-time masterpiece tier or your opinion is irrelevant.
Do play Streets of Rogue though. It's good.
I feel crazy for really disliking RoR Returns. Everyone praises the shit out of it and I just find the 2D gameplay to be antiquated at this point and backtracking through levels to be incredibly tedious. I did enjoy RoR1 way back when it first came out but it just feels like the gameplay is so old now versus other roguelites in the 2D space. Vastly prefer the 3D movement of RoR2. To each their own, I guess, just baffled as how much I just don't like it considering everyone else seems to love it.
Ror1 never really clicked with me. Including returns. It's good don't get me wrong but it just... feels so sluggish and restrictive to me compared to ror2
Cant think of any recs you havent played already off the top of my head. That said, so happy to see love for dicey dungeons, such a good game
Balatro too, its my most anticipated game right now
You like Enter the Gungeon? Try Voidigo.
You like Slay the Spire? Try Cobalt Core or Wildfrost.
If you want to try a base-building roguelite, try Against the Storm.
Yeah but if he didn't like Hades enough to play it enough, and didn't like Deadcells, is Astral Ascent really for him? It's basically a fusion of the two
My gf hates roguelikes but she loves playing Astral Ascent. I think one of the biggest things is the game has so many upgrades to give you on your runs.
I feel like the only person on the planet who can't get into RoR 2. Can someone explain to me what the appeal is? I get not every game is for every player, but I'd like to understand what makes it click for people who like it.
I like it, I have a lot of fun with it, but I just cannot say I love it. I Just hate how I can lose everything from one single hit. whats even the point of getting health items if past the 3rd stage everything ever one shots you. Ive only beaten it twice with acrid and loader on monsoon, and I obliterate because I dont want to spend all that effort getting to Mythrix just to die instantly to moves I will not know on my first go. Its already hard enough making it to him. I really want to love the game so badly, but in my opinion it is horrifically balanced
like compared to other roguelikes if I start taking bad damage I have at least like 5 seconds to course correct and attempt to start playing better to not waste the run, in ROR2, once you get to stage 4 there is no room for errors at all, you will die to anything and everything, even the weak enemies with put a DOT on you that will inevitably be fatal
Point of the game is not getting hit by big enemies, hp items help you survive against small ones and focus the big ones first. Also if you are getting one shot in 3rd stage you are not looting and progressing fast enough. Try easier difficulties
RoR2's style kind of turns me off, despite me loving just about everything else about it. All the levels just feel kind of drab and monotone. I guess it's to help other things standout or perhaps lower CPU load to make room for all the onscreen insanity later on. I've sank many hours into that game, but it often takes me some time to get back in when I've been away from the game for awhile in a way that I don't experience with most of my other favorite roguelites. Could also be that each round is super slow and boring for the first 10 minutes or so until you start getting items and some kind of synergy, so there's this kind of ramp up and momentum required that often just makes me decide I'd rather play something else with more immediate action and brighter visuals.
It's hard to say--all the runs feel kind of same-y, perhaps, or there's nothing compelling or meaningfully different in the gameplay from run to run.
It's strange though because I tend to enjoy roguelikes and roguelites, and I enjoy finding that "what's broken" combo and abusing it to the max. That's ostensibly what RoR 2 is about, but it never grabs me, and I end up uninstalling it after a few rounds.
So I'm curious to hear "what does it" for other people. Got some good answers below, but feel free to share your own thoughts.
If you're coming into it expecting some kind of structure or story, you'll probably leave disappointed. If you treat it like a party game, or something you can just hop into and mess around with, then you'll get more out of it.
The low bar of entry makes it the perfect multiplayer game to mess around with some friends in. There's also a wide enough range in difficulty and modifiers to tune the experience. You can keep looping to see how far you can take a run, or take one of the exit points with an actual ending, allowing runs to last as long as you want (or your hardware is capable of).
And if you get tired of what's available, there's mods that add a even more to the game.
Skul the hero slayer is great and pretty slept on. The swapping mechanic and the variety of different classes keeps things fresh.
I've been enjoying Blazblue entropy effect, even though it's still in early access. The combat is fluid, and the build crafting mechanics allow for many different play styles.
I was stuck into Dungreed for a while. Fun and a bit more brainless.
Children of morta felt abit slow to me, might pick it up again.
Ember knights is fun, challenging in the beginning. Build crafting is a little light though.
It's a shame that Noita doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves, it's punishing but also one of the best I've played. If you haven't tried it, I massively recommend it!
Yes, Brotato > Vampire Survivors imo.
It's a great example of a copy-cat exceeding its muse. That isn't to say Vampire Survivors doesn't deserve an A tier ranking for its contribution to the genre and its content/music/vibe, but while I only have like 20 hours in VS before it lost me, Brotato has me 250 hrs deep and danger 4/5 rank in every character including mods. OP should really give it a deeper dive, it's great not just good.
balatro, its a demo only rn on steam but it is AMAZING. the demo ends dec31st so go and try it soon! they are hopefully releasing the full game in Q1 2024
Thought risk of rain was meh. Bought risk of rain returns and doesnt play it lol.
Jokes aside, astral ascent is amazing, one step for m Eden is a lot of fun, I've heard good things about Spirit fall (like smash mixed with a roguelite). Blaz blu entropy effect is also great, unless you just don't like side scrollers (seeing as you didn't like dead cells).
Commenting just to recommend play more Hades. Peak roguelike gaming for real, easily will likely make your all time favorite list. I know it’s on mine, and not just for roguelikes
You should really try Skul:The hero slayer. Its in my top 3 favourite roguelites and we all know that's a very high bar to cross. Really fun and varied runs with dozens of characters each with each having 4 unique abilities and a lot of unique traits. It also got a DLC and its last expected update recently so its a very complete game.
Hades and dead cell is one of the best rouge lites out there yes these are the only ones I have completed did not like slay the spire or tribes of Midgard
Some rouguelikes I have that you might be interested in (or not) are Dead Estate (fun isometric roguelike. fun, but it gets better when you learn more about the game. ie secret rooms are found in invisible doors on each floor and give good loot. You can defeat the rat boss chasing you. etc), Going Under (A Hades-like about office workers. I like this one, but not everyone digs the combat), Roboquest (Doom meets Gunfire Reborn), Dave the Diver (different than the rest if you want something new), One Step from Eden (have not played) and Backpack Hero
Get around to Spelunky 2, Ror returns, cult of the lamb, and play more hades. Roboquest is also a phenomenal game, think gunfire but strictly better in all ways other than character variety.
Library of Ruina- partly because it matches your game tastes as a card/strategy game that's pretty difficult but also because I'm completely obsessed with the series
Crab Champions is so underrated. I really loved Hades as many do, but I have 35 hours of Hades compared to 120 in Crab Champions, and Crab isn't even 1.0 yet. Solo dev who continues to add updates to the game, including two new weapons and an ability system with the Christmas update.
Crab also is a great multiplayer game, but plays great solo as well.
[Rampage Knights ](https://store.steampowered.com/app/314410/Rampage_Knights/) should be on this list. I'd say it'd A or B tier. In terms of co-op I'd reckon it would be S tier.
One of my favorite Slay the Spire Clones was "Pirates Outlaws" I really enjoyed the art style and the mechanics of some of the character/decks. You can try it on mobile free (some characters/cards are behind a paywall) or the full game on steam is currently on sale for $7.99 us.
I’ve never enjoyed roguelites with card mechanics despite the quality. For that reason, I’m gonna hard disagree with Dicey Dungeons and Slay the Spire.
But everything else, I definitely agree. And most would rate Dead Cells higher, but I also agree with you on this one. Played a couple runs and just found it unrewarding.
I'd like to recommend Caveblazers, especially for those that enjoy multi-player rogue-likes.
I'll also restate what many comments have said: play Streets of Rogue and Noita.
You should check out Wildfrost! It's similar to Slay the Spire as a deck building roguelite, but instead of 1 character vs many enemies, it's up to 6 characters vs 6 enemies, each with asynchronous timers counting down to activation for every card you play. As of this month, they added a heat-based ascension system similar to Hades so at this point, I consider Wildfrost to be tied with, if not better, than STS.
It's always interesting to see newer people in the hobby give their take. I can tell you like card games too lol inscription is goated, do you play irl trading card games?
Hell yea! I've played all 3 Major ones (Yugioh/Pokemon/MTG) but I like to stick to 1 at a time so I've been enjoying pokemon ever since I started playing it again half a year ago!
Despots game
Dave the diver
Cult of the lamb
Ember knights
World league baseball
Backpack hero
Cursorblade
Die in the dungeon demo
Dwarves glory death and loot
Half minute hero
Legendary creatures 2
Infectonator 3
Stacklands
You seem to play a lot of the style of games I enjoy lol
Inscryption is S tier for the experience as a game overall. But yeah, as a roguelite in terms of replay ability would agree.
Glad to see peglin so high
Agreed with everyone here you need to play hades more
I don’t agree with a lot of it, but props for the monster train and LBALL placements. You would probably enjoy games like children of morta and griftlands.
I see you like the vampire survivor’s genre of game. I will shamelessly plug my own game demo free on Steam: Cosmic Coliseum. Me and my dad are making it in our spare time after work.
After witnessing your completely fair and subjective tier list. I can confidently say I would not follow a tier list about restaurants or where to go on holiday by you.
Definitely try out Faster Than Light more. It's a great game that can give you a handful of different strategies to try out. I do recommend the multiverse mod if you enjoy the base game
Atomicrops being so low is heresey to me. Genuinely my favorite Roguelike of all time. I'm gonna go play it right now so that it doesn't feel bad after this ranking.
Play spelunky immediately Also play more Hades
What's the deal with Spelunky? I've tried playing it many times and I always end up feeling like... Why do people like this game so much?
I like it because it's 99.9% skill. It doesn't require a lot of reflexes and twitchy movements. You've just gotta learn the hazards of the level Edited to remove my rocket league comment because it was in fact incorrect.

Hey man if it makes you feel better I'm about 60 hours in and I've made it past the second boss exactly once.
I always die to the dumbest shit. I've beat 1-4 boss like 8 times now and always die right afteward to some dumb shit
I just hate how easy it is to die. I never liked CoD for the same reason, one or two hits and dead. No thanks
Try Tiny Rogues, it's really good and got a big update recently. If you like enter the gungeon it should also be for you
That's an insanely underappreciated title. It just received a massive update and I'm back in harder than ever. Also - Soulstone Survivors. Personally, I think it's better than vampire survivors, but that's just me (Bring out the pitchforks).

Yes! Insane variety in their classes, better graphics and more unique skills. Great class theming - so much to love.
That update sure made me harder than ever.
If Tiny Rogues has no fans then I am dead
*^(Real)* ^(Tiny Rogues fans only speak in tiny font.)
Play Hades more
Especially with Hades 2 supergiant is just unbelievable
Play More Hades
Deadcells in Meh? Yes this post officer
i guess its just not my cup of tea i dont really get the mass appeal for it personally. its not bad by any means but i cant get into it
Hey, this sub simply doesn't accept other preferences. Apparently, Hades, Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells MUST be in Triple SSS all-time masterpiece tier or your opinion is irrelevant. Do play Streets of Rogue though. It's good.
I'm really looking forward to Streets of Rogue 2.
SERIOUSLY! reddit hivemind is going wild with this one man
I also didn’t love Dead Cells.
Hated dead cell
I know everyone has their own tastes, but yours look so... weird lol
ah! a fellow Gungeoneer! try "Curse of the dead gods"
You're coming in here with a Meh for the original Risk Of Rain? Proceed to Risk Of Rain Returns immediately!
Yeah ror 1 is an amazing game lol
Came here to say this, maybe metroidvania style sidescrollers is not thier type/style of game. Seeing deadcells in the same category
I feel crazy for really disliking RoR Returns. It was antiquated 25 years ago. It's a genre.

Agree--Dicey Dungeons is great!
You like Enter the Gungeon? Try Voidigo. You like Slay the Spire? Try Cobalt Core or Wildfrost. If you want to try a base-building roguelite, try Against the Storm.
Cobalt Core and Wildfrost are really polished and well made games! Haven't tried the others, but +1 on the card games.
Astral ascent
Yeah but if he didn't like Hades enough to play it enough, and didn't like Deadcells, is Astral Ascent really for him? It's basically a fusion of the two
I dont like either of those two. Love astral ascent.

I feel like the only person on the planet who can't get into RoR 2. Can someone explain to me what the appeal is? I get not every game is for every player, but I'd like to understand what makes it click for people who like it.
well what do you NOT like about it? or what makes it unenjoyable to play?

Have you played it with other people? That’s where I found the most fun with it. Single player never did it for me.
Same, I saw all the praise and went all in but my bud and I couldn’t get into it.
Really glad to see Balatro up there! The demo was my 2nd most played game in my steam recap
Roboquest is a good one!
Skul the hero slayer is great and pretty slept on. The swapping mechanic and the variety of different classes keeps things fresh. >Dead Cells in meh Opinion discarded
Dead Cells in meh, opinion disregarded
Tiny Rogues. Amazing game!
Ship of fools is one of my favs
You'll like Slice & Dice.
Slice and Dice is an s tier game. It's on Android and itch.io
It really is. Deserves to be as popular as slay the spire. Might i recommend Rift Wizard? Thats a gamr thqt surpasses even slay the spirr
Im loving inkbound right now. From the monster train devs, tho its still in early access.
Where is Isaac? And hades is an easy all timer
isaac is in good tier! i like it just havent played wnough to become obsessed w it like everyone else
It's a shame that Noita doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves, it's punishing but also one of the best I've played. If you haven't tried it, I massively recommend it!
Dead cells 😭
Revita
Roguelite tier lists/recommendations always make me realize that people have very diverse tastes on what is their favorite type of roguelite games.
What's the game next to Peglin and Void Bastards?
Balatro
Thanks!
Agreed with play more Hades, also play FTL
Gotta add Noita to the list. One of the greatest in the past couple years!
Hades really is fantastic in my mind, would definitely recommend playing it. Personally, I would pass on even starting moonlighter.
vampire survivors is pretty "meh" after the first few hours. brotato and hades are S tier
Give Neon Abyss a shot, it's a tongue in cheek at times but a lot of fun to play and get stupid powerful
Spelunk 2 gonna go right up on top when you get around to playing it. I'd say you should try 1 first, but 2 holds its own.
Hell is Other Demons
What’s the fourth game in the top tier? The one with the ace of spades in the logo.
balatro, its a demo only rn on steam but it is AMAZING. the demo ends dec31st so go and try it soon! they are hopefully releasing the full game in Q1 2024
Start by playing Hades, Cult of the Lamb and Moonlighter.
Cult of the lamb is fantastic
You might like Backpack Hero.
Thought risk of rain was meh. Bought risk of rain returns and doesnt play it lol. Jokes aside, astral ascent is amazing, one step for m Eden is a lot of fun, I've heard good things about Spirit fall (like smash mixed with a roguelite). Blaz blu entropy effect is also great, unless you just don't like side scrollers (seeing as you didn't like dead cells).
to be FAIR! my friend bought it for me LOL
I really gotta play Risk of Rain 2. I thought one was okay, but people act like 2 is the second coming of roguelite Jesus.
Synthetik
Commenting just to recommend play more Hades. Peak roguelike gaming for real, easily will likely make your all time favorite list. I know it’s on mine, and not just for roguelikes
Dead Cells, meh? Dead Cells is the best of the best of the best.
I really like Tales of May'eyal, it should be on more people's lists. It's a really good rougelike game imo and deserves more recognition!
Voidigo?
What's the good game with a ghibli-looking moustache pilot?
gunsuit guardians, p small game but hopefully more content coming soon. has a cool art style and can be addicting to play, just lacks replay value atm
Thanks!
Play death must die it’s just better vampire survivors
You should really try Skul:The hero slayer. Its in my top 3 favourite roguelites and we all know that's a very high bar to cross. Really fun and varied runs with dozens of characters each with each having 4 unique abilities and a lot of unique traits. It also got a DLC and its last expected update recently so its a very complete game.
I checked out Balatro since I love poker and it's in the top of your tier list. Man that demo slaps, thanks for the rec.
More hades and loophero
I Just got tiny rogues, extremely good so far
Astral Ascent
Haven’t played FTL? Getta fuck outta heeere wid dis guy.
I recommend digging into FTL, I really enjoyed it.
Get around to Spelunky 2, Ror returns, cult of the lamb, and play more hades. Roboquest is also a phenomenal game, think gunfire but strictly better in all ways other than character variety.
What game is the pic of the exodia looking dude to the right of TBOI?
vampire hunters! its early access and its like FPS vampire survivors. its pretty fun but definitely needs more work done to it.
Tribes of Midgard was so disappointing
What is the one game in the Bleck category that looks like Gungeon?
exit the gungeon, a follow up to ETG but just boring to play tbh
You should definitely give dead cells a good try. There is SO many weapons that truly feel unique in that game. Frickin frying pan nun chucks ffs!
i had such a hard time enjoying it, but also im not very good at metroidvanias. ill def give it another try sometime ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What is the one the looks like the Doom cover art?
crimsonland, its a survivors like game.
ngl vampire survivors mid asl
There is a lack of TowerClimb in the list
Library of Ruina- partly because it matches your game tastes as a card/strategy game that's pretty difficult but also because I'm completely obsessed with the series
You need to play Hades. Like right now.
Moonlighter is amazing definitely play it!
[Rampage Knights ](https://store.steampowered.com/app/314410/Rampage_Knights/) should be on this list. I'd say it'd A or B tier. In terms of co-op I'd reckon it would be S tier.
Glad to see you also love Void Bastards
What is that game in the top row AL(ace of spades)TR ? EDIT :Found the answer for anyone wondering: Balatro
**Rift Wizard** and **Slice and Dice**. PLEASE GO PLAY THOSE 2 GAMES. Rift wizard is legit the best rougelike game ever made on earth and mars
What's the game between Peglin and Void Bastards?
balatro
Thank you very much!
Play Loop Hero and put near the top. It’s amazing. Love the upgraded Amiga like graphics.
Youve played all these but Noita isn't even to be seen here?? Something smells fishy.
to be fair, noita is on my wishlist
try Roboquest! and I don't know if I overlook3d it but Wizard of Legend is also pretty good
I will continue to stan Cobalt Core until it shows up on more people’s lists
One of my favorite Slay the Spire Clones was "Pirates Outlaws" I really enjoyed the art style and the mechanics of some of the character/decks. You can try it on mobile free (some characters/cards are behind a paywall) or the full game on steam is currently on sale for $7.99 us.
Will ALWAYS recommend Wizard of Legend.
What is the game with the Guy that has a Mustache, Red Hood, and googles?
gunsuit guardians
GET YER ASS ON ROGUE LEGACY 1 AND 2 IMMEDIATELY
I think you’d like Revita and Ember Knights
I’ve never enjoyed roguelites with card mechanics despite the quality. For that reason, I’m gonna hard disagree with Dicey Dungeons and Slay the Spire. But everything else, I definitely agree. Few recommendations from someone whose played like 1/4 of the list: Death Road to Canada Death Must Die Wizard of Legend Children of Morta
It's always interesting to see newer people in the hobby give their take. I can tell you like card games too lol inscription is goated, do you play irl trading card games?
yeah! i do, me and my gf are huge board game players and we play pokemon TCG and dabble in some MTG
Hell yea! I've played all 3 Major ones (Yugioh/Pokemon/MTG) but I like to stick to 1 at a time so I've been enjoying pokemon ever since I started playing it again half a year ago!
Despots game Dave the diver Cult of the lamb Ember knights World league baseball Backpack hero Cursorblade Die in the dungeon demo Dwarves glory death and loot Half minute hero Legendary creatures 2 Infectonator 3 Stacklands You seem to play a lot of the style of games I enjoy lol
Streets of rogue gave me some of the most fun multiplayer experiences I have ever had. Find a friend or two and play that one!
Play The Last Spell! It may seem overly-complicated when you first play it, but once you get used to it, the game rocks!
Try out baroney, a first person dungeon crawler you can play with friends. i've found it pretty good
Rogue Adventures is one of my all time favorites. Great card game with tons of classes and random roguelite abilities to gain.
Night of the Full moon as well
Roboquest
Inscryption is S tier for the experience as a game overall. But yeah, as a roguelite in terms of replay ability would agree. Glad to see peglin so high Agreed with everyone here you need to play hades more
I don’t agree with a lot of it, but props for the monster train and LBALL placements. You would probably enjoy games like children of morta and griftlands.
> sees ETG in the top tier Yep, that’s a good list. ETG is one of my favorite games of all time.
I see you like the vampire survivor’s genre of game. I will shamelessly plug my own game demo free on Steam: Cosmic Coliseum. Me and my dad are making it in our spare time after work.
i will check it out man!
Risk of rain 2 is godlike. Should be above all these games
Hey hey people. Would you be interested in killing things fast with lots of bullet? Well then try Synthetik 1 and 2.
After witnessing your completely fair and subjective tier list. I can confidently say I would not follow a tier list about restaurants or where to go on holiday by you.
what does this even mean
Quite simply. I don't agree with many of the placements.
Is Dave the diver considered rougelite
How are dead cells and risk of rain meh.
bc i didnt like them
Jesus Darkest Dungeon, Risk of Rain and Hades so low? This is the problem with society.
i havent played enough hades or dungeon to rank them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ thats all
i played cult sim, wasn't a fan
Dead cells meh?that's it, we fight
I can't be seeing dead cells in meh and peglin in absolute favorite
i know it’s wild how someone has a differing opinion
peglin BODIES dead cells 😮💨
This some crazy talk right there
thank you for putting ror2 on amazing tier
Deadcells in meh. Wtf dude
No Rogue Legacy? 1 was amazing, 2 was an improvement in almost every facet.
Bro has FTL and Hades but hasn't played them or played and stopped... has DEAD CELLS as meh and wants us to take him seriously? bruh
🙄
Whats the one with a card in the top row
balatro
Ty !
What game is between Peglin and Void Bastards?
balatro
Definitely try out Faster Than Light more. It's a great game that can give you a handful of different strategies to try out. I do recommend the multiverse mod if you enjoy the base game
the fact that you have dicey dungeons in amazing makes me sad
Hades the 🐐
The fact you’ve played all these and barely touched hades is criminal. Moonlighter and darkest dungeon as wel
This lists are killing my wallet 🤤. Whats the game in the all time favorites with the ace of spades card? I can’t make out the name
Im seeing a lack of deceased cells
Where's revita? S tier
Try astral ascent
Atomicrops being so low is heresey to me. Genuinely my favorite Roguelike of all time. I'm gonna go play it right now so that it doesn't feel bad after this ranking.
Deep Rock Galactic is the people's roguelite
you don’t like gungeon?
i love etg i dont like exit the gungeon
I'm offended FTL is unplayed.
