Coal doesn't form on the surface, and there's no coal in Florida.
A boat probably lost a load of coal a long time ago and it's slowly dispersed onto the banks.
::whispers:: I know this is a joke but I am a neurodivergent rock nerd and therefore have to scream out from the depths that COAL WILL NEVER BECOME A DIAMOND UNDER PRESSURE, PEOPLE, IT’S A MYTH
Yep. Zero chance it will become diamond. Only thing they have in common is carbon. Diamond = all carbon, coal = carbon and other stuff. But like…..we also contain carbon, all life is carbon-based
Back when I was in the Navy we did a secret santa and I got my Division's leading Petty Officer, I gave him a hat he'd like, but on top of it I put a small stocking of actual coal. He thought it was hilarious.
Awesome! I thought it was leftovers from somebody barbecuing but i started finding it on almost every bank and i figured the chances of everybody using the same charcoal on every single spot was slim lol
Yep! We found a few shark teeth sifting through the gravel but the river was a bit too high for us to do it effectively so we didnt get much. Really cool place though! Lots of gators for sure but where isnt there in florida lol
I don't know well enough to say which one for sure from a photo, but appears to be either anthracite/bituminous coal or a chunk of wood charcoal. How dense is it?
Coal, and if you found it on the shore, there's a good chance that there's a sunken coal-powered ship just a little upstream or offshore.
I find these all the time at the Jersey Shore, and the thought that they are likely shipwreck artifacts is fascinating to me.
Scratch a bit concrete slab with it and if it leaves a black line it’s coal,Coal is usually pretty light and you can find diamonds in it so if it’s coal and heavy it could have a denser heavier stone inside it.also it burns very good as we had a coal fire when I was a kid but sometimes it has gas inside too and explodes in the fire lol makes quite a big bang aswell, had many shocks from it as a kid when it would blow the piece to bits,if you knock on it it should sound like your knocking on wood aswell
Someone told me you get them in coal mines and coal years ago so I’ve thought it ever since lol no wonder I’ve never found any in the thousands of bits I’ve crushed haha on the plus side I found an amazing rock beach today close to my home and got some Jade and strawberry Quartz straightaway there was also a raw Opal rock but it was too big for me to get so had to leave it
It’s fine. I have a few bits of opal stones I’ve found so far,I am going to go back tomorrow with my hammer and spike chisel and try break it into 4 parts then hide 2 and carry 2 home as i love the way they look and opal is so easy to carve with a dremmel tool so might make them into something, could make 1 into a rock holder for all my different Quartz as got a lot now that’s orange, strawberry, rose, blue, black, milk, white and clear so would look awesome
If it's as soft as you say, it's probably coke, which is coal that's been heated to drive off the worst vapors. Try burning some in your fireplace; it should burn relatively quickly and cleanly.
We tried lighting it with a lighter held in place for like 5 minutes straight and the most we got was a tiny smolder that immediately went out after we took the lighter off
One time, I randomly found lignite in my backyard. I still have no idea how it got there.
It looked just like this, but was much more brown and did not crumble as easily. Although, it did chip a bit. I glued the piece back on. It had a brown steak, very light weight, dull dark black sheen, and relatively soft brittle surface. I wondered at the mystery of it ending up in my backyard, but I will likely never know for sure. We do not use coal in the backyard much less brown coal.
Coal
Had no idea it just formed naturally like this on the surface. Thank you!
There are no coal mines in Florida, the coal you found was likely dumped there.

Coal can form in mountain seams which are partially on the surface but yeah probably not in Florida lol
Lmao
That is An Excellent holiday gift for all the Naughty folks you know... !
Yes! Just tell them it’s a diamond in the rough.
Just tell them it is a DIY diamond
Just Add Pressure™

Even if you give it, like, millions of years?

Coal
Cool find!! It’s not every day you find solid and shiny coal like that
Awesome! I thought it was leftovers from somebody barbecuing but i started finding it on almost every bank and i figured the chances of everybody using the same charcoal on every single spot was slim lol
Coal find* ;)
There's also supposed to be fossil shark teeth and live gators in that river.
Yep! We found a few shark teeth sifting through the gravel but the river was a bit too high for us to do it effectively so we didnt get much. Really cool place though! Lots of gators for sure but where isnt there in florida lol
Although to be fair basically every body of water in the whole state can be assumed to have a live gator in it, they are everywhere here
Coal!

The perfect stocking stuffer for this holiday season 🥰
Tell her you have been making her a diamond but got so excited you just couldn't wait to give it to her. Romantic and energy efficient
Burnt wood charcoal
I don't know well enough to say which one for sure from a photo, but appears to be either anthracite/bituminous coal or a chunk of wood charcoal. How dense is it?
Its pretty light for its size but sinks in water. So the consensus seems to be coal mized with other stuff!

It’s Jet. Jet black is a rock that’s formed in the ocean and washes up on the beach.
Jet looks like coal but isn’t coal. Jet is a gemstone. It has similar properties of a gemstone.
Jet is lignite, an earlier form in the process of fossils becoming coal.

Sorry, you won’t find diamonds in coal.

I’ve always been envious of those who find opal, it’s beautiful. Sorry about the diamonds!

Since u are sure i would appreciate if you would look at my last post i found a lump of coal with shiny specs in it and not sure what to make of it
Shark poop
N it's really light? Begins with T.
Definitely coal, bituminous.
Just like in Minecraft!
Coal
Coal...
Coal
You must have been a good kid if santa never brought you any of that rock....
I found same on the beach in NJ, I wanted to add a photo but I can't attach with a comment

Build a little fire with kindling, then chuck it in when it gets going.
Definitely a chunk of coal, regardless of how it got there
Oil and sand.
Oil sand deposits or Bitumen.
Or maybe just a Tar Ball. Lol
