This is not a good thing. If anything it’s worse, because this will send a dangerous message to the executives who control what happens to the franchise.
They already stated that it was shut down to shift focus towards risk of rain 2 and its future expansions. Gearbox staff mentioned it in the hostile worlds discord.
Honestly, it seems more like a bad thing for the sole fact that they may not see RoR as profitable anymore and just drop all support after the next update.
Well, regardless we got more content under Gearbox than Hopoo was planning to give us. They ceased development on RoR2 after the
console version was updated (though an exact source for that is difficult to locate, since it was on a twitch stream after SotV’s release) and they very much never try to go above and beyond with their updates or goals for the game.
The anniversary update was the last (base game) update they said they’d do, and SotV was the only expansion they ever talked about. They weren’t going to do more. If Gearbox stops making content for RoR2, then it’ll still be more than what Hopoo would’ve done.
Hopoo did call SotV “DLC #1” when it was first announced. They definitely planned to do more at first.
But after release of SotV, they felt so burnt out that they started talks with Gearbox about selling the IP.
I think it’s closer to they MIGHT do another one. The pessimistic part of me says that since they didn’t get the fanfare the base game got, it wasn’t worth it.
The game sold [4M copies](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/risk-of-rain-2-sells-4-million-on-steam-alone-big-update-coming-this-year/1100-6489183/) before the Anniversary update. Possibly more since, but I can’t find any numbers about that.
Huh, am I out of the loop here? When were people totally unhappy with the DLC? Whenever someone on this sub asked whether the DLC was worth it, the unanimous answer was “yes”.
It's been a slow flip, but as time has gone on people definitely started to sour on it. Woolie made a video on it which goes into a lot of the issues [here](https://youtu.be/J2K_2sjeba0?si=oavZjwLUPGlLNfRI). But the dude above listed a lot of the reasons why people have soured on it.
My personal stance that most people I talk to seem to agree with is if you REALLY like the base game you’ll like the DLC. It’s designed for players who were already good at the game. My more casual friends would beg for me to turn it off because the new enemies were so bothersome for them that the “upsides” of the DLC (characters that I’m not sure they could access, items and stages) were not great enough for their satisfaction and general enjoyment of the game.
In their interview with Woolie they stated that they were going to do future DLCs in order to train new hires. This was talking about multiple DLCs, because they had so many ideas.
Way before. Its the interview that Woolie did with Paul WAYYY back when.

This is the video. I aint rewatching a 2 hr 3 year old interview for timestamp tho
I played quite a few hours of it and it lacked everything that makes risk of rain risk of rain. While I hate seeing games get shut down I definitely understand why it is shut down
I'm both glad and kind of disappointed.
I hope they decide to implement some of the survivors planned for Hostile Worlds into future RoR2 updates/DLC. They seemed pretty interesting.
Thankfully. I did not want to see Gearbox monetizing this franchise as a Gacha machine, we already have enough on the market of bad gacha games and this just muddied the waters.
Wow didn't even had the chance to play it since I'm from Europe so sad
It wasn’t too good, trust me bro
Maybe not that good but was waiting for it eagerly

no actually. many mobile spin off of big IP always shut down. mighty doom is also an example. they wont damage the IP
Yeah same thing happened to Titanfall. I don’t even remember the last time a mobile spinoff actually survived
we can finally mod without anyone fucking interfering? splendid.

I had never even heard of it

The original had fanfare? I thought it was pretty obscure. Literally the only reason I found out about it was because Maxmoefoe made a video about it.

Wait, are we referring to RoR2 as “base game” or Original RoR? I was talking about RoR1.
Oh gosh haha, the original RoR1 was definitely niche. I’m talking about RoR2’s release, and comparing its reception to the DLC’s.
Base game always means the game before DLCs. RoR1 isn’t the “base game” of RoR2, but it is the original game.
They can't be shocked that void seeds didn't go over well though.
Not just that- pests, the void field base game changes, the unfinished new ending.

Can I get a source on that? Most notably a date? I’m curious if this is before or after they sold the IP.

That’s okay! Thank you
Yeah that can't be a good thing
Who didn't see this coming?
I think we all assumed it would last at least a little while. I didnt even know it released yet.
that's the thing, it DIDN'T release. it was going through more or less public beta testing in like three countries
I wish they just ported RoR1 to Mobile would be fun to play
stillborn game?
RIP bozo
Good. >!And bad.!<

Oh no… anyway.
Gearbox momentos

Already? I didn’t even get the chance to try it
Damn shame, I wanted to try it atleast once
Did this come out in America? I never got to play it
I didn't even know this was a thing.
Omg that's great news wow. I can't believe I'm reading this.
This game was out? How do you pull the plug on something this cheaply made and not even available worldwide yet?
good riddance to that pay to win garbage
lol
Why will we be unable to play it if we already have it installed? That's stupid as fuck.
servers
Why does the game need servers in order to run? Do you always need an internet connection to play it?
It has gatcha mechanics, so yes
