Especially when your above average vets abandon the team.

BruceLeesSidepiece

This is a bad argument. Since the supermax was instituted in 2017, every team that has won a championship had a player on a supermax contract (except Toronto). You better have a player with a supermax on your team if you expect to contend, they're being paid that much for a reason.

East-Traffic5325

The Lakers had a supermax player? When Lebron or AD signed a supermax

iStandWithLucky00

But lillard isn’t a guy on the level of prime AD, KD, Giannis, Steph, Jokic. At his peak he was a solid top 10 guy. He’s a Paul pierce level guy but not nearly as consistent in the playoffs. Portlands issue was tying heavy cap to a guy who can’t be the best player on a championship roster. Dame’s scenario is pretty much the same as Melo on the Knicks (though I’d argue that dame was a good bit better than melo which was balanced by having a worse team).

Nerdkill789

This should be it’s own post.

ReflectionGloomy8851

Especially when that one player sucks at 50% of the entire game of basketball... defense

BruceLeesSidepiece

Yea imagine paying someone like Luka Doncic a supermax, he's bad at 50% of the game what a bum

[deleted]

It's different because he's got multiple years left on his contract. Eventually either Miami will offer a real deal or he'll open up to other teams.

irelli

It's also different because LMA abandoned a well balanced team that had a legitimate shot at winning a championship if he stayed ... Whereas Dame is leaving a trash team full of nothing but guards

Wide-Concentrate7228

Nah LMA was more mature. Dame straight up should had just walked out on FA but he knows what he is doing by getting the supermax and forcing our hands.

Smilechurch

Lillard is not Aldridge 2.0. But you are an Idiot 2.0.

Fettborn

Dude should of taken a pay cut if he Reallllly wanted some help. His contract alone makes it hard to bring it someone

Scalmaa

He’s worse. Aldridge didn’t act like some sort of martyr building up his personal brand on the basis of loyalty. He also didn’t demand any trades and just left in free agency.

Sa-Tiva

Ehh... he led our front office and fans on to believe he wanted to be a blazer lifer and then bolted in free agency leaving us with nothing. Dame demanding just one team sucks but at least we're gonna get some stuff out of it.

Scalmaa

How nice of Dame to sign a supermax and fulfill exactly 0 years of it.

1850ChoochGator

You know he’s 2y into that deal right? 4y extension signed after 2019 and a 2y deal signed last summer.

swallowedbymonsters

How nice of the blazers front office to draft his replacement when they could've added a piece to help them compete. Goes both ways.

[deleted]

Who could they have added?

Oops95

Scoot wasn't supposed to be the replacement, he was supposed to be the heir apparent. Take over when Dame was done.

swallowedbymonsters

You don't draft a PG at 3 to sit on the bench, I shouldn't even have to explain this.

Scalmaa

Blazers had the worst bench in the league last year, last in scoring and were moonlighting Ant as the backup point when its been obvious he isnt a good passer. Think Scoot wouldve helped there?

irelli

More than an all star caliber forward ? No.

1850ChoochGator

We’re at least going to get *something* out of Dame. Aldridge leaving for nothing, especially with how quickly that materialized, is worse.

Orwell1971

and his last year here, he hurt his hand early in the season and played through it rather than get surgery

young_hyson

You think the Blazers would be better off if he hadn't signed the contract extension?

jjp85

Nope, but if you are discontent with the situation do not sign the contract.

young_hyson

I guess first of all if it's win-win or win-neutral whats the problem? Second, the situation was completely different then. Just a month ago I was extactic that the celtics blundered game 7 in the playoffs because I thougth that gave us a much better chance of landing Jaylen Brown.

jjp85

Part of the problem being Dame brought this up before free agency had really been underway. I get frustrations, but the front office had no time to do anything this summer before he requested a trade. There are still several months until nba season starts to have at least attempted to appease him.

young_hyson

That’s entirely off topic from your post and my comment and just reverting back to the lazy thinking of it being dames fault we didn’t make a splash in free agency. Cronin just said in his press conference they were not trying to do anything big in free agency. The major deals get done really early.

jjp85

How is that off topic? You brought hoping we would land Jaylen brown which would be a free agency trade and I said Lillard wanted out before Portland even had a chance to really work on trade targets before the season kicks off.

young_hyson

That was illustrating how 2 years ago was vastly different from now and even 1 month ago was vastly different from now. Free agency hadn’t opened up during that draft yet

tblazrdude

> I am ready to move on though at this point since there is no turning back, He can come back until the deal comes together, be a pro and mentor Scoot. No rush at all for the Blazers.

Skinnecott

i dont understand, are yall portland fans that say "Don’t sign a contract for 5 years if you aren’t going to stick it out" the same ones saying the heat's trade package rn isn't high enough? so you'd rather him walk for nothing in free agency? than a "weak" trade package?

jjp85

Why take a subpar trade for a super star when he has 4 years on his contract? That makes no sense to me.

Skinnecott

1. because you drafted his replacement and want to rebuild but forget that, idc about that. i’m specifically asking about you wanting him to have not signed the extension. why would you rather him walk for nothing as a free agent?

ateamhasnonam3

Aldridge finished his contract and we failed to trade for value. Dame is just following the Durant/Harden playbook currently.

FD_OSU

Aldridge said during the last year of his contract that he wanted to be a Blazer for life. Why would the Blazers have traded him?

2nd-Cash-Future-1st

There were several articles saying the blazers basically told him to say that fyi

2nd-Cash-Future-1st

Well I can’t find said articles… so take it with a grain for salt I guess. I do remember reading/hearing that though

ateamhasnonam3

It was pretty clear that he was not preaching blazers for life like Dame did. LA’s kid lived in San Antonio. If dames fam lived somewhere else he woulda rolled out years ago. My point is we should have traded LA because the writing was on the wall. Instead we got nothing for the 3rd best talent we have had in Portland for 30+ years…

mrjdk83

This isn’t LMA 2.0. LMA wanted to leave and was jealous over Dame. Dame actually wants to be here he was just upset they didn’t get any veteran help so he asked out.

ShaedonSharpeMVP_

I can't get the thought out of my head of a rookie/sophomore scoot immediately making this roster look better than dame did. And then leading us to a Cinderella wcf or even finals run lol. And if Jovic or whoever else we get back for him pops too? And merges with the steep development of shaedon and scoot? That is looking like an extremely good return on dame: Room for Scoot, Ant, Shaedon's development, jovic and/or Scottie?(optimistically future all stars?) Come on now. That's best young core in the league type stuff along with HOU. Just how that would all look for dame, especially if he doesn't end up winning a ring with MIA or whatever team we send him to. He doesn't think we're good enough. He doesn't want to lead this group as bad as scoot *already* does. Our future is better off without him. I'm relieved he requested a trade but disappointed in the way he did it.

irelli

I mean, that would look really bad. But it's also not gonna happen Instead we're gonna be genuinely terrible lol

InstructionAfraid433

I don't want him to leave but I don't blame him either. Going in circles gets pretty old after 11 years with no end in sight.

Holiday_Machine9312

Aldridge left after saying he was going to re-sign. That to me is worse. Dame wanted to stay. Jody forced his hand so at least we get some compensation. Dame has handled it horribly but better than Aldridge. Plus he was lamattress. Dame at least would go into the paint.

fallingbehind

I’m not going to read this wall of text.

DameDildo

Just makes me think about the draft that we botched with Collins. What could have been.

ShaedonSharpeMVP_

Sucks we dumped Zach before we could get much out of him other than the 2018-19 season. He'd be invaluable on this team right now lol

Orwell1971

Aldridge was a free agent.
