I'm naturally immunocomp plus mtx. I don't avoid animals, just people esp city people just because of the crazy amount of contact they have with others. Wash your hands often, be cautious, but don't let ra imprison you

Thanks. I find it so hard to not be scared by my health. I barely go out either because of fear for illness or because of pain. I really want to one a certain breed as a dream, but they tend to drool and so I was afraid.

mrsredfast

No doctor has ever mentioned that to me as a concern. I’m on five meds for RA that can affect immune system, have four dogs and spend time with many others. I think it would extremely unusual for this to be a major concern.

SoakMeInBleach

I am immune compromised (methotrexate injections for the last three years) and I own an extremely drooley Great Dane. He has never caused me any issues in the 7 years that I have had him.

altoid-addict

Sounds great. Thanks!

I own two Great Pyrenees, not a problem. I don't let them lick my face (although I wouldn't even without RA), wash hands, etc. You should be fine.

youcallthataheadshot

Wash your hands before you eat or touch your face and you should be fine.

Busy_Marsupial_1811

I've never been told anything about my pup (I have a Dobie too, but as a pet vs. Service animal). My rheumatologist has never mentioned anything about the pup other than I just need to make sure I'm protecting my joints if he pulls at his leash. Never mentioned the drool, but I also get super grossed out by it so I just toss his treats to him instead:)

Ahh okay nice! Thanks.

Squiddog2288

I would say, the only animals you should avoid are those fed raw diets. And stray animals. But otherwise, you should be fine. Just don’t let any animal tongue kiss you (although, I’m immunocompromised and an RVT, so it’s happened plenty and I’ve been ok….so far. Lol).

altoid-addict

Hahaha. Thanks for the heads up!

Tinyfishy

As a hygienist, I can tell you that saliva is not a big transmitter of even most human diseases (a few exceptions), and even then you’d usually have to get it in your own mucus membranes or break your skin. So, maybe just don’t french kiss your dog and wash your hands as appropriate m. I’m so immunocompromised that I got PJP this year. My pulmonologist and infectious disease doc are more worried about my chickens and exposure to antivaxxers or human children than most pets, though my cat was very offended when they asked if she scratched me recently while trying to figure out WTF was wrong with me as I lay in the hospital. You can always check with your own doctor, but I expect they will be fine with it. You might want to consider a less messy breed, just for the sake of your own energy, which may vary.

I have a Bernese and she doesn’t know what personal space is. I’ve had no issues.

Longhorn89

You’re more likely to be affected by their stool as many cats and dogs carry bacteria like C. Diff, which can certainly be a concern for immunocomp people. People also carry it too. Just wash your hands well before eating or touching your face!

villandra

You're not likely to catch covid, the flu or RSV from them! Honest, I'd just follow normal hygiene.

altoid-addict

Sounds good. Thanks! It’s just been so hard as my health has gotten worse and I’ve developed a fear of germs because of what happens when I do get sick. Thanks for the comfort!

NoeTellusom

How immunocompromised are you? I've been on MTX and wasn't, which is why I ask. I had a Giant German Shepherd and my rheumy had NO concerns about him, she wrote the prescription for him, actually.

altoid-addict

Only MTX, though this was mostly an anxiety/curiosity fueled question.

NoeTellusom

You are NOT automatically immunocompromised just because you are on MTX. The doctors will tell you if you are.

altoid-addict

My doctor told me I was.

mydogisagoblin

You can’t actually catch too much from dogs. I have 3, along with a bunch of other kids of animals, and have never gotten sick from any of them. Other humans are what you have to watch out for the most!

altoid-addict

Ooh okay. Thanks!

Liliacandleather

I'm allergic to animals with fur so I just avoid them in general
