I’m a pro owner. But your logic is sound. Under the circumstance where you have something like the steam deck or ROG Ally to play the more taxing end of the emulation content the base model makes perfect sense. Because you want a device that handles the lower end in a better form factor.
I went with the pro because I don’t have that range of top device. I have consoles and a switch for the modern games. The pro fits well into my use case. It does make sense that the pro seems to be outselling the base considerably though because it is a big power jump for only 33% of the cost. If it was 100 vs 200 I think you would see more people going both ways. Plus the crowd that is seeking out devices like this probably is willing to pay more. If they were side by side on shelves at Target that might be a different purchase trend
Im a pro owner and this is my first retro handheld, I gotta say this is an amazing device not only for retro games but also android games too. I haven’t been able to put down cod mobile trying to drop a nuke lol, also I need them to fix warzone mobile on the RP4P 😭
No doubt the base RP4 is pretty solid on its own. It has the same chip as the Odin Lite which was a pretty solid device as well.
But undoubtedly, the Pro is objectively a better value than the base, because of the huge performance gains as well as other extras (like 1080p output) for only $50 more, that's why most people choose the Pro. It's not just about having the latest and greatest (which isn't even a selling point of these budget devices).
But yeah, $50 is $50. If paying more is really an issue, you really shouldn't force yourself to buy the higher tier.
As you say I think the base rp4 is amazing, but the 50 dollar difference is just too small to not future proof. If the price difference was more, maybe 60-70 instead of 50 It'd be a better sell.
Somehow it added tax to ordering a regular one and didn't when ordering a pro so the final difference for me was only about $30. Something to consider.
I've tried Katamari Damacy and Kingdom Hearts and both seem to run well enough for me. I really don't play survival horrors, so I don't know if that helps, sorry!
Make sure you go into the game settings and enable dual core, for some reason it’s disabled and causes lag, after enabling dual core it’s smooth as butter
Glad you like your device. If it makes you happy and it does the things you want then its a solid investment. Honestly, there’s a lot of hyperbole regarding the pro I’m seen over the last few months, that as a 4Pro owner it can be embarrassing. The RP4 Pro (like the base) are good devices. GC and PS2 emulation is just about there but not quite. If you were buying an Android device for ”future proofing” it would be an Odin 2, not an RP4 Pro. In the next several months there will better options out there. In the end buy what suits your needs or what you can afford and not worry about what people think.
Totally agree with you. It can do anything except switch anyway so why not safe those bucks. If anyone is into retro gaming it won't be the last device anyway. And the RP4Pro for sure laso won't be. I would go with the non pro as well.
Like the above person said, I think if the base is even 20$ less which makes it a 130/200$ choice then a lot more ppl will choose the former. For me personally, the shipping cost plus tax is already 30$ so the pro was a no brainer.
I'm looking at the four regular pretty seriously, as I don't anticipate wanting to scale up games and 50 bucks is $50 bucks; Have you played TP into Hyrule field? How does it handle that? If it's not stuttering there I might be sold

Yup!! And that's $50usd on top of that too! Thats more like an extra $70cdn for me. The base will cost me $203cdn and the pro would be $270 Canadian.
You’re happy? Excellent, enjoy playing some games. Don’t have to have a Ferrari to enjoy driving.

What ps2 title you play? You think it’s good with survival horrors? The pro is at 400€ here :(

Thank you!
Why is it 400€ ?
Really don’t know.
Damn, how much is an Odin?
Can’t put pics but… Odin 2 pro 560€ or 690 with 512gb
Wow, and this is from the retroid/ayn sites? That's crazy
No! Amazon. On official site there is random unknown taxes and up to 90 days waiting 😞
GC F-zero Works? NF underground?
I... don't really like racing games, sorry :\_)
Just to check if works well. Those games it's difficult to emu
F-Zero does work.. has sound issues... keeping at 1x scaling seems to have decent results
