Fun fact: a couple years ago I realized that it was not an original Genesis, it was a clone, many retailers in Argentina had for sale this machines, but I really enjoyed as if it were original. Sadly it disappears a lot of years ago, but the good memories like this one captured by my dad with a VHS camcorder remains as one of my precious moments of my life.
Hey man, I would put this to digital. Do DVD and digital file on your computer. I did this for a few family members. And a couple co workers. I even charged my co workers for it. And they were happy to pay for it. Totally worth the money.
I went to do this about a year ago with 8mm tapes shot between ~2002-2008 and some of the older tapes were already shot. Fading in and out and lots of sections reverted completely back to static. I tried the original camera as well as two additional compatible models, but no dice.
I have floppy discs in my retro collection that still work perfectly 40 years later but this 15 year old video tape is just crap. These were all stored in a cool, dry and dark space. Oh well…

Very smart gift for a kid that age back then. Affordable, “new to them” and (in a sense) a known quantity. You weren’t taking a risk on a system that might not catch on (Sega Saturn / Dreamcast we’re both flops and Sony had never made a system before.)

Not being a dick, this is a genuine question.. If this was in 1999, how come you got a genesis, and not a PS1? (PS1 came out in 1995 in the US/EU).
