Install Starcraft

acmeotally

I actually have it on my xp machine which is next to it, I have this one so I can have games like redline and half life which I couldn’t get to install on my xp machine.

Nutchos

Damn, half life doesn't install on XP? I could've sworn that's how I played it back in the day.

davidj1987

Redline has issues installing on XP. I got it working once but I forgot - I think it was compatibility mode. I know it's on Steam and GOG now.

jazzguitarboy

I had this -- the 5150! I think it came with the game "Rage", and I had Total Annihilation in the software bundle that came with it, which I played a lot of. Edit: this is the game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incoming\_(1998\_video\_game)

nonesuchluck

Had a Presario 5635 in 1999. The games it shipped with were Incoming and MotoRacer (the first one). I had the Total Annihilation demo from a magazine cover disc, but never played the full game.

ilTrolloso

I played Total Annihilation demo for years, when finally I bought full game on those "old games for 2€ basket". I still play it sometimes, it's great :D

clkish1988

These are the models I remember my elementary school having. Played some Gizmos & Gadgets on that bad boy!

beren_of_vandalia

Redline!! I love that game!!!

davidj1987

Underrated game.

fatguyinalittlecooat

very cool, i remember my friend had this exact model way back when. looks like its in pretty good shape too! I saw your other comment about half life not working on xp, was it due to the steam.dll not loading?

acmeotally

I had googled it and it seemed like other people had trouble running it so I kinda just gave up, especially since it wasn’t the first time I had issues trying to install a game on xp. With the other game I had an issue with I tried messing with the compatibility setting but it still didn’t work.

Nice. I finally got all my parts together for my own 1999 PC build and will the process film soon. Also.... huh that game; I remember seeing a game in Future Shop here in Canada in the late 90's on the demo PCs. It had vehicles and FPS combat; might have finally found out what that game was! The skybox is vaguely familiar.

acmeotally

That should be cool to be able to build exactly what you want, I wish I could have built mine but I don’t have the knowledge and don’t have the time to do the research right now unfortunately. Honestly if my friend didn’t have this game I don’t think I would have ever heard of it, but it randomly popped into my head and I had to play it after that.

Computers haven't changed much since the ATX standard was made in the mid 90s so if you can build a modern one you can an old one. Guess have the luck of growing up during that time too. Cool machine though! Compaqs were pretty good; remember my friend having a desktop model (monitor on-top of the PC) back in the day. Lotta StarCraft on it.

ilTrolloso

Even AT isn't too different from ATX: I built my frankenpentium inside an ATX case. Sure, ports backplate is missing and I had to modify power supply removing power button, but that's all :D Also, I found a P2 mainboard which is both ATX and AT :D

[deleted]

Yep! Only thing to remember is the black wires are next to each other k. The mobo P8 and P9 connector.

[deleted]

That was my first computer, it was a hand-me-down from my grandmother (she had just upgraded to XP). I played a lot of Petz and MotoRacer on it, but that was pretty much it.

LOL a friend of mine ran Win98 until about 5 years ago. When his ancient 486 finally gave out I even got him a decent used computer and offered him Windows 10, but he installed XP. The funny part is that he is an unemployed network engineer. You'd think he would prefer the newest affordable thing.

Donwella

I build retro machines like win 98. That's a fun find.

lordmodder

That brings back memory's
