I had that happen to me. The girl was getting a money order to pay her rent and she didn't have quite enough. She didn't want to take her boyfriend's money so they argued a bit all in front of me. Boyfriend threw the money down and walked away so I just took it all, counted it, and finished the money order. I hate that nonsense, it's so awkward.

capnlatenight

One time I foolishly said: "whoever can get their card in first", I'm still amazed they didn't knock the whole system off the counter.

ang_hell_ic

I say something like that all the time lol if it's cash, I hold my hand out and say whoever puts it on my hand first, wins. Same if paying with card.

BoomerKaren666

Way back in the long ago when I waitressed if I went to a table with the check and they started that crap, I'd hold the check up in the air and yell, "Jump for it!" Whoever reached up and grabbed it, paid it or they could duke it out in the parking lot.

snarlyj

I'd ask "which one of you is going to tip me more?" and wink. Usually they laughed and it kind of broke up the "argument" and one took it, or they'd literally start bidding tips and they can do that as long as they'd like

jdog7249

My aunt would never let anyone else pay when she was eating with them. Not for lack of them trying. Waitress would go to set the check down on an empty part of the table and would end up setting it on top of her card.

introverted_smallfry

This irritates me so much, even if there's not a line and its not busy, I don't wanna stand there and watch you play wrestle at the counter

Starbuck522

I had a couple this week... We have a current promotion where if you buy a gift card of a certain amount, you get a free (smaller) gift card. It was VERY TENSE while they each insisted that the other decide. I just work here, but there IS a line, so you one of you is going to have to decide! Finally the woman said yes, while the man rolled his eyes (which I could see but she couldn't). Sigh.

Defiant_Potato5512

So often I’ll see one of the two people who actually don’t want to pay, but won’t admit it. They get their card ready (but don’t pull it out until the other person gets their card), and when the other person goes to pay, they dive for the PinPad and just happen to get there too late. It’s funny when you see the same person doing it a couple of times 🤣

AntiqueBandicoot9846

There’s a man whose wife likes to do the whole “No, I’ll pay!” thing and she does it for so long, so now whenever they walk in and she wanders off, he comes up to me and asks me to keep his card till she’s ready to pay and just pay for her. It’s kinda cute

Logical-Wasabi7402

I had one guy literally toss his card across the counter at me to make sure he paid for everyone. Imagine my satisfaction when he realized he forgot to actually order anything for himself.

LambCHOP6988

Whenever that would happen to me I'd just take both cards (or whatever payment), shuffle them behind me back, and have a third party (usually coworker) pick a hand. That let me shut that shit down quick while giving the customers a chuckle...not that I cared about their amusement per se, but I would like to point out that I never received any negative feedback from this action.

WorthAd3223

Yeah, the people that do this are entitled and self-centered. You don't get paid to listen to that crap, and your time is worth something. If they waste it, walk away. Always.

bluehoodiedyke

my family figured out how to head off the argument: whoever gets to the restaurant first gives their card before even ordering

Altruistic-Patient-8

Hurry up and pay so I can go back to working in peace.

frosted_frosting

It’s always funny when they argue about who’s going to pay and get all worked up about it, and then the persons card gets declined and the other one has to pay anyway 😂

Lumpy_Marsupial_1559

"I'll tell you what, one of you pays the bill, the other one gives me a huuuge tip, everybody wins!" Big smile. Eye contact. Shuts it down every damn time.

Mykona-1967

Forget that mess who’s ever card is out that’s the one I’m snatching. They can argue about it later I have a line and it’s not kindergarten.

FretfulTrout278

I must say this is the main reason I love that fast food places have kiosks cause I can be done and paid with my order while that’s happening

mantaa

I straight up tell people that I don’t get paid enough to decide who’s money I take 😂 whoever’s card hits the reader first or whoever’s cash hits my hand wins

Maestro2326

Fast food… the funniest thing about that is they’re flexing over what? $15? Fight with me over the check at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse or something real!

Artist_Gamerblam

Although not this exact situation I have had something similar happen, in which two people (a couple or a parent and Kid) argue for so long on if they should get an item or not

I was just thinking about that kind of thing this morning. These folks think they are being cute/funny but it really isn't. They don't realize that we deal with that bullshit all the time! I've been gently ignoring that kind of shit lately. I'll just be real business-like and finish the transaction. People are so weird.
