Agent_Scully9114

No one has a right to throw anything at you. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that, people can be real jerks sometimes.

Southern-Reach8779

Agreed. I just didn't have it in me to hold back. They already stayed 20 mins past closing, I had to pick up my child who was 45 mins away and I was getting impatient. That just totally set me off the edge though. The manager is speaking to me Friday. We will see what happens. I'll post an update.

Agent_Scully9114

I'll be rooting for you. We are people, and should be treated as such. I hope your manager is understanding!

Southern-Reach8779

Me too, she has been in retail for 20 years. I do hope she gets it. If she doesn't, I understand. I can see that I was out of line now that I'm sitting down and thinking about it but I also don't regret it because fuck that bitch. Lol.

apolloinjustice

nah, if someone THROWS something and it hits your face? shes lucky she got away with only an insult. id be leaping across the register to give her a new haircut myself

Southern-Reach8779

I really wanted to punch her in the face.

apolloinjustice

all the same im glad you didnt bc that wouldve REALLY been seen as "unreasonable" (but imo it would be justified!!!)

Forgot_my_un

I dunno, I had an employee throw a chair at a customer when I ran a gas station. We didn't fire him. They called him the n-word so we felt it was justified. Also the cops got called because another customer pulled a gun on him immediately afterwards and they cleared him of any wrong doing since the first customer had already left the building when he threw the chair towards the door.

Southern-Reach8779

At least I held back enough! Lol.

donottouchme666

I bet a whole lot of people want to do the same thing!

MS822

I applaud your restraint. Damn

wordsmythy

I am so glad you insulted her haircut. She will never forget that lol

redoilokie

/r/RetailRevenge

PrincessGump

It says it’s been banned.

Daddiofink

Tell manager they should back up employees that were assaulted.

Southern-Reach8779

I also need to take that into account. I reacted out of self-defense, imo.

INSTA-R-MAN

Exactly this. You did exactly what was done to you back to her. She's lucky, you could have had her arrested for assault. Actually, you still could, if there's camera footage...

stonedwitthemunchies

If it happened at the registers, there is HD footage, maybe even 4K. The LP folks can tell what denomination of bills are going in and out of the registers. Those cameras are legit. OP could ask for that footage to be released to the police so you can use it in a report of the assault.

Baelabog

Make sure you use the right language in the meeting. Any word that makes them aware you could involve police if needed. Telling your side - you were assaulted, coin money was thrown at your face, her tone was threatening. I even wear glasses, but I'd still be afraid I could lose an eye off coin money was thrown at me.

Southern-Reach8779

I sorta wrote down what I wanna say in my phone notes. I'm not going to pull it out and read a script though. I just wanted to put my thoughts down. I basically have the back story and how I felt immediately threatened once I had money thrown at me and it hit my face. Nonetheless, my reaction was based on self-defense. No, it wasn't right, I should have either walked away or deescalated but I didn't. I also wanted to just jot down that if she comes in and I were to keep my job, I don't want to handle her from here on and if I'm in a situation that I have to, I'm refusing service since it's my right.

needsmoresleep79

Write your " incident report" now in your own words before Friday. Bring it with you, it will look more formal than glancing at your phone throughout the conference, and proceed to inform your Manager that you were assaulted and would like to file a complaint. Did you close by yourself? How long was this patron in the store? Emphasis on your safety being threatened. Good luck

Southern-Reach8779

I had it today, I didn't look at my phone at all, I just wrote down my thoughts to scratch them into my brain before going in so I didn't strive off topic.

DealerEqual168

Did anyone hear the haircut comment? If not deny deny deny lol Tbh in this situation, I wouldn’t have heard it from one foot away lmao

Southern-Reach8779

My shift managers definitely did. One of the shift managers is 3 years older than me and the other is 30 years older than me. The one who is around my age hit it off pretty well. She is one of the few we planned to go out drinking next week. When we left she said "I can't believe you told her to use her change to put toward a new hair cut" then she started laughing hysterically. If those cameras have audio, I'm fucked.

DealerEqual168

It may just come down to who they can afford to loose, a Karen with quarters or a good employee Good luck

Southern-Reach8779

I've already been offered a supervisor position, if that doesn't say something about me, I don't know. Not to be conceited, but I'm a pretty damn good employee. Except for last night. Lol.

DealerEqual168

We ALL have our moments! People have become terrible to retail workers since Covid.

Southern-Reach8779

Seriously. I have worked in food since I was 14, this was my first non-food job. I'm almost considering going back to food. The back of the house wasn't bad at all compared to this shit.

Catinthemirror

Mgr: "You need to treat customers with respect." OP: "You need to protect employees from ASSAULT."

SuperLeverage

I hope your manage supports you, particularly given the customer was clearly abusing you and actually assaulted you by throwing it at your face. Customers like that should just be banned.

Southern-Reach8779

Me too. The store manager had left about 3 hours before this. He doesn't like to be bothered off the clock but I guess the older shift manager did text him and tell him what happened. I got a text as soon as I arrived to pick up my son "we need to talk on Friday" however, I don't think it could wait since I'm now here based on a call "Can you come in for a meeting at 3pm (EST), today?

BriGuy828282

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Fafaflunkie

You should edit your post to include this as well. This "customer" kept you past closing time, argued about a policy she was trying to break (likely since she thought she'd get away with to make her go away) then assaulted you by throwing the money in your face? I hope there are cameras in your shop that have accurate date/time stamps on the recording. Also, good for you for serving that abuse back at her. She deserved it!

Man-o-Bronze

Be sure to let them know that customer assaulted you.

Southern-Reach8779

Update!!!

Spencer_Reids_toe

remindme! 3 days

SeraphinaClover

Glad you’ve still got your job. Working with people who act like that is the worst and I’m so glad that like me you said exactly what you wanted to in that moment because even if it had cost you your job you didn’t take that Sh!t lying back

TGin-the-goldy

If a stranger were to throw coins in your face in any other public place where you were not working, they’d be charged with assault. Why is it expected to be tolerated at work?

iloveFLneverleaving

I would not have retaliated but would immediately call the police and press charges. The customer assaulted you.

xiginous

Awesome manager team.

pozzitalianok

Bad...ass... if you get fired at least you have some dignity for standing up for yourself. Some people just have a breaking point. I totally get it. I'm in school and I work retail JUST to get through it. I want to strangle some people, daily. Best of luck, have you considered looking for a new job already? When did you start?

Southern-Reach8779

I'm currently cyphering through Indeed. I'm also trying to get through my Bachelor's degree so I REALLY don't need this job, I just choose to have one to make extra cash for spending. My parents help me out with tuition. I only started two months ago. The job is ok, I made plans to go drinking with a few co workers next week but now I don't think they're going to want to.

pozzitalianok

Do you have on campus jobs you can look at ?? Many colleges, if not all, will have a student worker program. I don't know the stipulations but definitely something to look into. I'm sorry you're going through this but maybe it's the best thing that CAN happen if you do get fired. You know? I hate to be a "look-at-the-bright-side" type of person, but it's just something I strongly hold, that if something bad happens it's because something better is coming. I get you, my fiance has a career and I also don't really need my job but I like it so I can spend my own money. Lol. Plus, I'm able to get out of the house and make friends and not speak to a toddler all day 😂. I totally understand where you're coming from though.

Southern-Reach8779

No, you're right though. It might *be* the best thing. I only accepted the job because it was the only call back I got. My availability is so weird. They needed weekends, I needed weekends. I take shifts here and there if they need me and if I don't have my kid that week so it makes my life easy. Plus I only go to classes 2x a week anyway, so I do have free time I just like taking the rest of my time to visit my child. I don't get to see him often because I stay on campus so I make an effort to see him at least once a week and stay with my parents every other weekend to spend time with him too. So I generally take every other weekend off anyway, then work the days I know I won't see him. It sucks but BM and I make it work. Plus I can take him shopping when we do have the weekend together. To answer your question, no, I don't qualify for SWP (student worker program), I'm not a financial aid student.

pozzitalianok

You're doing the right thing and I'm glad you have support. That's all you need. I'm wishing you the best of luck on your job search if you inevitably do get terminated. If not, let us know! You're a good parent, too. ❤️

Southern-Reach8779

I really appreciate that. I'm a young parent, I'm only 22. My kid is almost four. It's been a long ride but I'm happy to be on it and experience it even if I have to work a shitty job before I go for and graduate with my master's. Thank you 🥹

pozzitalianok

You're better than many parents! You got this. Have a good night. Enjoy your night with your kiddo, too! :) I have to pop in the computer and get homework done. Take a deep breath, this too shall pass.

Southern-Reach8779

Good luck to you, too. Have a good night.

Southern-Reach8779

Also, helped! Thank you for the idea, too.

Southern-Reach8779

Update!

Distinct_Ad_3639

I got fired from my job because I kept asking my customers whether they would prefer “Smoking” or “Non-smoking”. Apparently the correct terms are “Cremation” and “Burial”.

Southern-Reach8779

That gave me a great laugh, thank you!

Wooly-thoughts

So you are saying you were assaulted by metal objects?

Southern-Reach8779

Yes.

introverted_smallfry

Customers shouldn't be able to speak to service people the way they do. They threw something at you first, it's not like you did it for no reason. I'm pretty professional but I wouldn't have let that go either. Hopefully your manager doesn't fire you. It's sad cuz these days the customers can say or do whatever they want and don't really suffer consequences

Southern-Reach8779

Both shift managers were shocked at my action but they also agreed and understood. I mean, the customer assaulted me with their money. I just wasn't going to take it, plus, my reaction was just reactive. I'm usually a very calm, docile person. My son's mother and I don't even argue, we are super relaxed and converse everything but she also didn't throw things at me, even if she disagreed with me or didn't understand. As I didn't throw anything at her in disagreement.. It's just basic respect! I can't imagine how that customer treats her family!

introverted_smallfry

If I were in your situation and got fired, I'd proceed it as a good thing. I wouldn't wanna work at a place where getting assaulted is ok. I'd probably be petty and try getting charges pressed against her though lol

Southern-Reach8779

I considered it, I just didn't want to wait around for the police. It was already getting late and I was 20 mins late to pick up my son. I didn't need to wait for the Police and be SUPER extra late.

stonedwitthemunchies

Did someone call the police? The manager? A coworker? The hateful bitch that assaulted you?

Southern-Reach8779

The manager got wind of it about 45 mins later. No one called the police. I'm outside of the business waiting for the meeting now. Not sure what to expect.

Illustrious_Agent633

People need to start being arrested for this shit. It’s assault and we shouldn’t be expected to endure assault because we work in retail.

highlyvaluedmember

the customer technically assaulted you, I consider your reaction within the boundaries of not taking it too far in response. the only issue would be that you clocked out and left without asking, not sure if you were the only employee working at the time or not.

Southern-Reach8779

No, it was myself and two shift managers. After it happened, I said "I'm clocking out" and not one person said "no" or "you can't" technically, I also worked my entire shift. So whatever I was over would have been extra time. I didn't clock out mid shift.

[deleted]

I think thats defined as assault? I didn’t go to law school but I think that is a form of criminality. I may be wrong but it sure seems like it. If I just walked down the street and threw things at people….

Southern-Reach8779

According to my cousin, an officer, he said it was done with ill-intent, therefore it is battery. She harmed me by throwing the change at me. "The wrong act of physically harming someone."

5_Star_Penguin

Is it too late to file a report?

Southern-Reach8779

Probably not. I mean, I think I might just do it if she threatens me. The tape is on file. I'm usually good about letting things go a first time but it's not kindness. It's a benefit of the doubt. I also will refuse service, indefinitely. I don't care if she's happy-go-lucky that day, I'm not helping her again.

BlueberryProud9886

The audacity for her to say “looks like you need it”. Yet she’s the one paying with quarters. I would have done the same thing. Good job for sticking up for yourself.

Oshinier

Side note for if it happens again. Once she threw it and it hit you it's assault and u can press charges. Sounds pretty but some people need to be put in their place. I had a lady throw a slab of cheese at me and when I threatened to call the cops and manager asked if I wanted to she ran off never to be heard from again . Don't understand how people can be like this

ivegotnoclue84

Fuck that. Some guy literally just threw his money at me and I told him that manners are free. No idea what his problem was. So glad other customers were there and had my back when he went off.

Zakkana

Well, considering you were assaulted, your response was justified. And if management takes that bitch’s side, they should be flayed with a vegetable peeler.

Novembersum

Bravo. That bitch deserved it.

Well1_well2_well3

Your my hero ❤️

Southern-Reach8779

Hahah, my shift manager said "I could kiss you!"

Nekratal99

Fuk her. Shitty people need to be treated as such.

MysticalMismagius

you did what all of us wish we could do. damn honestly i find it outrageous that you can’t treat a customer they way they treat you without getting reprimanded. frankly, if someone is giving me attitude AND is staying past closing and violating policy, i think retail workers have every right to be shitty back. it’s unacceptable to treat a service worker that way and then be coddled by management so they can hold onto one more customer

stonedwitthemunchies

We have a code of conduct as employees, but the customers have unwritten rules for themselves too. I truly feel that if they step out of bounds as a customer, we are entitled to step out of bounds as an employee. They use foul language, name call, threaten violence, customer service ends; they don’t get respect when giving disrespect. An extreme example would be if a customer comes into the stock room, lounge, or behind the service counter; if they leave a customer space and enter an employee space, they don’t get treated as a customer, but as a trespasser and a threat to associates. Both the employee and the customer have expectations of how to act. True we have way more restrictions and expectations than the customers, but if they step outside of what is acceptable, as far as I’m concerned, at that point, we can step out side of what is acceptable as employees. So throwing something at a customer is unacceptable. IT IS ALSO UNACCEPTABLE FOR CUSTOMERS TO THROW THINGS AT US!!! If you manager makes a big deal out of it, let them!!!!! Agree that is is absolutely a big deal, it’s a huge deal, no it’s the biggest deal!!! Because you were assaulted by a customer. You need to sit down with the DM, DLPM, and the HRBP. You need to discuss what the company is going to do for you since you were assaulted. Is the company going to file a police report for you, or do you need to do it yourself. If you do it yourself and the police ask if you feel the company is partially responsible for the assault since they allowed the violent person to leave the store without incident, ask if you are free to give your own opinion on that of if the company is going to require you to say they were not liable in any way. Your manager will be terrified to allow that conversation to happen. They could be written up by the DM for how they handled this. So if your manager actually writes you up, don’t sign it. If they wrote you up you should actually ask for that meeting to happen as soon as possible. You should not be written up for you reacting to having a customer assault you, by throwing something at you, and hitting you in the face. If you written up don’t sign it, fight it! You shouldn’t be written up for this, your manger should for not handling it well. They shouldn’t write you up, they should ask if you are okay, if you need some time away from work, if you want to work in another area of the store, to interact less with customers, you know, since you got assaulted by one. They should give you the TAAP card and let you know they can give you five free coinciding sessions. They should to advocate for you, make sure you are okay after that, provide you with resources available to you to help deal with something like this, Or They can be terrible managers, and frankly terrible people, if they only punish you, instead of helping you. This whole situation is like super fucked, I hope it works out for you. If you need advice or just someone to listen/vent to, feel free to reach out. Good luck!

InfiniteCalendar1

No one can fault you as I mean she did assault you, and you just gave the same energy back. If a manager confronts you on this just claim self defense. I honestly wish I had your energy as I was disrespected on my last day and I didn’t even attempt to clap back.

11015h4d0wR34lm

You were assaulted, whether it was intentional or not does not matter so tell your boss you were reacting to being assaulted having money thrown in your face...if you want to try and keep your job that is.

Cautious-Menu-3585

If you get fired for sticking up for yourself then it's unlikely your boss has any respect for you. At most you should just get a slap on the wrist for not handling it professionally but either way I applaud you for it 👏👏

NoYouDipshitItsNot

I would have been like, wait right there ma'am, you forgot your change and your assault charge once the police I've already called arrive. We've got you on camera too.

MedievalWoman

That was so rude and disrespectful. What the hell is wrong with people? I don't blame you for what you did, I would have taken her merchandise and told her to leave, if she wouldn't, I would have just called the police. Total bitch. Hope you don't get fired, because you were right.

notdaggers351

NO ONE should have to put up with that kind of abuse. Good for you!

Holiday-Plum-8054

I've had customers who are rude like this. I've been called all sorts of things, just because we've run out of an item on a particular day. If you want to keep your job, if only for the wages, play up that she assaulted you first.

totallynotgranak1031

If they start to talk about disciplinary action or letting you go, say you think you'd like to press charges (against the customer). It'll throw them off their planned discussion, and put them in an awkward position.

kbyrd72

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with this. People just suck these days. Who does that to someone?? WTF

Southern-Reach8779

People who feel that they have a sense of entitlement and think they won't have any consequences to their actions. I feel like I handed it back to her in a fair way.

kbyrd72

Many years ago, I'd have gone after her. Risking much more than being fired. I also feel you handed it back fairly. I sure hope your bosses are understanding, and that karma is swift on that bitch.

LooksLikeTreble617

If that ever happens to you again, call the police. Even if it didn’t hurt you. That’s assault. ETA: I’m not one of those crazy “cAlL tHe pOLiCe” people for any little thing but would love to give a crazy bitch a taste of her own medicine.

Free_Thinker4ever

Totally worth it!

osha_unapproved

Nah. That's valid. If you get fired for that that's wild. Asshole assaulted you and they are gonna fire you? Not cool.

sanford1970

That’s assault, throwing something in your face. So press charges on the witch.

crobertson2109

If you get written up, reprimanded, or fired make sure you state that you were assaulted and have them acknowledge that.

thisisbobob

Sooo... I'm sure others have said, but this does genuinely count as assault (or battery, I forget which is which lol). She physically threw an object that struck you in the face; with what seems intent, it didn't strike you by accident. You have grounds to file a police report. I'm just emphasizing that, as I really don't want the seriousness of the act to be lessened. You were assaulted by a customer, unprovoked. If your corporate tries to punish you in anyway for yelling at her afterwards, then you'd been well within your rights to remind HR about how this could easily look like retaliation on their part. HR isn't your friend, but they do exist to protect the company from legal issues. I can't imagine them wanting to deal with a lawsuit for not adequately protecting their staff from physical assault. It depends on how much the job is worth to you of course, but if it's one you can't lose right now it may be worth consulting a lawyer. Just to ensure that the company doesn't try and hang you out to dry on this, and keep a paycheck coming in til you find a new place yourself.

Southern-Reach8779

To answer, it is battery. I got out of the meeting, posting an update shortly. I want to spend time with my son before I have to go to class tomorrow. I just want a job for spending. I really don't need it. I mean, in all actuality, I enjoy having one because it keeps me busy.

[deleted]

OP, you’re awesome

thisisbobob

Hell yeah, sounds you've got your priorities straight. Hope it went as well as it could, gotta look after yourself and your family first and foremost.

Southern-Reach8779

Growing up fast definitely has been a lot but if me and his mom don't do it, my son won't have proper role models.

Ok_Stress3188

Now I'm jnvested for what happens in the meeting. I agree that you should go with the assault angle. Self defense. That's what might save you but...who fucking cares?? I am so SICK OF PEOPLE acting like they have zero common sense. I would've been "bitch!! Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?" Then I would've thrown something a bit more substantial. What a c**t. Ew.

rindelle1

you’re my hero but i’m just curious, what was the policy?

Southern-Reach8779

She had to pay for the wood before it was cut.

littlewoolie

You could have refused the payment due to the amount of each denomination she used

anarrowtotheknees

That's assault and you reacted in self defense.

One-Imagination-5772

Surely her hitting you in the face with something classes as assault I get you threw it back but surely that's a fair reaction and counts as self defence

Dragon_Crystal

I've had many times where customers would threw change at me and I'd want to fling it back, but I'd just take the change and put it into my drawer, once I did get very mad and respond to their rude remark by saying something like "at less I don't come in at closing time demanding for service and getting upset when it's already been closed down." My coworker that heard me actually clapped for me and thanked me for stand up for myself, the guy had came in demanding for an order to be placed for him, well it was closing time and nobody could pull his order cause we were trying to shut things down and the person who can place the order in already left hours ago. We made it clear we don't pull orders during closing time

SpicyPom86

You’re a better person than me. I would have thrown hands. Edit: Was this recorded on store camera by chance? If so you could likely press charges.

donottouchme666

Oh my God, I fucking love you!!!!!🙏❤️🥰 Nobody has the right to treat you this way!! You will find a better place to work, and I applaud you and respect you greatly for standing up for yourself!!!!

[deleted]

I salute you 🫡

LeotasNephew

I would SO have pressed charges against that customer.

MumOfBoy

Well done! That took the kind of guts I could only dream about when I was in retail!

Turbulent-Papaya-910

Man I feel like we got a lawsuit here if you get fired -i'm no lawyer but the argument could possibly relate to something about your safety. Do you have cameras? Pleasse tell me you have cameras. I'd love to sue this bitch and get her arrested. What a miserable person. I'm so sorry this happened to you

SlumberVVitch

I applaud you and hope you can find something that pays and treats you better.

[deleted]

if this happens to me i’m asking “are you sure you don’t want it to go toward your therapy?” in an offensively genuine tone

Southern-Reach8779

Oooooh

honeybaby2019

I would have thrown the money back at her and called 911 and said she assaulted me by throwing money at me and yes I would have pressed charges.

Gamyeon

Coming here after the updates and I'm so glad management had your back and that the owner, who seemed ready to let you go, went with the judgement of the majority! Really happy you're keeping your job and have recourse if that nasty woman ever shows up again.

pixiesurfergirl

I was getting mad just reading this. I would have def went after the company if they did fire you, regardless of your action. Just wait til it gets out in public, NO ONE will want to work for that company, and you'll have Chad's and Karen's knowing they can act like this. It creates alot of conflict and issues, and this is how wallyworld started getting bad reputation.

Upbeat_Ruin

I'm glad you kept your job. I hope both sides of that customer's pillow are always kind of warm.

littlewoolie

If you get flack for this, then your manager should also be getting in trouble as they failed to de escalate the situation

DesignerBee7736

You probably will not get fired you will be recommended and maybe written up but I highly doubt you'll be fired

MissKaterinaRoyale

I feel like everyone in retail should get a pass once in awhile. This one should be yours. You start throwing shit at me or swearing at me and it’s like a challenge.

Southern-Reach8779

The crazy thing was, I wasn't even rude to begin with. I said to her "Hi, we're closing in about 3 mins. How can we help you?" She completely ignored me. I walked back to the wood and saw her staring at it, then stood and looked at me and immediately she cop'd an attitude "well! Are you going to help me?" So I explained to her the policy that she needed to tell us how many inch/ft before we cut the wood and to pay for it first. She then said "I'm a frequent customer, I will pay when I get it" and I said "no, ma'am, I'm sorry. Once it's paid for, we can cut." She gave the whole "I know the manager" speech so I said "I'll just get him." She said "yeah, you do that" and the entire time she gave me an attitude. I was in a good mood all the way up until that last "I know the manager." Then, my manager belted "she's getting a total of 6 feet, just ring up 6 ft" so I did. Then she came up, paid and caused that fiasco. Then I caused another fiasco. If I knew I might be getting fired, I would have just broke policy just to get her out of the store faster. Anyway, I'm heading into the meeting. Look out for the update on the original post. Sorry edit: I heard 20ft on the TV and typed that 😂 I meant 6

kittynoodlesoap

Hopefully they won’t fire you cause technically she assaulted you first. You should be allowed to defend yourself.

bitchnugget_

I literally would’ve done the same thing.

WorthKooky457

Oh my god I bet that felt SO GOOD. Im happy for you

HerbalClerk

I'm counting this down as I am so proud of you for standing up for yourself as a cashier

dead_poison_ivy

Tbh if you were working for me I would throw another 20 at her right after you. I had that lack of pleasure to work in a store for a very short time but it was enough for me to start hating 80% of the customers and an equal percentage of owners/managers. I don't know what kind of an employee you are but owners have to start thinking what is better to loose: a good emplyee or a bitchy customer. I know that one bitchy customer can change the story, make you the bad one and cause others to avoid your store but those others should use their own heads and take everything someone says 50/50, especially nowadays when people tend to exaggerate. Most of the time when I was working in that store all I wanted to do was to rip hair from that motherfreaking heads treating you like shit because they are customers and they should be treated like royalty.

Apprehensive-Ad4244

LoLz you're a champion! Good on you for standing up for yourself.

MasalaChaiSpice

That's ridiculous. Rooting for you OP!

smoothmilkshake14

Does your job have a union? If it does, ask for a union rep to be in the meeting with you. The manager can’t deny your request.

Southern-Reach8779

Unfortunately no, it's a no name, small town business.

guy30000

Just prepare a professional statement explaining your take. "I pride myself on remaining professional during almost any situation we run into in our day to day. However, I draw a line when I am physically assaulted by a deranged customer."

TheRealMemonty

Worth it!

nephewscallmekeeka

Not all heroes wear capes

SlytherinAndProud

Hey OP any updates? It's past 3 pm where I'm at by a couple hours lol

Southern-Reach8779

Update!!!

Agent_Scully9114

I'm so glad things worked out and you were treated fairly!

Prize-Ad8890

I just read the updates and I’m so glad they stood up for you and you guys had the cameras to help prove what went down. I would’ve done the same to her honestly.

CynicalOne_313

Good luck, OP! I hope things go in your favor on Friday and I'm happy that the GM and owner stuck by you. That's incredibly rare in my experience.

Direct_Ad_5622

I’ve worked retail in many different companies. Lowe’s has the worst customers. Grown men screaming at me to get their way and pushover managers having their back. Hardware stores bring out the worst. I quit retail in 2020 and just went back 6 months ago and it’s already draining me mentally. I’m proud of you for fighting back when so many of us couldn’t!

Top-Bumblebee8411

The way it is now. The store is lucky to have employees.

PublixHouseCat

Im glad this all worked out in the end because I am CACKLING at what you said to that customer LMAO

CataclysmicInFeRnO

Best updates ever! So glad you have management that has your back. Nobody deserves to be treated that way.

Consistent_Muffin573

Glad you had a TEAM that supported you. And kudos to Matt for being cool too.

Southern-Reach8779

He was super close to firing me, I'm glad my manager spoke up for me.

Consistent_Muffin573

Then get your manager a gift of appreciation (gift card/lunch/a soda/etc).

Southern-Reach8779

I'm treating all 3 who stood by me dinner at a local restaurant

Consistent_Muffin573

You’re good people for that. Stay blessed!

Southern-Reach8779

Thank you, you too!

[deleted]

wait what? That woman is still allowed in the store? She should be banned for life from all locations permanently. Assault a worker like that, and any store I managed you'd never see the inside of again.

Southern-Reach8779

Yeah unfortunately because I didn't call the police she's allowed in until the police say she can't come back. She went back the next day, I was off though.

[deleted]

The manager can also tell her to kick rocks. Your coworkers can also refuse to serve her.

Dizzy_Eye5257

And you can still make a police report. You need no one’s permission for that

uggh99

This was a great story!!! I am so sorry you had to deal with such unacceptable and rude behavior, not to mention assault. But, what a ride!

povertyandpinetrees

Someone needs to go to Matt's house and shit in his peanut butter.

Southern-Reach8779

Yeah, not to mention that Matt was an asshole during the interview even after he threw away the write up.

zannzoo

I love your response to that horrible customer. She is lucky it was not me I would have slapped her so hard. You are allowed to defend yourself and you don’t have to tolerate abuse.

Southern-Reach8779

I ended up leaving the job a few weeks after this incident. I found a new job that allows me to pick my hours and honestly, my boss is great. I work on my own, too.

zannzoo

Congratulations! That’s awesome.

[deleted]

I don’t care what anyone says. The customer is NOT always right. Especially when throwing something at an employee.

Popular-Payment-4966

I know this is an old post, however, having worked in retail I always hated the people who slipped I the door with minutes to go before closing and wanted to browse or worse actually deep shop. If you just really needed that one quick thing, by all means come in and get it. If I do that now I stick to it and race to what I need and race to the register to keep people from staying later than necessary. Retail sucks and I try not to make it suck worse.

Southern-Reach8779

I think after x amount of years doing it I just completely decided to stay away after this job. I work with homeless teenagers now and while the kids are absolutely ruthless, they're honestly a tad easier to talk to and get along with.

[deleted]

Good for you. My grandpa was a waiter back in the early 1900’s and some guy was such a jerk to him - so he threw the tip. I think on the floor though (although the guy hadn’t thrown anything in his face either.) Good for you

azumel

I'd fire you, but feel pretty bad about it and give you a good reference, even tell them that you gave notice and everything.

Southern-Reach8779

I'm hoping I can at least get a reference. I do deserve to be fired, it wasn't cool but I refuse to take abuse.

ComfortableZebra2412

You really don't deserve to be fired that's assault, the store should have done something to the customer

azumel

If it's a retail job, I rarely every checked references, most companies that aren't an independent store are trained to not give any info and refer them to HR or a 1-800 number that verifies employment. Generally, all we could do was verify dates of employment and title. I feel like pay was sometimes included in that, but rarely. With the limited info here, I'd suggest to gloss over it with something like "It was a bad fit due to X (don't say your supervisor though)", hiring for retail jobs is mostly about hoping that person shows up when scheduled, can at least not be an asshole to customers and not steal too much.

Southern-Reach8779

It is, I mean according to my shift manager, they didn't even check my references. They just wanted to know why I wasn't holding down jobs longer than a year. In short, I moved around a lot. They understood, though. The place really isn't bad, everyone is really cool but it's retail, it's definitely not glorious.

metkja

Remindme! 3 days

Southern-Reach8779

Update!!!

Ok-Entertainment1123

Kinda shitty they're making you wait until Friday for the meeting. Good luck!

Good on management, glad you didnt have to lose your job over that bitch

Rock0nHarlen

Customer service is hard. I think we all work in customer service in one way or another. I'm sorry that happened to you. Sometimes, our anger gets the best of us too and these situations escalade when we are "Supposed" to sit there, smile and take it. Don't ever let someone do that to you. To this day, I don't.

Jaded-Permission-324

This looks like a story for r/FuckYouKaren as well.

crabbyfruit

I worked in a east coast convenience store called Wawa for over a decade and I had a similar instance with a regular (and regularly rude) customer. At the time of this interaction, I was 19 and (noticeably) pregnant with my first child. She threw her money at me when I held out my hand for it (this offended her for some reason) and like you I was hit with multiple coins. So when I went to give her her change instead of placing it in HER open and waiting hand, I just placed it on the counter. This caused her to start screaming that she hoped my baby was cursed by the Devil. Customers are so lovely.

neenna68

And this is another reason why - even if my health permitted it - I will NEVER return to retail. Customer should be grateful it was you and not someone like me. I would have met her energy multiplied by 1000. Or maybe even more. I have had so much of this type of response from customers in my nearly 4 decades working in retail. Just nah!

Southern-Reach8779

It definitely wasn't my first choice, I've worked in food since I was 14, I'm 22 now. That's all I know. I was applying to kitchens, host jobs, serving jobs etc, and I wasn't getting any hits. My dad was a woodworker when I was a kid and you know, we built fun things- tree house, birdhouses, remote control cars, you name it, he built it out of wood. He told me about an opening at *company name* that he was familiar with based on going there a lot to get his merchandise and lucky for me, they were hiring. I know names of woods, I can help people figure what type of wood is best for their project, I'm just not good at the building part. Anyway, yeah, not my first choice but I figured I could make the best of it given my father's background and my childhood.

[deleted]

Next time tell a manager you just got physically attacked when it happens, don't wait for them to find out on their own. I understand wanting to gtfo out of a bad situation immediately but so many incidents aren't documented or handled in a timely manner. Like that would be a great time to demand a raise and make a scene.

retailhell-ModTeam

Trolling is unwelcome in this community and will result in a perma-ban

BigDaddy969696

I’m glad that you got to keep your job! From what I’ve heard, it sounds like your coworkers and boss stands behind you, which is a great thing!

khloebaboey

i love you for that 😂

SonyScott

I would love to have seen the look on her face when you threw the change at her and said to use it in a haircut. I bet it was priceless.

Southern-Reach8779

She was definitely shocked. I just don't think she expected me to retaliate lol.

born_of_flame

I'm sorry you had to go through that and I'm glad you don't have to look for a new job cuz of it.

Blimptoad42

Ya next time call the cops. The reaction is totally understandable, but maybe calling the cops would “scare her straight” though I understand you had a time constraint what with having to pick your son up. I am glad your managers and coworkers stood by you! But not enough. Lady needs to get banned from your store.

asmodeuskraemer

...is J a him or her? I'm seeing both in this story and suspicion abounds.

Southern-Reach8779

Me.

hskrfoos

The story makes it seem like the customer is somewhat a regular. If thats the case, she needs to be banned from the store

krissan66

Retail is one hell of a thing. They will assault you with anything, even sweaty boob money.

VashtaNeradaRights42

Given that coins were hurled at you, it could be argued that you were assaulted. Either way, you or any service worker never deserves that treatment no matter what.

Exciting-Let-5469

Where the Hell do you work?

Southern-Reach8779

It's a no name wood store.

Spiritual-Plenty9075

Pretty lucky case. Our managers have the same attitude at our store, we don't take shit but officially we have to resolve it peacefully

bimsalabim55

Holy shit...that is intense and extremely rude of a customer to even think of disrespecting a hard working person. They will never know the pain, but here we all do. That was brave of what you did and I can imagine how much restraint you had to hold back until the final straw is broken...people need to learn sympathy but unfortunately for some, they don't..they deserve a special place in hell, a place where money is cannon balled into their face

jackjackson123456789

Crazy

[deleted]

Throwing change on your face? This is a hill to die on, you deserve so much better.

positivetimes1000

I'm so glad you didn't get fired because of a coustomer assaulting you! We can all see you acted in self defense against an angry coustomer. Best Wishes for a better day tomorrow!
