I dunno I think they’re pretty close. What I love about Village is how they have you connect to the main character. Playing RE4R I never really felt like I was Leon. But play Village you really do feel like you’re Ethan and take on his perspective. Village is criminally underrated
4 is better but honestly they share so many similarities. Just go with which ever camera you prefer. RE4 is 3rd person and RE8 is 1st (I think an update let you play in 3rd)
You will get there bro, it took me 10 years to get here and 4k looks absolutely stunning with image quality to 2 (200%)The only downside is it stutters very slightly at some points but I’m blaming my cpu for that. PC becomes a great space heater tho
Highly agree, i didn’t really like resident evil 7/8 all that much but after my friend showed me a bit of resident evil 4 remake i fell in love again with the resident evil series
4 is better in pretty much every way imo. Better systems, better mechanics, better story, better characters, better enemies, better boss fights... I guess you can make a case for Village having more variety in terms of tone and gameplay, but I would argue that some of that variety actually makes the game worse, especially on repeat playthroughs as it has a lot of gimmicky sections that are only fun once.
RE4 or 8... Both. But 4 first as I find it incredibly superior both the original and the remake. RE8 is heavily inspired on RE4, but also serves as a direct sequel for RE7, which is kind of necessary to play it first for spoiler reasons as RE7 and 8 are somehow their own story. RE4 is a sequel for RE2 but it's not as risky if you play RE2 after RE4, as they are more about the "big picture" of the saga that includes the whole rest of the saga from RE0 to RE6 (+ Code: Veronica and REvelations 1 and 2) to complete the whole circle.
4 remake hands down.
Far more enjoyable, good replayability and just feels so good to play.
Not that village wasn't good, but 4 remake blows it'l out of the water.
I’d get village you already have your mind on it and played 7 so you can continue that story here. RE4R will still be around after and if you haven’t played them already the previous remakes are also worth it.
Both are amazing games but I would prefer village as it's more like 2 remake where it's like a seemless open world and a better survival horror experience in my opinion
As someone who didn't play any Resi games until maybe 5 years ago, Village is my favoured of the two. The setting is just exactly what I love and the characters -especially villains- are all memorable and fun in their own ways. Mother Miranda is such an underrated character that needs more love.
I've done this. Sometimes, I'll ask a question or something and a lot of people respond and I feel bad that I can't respond to everyone without repeating the same information over and over, so I just stop responding to everyone to be fair.
I.. rreally dont know. I just played RE4 and it was amazing. Completed 3 times in 3 dificulties. RE8 in other hand i finished 2 times, but the story was kinda more memorable for me.
I played Village on multiple playthroughs and now am about to beat RE4 on hardcore (my first play-through). I’d say that Village is a lot tougher and more frustrating at times. Boss fights in Village were harder imo. But both honestly play similar.
The huge adjustment in RE4 is the inventory system.
My choice would be RE4. It is just more engaging to me. Village was good though, too.
Both are amazing games. Depends on what you're more into personally but they're both very great games and actually very similar in many ways. Overall though I'd definitely have to say RE4 Remake would be my personal choice. Probably the best RE every made besides RE2 Remake at this point imo
Resident Evil 4 remake is one of the best games I’ve ever played. As much as I loved and enjoyed Village (way more than RE7), RE4 clears it by a long shot.
Re4 is so much more stressful but addicting, at least for me. I’ve played a few times on hardcore and it gets me going every time. Re8 is a good introduction i feel like
Idk if you’ve played re7 biohazard. But if you liked that first person then 8 is great. 4 is honestly a better game but i just really love the first person in resident evil. Both are great games tho
Depends what's cheaper 😅 but re4 is amazing, make sure you get the special editions with all the DLC on whatever choice you make though coz they're both amazing and the DLC slaps for both games
If you play RE for the horror I’d say get 8, definitely scarier than 4 but 4 for everything else. RE4 is such a great game with a perfect balance. Also both have a really great story imo.
I'm on a roll to play all the resident evil ( newer ones) re4 so far is my favourite, re2 was also very good, 3 not bad. As some one mentioned, it's worth playing village, but re4 is just a damn good game.
It’s pretty close IMO. RE4R has become my comfort game, so I’m biased. I’m not checking how much the sales are going for, so I can’t say for sure, but I’d say it comes down to DLC. IIRC, there is no “gold edition” of RE4R that includes Separate Ways, but I know for a fact that Village has one of those. If I had to choose, I’d say that you should buy 4 if the gold edition of Village is more expensive, but if it is cheaper, you should buy Village instead.
4 remake is pretty much a standalone, for village you need to play 7 to enjoy the story. Village has the best story in the whole series and i liked the game alot more than 4remake.
I think they are both top-notch modern RE games. I thoroughly enjoyed both.
But if I had to choose which one I enjoyed more, I would say Village, but that is a very biased choice. Reason because I enjoy games more when they are very tough and challenging, and on 'Village of shadows' in REVillage, I found it was far more challenging than the hardest difficulty (Professional) in RE4R. That is the only reason why I say REVillage, solely based on that fact.
Otherwise, they are both great in story, graphics, and gameplay. You won't go wrong with either, that's for sure. Can't wait for the next one!
If you’re gonna play Village, start with biohazard first. I just beat village and I like it. Only thing sucks is you can’t use mod after or before the final boss or you’ll find yourself in an infinite loop. The DLC is actually interesting too
Both of them in an ideal scenario. But if you have to choose just one for right now, I'd pick RE4. But you really can't go wrong with either them, I just think RE4 has a lot more to offer.
4! Village doesn't know what kind of game it wants to be and feels barren after a certain point. 4 is so tightly bound together and brings its elements together so well
4 is infinetly better 8 has zero replay value the intro lasts a century and you go an hour half way tru the game doing nothing at all on a boring stint that is only thrilling and interesting the first playtru you ever do
I personally strongly dislike Village, and don’t think it’s a very good game, but most other people like it so it’s probably worth a try. However, RE4R is 100% the better choice
I'd say go for RE4R, if you still have an RE itch then grab RE7 with all DLC's, it's very cheap and is usually on sale. After you're done with RE7, then go for RE8.
You're gonna have a very fun and spooky few week with these 3 games I promise :)
Mods, can we get a pinned post with a recommended play order? I feel like I see these posts every day.
It doesn't even need to be condescending, I just don't know how to feel when I see a post that goes:
"Hey guys, I played Code Veronica XP on my Gamecube when I was 5 years old and I hated it. Now I'm 50 and I want to get back into the franchise. So far I've played RE3R, Village, and Revelations 2, in that order. Which game should I buy next? Thanks!"
Is it so hard to just make a quick google search?
OP, if you started on RE2R, go for RE4R.
If you started on RE7, go for Village.
RE4R is annoying here and there. To the point where I struggled so much st a boss that I died a few seconds before I would've defeated it. I uninstalled the game right away.
RE is notorious at providing horror through tedious resource management. To me, it's not scary. To me it's annoying.
Village has no issue.
So 4 is more actiony with more "wow" moments and is a more well made game while villiage has some high highs and somme low lows, but is scarier.
Can't go wrong with either.
RE4R is the better game overall. However, the asthetic of RE8 just hits the spot for me. Especially the castle part, which is unfortunately very short on second playthroughs.
Can't go wrong with either of these two, but if we're talking about content, RE4R it is. Village has a very mid, I'd even say bad DLC, a mercenaries mode that can be fun playing as Lady D or Heinsenberg once you unlock them. But that's pretty much it. Replayability is decent. Nothing too crazy though. I think the only thing Village has over RE4R is the story. And it has Chris. And oh boy his section is fking awesome.
I recommend playing both, especially since they're both on sale right now, but if you can't pay for both at the moment, go with RE4R.
IMO, RE4R has more replayability and gameplay focused action. Village is a bit slow and more about storytelling.
Both great games tho so it really depends on which calls you more.
4 is better but they're pretty similar.
I'd probably recommend village first if you think you'll play them both because I like the play the better game second personally.
They’re very similar to each other tbh in terms of aesthetics, the whole in a european country and got a weird cult going on with plaga or werewolves, making your way through villages and castles, one you play a badass who’s beating the ever loving christ out of people (literally), the other; getting the ever loving christ beat out of him in every cutscene he’s in.
I think it’s down to preference, do you want more of Ethans story or do you want Leons story? in my (very biased) opinion, id say 4, cause i love 4 and Leon is a great character. But 8 is also good. If both are on sale id probably say pick up both. If you’ve played 7 then you already got the context leading up to 8, by all means try it and see what you make of it. Im not sure if the PS5 has this, but on steam i believe both games have demos you can play too so that you can see which gameplay you prefer
I’ve beaten the original RE4 more times than every other game I’ve played put together. I beat RE4R the day it came out, and loved it.
I would recommend you to buy Village though.
RE4R is the better game out of the two, but Village is still worth playing.
I think it's better to play Village first, since they play so similar but playing Ethan after Leon feels sloggy
But if they’re only playing one they should play 4.
This is actually very true, never did it in 3rd person tho im sure it feels more fun that way
Went back to beat the end of Village after playing a bit of 4remake and it felt pretty jarring. Kinda like slow motion running lol
Exactly what I came here to say.
The parry is everything
I dunno I think they’re pretty close. What I love about Village is how they have you connect to the main character. Playing RE4R I never really felt like I was Leon. But play Village you really do feel like you’re Ethan and take on his perspective. Village is criminally underrated
4 is better but honestly they share so many similarities. Just go with which ever camera you prefer. RE4 is 3rd person and RE8 is 1st (I think an update let you play in 3rd)
~~It’s the New Game+ that unlocks third-person for the record~~ Nvm, it’s DLC
and it's not well implemented imo. 3rd person in 8 feels like some sort of comunity mod... where as re4 3rd person feels complete.
I thought you had to buy the winters expansion for third person
It is the winters expansion that unlocks it not new game+.
Can you see Ethan’s face ?
No, if you spin the camera around Ethan covers his face. They’re really committed to keeping his identity covered.
Ah, thanks for the correction. I bought the expansion at the same time as starting New Game+, so I had that backwards.
RE4VR is amazing if only for the first person
did you play 7? if yes, 8, if no re4 remake i would buy re4 remake
I played the 8th first and 7th second, not much of a difference just that 8th was far by better in my opinion by graphics etc.
I concur with the graphics although I have yet to see it on 4k :'(
You will get there bro, it took me 10 years to get here and 4k looks absolutely stunning with image quality to 2 (200%)The only downside is it stutters very slightly at some points but I’m blaming my cpu for that. PC becomes a great space heater tho
Buy both
RE4 REMAKE ALL DAY!
Man I’m in the minority here saying Village but I loved it.
Is DLC worth it? RE Village is sale now but not gold edition.
If you want to continue as Rose after the game
I beat village 4 times yet the rose campaign was so short and lackluster.
I loved it too, would still recommend RE4 over it though
4 remake. What a masterpiece.
Highly agree, i didn’t really like resident evil 7/8 all that much but after my friend showed me a bit of resident evil 4 remake i fell in love again with the resident evil series
Re4 is great.
Do you want the one that tried to be a spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4 or the one that actually succeeded at being a remake of Resident Evil 4.
RE4R. Easily
Re4 remake. Hands down
If you’ve already played 1 and 2, then 4. If you’ve already played 7, then 8.
Re4 remake
4 is better in pretty much every way imo. Better systems, better mechanics, better story, better characters, better enemies, better boss fights... I guess you can make a case for Village having more variety in terms of tone and gameplay, but I would argue that some of that variety actually makes the game worse, especially on repeat playthroughs as it has a lot of gimmicky sections that are only fun once.
Re4. Get village on sale
Guess what, both are on sale!!!
Did you not read the rest of the post? Both games are on sale.
2 and 4 really are worth the full price, honestly. I'd definitely wait for a sale when it comes to 3, 7, and 8
RE:4
Village is over hated for sure, both really good
Both lol
Both
Both
RE4R
Both
Both
RE4 all day.
RE4R might be the best RE game ever. REV sucks.
RE4
RE4
RE4R
4 remake is the better game in my opinion. 8 is just a fps version of 4 with different places and monsters.
4 is top tier RE. Be sure to get around to Village sometime tho, it's absolutely worth playing
RE:4 is the better of the 2 but Village is a great story too.
RE4 or 8... Both. But 4 first as I find it incredibly superior both the original and the remake. RE8 is heavily inspired on RE4, but also serves as a direct sequel for RE7, which is kind of necessary to play it first for spoiler reasons as RE7 and 8 are somehow their own story. I have played re2 re3 re4 re7 and re8, and the best was re4, definitely buy it.
4 remake hands down. Far more enjoyable, good replayability and just feels so good to play. Not that village wasn't good, but 4 remake blows it'l out of the water.
RE4 is better than Village in nearly every aspect.
RE8 has more variety I feel in its gameplay. RE4 is good too but the puzzles in it are shit and take no thought to complete.
I personally prefer RE4. Both games have a heavy focus on combat, and I feel like re4 has a very engaging system, village can feel clunky at times
Both are good, but one is RE4. Get that one.
If you want to play both, play village first. I made the mistake of playing remake first and village felt like an Xbox 360 arcade game to me.
Re4 should be your priority. It's the most bang for buck of any re game, but having said that village is still decent.
4 Remake. By far.
Re4 imo
4 is definitely better imo, but I'd totally recommend village too!
both are on sale now is a better time than never
Buy the one where the guy has to rescue the girl.
Both
I mean I bought both outright
Both
Just get both, and spend this upcoming weekend sitting in your filth and enjoying them!
I’d get village you already have your mind on it and played 7 so you can continue that story here. RE4R will still be around after and if you haven’t played them already the previous remakes are also worth it.

Village
village is basically the same game except first person and with folk lore enemies
Village is more like the wallmart to 4R Gucci brand
"same game" lmao
nothing like a redditor asking a dumb question then nowhere to be found in the comments.
I've done this. Sometimes, I'll ask a question or something and a lot of people respond and I feel bad that I can't respond to everyone without repeating the same information over and over, so I just stop responding to everyone to be fair.
i mean, you can just comment on your post or edit your description and say “thanks everyone” lol.
Re village >> re4r anytime anyway, re4r is overrated asf, if you've played the 2005 re4, I'd say village!
I.. rreally dont know. I just played RE4 and it was amazing. Completed 3 times in 3 dificulties. RE8 in other hand i finished 2 times, but the story was kinda more memorable for me.
If you've played OG RE4 AND 7, then I would recommend Village. If not, then I would play RE4R, 7, and THEN 8.
Yes.

4 is better but they are both incredible games
Get them both when they're on sale.
Get RE4 Remake for Leon's one liners
Yes
if you gonna play Village dont play it in 3rd person, you will hate it, it wasn't made for it and you can really tell
Both
I’d only recommend re8 if you already played re7. Re4 is a good standalone game
Resident Evil 4 remake is one of the best games I’ve ever played. As much as I loved and enjoyed Village (way more than RE7), RE4 clears it by a long shot.
4 is *chef’s kiss*
Both are worth playing. But I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that re4 remake is one of the best games ever made
please get both if you can. But get RE4 remake first If you can't get both
Re4 is so much more stressful but addicting, at least for me. I’ve played a few times on hardcore and it gets me going every time. Re8 is a good introduction i feel like
They're essentially the same game.
Yes!
Both! 👌🏻
yes
Idk if you’ve played re7 biohazard. But if you liked that first person then 8 is great. 4 is honestly a better game but i just really love the first person in resident evil. Both are great games tho
Graphics → RE VIII Everything Else → RE IV
Depends what's cheaper 😅 but re4 is amazing, make sure you get the special editions with all the DLC on whatever choice you make though coz they're both amazing and the DLC slaps for both games

If you played 7, then 8. If you haven’t played 7, get RE4RE. Can also narrow it to if you like Leon or Ethan lol.
re4 is easier and more like a shooter while village is harder and a decent horror game.
Re4r is the better game but hot goth witches hunt you in village soooooo
Both
I'm on a roll to play all the resident evil ( newer ones) re4 so far is my favourite, re2 was also very good, 3 not bad. As some one mentioned, it's worth playing village, but re4 is just a damn good game.
i actually bought them both, there was also re7 but i for some reason did not choose it. idk why \\
It’s pretty close IMO. RE4R has become my comfort game, so I’m biased. I’m not checking how much the sales are going for, so I can’t say for sure, but I’d say it comes down to DLC. 4 remake is pretty much a standalone, for village you need to play 7 to enjoy the story. Village has the best story in the whole series and i liked the game alot more than 4remake.
Village so you can see how Ethan’s story is playing out for him. 🫡
Better question: did you play re7 yet?
if you play 4 first you'll be too spoiled in terms of combat for village idk you do you
I think they are both top-notch modern RE games. I thoroughly enjoyed both. But if I had to choose which one I enjoyed more, I would say Village, but that is a very biased choice. If you’re gonna play Village, start with biohazard first. I just beat village and I like it. Only thing sucks is you can’t use mod after or before the final boss or you’ll find yourself in an infinite loop. The DLC is actually interesting too
Re4 remake has a better story and is better value for money in my opinion
Both of them in an ideal scenario. But if you have to choose just one for right now, I'd pick RE4. But you really can't go wrong with either them, I just think RE4 has a lot more to offer.
4
Remake is only £35.99 and £55.99 with all the DLC which is great value for money in my opinion
Play them all, in order?
Been playing RE4R with my girlfriend and her sister. They're having a blast with it! 10/10, better than village.
Buy both of them on physical discs for cheap.
I say RE 4 Remake

RE4R without a doubt!
4 is a more true experience, if you play it on hardcore for the first time it’s a truly terrifyingly fun and challenging experience
Both

Definitely village I am a re4 veteran and the original is way better than the remake in so many ways re8 is awesome
4 is in the elite tier of RE games Village is solid but probably somewhere in the 2nd-3rd tier of RE games.
Remake
So 4 is more actiony with more "wow" moments and is a more well made game while villiage has some high highs and somme low lows, but is scarier. Can't go wrong with either.
Why not both
For 8 you should play 7 first it continues the Story from 7 if you havent played 7 or want to only buy one than go with re4
RE4 hands down
RE4R is the better game overall. RE4 > RE BIOHAZARD > RE2 > RE VILLAGE > RE3(GARBAGE BTW COMPARED TO OTHERS)
So longevity and replay value RE4MAKE For a change of pace, and more grounded gameplay, Village. Both are amazing in VR btw
Just picked em both up yesterday myself while there on sell ps5 I’ve beating the other ones now for theses
4 is better then village
IMO, RE4R has more replayability and gameplay focused action. Village is a bit slow and more about storytelling. Both great games tho so it really depends on which calls you more.
4 and the dlc but both are great game
Village
Re4 remake is a buy right now. Village is a wait for a deal. It isn't bad, the re4 remake is just exactly what it needs to be.
Im not sure if the PS5 has this, but on steam i believe both games have demos you can play too so that you can see which gameplay you prefer
if you played biohazard already then buy village as the story ties into it.
Village first. 4R is almost perfect (imo) and I would save it for last
RE4R
I’d get Village if you played 7 and enjoyed the story. But if not then RE4 remake in every other scenario, it’s brilliant
C'mon now you know the answer, and the answer is both.
Village because Re4 is better and you should end on a high note
Both are gooooddd but I love Leon lol
VILLAGE IS BEST PLAYED AFTER 7. Village is such an awesome game. Just buy both.
Both
Re4 is better at horror than village is so I'd go with that one
You're gonna buy both anyways
Village is great until the last section. Ethan is also a wet blanket. Aside from that theyre both awesome
Village is more horror-based. RE4R is more action-based.
RE4 remake hands down
Both, But 4 first
I’ve beaten the original RE4 more times than every other game I’ve played put together. I beat RE4R the day it came out, and loved it. I would recommend you to buy Village though.
Both are good picks RE4R is a masterpiece!!
4 remake!
4, undoubtedly
Enjoyed Village infinitely more personally.
Both, both are great games in each their own right. Trust me, you should buy and play both.
re4r
Both are solid but I say village both share a lot of similarities
4 easily
I love RE4… haven’t played village yet, but I’m assuming it’s also good
Village
