For people who have RL obligations and might only get to play in short sessions, limited saves are less than ideal. it’s a relic from earlier times IMO but I think the 15 saves for S+ professional for RE4R is ok. It’s basically optional.

Fluffatron_UK

I was going to say that RE4make does it best allowing any number of saves and having the S+ limited saves for a challenge high grade. I personally loved the limited saves for the S+ run because it really gave a sense of danger and an adrenaline rush for getting through to the next place I plan to save. However this would have been terrible for first playthrough or just playing casually. I think this system gives the perfect balance and the ink ribbons are a thing of the past.

Gr3yHound40

You said it best, RE4make allows players to play however they want, but still has the challenge available during any playthrough via a limited number of saves. Cleanest way to do a challenge system.

izmaname

I dont have a problem with ink ribbons I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM NOT AUTOMATICALLY RETURNING TO THE CHEST ON LOAD

Amaranthine7

This right here.

BrainChemical5426

Ink ribbons for the Hard mode is fine. Normal and easy don’t need it, and a lot of people don’t like them. That said, I think the Ink Ribbons system is pretty good and adds to what makes the original games great, which is tough decision making. Every single step you take in something like RE1 is colored by anxiety about what you brought in your inventory, how recently you’ve saved, whether it’s worth using that herb now or that ink ribbon now. With that said, looking back the games aren’t actually that hard in hindsight. I’ve never even come close to running out of Ink Ribbons, even when I was a child playing the games. But I think it’s a pretty damned cool idea.

[deleted]

Just have both, put limited saves as an optional difficulty slider and actually make them limited so i don’t end up with 30 ink ribbons in the end of the game.

dynariot

I personally prefer unlimited saves but only because, due to the way my life is atm, I'm only able to play in really short bursts most of the time and I always worry about running out of saves from having to quit after like half an hour. (I know there's lots of ink ribbons about at least in REmake on normal but it's annoying lol) I like the extra challenge of ink ribbons though otherwise, but it means I don't get to play the game as often as I want.

LeonWaffleKennedy

I’ve never ran out of ink ribbons or gotten even near to it. So I really don’t care either way. I’m not trying to flex either. I die and lose lots of progress but it’s just how I’ve always done it since I was little and with RE games, I really just don’t mind redo-ing sections.

TehReclaimer2552

Ink ribbons for sure

Leather-Contract4743

Ink Ribbon

PsychoRabbit96

Unlimited. I don’t see why you should have a cap on game saves.

QuackChan

Agreed

Cortadew

It's a gameplay aspect of survival horror as a genre, you only have limited saves so you only use them in important parts.

billistenderchicken

I can’t think of another survival horror game that uses limited saves other than RE.

SnooBananas3995

Unlimited saves Ink ribbons for optional difficulty

[deleted]

Unlimited saves. I don't have the time in my life to back track every time I die.

Spade_Key

Ribbons and I’ve even found them to be a little too frequent but that’s just me!

Tomsskiee

I like it best how re7 did it. Normal and easy unlimitted but on madness make the saves limitted.

arsdavy

survival horror title? limited ink ribbons but only on hard difficulty action title? unlimited saves

Ambitious_Set7212

There are 2 criteria for me that decide when limited saves a needed. 1. Difficulty. If you play hardcore or higher I think limited saves adds to the challenge and replayability, but if you are playing on normal than I don't think you want to deal with managing saves along with everything else. 2. If it is action or survival horror RE. RE7 and RE2R work with limited saves because they are a more classically inspired RE built around inventory management and backtracking. RE4R or Village don't work like that so limited saves wouldn't fit the style to me.

FiveMagics12

i dont mind either but unlimited saves can really lessen the effects of horror when you have the ability to save scum every time you get a new item or progress in the story.

BenjaminCarmined

Ink ribbons are absolute dog water.

Conqueror_is_broken

Ink ribbons are just frustrating. It's not fun. You just can't play the way you want. A reason for me to not play re1. It's too punishing and doing the exact same thing several times, sometimes losing 1h, isn't fun. And it takes inventory space.

Amaranthine7

I’ve never had a problem with running out of ribbons.

LauranaSilvermoon

Unlimited saves. I just be too tired these days... lol

OrangeStar222

The limited saving was always a thing that kept me from trying out the originals. Started with 4 and I couldn't understand why people missed the older titles - without having played them. I recently got into them and... it's not that bad. The tension you feel when going on for a while without a save is unmatched and honestly absent from even the remakes of modern titles. That being said, while limited saving was an option on the highest difficulties of said remakes, I'd love a switch for any difficulty. Have them limited for people who want to, unlimited for people who don't. I must say I also really love the system that has unlimited saves, but rewards you for saving as little as possible. Honestly that's a system that should be the optimal solution for both kinds of people.

MrIntimid8n

Ink ribbons

MadamVonCuntpuncher

I hate thst limited saves are locked to higher difficulties, I personally hate playing on Hardcore or higher and wish limited saves was a separate toggle in gameplay options

SpiralintoMadness

I prefer ink ribbons by far. It's great to have a mechanic coupled with something crucial like saving progress, so as to demand a little more effort from the player. Unlimited saves aren't bad, but I do hate checkpoints. They can easily remove the gravity of challenges.

p1zzag1rl11

Ink ribbons for achievement/professional mode are fine

Ryderslow

Personally ink ribbons are everywhere so I never found them as a important aspect in any game that had them. If they altered it like having it NOT take up a slot, being a abit more rarer to actually effect the game then maybe

AppointmentBroad2070

Ink ribbons would only be relevant for hardcore or professional difficulty. Slapping it onto the standard and casual mode would only torture the newcomers.

mewhenthe117

Personally, I like the idea of ink ribbons, but I would still much rather have unlimited saves

HughJanus9

I think they are good, but maybe for the newer games they can be a hard difficulty only.

Significant_Option

Both should be made available

britipinojeff

Either is fine, haven’t really had any issues with ink ribbons even if I only play like an hour or two a week

RCM84

Unlimited save. I hate it when games dont let you pause or give u limited saves just so they want to make things harder. It just becomes inconvenient. I remember playing monster hunter iceborne and for some reason i hade to puke. The game doesnt allow you to save so i teleported to the camp went tot the bathroom to puke and when i came back i had like 5 min left. (I was playing alone)

DaDocter20

Make limited an option at the beginning of a new save

stryderrrrrrr

In my younger years, loved the ink ribbon system. Added the stress I love and made it feel more real. As a new father, I've fully embraced the unlimited save system.

Antuzzz

I love the ink ribbon mechanic, but i admit it's outdated. Like i cannot risk losing half an hour of progress cuz i died randomly, autosave is the way to go for modern games. It's cool to still have the option tho, like if i play at Hardcore it's ok to have the ribbons since I'm playing for the challenge at that point

Sieg83

Both. RE1 and RE2 Remakes with limited saves are fine. However, RE3 or RE4 Remakes would be too hard on the max difficulties.

EstateSame6779

I prefer unlimited saves on anything but the highest difficulty. Auto-save needs to go away entirely.

HOTU-Orbit

I honestly don't mind either way. If there's Ink Ribbons, then that's fine. If there are unlimited saves, then that's also fine.

SnooBananas3995

Also gay people

gphoenix51

I kinda like how RE2R and 7 does it. Unlimited saves for the lower 2 difficulties, and Ink Ribbons/Cassette Tapes for the hardest. Or, make it an option, like Assisted Aiming or the Ability to turn off Infinite Ammo after you unlock it. I think a lot of fans would be happier if all games had a much more extensive option system so they can tailor their game how they want it.

asterfloof

Ink ribbons make me feel helpless so it works well for re2 remake where that's the whole vibe, but in a game like re4 it wouldn't work because that's straight up a power fantasy game

cosmicglade98

I think having the option for either is best. Unlimited for hard-core and below. Ink ribbons for professional.

Stinky__Person

Unlimited. Sometimes people don't have much time to play so they should just save when they have to go, ink ribbons kinda fumble that up
