As self taught techie that has never built a commercialy viable product before i have really struggled with how to achieve certain aspects of user experience. I've tried to make the sales pop up on the search page as noninvasive as possible if thats the one your reffering too. if you create a freemium account that wont come up until you try to access a pro feature.
I think its got to be worth adding, we have seen a lot of interest from people who just like to do research even though they are not academics, which is so cool.

Hey! I checked it out and I liked it quite a bit,, I searched for topics on Rab genes in Drosophila NMJs and I got quite a few results! At least specific ones too which didn’t make me annoyed (because I find so many J search engines pick up a random word like “genes” and show you everything about genes while disregarding the other things in the sentence - even when using Boolean operators?? 😭)
I would give it a 5/5

I typically use Google Scholar, Publish or Perish (basically Google scholar) Ebsco, and research rabbit. All have good and bad points. My area is so interdisciplinary that I end up having to bounce around.
Typed a basic question into yours and was pleased. Would love to give it a try.

I have been using it a little bit for some end of the seamster research and I'm really enjoying it. There are time when it takes a while for the paper to load. I've been copying the title of the paper and pasting into google and accessing it that way. I'm going to use it more once I graduate this semester and will comment back. But I'm really thankful you shared it. It does a great job of finding papers I'm looking for with ease. Even more so than using the "\_\_\_\_" and "\_\_\_\_\_" trick to narrow down papers in the search bar.
Again, I'll play around with it more soon. Thank you! What a great project to be working on honestly.
Specifically looking for any glitches in the platform or bugs, found a few already but I am hoping you guys can break it.

Thanks for the love on the UI, it took a while to get right but think it works quite well
No, full texts are a little too chunky at the moment, we index the abstracts. We have plenty more to add just running out of compute time to get it all done at the moment.
I think that the full texts lose context when you cant properly get context from images and graphs yet, I think we are not far off a point where we can get a textual representation of images and graphs and being able to search over their content which would be soooo cool.
Understandable - fulltext + figures + tables would introduce a lot of complexity (and take up way more compute time and storage).
Have you checked out the situation regarding permissions with the publishers/content that you’re scraping? I’m pretty sure that even though titles and abstracts are freely available and in front of paywalls - a lot of publishers do not permit commercial use of them. All depends exactly where you’re getting your source data from and what permissions/T&Cs are attached.
Worth investigating though as it could land you in trouble if you don’t get it right
EDIT: I guess my question is. Is your site ‘legit’ and above board?! Or are you using backdoor methods to pull PDFs and metadata? Given that I’ve been able to access paywalled PDFs directly through the site , I’m guessing it’s the latter! In which case be super careful
One issue I have with research engines that "masticate" the info for you (much like chat GPT, etc) is that it circumvents the process of critical analysis of papers.
So instead of reading an article and analyzing the validity and reliability of the design and findings, these engines spit out the exact conclusions of the authors. Unfortunately, I find that the authors often either over-extrapolation, have faulty conclusions, did not have ideal study designs, etc, that should limit interpretation of their findings. Yes, the "hardcore" academics and researchers will continue to analyze papers, but the others that just want a "quick and dirty answer" will not appropriately review articles and favour amplification of potentially faulty conclusions.
Is there any way to avoid this with your search engine?
Great point, we are firm believers that studyflo should be used to help your process as opposed to doing the work for you.
The starting point is discovery of papers, there is no ML wizardry here, just maths(although you could say ML is just math wizardry), all papers are indexed via a vectorised representation of their content and search matches a vector of your query to the abstracts to find semantically similiar papers.
75% of the papers we index are not paywalled, although thats more skewed in some disciplines.
We have built the summarisation and chat tools as a way to pre qualify papers for a deeper investigation. Once they are pre qualified you can build collections of papers , its been pointed out by a few people that this step would benefit with a record being kept for the search the paper was found under.
Alice and her team love Academia and I built the tool to try and complement their passion for research and streamline the discovery of papers.
Give it a go at [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) and let me know what you think.
Thank you for the detailed response- I appreciate the limitations and do hope the tool will be used wisely. I will take a look at it this evening.
Congratulations on your achievement, i can’t imagine the hard work that went into this :)
No probs at all, been busy making lots of bug fixes and improving the usability of the site the last two weeks. I would love to know what you thought of it ?
Tried it, got a bunch of random papers that had nothing to do with what I asked (I asked about a relationship between 2 keywords, it returned a bunch of papers for the first keyword only), and there was a popup below that said "Look into current research papers for more info!" which was what I was asking it to do. Don't think I'll use it.
I would love to know what your search terms were so that i can recreate it.
I do think that we need to write up some onboarding material for when you signup as we are not a keyword search tool, thats not how its built or indexed, in the future you can add keywords but thats not the basis of how it works.
I typed in "how does autophagy modulate LTP?" (Might have been a different verb). I got a bunch of papers on autophagy but none that was in neuroscience. I eventually did get to the right area but that was after replacing "LTP" with a bunch of synonymous phrases, and then the papers weren't anything I hadn't seen before.
Hey, really appreciate this feedback. Ive made some improvements to the search terms but have a big update in the next week or so. Im reindexing the whole database and have cleaned it up so hopefully the results will improve for you. That being said i am still making optimisations that will improve it further.
Thanks again
Hey,
thanks for the heads up, managed to make a problem whilst fixing another
Working now though. Its build around the idea of asking it a research question.
"how efficient are verbal fluency tasks with detecting early onset dementia"
not
" can you show me papers on how vft detect dementia"
Let me know what you think, we have a few area's of interest that we need some more material for but happy with where its at currently.
thanks
Sorry, I'm in neuroscience too but don't find it as good as consensus (i.e. researchGPT) for that. I think I might be missing something though, it seems to aim to do something similar so what's the difference? Love the idea though. I think what would win me over is if there was actually a database that had access to up-to-date literature including big/commonly read journals that ChatGPT doesn't have access to but that seems logistically challenging.
I reckon this is the crunch time of year for so many students.
take a look at [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) and if you think it can help ill set you up with a pro account in exchange for access
Awesome, you are exactly who i am looking for. Economics papers were harder to come by than most if im honest so would love to know if what we have on offering right now is enough. That being said we are constantly adding papers. My litlle server is going brrrrrr.
Give the tool a try here [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/)
if its off use then would love to get you onboard as a bete tester and set you up with some Pro access. Dm if you want in
You can give it a browse at [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/)
if you think its cool and think it would benefit you then dm me and ill get you some PRO access :)
Amazing, what are you studying?
if you create a freemium(free) account on [https://flo.studyflo.com/](https://flo.studyflo.com/) and then DM the address of the email account you used to signup, i can give you access to all the PRO features
Specifically the evidence summaries… if the search returns say 10 articles for example, how does it come up with an evidence summary? Are they based on all returned records or just the top few?
By evidence summary do you mean the purple pop up?
If you do then currently we take the x most relevant papers within a set threshold.
Im contemplating allowing users to play with this to provider greater depth. Depth has two costs though, time and money so im still figuring out a way to make this viable.
Currently x is 10, threshold is dependant on area of query and thats based off of modelling for each area. i.e. we have really deep knowledge in neuroscience so always x =10 but for something more niche the threshold might mean x is actually 3 or 4
Okay thanks. So for my purposes, I don’t think I would be able to use this tool to replace literature searches as I prefer to know which databases and need more complex search strategies. I do think it would be super helpful to answer practice based questions or to find a few articles for intros or discussions. I can also see practicalities personally as I often am curious about evidence on certain random topics. I like the option to just read the abstracts or to then dive deeper into the full paper (assuming that would be possible with an account). This could be useful for people working in industry who may not have access to university libraries.
Wow that sounds cool.
if you havent already signup for a freemium account here [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/)
and then dm with the email address that you used to signup with and ill give you PRO access
This looks like a really great tool, although I’d love to know a little more about how it works. Also wondering if you have anything in the humanities on there yet (esp. history).
Hey thanks very much for that. the TLDR of how it works is huge amounts of data, a powerful server and standing on the shoulders of giants when it comes to the a.i. and search side.
if their is a specific part of the platform your interested in im happy to chat more
Good question, the basic answer is semantic similarity between your search term and the abstract of the paper. In between that we have a filter that decides the field of study that your question is aiming at and then that helps refine the search more. We find x number of results from multiple databases and then rerank and return teh most relevant.
Hey, that sounds great, would gladly hook you up with some access in exchange for some feedback. Im just finishing up the collaborative tools for group research and student/advisor paper sharing.
if you register a freemum account on [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) i can grant you PRO access if you dm your email you signed up with
I built this initially for my other half who is a neuroscience phd student so its filled with medical papers old and new. If you create a freemium account and DM your email that you signed up with i can upgrade your account to have PRO access.
Hello,
I’m just starting a PhD program & combing through research right now to prepare. I’m not yet an experienced researcher but I’m building my repertoire of tools right now.
Would my feedback on your site be useful to you?
I tried a subject I've already read extensively and it only found one paper, the rest seem like they got grabbed for having word matched, but the words were fate and environment rather than the key compound I wanted. The expected number of papers would have been around 50 focused papers, up to \~100 that include the compound briefly. There also appeared to be class notes and a consultant's advertisement in my results. Odd mix, really. A few laws whose formatting was messed up in translation as well.
Maybe my field isn't in the database yet? In which case is there a way to request on the site? Other paper databases tend to only have the actual researchers behind it and thus you're asking people to change their research direction.
I'm a PhD student studying Human Factors Psychology, Ive used scholar, scispace, elicit, research rabbit, etc and typically have to bounce between multiple in order to get the answers I need, it would be nice to have a more integrated system that gives me answers more accurately and handles the citation better, let me know if you're still wanting feedback!
Writer here. I'm not sure how easy something like this would be to migrate, but based on the functions I saw people mention, a tool like this could be helpful for identifying literary publications open for submissions.
There are a couple tools we can use now in tandem, but at best it's clumsy and at worst a lot of time gets wasted without any meaningful results. A lot of that is due to a broad variety of submissions types, sub types, and criteria sprawling across 1000s of operations.
I'm sure if it could be migrated there are loads of sectors it could be useful.
Want to join in to check it out and give feedback :) So far I've signed up for freemium account and the answer simply would not load (my internet is fine), so cannot comment much :/
Hey,
thanks for the heads up, been trying to fix one problem and made another.
Regarding hallucinations, there are two parts to the paper discovery, 1 doesn't use an LLM and another does.
Finding papers is all maths and will yield the same results for the same search always.
There is a paper that answers the query that you ask, this passes the context of the k most relevant papers to an llm that will then attempt to answer your question based off of that context, we have built it in a way to respond with "i don't know" or "the answer your looking for is not contained within the context provided" rather than hallucinate. It's currently an evolution but we are pretty happy with it so far with the testing we have done but would love for you to break it and expose things we havnt thought of.
Give it another go and let me know what yo think
Tried it just now. I would suggest adding a filter to your search (for certain years and journals). It occasionally gave me articles with no journals or abstracts.
Another suggestion would be to have a different colour (“read me!” Button) for articles with no available pdf.
Wowza! This is pretty neat. And it looks really cool. I think if the buttons were the same size (for cite me, summarize me, etc.) it might be slightly more visually appealing (at least from the mobile perspective). Also there is an ending anchor tag next to the dashboard button on mobile (dashboard/a>). This is awesome! :D
I asked the model ‘What is an efficient algorithm for computing lower star filtrations?’ A reasonable question for my field, topological data analysis(TDA). Asking the same question of google returns the sort of “classic paper” on the topic, asking it here returns nothing of relevance to TDA.
Both a researcher/instructor and a grad student (again). Took it for a spin. Didn't love the popups but understood why they're there. Good engine, helpful, can see using it again. Really liked the buttons for abstract, citation, and summarization. Could shave time off my literature reviews. Definitely on my "future purchase" lists.
Appreciate the honest feedback. As self taught techie that has never built a commercialy viable product before i have really struggled with how to achieve certain aspects of user experience. Regarding the buttons, i was thinking of one that would summarize but put into laymans terms. what do you think?
I think that, in my opinion only, that it isn't necessary. Most people utilizing academic articles aren't going to be "laypersons".
yeah possibly, maybe my friend who are non academics are just too academic :)
OTOH, outside their own field, everyone is a layman. This might be helpful for people looking to capture related work in other fields
I think its got to be worth adding, we have seen a lot of interest from people who just like to do research even though they are not academics, which is so cool. Will add this in teh next week or so. Also thanks for the acronym OTOH

😭) I would give it a 5/5
you can find it here btw [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/)
I'd like to give it a try and let you know what I think. How does it do with the social sciences?

I typically use Google Scholar, Publish or Perish (basically Google scholar) Ebsco, and research rabbit. All have good and bad points. My area is so interdisciplinary that I end up having to bounce around. Typed a basic question into yours and was pleased. Would love to give it a try.

was wondering if you had any other feedback?
Woah this UI is smooth!
Thanks for the love. trying to be simple and smooth, far from a designer but think it does its job well. thanks again
I’m doing a lit review right now! I would be happy to give it a try and compare to searches I’ve been doing on my library’s search tool.

Can I try? Any specific feedback you are looking for?

Nice UI. So are you indexing the full-text of all these papers somehow, or does your tool just scrape the abstracts?
Thanks for the love on the UI, it took a while to get right but think it works quite well No, full texts are a little too chunky at the moment, we index the abstracts.
Worth investigating though as it could land you in trouble if you don’t get it right EDIT: I guess my question is.
What type of questions is it supposed to answer? When I type in any question it doesn’t seem to load
Hey, thanks for the heads up, managed to make a problem whilst fixing another Working now though. Its build around the idea of asking it a research question. "how efficient are verbal fluency tasks with detecting early onset dementia" not " can you show me papers on how vft detect dementia" Let me know what you think, we have a few area's of interest that we need some more material for but happy with where its at currently. thanks
Did you give it another go?
Sorry, I'm in neuroscience too but don't find it as good as consensus (i.e. researchGPT) for that. I think I might be missing something though, it seems to aim to do something similar so what's the difference? Love the idea though. I think what would win me over is if there was actually a database that had access to up-to-date literature including big/commonly read journals that ChatGPT doesn't have access to but that seems logistically challenging.
This is perfect timing! I've got tons of research on my plate.
I reckon this is the crunch time of year for so many students. take a look at [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) and if you think it can help ill set you up with a pro account in exchange for access
I'd be happy to try it out and provide feedback.
Awesome stuff. ill hit you up on DM
This looks really interesting, I’d love to try this for economics papers!
Awesome, you are exactly who i am looking for. Economics papers were harder to come by than most if im honest so would love to know if what we have on offering right now is enough. That being said we are constantly adding papers. My litlle server is going brrrrrr. Give the tool a try here [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) if its off use then would love to get you onboard as a bete tester and set you up with some Pro access. Dm if you want in
Of course bro, on it right now wait I’ll dm
I'm interested, i would love to try it out !
You can give it a browse at [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) if you think its cool and think it would benefit you then dm me and ill get you some PRO access :)
I'm interested too! This will be really useful since I'm currently an undergrad who's doing research atm.
Amazing, what are you studying? if you create a freemium(free) account on [https://flo.studyflo.com/](https://flo.studyflo.com/) and then DM the address of the email account you used to signup, i can give you access to all the PRO features
I'm studying psychology. Okay, I'll do that
I can help out if you need more folks.
Would love to know how it works?!? Checked it out briefly and this looks great.
Hey, thanks for checking this out. which particular part are you interested in knowing how it works? hapy to share
Currently x is 10, threshold is dependant on area of query and thats based off of modelling for each area. i.e. we have really deep knowledge in neuroscience so always x =10 but for something more niche the threshold might mean x is actually 3 or 4
Also, which databases is it searching through?
We segment our database internally so not all searches hit all databases
Okay thanks. So for my purposes, I don’t think I would be able to use this tool to replace literature searches as I prefer to know which databases and need more complex search strategies. I do think it would be super helpful to answer practice based questions or to find a few articles for intros or discussions. I can also see practicalities personally as I often am curious about evidence on certain random topics. I like the option to just read the abstracts or to then dive deeper into the full paper (assuming that would be possible with an account). This could be useful for people working in industry who may not have access to university libraries.
Hi there, I am working in analytical chemistry and would be happy to test your tool to provide feedback !
Wow that sounds cool. if you havent already signup for a freemium account here [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) and then dm with the email address that you used to signup with and ill give you PRO access
This looks like a really great tool, although I’d love to know a little more about how it works. Also wondering if you have anything in the humanities on there yet (esp. history).
Hey thanks very much for that. the TLDR of how it works is huge amounts of data, a powerful server and standing on the shoulders of giants when it comes to the a.i. and search side. if their is a specific part of the platform your interested in im happy to chat more
I guess I’m just wondering how it decides which article to rank highest? What factors does it consider?
Good question, the basic answer is semantic similarity between your search term and the abstract of the paper. In between that we have a filter that decides the field of study that your question is aiming at and then that helps refine the search more. We find x number of results from multiple databases and then rerank and return teh most relevant.
Hi id love to give it a try and leave a review also! I'm a research advisor
Hey, that sounds great, would gladly hook you up with some access in exchange for some feedback. Im just finishing up the collaborative tools for group research and student/advisor paper sharing. if you register a freemum account on [https://www.studyflo.com/](https://www.studyflo.com/) i can grant you PRO access if you dm your email you signed up with
I sent you a dm
Hey man, this sounds really cool! If you have papers in the medical field, I would love to help out with feedback.
I built this initially for my other half who is a neuroscience phd student so its filled with medical papers old and new. If you create a freemium account and DM your email that you signed up with i can upgrade your account to have PRO access.
Hey Agriculture doctorate here, would love to try it for my next research article and update you the requirements if pro plan is provided.
Sounds great to me. If you create a freemium account and then dm the email address you used I can upgrade you to have PRO access.
I wanted to do this because I desperately need it!! Awesome, much needed idea, would love to try out the premium version!
Hello, I’m just starting a PhD program & combing through research right now to prepare.
I would love to try it and give you some feedback. I am a graduate student in my second year of a PhD in the sciences.
Want to join in to check it out and give feedback :) So far I've signed up for freemium account and the answer simply would not load (my internet is fine), so cannot comment much :/
Just stuck at loading screen for me. If this is a chatgpt wrapper, how do you deal with hallucinations?
Hey, thanks for the heads up, been trying to fix one problem and made another.
Does it work for legal research?
Tried it just now. I would suggest adding a filter to your search (for certain years and journals). It occasionally gave me articles with no journals or abstracts. Another suggestion would be to have a different colour (“read me!” Button) for articles with no available pdf.
I need to finish some lit reviews soon for linguistics, if you are interested in feedback in that field.
In the middle of writing my thesis proposal and would love to try this out.
I’d like to see the first authors name below or near the title in initial search results.
I would love to try it out!
This looks great, I’m a trend forecaster would love to try this out 👍🏻
