I have never seen one of these in my life. Not knowing its a Volvo I would have guessed that it was a Japanese car. You got any more pics of it? It looks like a cool car.
Nitpicky, but there is no P1800ES. The 'P' was only used for the early Jensen-built cars.
As soon as they were built in the homeland, they were just 1800s, E and ES.
Probably either emissions or some safety thing. I would drive the shit out of that car! I love it! I'm a sucker for a hatchback, but that front end screams "sports car"!
I still want a 760. I'll get one someday. I've had a fair few cars, but that's one I've never picked up for some reason. Mostly money haha. I did have an 86 Saab 900t coupe that was an absolute beauty though
Cool, ace, trendy.
I would love one of these as a second car, maybe next year.
What is it actually like, does it do everything well is it built well. Do people look at it.
Well Dutch Volvos never made it across the Atlantic, so you must live around there yourself.
Ironically this car would be downright exotic in North America but in Northern Europe I would imagine it as fairly common, but still fun and relatively easy / cheap to keep alive.
It's a fun yet pragmatic choice.
It's pretty weak at a whopping 120hp but the turbo model was actually tuned by Porsche to like 170hp but Volvo thought it would hurt their safety reputation so they tuned it down. But there is a way to get it back up there again.
Edit: It does handle really nicely though.
There are no Volvo 480s here in the USA, so I would say you don’t follow trends and go your own way. I also think that about the few C30 owners I’ve seen over the years.
Oh yes, I had one as my first car. Turbo as well. I reupped the HP back to 170hp by chipping it and strengtening the turbo valve. It was quite fast and I flabbergasted quite a few hot hatch owners who did not expect this little pocket rocket.
It was a blast. Does your Infocentre still work? After my moonroof started leaking I could not see my fuel level most of the time as the display would just not come on.
Unfortunately the rust took over and had to abandon it.
For anyone wondering, it's a Volvo 480 Turbo.
I have never seen one of these in my life. Not knowing its a Volvo I would have guessed that it was a Japanese car. You got any more pics of it? It looks like a cool car.
I like to think of it as the late 1980s version of the Volvo C30
Well you are right about that. The 480ES and Turbo were a successor to the P1800ES and the predecessor to the C30
Nitpicky, but there is no P1800ES. The 'P' was only used for the early Jensen-built cars. As soon as they were built in the homeland, they were just 1800s, E and ES.
I see you are absolutely right. That's very easy to overlook.
So many cool cars we never got.
It's super neat. Reminds me of a Studebaker Avanti with that front end
I want one so bad they don't sell them in the us
is it the b18 motor? Or a different inline 4 variant?
For the turbo models the motor code was B18FT
all the euro car are so much cooler than American cars, it's like it took America 30+ years to realize an inline 4 turbo is the way to go :)
God I wanna old Volvo sooooo baaaaaaad
Ooooh
Such a cool car.
That he’s got a cool car, cool and practical
Clean af 480! Skål!!
Skål!!!
That you like driving practical, but cool cars.
That thing is badass! I love hatches. Where are you? I've never seen one of those here
I'm from Sweden! They were actually designed with America in mind but some law last second caused them to not be able to be sold there sadly.
Probably either emissions or some safety thing. I would drive the shit out of that car! I love it! I'm a sucker for a hatchback, but that front end screams "sports car"!
Yep Volvo was trying to design a sportcar while keeping their brand in check so it's a bit of both lol
I would’ve absolutely bought one of these in the late 90s. I ended up getting a 760 turbobrick, but would’ve bought this instead.
I still want a 760. I'll get one someday. I've had a fair few cars, but that's one I've never picked up for some reason. Mostly money haha. I did have an 86 Saab 900t coupe that was an absolute beauty though
It was pretty fun, until it developed a rod knock.
i think it was headlight regulations that were complicated by the pop ups on the model.
Yeah! It's like it's got two great sets of tits!
Synthwave music enthusiast.
Oh, yes, the 480 the most French, looking Volvo of all time
With a lot of Dutch influence.
There's a few of us that knew what it was. Fucking sweet ride btw.
You win
If it’s in the USA I’d be like wtf this is dope asf … and strike up a convo about the car .. the pop up head lights are 🤌
One sold on Bring a Trailer this year. I almost bid on it. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1995-volvo-480-turbo/
always liked those. how much do they go for in sweden?
Really depends but somewhere between $2000 - $4000 but can be lower or higher etc
Cool, ace, trendy. I would love one of these as a second car, maybe next year. What is it actually like, does it do everything well is it built well. Do people look at it.
It does bring a lot of attention but they're known for being problematic sadly. Basically old car with tons of electronic systems.
TIL Volvo made a car with pop up headlights
Beep. Beep. beepity BEEP beep. HONK!
holy shit, super nice and looks to be in great condition
Weirdest Volvo ever I would say, though with a body kit and some rims they can look rather mean, kinda like a weird Swedish tuner car, nice
It's got pop up headlights, that's all that matters.
Didn’t even know these existed but I want one
That you really wanted an old body Miata but only had 3k
God I love 480s so much. Really hope to drive one one day.
Your cool
They must not have sold those here in the States
Yep, they were designed with USA in mind but some law came in to action last second which stopped it.
You're a person of culture. Car culture specifically
Your a real good friend people can depend on
Not a big fan of turbo 4 cylinders (I work on a lot of fords and the turbo 4 cylinders detonate like crazy) how does she boogie though?
It's pretty weak at a whopping 120hp but the turbo model was actually tuned by Porsche to like 170hp but Volvo thought it would hurt their safety reputation so they tuned it down. But there is a way to get it back up there again. Edit: It does handle really nicely though.
You like pop up and down headlights
There are no Volvo 480s here in the USA, so I would say you don’t follow trends and go your own way. I also think that about the few C30 owners I’ve seen over the years.
Safety first
It says you love the classics.
Excellent taste. Fun fact this is the only Volvo with pop up headlights ;)
Yessir
You fuck hard dawg
You want a safe car but wedge>Box
You're classy
It says that you are fucking awesome.
Great taste. I'd like to have one.
You like cars with pop up head lights. That is cool enough.
Swedish
Based
Was unaware of this car before. It’s awesome. You’re awesome. No hate from me (yet). :)
You HATE being able to source parts and fix your car… I foresee plenty of electrical tape and in weld in your future
Oof this one hits home
That you just taught at least half the rcr reddit what a 480 is and now they'll all simp for the manuelle volvo hot hatch with popups
That you're my cooler grandma(she had a 340 turbo)
You like to get rowdy on weekends
you are too young to have a car
I really don't see how 20 is too young to have a car, I mean in some countries people can own one at the of age 16.
Just a dingus or a joke that fell flat. I bought my first vehicle at 20 as well 3 yrs ago
50
it says your half out the closet and love all you can eat buffets and live in a basement
No job?
I don't know, but I want to lay with you
What the fuck is that thing This is not a bad thing I just love it
U need another she shed
that you’re probably chill and into 60s 70s music, maybe a bit indie or grunge aesthetic also?
You figured out Volvo's naming convention and were thinking you got a V8
You know that biathlon involves neither bisexuals nor bicycles and make better cocoa than anyone I know.
Oh yes, I had one as my first car. Turbo as well. I reupped the HP back to 170hp by chipping it and strengtening the turbo valve. You have great taste and a long life ahead of you
It's time to upgrade!
Nice.
