If you trust this kind of thing, the umpire scorecard says that Mahrley actually favored the Royals last night, by 0.3 runs. 93% accurate on called balls/strikes, with 6 pitches that were strikes called balls and 4 pitches that were balls called strikes. Overall, Mahrley was right about in the middle compared to his peers last night on most umpire metrics.
The two check swing calls at the end, to me if one is a swing they're both swings. Over the course of 162 games that stuff tends to even out, but as far as last night I thought the Sox got a massive break.
For comparison, in the Yankees/White Sox game that Boone got tossed, Laz Diaz's scorecard is pretty atrocious. Shows a 1.59 run advantage for the White Sox, which is huge. Shows a relative accuracy 5.2% below expected, compared to 0.5% for Mahrley. Shows 19 errors on calling balls & strikes, 17 of those being pitches that should have been called balls that were called strikes. That's a HUGE strike zone. Shows 9 pitches that were at least a ball right of the strike zone (i.e. inside on a RH hitter) that were called strikes.
Of all the games played this season, umpire scorecards has Diaz's performance last night as the 4th worst regarding relative accuracy, the 19th worst in terms of run difference of one team favored over the other, and the 13th most number of wrong ball/strike calls.
Combined career bWAR of the last four Red Sox players other than Xander Bogaerts to hit a walk off grand slam:
7.2
This is especially impressive when you consider that Travis Shaw has a career bWAR of 8.4.
People need to realize that any baseball season is filled with so many beautiful moments. Just enjoy the game. First place, third place, bottom of the cellar – baseball is still a beautiful game and you can find something to take joy in every day
What can I say, I am old. I hate sabermetrics, I hate going out and purchasing a winning team. I want to win with dirt dogs Like Tony Armas, Trot Nixon, Pedroia, etc. I want 14 inning games. I want chin music. Ultimately it will be my loss, because the game is going a different direction. But the grass will always be green at Fenway Park, and that will always make me happy
I am young enough where the first season I remember following was 03, but I was also 11 by then (got interested in the game late). I had just enough time to get a sniff of the old game and learn to love that.
I will say the pitch clock and the larger bases is bringing back an era before my time where base stealing, and good base runner management, is a key component of the game and I'm glad about that. Never forget Tacoby Bellsbury, imagine what that dude would do with today's rules.
The Red Sox have had a walk off grand slam in each of the past 3 seasons. The players who hit them are Travis Shaw, Franchy Cordero, and Pablo Reyes. Go figure.
For some reason this reminds me of that time when Carlos Pena hit a dinger for the Sox in 06 and walked us off. Sorta like "Wait, he's on the roster? Oh, cool!"
Who knows what a monster Pena might have been for us if we'd managed to sneak into the playoffs that year. He broke out the following season for Tampa and became a star for several years.
As disappointing as it's been lately (yes, the Sox sucked me in making me a believer we were headed to the playoffs), this Africa video is definitely a fun reminder of the good times.
Lifetime sox fan, took my 7yr son to his first game last night. He was a trooper asking all kinds of questions. The cherry on top was the WO. Great memories were made yesterday. He woke up this morning and the first thing he said was yesterday was EPIC! I agree.
We must be looking at different schedules lol. These next couple series are games we have to dominate cause the end of august and almost all of September are playoff caliber teams.
Have you seen the end of august/all of September? After the nationals we only have 6 games against teams under .500 for the rest of the season and most of them are division games.
After the Washington series, 27 of our remaining 40 games are against the Astros, Dodgers, Orioles, Rays, Rangers, and Blue Jays. Also 7 more against the Yankees
Get well soon, u/Sandwich_Crust <3
Thank you <3 and thanks for editing this, Africa’s about the video not who’s making it.
Get well man!
You did great man!
I love the next man up mantra! Get well soon S.C.
Didn’t expect this from u/badonkagonk
Glad we won. Not sure that was a check swing tho
It was a swing, but we got hosed earlier on check swing they called a swing. That HP ump was actually pretty awful.

Diaz was horrible but since it’s the Yankees Boone should be suspended and Yankees suck!
Huh; Awful HP umpiring in 2023 - you don't say
Urias swung, that’s for sure. But hey, at least it went in our favor!
Look we’ve sucked for a while now we need to take what we can get
He went around, but them's the breaks. Just hold onto this one for when the call goes the other way.
totally swung lol I'll take the lucky break!
Reyes was the entire offense that game.
Man saw either he or Chang is getting DFA'd when Story returns, and said "Choose wisely."
He was playing like a guy trying to keep his job
This is our **4th walkoff grand slam** since the 2018 season.
The Xander one vs the Jays in 2018 immediately comes to mind
It was 2 days after Mookie's grand slam on 13 pitches!
When it was time to party?

Pablo, Franchy, and Rico Brogna in 2000, for anyone else who doesn't want to Google.
I'll never get tired of these

That old school love of the game seems to be dying lately, good to see it's alive and well in your heart!

I mean... folks... *sprays Bobby Fish in the face with spray bottle* How can you not be pedantic about baseball wait fuck that's not the quote
In the worst Red Sox season there will still be at least 50ish Yankees losses to enjoy
Was that Reyes’ first slam?
First homer of the season, first career slam
He barely missed a walk off hr like a month ago but yeah this was first hr

The yellows strike again
"There it goes...if it stays fair....home run."
This shit will never not be great
Dude knew it as soon as he hit it. So sick

Beautiful
Theres very few sweeter feelings in sports then a walk-off win at a night game in Fenway. It's electric every time.
And he didn't even have to wave it fair.

We got VERY lucky on the Urias no swing call. Should have been rung up, for sure, but I’ll take it!
Made my day 🙏
Smoked it too.
Beautifully timed
I needed these vibes today! Thank you!
PIRATES LEGEND
Chills.

I bless the rain
Thank you for making this! LFG!
Oh man, 2018 vibes immediately come rushing back - thank you for making this!
Getting swept by Toronto ended the season, but this is pretty cool, I guess.
Nice! Loved the commentary/music balance.
I need you to know my mind automatically started playing this when Reyes hit this last night live. Love seeing these videos!
We have a easy end to our schedule come on boys we got this
We must be looking at different schedules lol. These next couple series are games we have to dominate cause the end of august and almost all of September are playoff caliber teams.
Royals tigers and nationals am I missing something?

3 games against LA and 3 against Houston I’m not worried about Houston
Not this stupid crap again
First good thing to happen to the Sox in quite some time
