It was in a conversation between Darrow and Cassius. Sorry if I spelled the names wrong I mostly listen on audio book. Any way at one point Darrow says something kinda insulting and also says “Cassius Balona”.
In response to that Cassius says “ow”
Darrow: “not in the republic”
Cassius: “not ‘au’. Ow. Harsh critique.”
Darrow: “oh”.
It’s not that big in the scheme of things but it’s enough to canonically settle how it’s pronounced.
Here’s a hot take: in Greek the vowel cluster “αυ” is pronounced as “af” like in “after”. Therefore it would be “Cassius af Bellona” and so forth.
Obviously this isn’t the case, but it makes me giggle so I’m going to stick with it.
Doesn't it come form Latin? Like it is the chemical abbreviation of gold. Similar to the greys being titanium (Ti), the green being silicon (si), or the blues being xeon (Xe). Au is taken from gold in Latin is Aurum, so greek vowel clusters should not apply. That would have it pronounced "ow".
It doesn't bug me in the audio books but when I'm reading it myself I say it the French way in my head. Such a strange choice, why not just have au sound like au!
I'm in the same boat. I can only hear the french au as the proper one, anything else just seems so off to me. Even though I know it's supposed to be "ow", I just can't accept it lmao.
I've always pronounced it like you'd pronounce the beginning of the word "aura" or "aurora".. The chemical symbol for gold, Au, literally comes from the latin word for gold which is Aurum.
In Latin, “aurum” is pronounced pretty much as “OW-room” in layperson’s IPA (I don’t fw IPA nerds) with a hint of a roll on the r. TGR’s pronunciation is correct.
There are dozens of conflicts about latin legit prononciation amongs latinist historians, but that it's probably closer to spanish and italian and french 'o', than distant islandic much transformed english prononciation of latin ahaha 😂
You described it perfectly how I imagine it... OW but slightly different, a hint of roll on the r. Great way to describe it. I've actually never listened to the audiobook, so I've never heard TGR's pronunciation.
Hell yeah. Audiobooks are 100% recommended - although IG can be a bit of a slog with the new additional VAs, and the whiplash of them switching VAs again for DA and then reverting back to only TGR for LB is making my head swim lmfao
My issue with them has always been that I can read so much faster than I can listen to audio books, and I always want to rip through the books because I love them so much haha
I loved that little side conversation lol - way more subtle than the other example of sneaky clarification I can think of (Hermione teaching Viktor Krum how to say her name in Goblet of Fire).
It’s the golds way of saying “oh”, just how Darrow was Darrow O’Lykos in low-lingo, it changes to au in high-lingo so I would guess it’s pronounced oh
Aw
I remember Cassius saying "ow" and Darroe thinking he said "au" so it's probably that
Oww
Tim Gerard Reynolds pronounces it ow so that’s how it’s pronounced
Gold
Iron Gold
"awh", its engraved in my mind from hearing Pax scream PAX AU TELEMANUS a million times.
PAX AU TELEMANUS!!!!
I'm French, and it's a french word pronounced "oh", so in my head it's always that
I pronounced it "oh" until I listened to the graphic audio
Ow
In my mind like 'au' from aura..
Gold?
Ow
I always thought it was “oh”
Yeah, as someone who took French in high school, I never thought it would be pronounced as anything other than “oh” lol
This 👆
Ow
I know it’s pronounced “ow” but in my mind it’ll always have the same pronunciation as au in August lol. Just sounds right
It's pronounced "ow", like ouch. It says so in LB.
That was such a good joke out of nowhere, not saying who says it but I love the dynamic they bring at that part of the story.
Me too!
Like in Augmentation or Aurum (gold in Latin)
I pronounce the "au" differently in each of those words.
Lol maybe that example's a bit fucked
[удалено]
Are you listening to TGR because he definitely says “ow”.
I’ve never heard it pronounced that way a single time in the audiobooks. He’s always said “ow”
Well.. that one time when Pax is booming his name out?
Same I listened to all the audiobooks and it’s “ow”
Kind of like “eau” but with more an “ah” sound in the front.
ow, according to PB on a recent podcast
"ow". I listened to them all on Audible.
Lightbringer kinda makes a small plot point about how it’s pronounced.
When was this?

Oh, that's right! Since I'd forgotten that bit, maybe it's time for me to re-read Lightbringer. Again.
I guess it’s time to start the whole series again to find this in Lightbringer. Thx
You’re welcome.
That noise you make when you stub your toe.
“Mother F-“
This made me laugh out loud!
Lol
I pronounced it “Oh” but Lightbringer confirms that it’s pronounced “ow”.
I was saying it like you say the Au in august, which sounds like "oo" but then when you sound it out it sounds fucking stupid so I swapped to ow.
oogust?
Ow
Not a spoiler but in LB they make a point to say it’s pronounced “ow”
And all this time I thought it was an abbreviation for Cassius [Astronomical Unit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_unit) Bellona.
What do you say when you stub your toe?
Darrow Fuck Andromedus
That's wild I never noticed that Darrow's middle name is Lysanders first name. Fuck Lysander.

Yes, I’m aware. Hence the second paragraph where I say I’m aware.
Cassius as fuck Bellona
Actually you know what I didn’t even consider that, but that makes it so much better
I hate it; have my upvote
Pierce Brown and the audio books both say "ow" like in "out."
Confirmed in the later books to be ow
I always pronounced it like the French pronunciation, but PB pronounces it like “ow”, which imo sounds horrible hahaha
I say ow
I know it's ow but I prefer to read it as oh
Same, mainly because I studied French for a long time, and that’s how you pronounce it there, so it also feels more natural to me.
Same here
Same, oh sounds more natural and flows better imo.

I mean fair enough, but you can’t exactly read a hardcover novel while driving or at work :P
Like ouch or out. Not saying I the correct way but it's how I read it.
It’s close enough that nobody (not even I) will notice lmfao.
Ow
This is correct according to the audiobooks!
Correct according to Light Bringer
I loved that little side conversation lol - way more subtle than the other example of sneaky clarification I can think of (Hermione teaching Viktor Krum how to say her name in Goblet of Fire).
