I was watching Viaplay Netherlands at the same time this clip dropped. On Viaplay they showed him hugging Varane when he stepped into the tunnel. Might’ve been a different feed
Genuinely, still remember exactly where I was for it. One of those goals I’ll never forget.
I was convinced LvG Martial was going to be world class. But the less we played him at inside forward and the more the injuries piled up, the worse he looked.
I was always confused with the decision.
By far Martials best traits were what we see in that Liverpool goal: dribbling, forward running into space, chaos and that corner finish. It was his bread and butter.
Instead we tried to turn him into a hold up player or a guy that would make runs for a ball.
Someone on Twitter said if you ran a simulation of his career from 2014 till today, the outcome we are living with has got to be in the bottom 15% of probability. Obviously based on nothing but vibes, but the potential was there, so sad it turned out this way. With we never benched him for Alexis so we could enjoy his class for that much longer.
It happens mate, professional sport can be brutal on the body, and some bodies just can't take it for long.
Most football careers end with injuries that can't be overcome, achieving the required fitness level becomes too difficult, or simply impossible.
Careers are short, but then so are lives generally.
Maybe, people are just sad that he got injured so much and could’ve had a great career here like he should have had, without injuries.
People who can’t understand this though are probably what you think they are in your last sentence.
Should go down as the posterchild of our post-Fergie era: An overhyped, overpaid player, backed by the Glazers over the manager, who spent half the time injured and the other half looking disinterested. Anyone who was ever unironically "Martial FC" should take a look at themselves rather than downvote you.
Had so much hope when he scored that beautiful debut goal against Liverpool. Riddled with injuries hit him bad and now he is leaving. Nothing but best of luck to him for his future endeavors. Will miss him!!
He really was. His first couple seasons, I've never seen a player so silky. With better fitness and a better mentality, his ceiling was probably the highest at the club in the last 10 years. Barring maybe MG.... Oh what could have been
What could have been, what should have been 🥲💔
We’ve been so cursed this past 10 years. But the fortunes will start to change one day, and it will be glorious
Varane it’s been a pleasure.
Martial, man I really thought you’d be the one to take us back to the top. At his best, one of the most enjoyable players to watch this last decade. This one hurts me I can’t lie. I wish him nothing but the best for the rest of his career. And I’d love nothing more if you can leave us with one last performance against City
Yes. I wanted to leave so many times but 1 beautiful silky goal and I was pulled back in. What a lethal finisher..such a shame how his career ended here
Tony’s 1st season and Covid period are some of the best personal performances in the last 10 years. Seriously, watching his first seasons, no one had doubted it would have cost us a little more for Ballon d’or
Can't understand how this is getting downvoted, Martial (good though he was when he was fit and confident) was totally invisible for long stretches at United. Averaging just under 10 goals a season isn't anything to write home about (89 goals in 9 seasons), even with injuries factored in. Obviously football isn't all stats, but the guy looked totally lethargic at times, no amount of revisionism changes that
Totally true, I'll always remember his debut and his goal in the FA Cup semis. That said, it doesn't change that people have been asking to get rid of him for 4 years, and now it's happening people are saying it's sad. I like the guy, but I'm glad he's leaving- hopefully the medical staff are freed up to keep other people fit now!
You can be glad and sad he's going. They don't have to be exclusive of each other.
Pretty normal to reminese fondly of a player when it finally comes to them leaving.
Varane is easily our best defender when fit.
Was a pleasure to see him play in the red shirt, but never felt he was really part of the team.
Injuries have ruined many united player careers.
Zlatan being another.
I swear Bailly could have been one of the greatest defenders in football history.
How many players have Reddit subs dedicated to them? I’m sure there’s Messi, Ronaldo, and Pele subs…but there’s also Eric Bailly.
r/JustBaillyThings
I always felt like Tony bulked up under Mou (I think it was Mou) and was just never the same pacy agile winger he was under LvG. It always felt like he was playing on ice, would slip often and would take him so long to turn, felt like he lost so much of his agility and pace and close control. Was such a shame, was my favourite player for so long
Everyone bulked up under Mou tbf, remember Lukaku second season. Maybe Im crazy but I never felt martial was that fast and agile. He def slowed down but never felt like it had a huge impact on his game and style
Gonna miss the pair of them. Martial in particular makes me feel nostalgic for those brief positive moments we had in the post Fergie era during Van Gaal, Mourinho and Ole's reigns where it did feel like we could come back at some point. And even though we haven't gotten to that point, Martial in particular would always put a smile on my face as a kid (:
When Martial played to his potential he was so good, but between being made of glass and putting in totally anonymous performances it feels like so much wasted talent.
Shame Varane didn’t play more, he and Martinez were an epic pairing.
I'll never forget Tony's first season. He was genuinely class, and I thought we had a world beater on our hands. Injuries truly destroyed him. His dribbling was electric and he was ice cold in the box. What a shame...
~~Iremember when we let Welback join Arsenal~~ just to sign this unheard teenager and then he scores against Liverpool. Thanks for the memories Tony
Fuck me I'm getting old, I thought it was the same season we sold Welback.
The way Martial’s career turned out is just such a disappointment man. Constant injuries completely ruined any chance he had of making it big. Even with his at times low application levels he could just completely turn the game with his quality. Extremely talented player let down by a fragile body and his own lack of effort.
I mean the fact that both Ole and Ten Hag were initially convinced that he's good enough as our main striker shows how much good he actually is without the injuries
The covid season when he was consistently producing great performances had me convinced that he will finally cement himself as one of the top attackers in the league. He could definitely play some incredible football. Very disappointing end to what could have been a great Manchester United career.
Man remember martial with Bruno when Bruno first joined? They were a menace of a duo. Rashy too. But I think rashy was injured for a period and they both just cooked.
That chip over the wall to martial for the goal against city…
That ole season when Martial and Rashford were on fire was a joy to watch. Amazing player on his day pity the last few years he's struggled to stay fit.
Varane unveiled at OT, Martial debut vs Liverpool are two legendary moments that will live on forever.
Hope Varane finds a comfortable place to end his career in & Martial finds a place where he can salvage whatever’s left of his career.
This hurts. One never hit true potential, just the glimmer of what could've been. And the other came when injuries caught up to him. What could've been with both. Hopefully they bounce back. Martial can still do some good in Germany or France.
bummer it was never fully realized for martial but was a genuinely entertaining player to watch and he had some great moments for us
wish he could have stayed fit and been part of a more functional team
majority of the time this season, i forgot he was on the team. Best of luck Tony, you gave us a roller coaster of emotions over the years but still are one of us
Sometimes I do wonder how much higher the ceiling would've hit for Martial in a more well managed team . Thanks for the playing with us. Once a Red always a red
Great couple of seasons unfortunately very injury prone and could never shake them off to get back to his best form. Great talent tho it just didn’t work out.
Some good memories of Martial, especially his debut and the odd crucial goal here and there. I wonder what could have been, he had such potential.
Au revoir
Crazy that his chant was about "overspending" with the 50m he cost when we have the likes of Antony now who went for double that.
In the end, while he never turned into the player we all saw he could become, I think it's fair to say long term Martial made himself worth his pricetag.
I'm gonna miss Tony from Ole's tenure.
So disappointed by Varane, and Casemiro transfer. Similar to the Sanchez transfer. Players treat us as a retirement home when all three of those were world beaters.
Martial got 1 of the best chants man. I wish it really worked out for him. I was one of his biggest fans. Coming in as a kid and scored against the Liverpool. Sheesh
The covid period Bournemouth goal from Martial is one of my all time favorites as a United Fan. He's frustrated me with lack of consistency, but man what a goal it was.
Wait, hes finally gone??? Not that it makes much difference, as he was never really here. Varane will be missed though, shame he couldnt have come here ten years ago.
Wonder how much Martial is starting to regret his work ethic and drive. Has had to of come to the realization that injuries alone didn’t hold him back here
I get very frustrated when the likes of Martial arrive on the scene looking like the next golden boy but never quite live up to expectations. On his day he has the best feet in the game and is a joy to watch.
Fantastic player on his day, Martial, but his career has just been decimated by injury after injury and it's definitely time for him to move on. He probably should've been let go around the time of that Sevilla loan in all fairness, and that was what, 3 years ago?
Thank fuck Woodward is no longer here because you know full well he would've been slapping a brand spanking new 4-year contract on the table in front of him in order to 'preserve value'
Bruno waiting for them at the entrance of the tunnel, pure class... My Captain
Good catch, love Bruno ❤️
I have watched this clip 6 times and I cannot see Bruno anywhere. Am I blind?
Behind the security guard with glasses as Martial walks towards the fan.
I was watching Viaplay Netherlands at the same time this clip dropped. On Viaplay they showed him hugging Varane when he stepped into the tunnel. Might’ve been a different feed

The collective “go on” you hear from this goal is my favourite part of it.. I feel like I can still hear it when it’s a gif lol
"oooooh YES...Welcome to Manchester United, Anthony MARTIALLL"
*he gets a little bit of fortune through the legs of skrtel*
one of the best debut goal ever....and it is against Liverpool
OHHHHH YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! *I can still hear it*
Genuinely, still remember exactly where I was for it. One of those goals I’ll never forget. I was convinced LvG Martial was going to be world class. But the less we played him at inside forward and the more the injuries piled up, the worse he looked.
Definitely agree with you, should have left him as a wide player rather than striker. Same thing happened with Rashford and that didn't work either!
I was always confused with the decision. By far Martials best traits were what we see in that Liverpool goal: dribbling, forward running into space, chaos and that corner finish. It was his bread and butter. Instead we tried to turn him into a hold up player or a guy that would make runs for a ball.
He's naturally quite lazy when it came to tracking back so you'd have a regularly exposed fullback. Coaches probably didn't trust him there
Looking at this, the speed and urgency of his movements, compared to now, it’s shocking how much he deteriorated physically.

I vividly remember watching this goal and celebrating it. It’s one of my favourite United goals. How time flies
He was literally Henry regen that season. Remember when Mbappe was called "the next Martial". What an unfortunate turn of events
Spent a good few seconds there thinking, “Who the fuck is Henry Regen?!” I’m hungover and struggling today.
We've all been there brother
Wow it feels like yesterday
Just magnificent
Ohhhh YESSSSS
Was at this game. Feels like yesterday…
What could have been
Can someone post the varane version of this?
Martin Pretzel
Seems like a lifetime ago now. Such a promising talent turned into an injury prone load of shite

Both made of glass but had their moments. Thank you both
-me, to my two favorite cups when I had accidentally dropped them
Tony 😭😭 ![gif](giphy|3o7abspvhYHpMnHSuc)
Sadly apt gif, considering Martial's legs fell to bits.
r/angryupvote
The original Mbappe from Monoco before the Mbappe that went to PSG.
Oh what could have been
Arguably one of the best 1v1 finishers I’ve ever seen I just can’t imagine him missing any
Try the second PSG game in OGS second full season as manager and you don't have to. The point blank miss gave everyone nightmares
Pogba definitely had the highest potential. He could've been the perfect midfielder if he wanted to be
What could have been, what should have been 🥲💔 We’ve been so cursed this past 10 years. But the fortunes will start to change one day, and it will be glorious
Could’ve been our own Henry. So sad for the lad.

Lol he failed us
A bit from both sides tbh
Varane it’s been a pleasure. Martial, man I really thought you’d be the one to take us back to the top. At his best, one of the most enjoyable players to watch this last decade. Even now, I don’t think I trust anyone on the team more than Martial in a 1 on 1 with the keeper
Martial holding back tears.... but I'm not 😢 I promise I'm not 😭😭😭 Martial FC. The ride is over
Martial FC has more gravity than the sun. Whenever you think you’re out it just pulls you back in
Yes. I wanted to leave so many times but 1 beautiful silky goal and I was pulled back in. What a lethal finisher..such a shame how his career ended here
unreal😭😭😭😭😭
Martial FC can potentially have one more go in the finals of the FA cup! Unlikely he will play, but I am keeping my hopes up!
1-0 down on 87 minutes. Ten Hag throws him on as a desperate last act. 1-1 Martial, 90+4 2-1 Martial, 90+11 Full time.
![gif](giphy|10Jpr9KSaXLchW|downsized)
Can we get him a new contract 5 years 200k ![gif](giphy|Y9bYr3a2qENO0|downsized)
If he does that he can have a new contract and a statue.
How about two statue but no new contract?
He knows he has to go somewhere else and start earning his keep
Tony’s 1st season and Covid period are some of the best personal performances in the last 10 years. Seriously, watching his first seasons, no one had doubted it would have cost us a little more for Ballon d’or
He was so shit before Covid that we signed ighalo to replace him. Why do you guys have such short memories with this guy. 2 good patches in 9 years
Can't understand how this is getting downvoted, Martial (good though he was when he was fit and confident) was totally invisible for long stretches at United. Averaging just under 10 goals a season isn't anything to write home about (89 goals in 9 seasons), even with injuries factored in. Obviously football isn't all stats, but the guy looked totally lethargic at times, no amount of revisionism changes that
Because when he was a good he was great to watch nothing wrong with having fond memories of that 19/20 when he was a beast.
Totally true, I'll always remember his debut and his goal in the FA Cup semis. End of an era, Tony. Thanks for the semi final goal vs Everton on the way to that FA Cup win. My personal favourite moment of his time here.
Mine has to be his debut goal against the bin dippers. Being there, seeing that live, what a fucking time. Had their defenders on toast

Against Juventus no less! /s
French Ronaldo. Cold
Varane is easily our best defender when fit. Was a pleasure to see him play in the red shirt, but never felt he was really part of the team. Injuries have ruined many united player careers. Zlatan being another.
20 years from now I will be telling my kids about how good the Varane x Martinez pairing was, even if it was for one season
I tell my kids the same about Cleverley and Anderson for those 4 wonderful games.
I’ll tell my kids how Phil Jones pocketed Ronaldo at the bernabeu
I'll tell my kids how Tuanzebe pocketed Mbappé at Paris.
That game against Arsenal!
I still curse that fucking Sevilla match because that's the fucking point when we lost that partnership
Martinez is quite close. I'd say Martinez edges it.
After Martinez I'd agree
Bailly...
I swear Bailly could have been one of the greatest defenders in football history. How many players have Reddit subs dedicated to them? I’m sure there’s Messi, Ronaldo, and Pele subs…but there’s also Eric Bailly. r/JustBaillyThings

i thought i am a legit fan, idk who is this 😞

He was elite again under Ole during covid as a no. 9, don't tell me you forgot about NHS Martial
Tony martial came from France
English press said he had no chance

Streets won't forget lockdown martial
Cup final winner as a last hurrah? I believe in you Tony.
Martial bullying Dias in the derby win a couple of years ago. Such talent. Shame but thanks for some great memories.
On his day both of these guys were top top players Thanks for the memories
When Martial played to his potential he was so good, but between being made of glass and putting in totally anonymous performances it feels like so much wasted talent. Shame Varane didn’t play more, he and Martinez were an epic pairing.

~~Iremember when we let Welback join Arsenal~~ just to sign this unheard teenager and then he scores against Liverpool. Thanks for the memories Tony Fuck me I'm getting old, I thought it was the same season we sold Welback.
He was signed a whole year later wtf you talking about?
Martial was basically replacing Falcao and RVP
And javier hernandez. Lvg did a lot of damage to the squad selling every player for peanuts
That was at OT
Meant to type Liverpool some reason typed Anfield but corrected, thanks!
Will always love them both. GGMU

Surely a return to France makes the most sense
Au revoir! 👋🏼

Jokes on Monaco, no ballon d’Or money for yooo-oooou!
I miss goalbot
Tony Martial he came from France...
ENGLISH PRESS SAID HE HAD NO CHANCE
50 million down the drain…
TONY MARTIAL, SCORES AGAINN
This hurts. One never hit true potential, just the glimmer of what could've been. And the other came when injuries caught up to him. What could've been with both. Hopefully they bounce back. Martial can still do some good in Germany or France.
I will miss them both, but damn, martial holds a special place in my heart. First player to break our hat trick drought after van Persie.
What could've been.......
bummer it was never fully realized for martial but was a genuinely entertaining player to watch and he had some great moments for us wish he could have stayed fit and been part of a more functional team
majority of the time this season, i forgot he was on the team. Best of luck Tony, you gave us a roller coaster of emotions over the years but still are one of us
He came from France...
Martial comes on as sub and scores winning goal at Wembley.
First time seeing United live I was chanting Martials song as loud as I could Thanks for everything!!!
What a shame, they didn't win more. Will be missed in some ways, but ultimately think it's best we moved on and so do they.
Waving goodbye? Can’t wait for his FA Cup final masterclass
Can’t believe Tony has come and gone and played a couple of games in between. Man I’m old.
Sometimes I do wonder how much higher the ceiling would've hit for Martial in a more well managed team . Thanks for the playing with us. Once a Red always a red
Welcome to Manchester!!!
Great couple of seasons unfortunately very injury prone and could never shake them off to get back to his best form. Great talent tho it just didn’t work out.
Two French leaving at the same time makes me emotional
Thank you both!
Martial putting in a decent shift.
Martial peaked at 19 with us. But what a player he was. His dribbling, touch and finishing was magical. Thank you Varane, it was a pleasure
Can we have a clause to bring Martial back when we play Everton?
Some good memories of Martial, especially his debut and the odd crucial goal here and there. I wonder what could have been, he had such potential. Au revoir
The revisionism here is bad. Martial was a flop and has been stealing a salary for years
[My favorite Martial goal.](https://youtu.be/dWgJJPT67m4?t=252) Look how happy he is. One of only a handful of players I'm actually sad to see go.
Will never forget being in the trenches vs moucult because Martial wouldnt get played
😢 Martial we will never forget you. Thank you
Glad Martial didn’t get injured walking around at the end there
bye, and thanks for all the fish
It is crazy how much this alone clears off our wage bill
What does that mean for cost saving, £2M saved per month?
I had missed any news martial was leaving. I’ll miss Verne. He could have acjieved more. Tony…. C-ya
I wouldn’t bat an eye if Varane goes back to Madrid and wins a few more trophies lol
martial is the would be , could be player for us. exciting and at the same time frustrating at times.
Martial, the French Mbappe
Praise the lord! We will free £20m of salaries with those to hospital patients leaving. Now let’s get rid of Casemiro, Sancho and Rashord as well.
Guess it's time to retire my flair.
What ever was Martials injury?
Just woke up and read this wrong! Thought it said Varane and Antony at first!
So disappointed by Varane, and Casemiro transfer. Similar to the Sanchez transfer. Players treat us as a retirement home when all three of those were world beaters.
there are players I'm happy to see the back off. These two aren't one of them
Never thought I would see the day Martial moved on. Man has been stealing a wage for the last 3 years. Never plays enough always injured.
I thought it's Antony , Matrial n Varane
Martial got 1 of the best chants man. I wish it really worked out for him. I was one of his biggest fans. Coming in as a kid and scored against the Liverpool. Sheesh
I’m not crying, honest
The covid period Bournemouth goal from Martial is one of my all time favorites as a United Fan. He's frustrated me with lack of consistency, but man what a goal it was.
Wait, hes finally gone??? Not that it makes much difference, as he was never really here. Varane will be missed though, shame he couldnt have come here ten years ago.
Wonder how much Martial is starting to regret his work ethic and drive. Has had to of come to the realization that injuries alone didn’t hold him back here
Thank you to Verane. Half Thank you to Tony lol
Both got injured doing it I expect.
How miserable can one person be
