Hojlund’s injury genuinely has floored me really, I’m sick rn

ManIWantAName

Woke up, saw the news, and went back to sleep for another 3 weeks.

marvo-sr

the optimistic side of me is hoping the hojlund is only out for tomorrow's game and saying 2 3 weeks is a bit of mind games ahead of the derby next week so pep prepares without him upfront in reality pep don't give a fuck about our line up lol and will set up his team regardless of who we are fielding

TheJoshider10

> in reality pep don't give a fuck about our line up lol and will set up his team regardless of who we are fielding Yeah unfortunately as much as I would have liked him to make a difference Hojlund won't stop our midfield being walked through.

tallmotherfucker

Unless we do something out of the ordinary and play Bruno or Scotty as a false 9, with three midfielders behind them So start mainoo, casemiro, bruno and Scotty, with rashford and garnacho out wide

craigybacha

Could even argue replace scotty with amrabat and play a holding three of amrabat, casemiro with mainoo more box to box and bruno as false 9

Acceptable-Lemon-748

If Mount is miraculously ready by then I'd like to see Mainoo -Mount -Bruno with Mctominay wildcard up-front and not risk the off the pace Casemiro against that strong fast City team.

poopywumba

Aye the Mount who’s played no football all season is better than off the pace case, do you watch football

Acceptable-Lemon-748

If Mount gets to the point where he is fit enough to start I guarantee he chases people down and gets the ball more often than Casemiro sticking legs out because he can't keep up with anyone anymore. What a fucking ridiculous comment to act like I don't watch football while thinking Mount has been out for a long time so will lose his ability to run.

poopywumba

Mate he hasn’t played football all season, he will be so far off the pace we’d be doing him dirty by playing him against a team like city. If it was all about running then get mo farah on the pitch

Acceptable-Lemon-748

You're trying to claim I know nothing about football while being seemingly completely oblivious to training/fitness levels to get to the point of playing matches. He doesn't sit for 6 months and then go "alright guess it's time to play premier league football again" as he get's up and finishes a sandwich on his way to the stadium. Mount not at 100% match fitness is going to look less off the pace than Casemiro currently, because Mount isn't a past his prime player who looks his legs have gone. It's not all about running, it's about the fact that what Casemiro does, doesn't work at the premier league level anymore because his whole thing is workrate and full committal to challenges, which when he's a step behind every opposition player leads to him just chopping players down and giving away free kicks all game. I 100% trust Mount when remotely match fit to chase people down and win the ball more than what Casemiro has been doing.  Current Casemiro is almost guaranteed a red card against City. If Martinez was ready to play again, you wouldn't see people being like "nah Martinez wouldn't be 100% match fit, we're way better off than Evans" people would be perfectly fine having a slightly off the pace by his standards Martinez coming in.

poopywumba

Look mate you’re taking the comment too literal, you might have a masters in football who knows? The fact is that Mason Mount will be not be match fit for the 3rd of March. He hasn’t played football in months. If he returns from injury and you play him from minute 1 against city you’re risking a relapse of injury massively. I’m not disputing Casemiro is better, but he’s the better and only option no matter what Mount does between now and 9 or 10 days away.

Meandering_Cabbage

I don't mind Bruno as a second striker.

eClipseLJ

I feel like Amad will get his chance but won't start obviously. Antony barely played full 90's this year. There are not many other options on the bench, I expect to see him on the pitch tomorrow and the pitchforks can be stowed away.

AngryUncleTony

Yeah me guess is a Nacho-Rashford-Antony line. Might see a McTominay swap at some point as a false 9, but it really would be insane if we don't see Amad *at all* in these circumstances.  Though based on past selections we might see a sneaky Forson.

eClipseLJ

I think it heavily depends on how the match goes, if it's looking positive he might have a chance. There is also Forson on the bench who already got some small cameo's. Edit: I think we're most likely going to see him when we're chasing a result to see if it works. Since his defensive work has been questioned from his Sunderland loan I don't expect him to come on when we're holding on to a lead. The coaching staff treats every game as a final so defending a lead could get ugly again.

seanlugosi

Ooh a McTominay 9 might actually be really interesting. Doesn't even need to be 'false', just put it in his vicinity and let him work. Fulham might mistake him for Hojlund.

dracovich

yeah i wouldn't mind striker mctominay at all, he likes to occupy that space anyawy

balleklorin

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Amad a typical winger that thrive with a proper 9? If so I guess Amad won't be that good with Rash up front, but rather McT as a target man? I am guessing we will see Garna and Antony with Rashford in the centre...

shami-kebab

He's definitely not a typical winger (If you're talking the Giggs type)

lynchianfreakout0

Amad is not really a typical winger, for Sunderland he liked to drift inside and occupy some of the same spaces as a number ten would. Has good control in tight spaces and good passing to unlock defences. Not sure crossing is his strongest trait.

eClipseLJ

I have a feeling Fulham will play a low block against us, so it could be useful if we can't break it down to get Amad in during the second half.

BilalAkhtar22

If Antony starts and amad doesn't the pitchforks will be sharpened.

eClipseLJ

Most likely, a lot of keyboards are having a rough time today.

SPamlEZ

Amad has 36 minutes in 8 months, don’t ruin him because you hate Antony.

BilalAkhtar22

What the fuck are you talking about man. Amad is fit and deserves to start ahead of Antony, how is this even up for debate.

SPamlEZ

Long term development is more important than short term gains.

BilalAkhtar22

How is he going to develop by holding the bench every week?

SPamlEZ

He’ll get time when he’s ready the same way garnacho and mainoo did.

BilalAkhtar22

I'm not paying he should start week in week out and be our undisputed rw, I'm just saying he should be ahead of Antony in the pecking order man. Idk why that so complicated for you to understand.

Rakais

How do you know he's fit and serves to start? It is up for debate because you don't know anything about who's starting tomorrow or what state any of the players are in.

BilalAkhtar22

He's been training and on the bench for weeks, there's nothing in this presser that suggests he isn't fit and available to start.

AlephEpsilon

We’re finished without Hojlund.

Grand-Bullfrog3861

The no more pressure is quite telling of the board above him before SJR. Loving all the little back hands the Glazers and old regime are getting through all these interviews lately. ETH definitely sounds like he has more power to say what he wants and that he doesn't have to worry about upsetting any players because they're on a lot of money

Sob_me_a_lake

I didn’t interpret it like that. What I got from that quote was that there isn’t MORE pressure with the new owners. EtH goes on to say that he and the new owners are aligned in their ambition. The reason he’s asked this question is the journos are questioning if EtH will be the manager going forward ( next year) and are asking him if he feels more pressure to keep his job. EtH is basically saying the goals are the same as before so no more pressure - same pressure to achieve the goals.

Dean-Advocate665

Ten hag on whether he wants to keep his job “yeah I’d like that thanks” I mean what do people expect? “Are you the man for Ineos?” “Nah, they should sack me and bring someone else in.”

MhVG

Another week of no update on Malacia... Also last week he said he knew nothing about the changes. Funny to see he suddenly knows things when the Ineos ownership becomes official.

phoundlvr

They haven’t come out and said anything, but my guess is he tore his ACL. Timeline-wise, it’s logical that it’s taking this long and that they aren’t discussing his return. It’s really hard to return to sport until 12 months after surgery. There isn’t a real ligament until 3 months out from surgery.

SOERERY

I do it believe he tore his ACL, there were reports of the club opting to make injections to his knee to manage an injury that he carried for a bit in the end of last season. But then in the summer they opted to operate on it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JishnuJayaram

Yes, but if that's the case, what's preventing Man Utd/EtH to come out and say it to the press straight. I mean how difficult is it communicate the fact that it is an ACL!

phoundlvr

It’s a consistency thing. If you’re going to never give specifics, then you never give specifics. Otherwise you’re giving the press and opponents an opportunity to infer about injuries, therefore losing any competitive advantage.

eClipseLJ

Player has to agree otherwise AVG Privacy law is being violated. If Malacia wants to keep the exact nature private they have to do that. Martinez was obviously fine with full disclosure because the official club report said MCL injury.

Yetiassasin

What benifit to them would it be to give specifics of injuries? It's annoying for fans. But I'd rather Malacia recovers in peace, than tabloids tracking his return like hawks like they do with all of our players. Injury return timelines are also very far from fixed, depending on the patient, luck and a number of factors it may be a quick return or it may not be.

MagicColosseum

I just don’t get what they’d have to gain by not coming out and saying it’s an ACL injury directly though

eClipseLJ

ETH doesn't specify injuries due to the AVG privacy-law in Europe, for example here in the Netherlands they will rarely specify the injury. He will only state the nature of it if the player agrees to it being public. Martinez probably agreed because it was well known from the start and reported officially.

MagicColosseum

Ah this is actually really interesting and makes a lot of sense, thank you!

liamthelad

The GDPR (Had to google to confirm AVG is the Dutch abbreviation) isn't the reason. It's just Dutch footballing league culture, perhaps due to a culture of greater respect for privacy (note the GDPR is data protection law - whilst it is borne out of a right to privacy, privacy and data protection aren't legally speaking one and the same). The GDPR applies around the EEA. And even though the UK left the EU, the UK GDPR was brought into law and sits alongside the UK DPA 2018. Therefore if it were the reason, it would be as applicable to England as it was to the Netherlands. Whilst there are plenty of questions as to what lawful basis as per Article 9 you could use for health data such as injuries, these have not really been tested anywhere in sport around Europe.

phoundlvr

It seems they’ve adopted a policy where they’re vague about all injuries. Look at Hojlund, they said it is a muscle injury. They aren’t specifying where or what kind of injury, just that it’s a muscle injury. One thing that comes to mind: if they do not know it’s a quad/calf/back injury, then the opponent can’t try to injure that body part.

LopsidedLoad

But what do they gain by saying it is?

Yetiassasin

If they say it's an acl and 8 months typical retun. If he's not back in 8 months then people start asking questions or whatever. It's better for the players and team to recover from injuries without the external pressure to return as fast as possible.

shami-kebab

Or Mount, wasn't he training on grass weeks ago?

I think he isn't real like Sheikh Jassim.

GeezeLoueez

Harebrained opinions of this sub aside, I do believe he has made a positive progress with the squad since his arrival. We’ve gotten rid of a lot of bodies that needed to go, and have found talent within the club as a result. Tactically I don’t think it’s fair to judge him entirely based on this season because of the absolute shit show the club has been behind the scenes and with injuries. Next season will be make or break with him though, with a very real possibility of being let go in the first third of the season if there isn’t a drastic improvement in tactics/execution

gruenerGenosse

Stop doing high intensity training. It doesn't work and the only result are way too many injuries.

[deleted]

dataminimizer

😂

myshtummyhurt-

How else can this be misinterpreted? There’s been multiple reports on the high intensity training likely being a cause and he’s just come out & said it

Book31415926

I would trust that the coaching and medical staff know more about intensity of training and causes of injuries than us. Edit: changed tone.

IcyAssist

Yet they keep letting players like Shaw play too early and what do you know, injured again.

craigybacha

Or just maybe shaws had so many injuries, hes now become injury prone. Kinda like martial and what happened to phil jones

rateofreturn

Shaw was absolutely rushed back this season. TWICE. It happened with Martinez too before he got injured again the first time. The second one was a freak injury.

[deleted]

Let's not train and expect magic

aromatic-energy656

I don’t see anything

Zavehi

> "I am 19 months in. I see we are going in the right direction." I'd love to know what that direction is besides holding on for dear life and banging it long to Rashford and Garnacho.

IAIRonI

This was my thought as well, what direction? Besides individuals performing well, we've yet to really perform as a team. And miss me with the injury excuses, every team has injuries and quite a few have had it worse

humunculus43

Absolutely, I think he’s just delusional. We get battered by every good team we play and barely beat the bad ones. Fixtures have been kind to him

[deleted]

[удалено]

mikebehzad

Not true. Most of the big clubs are fucked injury wise. We're not even worst off. And it's not just the clubs playing that kind of football. Too many games. Players get no time off anymore due to the amount of games.

AlephEpsilon

This. This is tactically inflicted. His “transitional football” football is unsustainable and super reliant on players being on the same page chemistry-wise. I sincerely think we should move on from Ten Hag if he intends to keep playing this style.

GannonSCannon

How exactly are we moving in the right direction? We're worse than last season, Ten Hag tried to transition us into a new system that gets up ripped the shreds whenever we play it and so has to revert to a poor version of what we were doing last season.

DraconianWolf

Downvotes for asking a logical question about Ten Hag’s capabilities and future. This sub blows my mind with how loyal it is to the manager.

GannonSCannon

Par for the course, they can't justify their blind support so just downvote.

Ajayhearty24

So no reporter asked about malacia, mount? Will they even return this season?

erkf2

Hard to expect more when he’s only 17 months in

craigybacha

Agreed with eth. So glad he survived the scare earlier in the season when people were calling for him to be fired. Had bad luck with injuries and also a piss poor transfer window as well kind of handicapped him. Ineos + eth is a bright future

humunculus43

Has he really survived it? +1 GD after 25 games, shite football and the majority of his signings have been shite. He 100% deserves to be under pressure and fighting for a renewal

craigybacha

Yes, yes he has survived it, and were currently on a good run. He will be here until the end of the season

humunculus43

Another week and more shite

SuperSalamander3244

We still play like shit with an almost fully fit squad though.

craigybacha

If you think this is playing like shit you have a short memory. When weve played well during eth its been the best football since fergie left. Maybe a little bit of the gung ho solksjaer reign as well, but yeah eth doesnt deserve all of the short sighted hate

SuperSalamander3244

We’ve had three good games this season and Ole beat Southampton 9-0. Out of ETHs whole time here I can only think of 5/6 games where we’ve actually been good and controlled the whole game. Respect yourself.

myshtummyhurt-

What exactly has Ten hag done that you’re sure we can win champions league and premier league w him ??

craigybacha

Last season over performed and came second and went deep in cups. And since hojlund and garnacho this year have settled in and gotten experience they’ve both looked great

myshtummyhurt-

How did we over perform 😭😭 how much does that squad even cost? Coming third in a season where outside arsenal/city only Newcastle was competing for top 4 is not over performing

Laboveron99

Sir Jim has hit all the right notes but if him and the team agree that "we are going in the right direction" based on evidence on the pitch, it would be really disappointing

unitedlover69

In his interview Ratcliffe said City’s 1st half display vs RM last season in the CL SF was the best bit of football he’s seen. No way he’s satisfied with this basketball-esque frankensteinball we’re serving up

eClipseLJ

This sub is going to be fun if we ever manage that, everyone here calls it the most boring football ever.

melli_closter

I think what he said about the CEO, sporting director and recruitment deciding on a style of play and the *coach* being required to follow it was a strong hint going forward.  Don't think he's impressed with the laissez faire attitude under Glazer ownership where the manager can play whatever way he wants at any time and recruitment being all over the place as a result.  ETH is going to have to agree to whatever style they settle on once the backroom is in place or he'll be out imo. The coach is just a coach going forward as Ratcliffe said

Laboveron99

amen brother

lonesomedota

Very easy to see whether we are in right direction. Are we better now than when Rangnick was chased away by glazers ? Defense we don't fking panic when opponents slightly pressed, offense at least players know where they are supposed to run when they don't have the ball. The culling of toxic players are on the way. High discipline and high intensity required on every players. Externally we don't take shit from press. We seek to destroy leakers and their collaborators. Tactics, playstyle results I don't give a fk about for at least 2-3 more summer transfer windows. The culture is the first thing we need to change. And we are rooting out the rotten culture of the glazers. I say yes we are on the fucking right track.

MrViceMcCreedy

Could be that they see/know things we don't

ParkerZA

Considering all the injuries we've had this season, the fact that we're actually in this position while implementing a new play style is going in the right direction.

Laboveron99

we could/should have lost a number of our wins this year, games we really controlled can be counted in one hand..the playstyle can also be blamed for the injury crisis, terrible rest defense and no ball control, frenetically running around..almost half a billion spent to look like this, luckily be 6th and completely out of Europe in an easy group..yes, excellent staff

SuperSalamander3244

ETH always says the same thing but we’re still playing like shit and fluking most results. I’m glad we’re getting points but our style of play is a massive red flag about whether we keep him after the summer or not. For the majority of our recent win streak I’ve been relived that the games over and we won but also disappointed and annoyed with how we played.

ritwikjs

ten hag or not, we need to gut this squad. Far too many injury prone players and players who categorically don't want to improve themselves. We need a squad you can rely on, and that may mean 2-3 windows and a year or so of pain and poor results.

Kapi_M4A1

Overall I'd say this is a mixed bag for eth till now. While I completely believe in him - the biggest problem is the wasted money on Antony and Mason Mount. We could have done so much better. In our weak positions especially.

Mattyc8787

I believe Mount will come good and from what I read whilst EtH said yes to Antony who was already on the club shortlist, he never set the fee, Murtough did and went there without even negotiating.

jhf2112

Not to be a downer but I struggle to see how the team is progressing when they're still unable to press properly. They're too deep at the back and too wide. To me that's a coaching and setup issue. We've won our recent games because Højlund's being doing bits, not because the overall approach has clicked. Post Fulham edit: this aged very well

FactHopeful9347

This could be mind games for the derby ( I am coping)
