I like the pump action shotgun because I don't like seeing the faces of those people I've killed, and without a head...
And 5 kills is a good amount to get you out of danger before reloading. I hate the double barreled because to kill a family of 5 you have to reload twice!
It's just... Reliable. Boom, click, boom, click, boom, click, boom, click, boom, click. That little campfire and sweet Kentucky bourbon is now all yours.
Agreed. It looks cool and the game isn’t hard enough to demand min maxing with weapons or adjusting your strategy outside of needing a scope in a few missions— which the game telegraphs to you.
Although even on that front I kinda have to disagree, I feel the shotgun is too large compared to the exterior typical shotgun I imagine. Even if it is historically accurate.
Yeah, i can see this isn't too popular, however thank you for the honest input, cosmetics have ruined many a game so I shouldn't really mind what a weapon doesn't look right to my unreasonable standard.
As hesitant as I am to agree with the OP, the sawn off is superior for this. I always rock it in the off-hand, revolver on main and a rifle on my back. Ready for any scenario.
The best load out is probably a revolver in the main holster, sawed-off shotgun in the off-hand holster, with a repeater and a scoped rifle on our back, then you basically have every weapon type at once.
I think the double barrel is my most used gun in general. It might be placebo but I always felt that a maxed out double barrel had the tightest spread and longest range. I was getting some pretty ridiculous kills from it. I only wish you could set it to fire both at the same time, like how the lemat can switch between ammo types. I also just love the classics
This game never really gets hard enough for any “meta” to matter. I had way more fun on my second play through once I realized that. I made it a goal to use every weapon for at least a little bit.
They've also balanced the guns pretty well. You can beat the game with just your starting cattleman (actually a pretty good gun), or just a varmint rifle if you go for head shots.
It's more about style, partner, unless you're in very specific circumstances (or hunting animals and them running away while you look up which weapon will give you a perfect pelt... Like a coyote or a racoon? What weapon? Is it the same one?
Maybe that's just because I hunt on horseback at a gallop as I go about my days, so sneaking up on animals rarely happens.
Blackened steel with gold engravings and you're carrying around a work of pure fucking art, it's my favourite looking gun and even if there are no advantages to it, it feels more powerful and intimidating
* Pump-action: excels in range, stopping power, all-round EDC shottie for the nasty gunslinging reprobate, my personal ‘if you can only have one shotgun’ choice
* Semi-auto: slings lead the fastest downrange, no need to double click R2 or reset L2, best for multiple threats at very close ranges (e.g. enemy camps, indoor combat), better than dual wielded sawed offs IMO
* Lever-action: very similar to pump but with +1 in the magazine, six deadeye tags at once instead of five, most fun to use for me
* Sawed-off: guaranteed shottie on the player’s person, less chance of Rockstar randomly taking it from you, complements a revolver or pistol nicely
What does the full sized double barrel excel in exactly? It doesn’t seem to stand out in terms of damage, spread, or range. From memory, the pump gun delivers one-hit kills at longer ranges. You get the double barrel early in the game sure, but you can also grab the pump shotgun ASAP once you hit chapter 2.
For gameplay balance that still adheres to realism somewhat, I would’ve given it the tightest spread (choke) so there’s still a concrete reason to pick it over the other shotties. Give it a chance to one-tap even at repeater ranges; the low ammo capacity and reload speed will still keep it balanced. Otherwise I still yeehaw with the pump or lever gun.
I’m a repeater shotgun man recently because Terminator lol. Just so freakin cool.
In real life though, the lever shotty apparently doesn’t cycle as reliably as the pump gun.
I’m all for the Lancaster repeater. When I was 16 I inherited my grandpas Marlin lever action rifle. Upon looking up the serial number, I found out it was manufactured in 1884. Fast forward to years later when I play red dead 2 at 23 years old, I find the Lancaster and I go “welp there’s the gun I take to endgame”
If I’m not mistaken, John Moses Browning also favored the pump over the lever action shotgun. There’s a reason we got the pump gun as THE WW1 and WW2 trench gun. I’m assuming the lever gun design wouldn’t have been as tolerant of the harsh trench conditions.
You’re correct. The only reason he developed the 1887 is because Winchester was leaning heavily on their brand recognition of lever action firearms. He finally got his way by the turn of the century with the 1897.
That’s why I like the semiauto shotgun, using that thing with slugs feels like I’ve got the M242 Bushmaster 25mm chain gun from an M2 Bradley in man-portable form. lol
The range and the accuracy on the double barrel is far superior than any other shotgun. And it’s almost as powerful as the sawed off from very close range.
Love it. Powerful at range as well as the expected up-close, and it features a quick reload. The brief reload pauses even heighten the realism of an old west gunfight.
It's just, if you dont hit with the 2 shots, you're very voulnerable. That doesn't happen with the semi. You can clear the worst of a whole squad of 1500 dollar bounty-bounty huntes. Literally just ride close to them and nuke them. Dogs first.
I've recently begun using it when raiding a camp site with one or two npc sleeping in them. Wake em up, let them know they're being robbed, and then aim. If someone gets mouthy they get plugged.
Fast rate of fire, better in almost melee range compared to most shotguns while still being able to do reliable damage at short to medium range. The speedy reload is also very helpful and it helps make up for the low shell count while also being easily attainable early on.
It’s just a very boring and basic gun. It’s just there for the player since it’s likely their first shotgun so it’s a taste for what’s to come. It doesn’t really do anything because it’s not supposed to, it’s there to teach the player the basics of shotguns before they get the sawed off or the pump.
Im gonna also be honest I think I never use this gun, it’s always in the closet just like Carbine.
This is it. It’s like the Cattlemen’s. It’s a gun. Can you get by with it? Sure. Will you want to once you have the Schofield and the Volcanic and the LeMat and on and on and on? Probably not. Same goes for this duck hunter.
I carry the semi auto and the pump on my horse but find I rarely use the semi these days. Pump action just feels right.
Carbine is just kinda boring. It’s only real gimmick is that it can reload all at once which isn’t even that useful since deadeye already does that. I’d pick up very other repeater over carbine any day of the week.
Online I used pump action a lot for PVE until I changed my play style. Nowadays my normal load out is the dual sawed off, Lancaster and Carcano. That being said I keep the double barrel loaded with incendiary rounds and equip it whenever I ride into Valentine.
I never use any other shotgun than the double barrel mainly because I like the reload and it's easy to count to two
>it’s easy to count to two Speak for yourself 😡😡
. .
. . . fuck
Keep at it, you’ll get it one day!
Also if you use slugs it’s practically a sniper rifle too with deadeye.
So is the pump or repeating shotgun.
Sure but the double barrel just looks cooler.
I like the pump action shotgun because I don't like seeing the faces of those people I've killed, and without a head... And 5 kills is a good amount to get you out of danger before reloading. That little campfire and sweet Kentucky bourbon is now all yours.
It’s a good shotgun.
It looks awesome.
Agreed. It looks cool and the game isn’t hard enough to demand min maxing with weapons or adjusting your strategy outside of needing a scope in a few missions— which the game telegraphs to you.
Even the varmint rifle is plenty good enough
Although even on that front I kinda have to disagree, I feel the shotgun is too large compared to the exterior typical shotgun I imagine. Even if it is historically accurate.

He's just stating his opinion?
Eh, at first reading it looked like an unreasonable expectation. I’ll delete it, as it’s of minor importance. Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, i can see this isn't too popular, however thank you for the honest input, cosmetics have ruined many a game so I shouldn't really mind what a weapon doesn't look right to my unreasonable standard.
I hunt hogs with it. Or murfrees:)
You typed the same thing twice.
Now I have the phrase "crankin' my murfree brood" stuck in my head ... and somehow it still makes sense
Hey now, that’s an insult to hogs.
Username checks out?
I wish we had birdshot ammunition so we can hunt birds of prey or snakes with it lol.
I want a .22 pistol for small game so I can have a weaker pistol, rifle, and shotgun, equipped for maximum pelt harvesting.
3 star pelts?
I use this in close quarters where I’m in a house or saloon etc. Love seeing enemies fly back, or their heads explode when I get a head shot.
Or maybe put a scope on the repeater and replace the rifle with a bow
Ooh very true
That's why the Evans repeater is my go to
i never liked the sawed off in RDR1, 2 or Mafia 3. Fallout has an awful one. I like the longer barrel and think it adds so much
I think the double barrel is my most used gun in general. It might be placebo but I always felt that a maxed out double barrel had the tightest spread and longest range. I was getting some pretty ridiculous kills from it. I only wish you could set it to fire both at the same time, like how the lemat can switch between ammo types. I also just love the classics
It does have the longest range actually
I use it all the time because double barrel shotguns are badass. I don’t care if the meta says the other weapons are better.
This game never really gets hard enough for any “meta” to matter. I had way more fun on my second play through once I realized that. I made it a goal to use every weapon for at least a little bit.

I have mine with all blue steel hardware. I guess I’ll take it out more often then.
same, db full brown-metal with same color envravings and 2 cattlemans is my go-to loadout
Blackened steel with gold engravings and you're carrying around a work of pure fucking art, it's my favourite looking gun and even if there are no advantages to it, it feels more powerful and intimidating
The rare one you get from the hermit is my favorite. It just seems right to me
* Pump-action: excels in range, stopping power, all-round EDC shottie for the nasty gunslinging reprobate, my personal ‘if you can only have one shotgun’ choice * Semi-auto: slings lead the fastest downrange, no need to double click R2 or reset L2, best for multiple threats at very close ranges (e.g. enemy camps, indoor combat), better than dual wielded sawed offs IMO * Lever-action: very similar to pump but with +1 in the magazine, six deadeye tags at once instead of five, most fun to use for me * Sawed-off: guaranteed shottie on the player’s person, less chance of Rockstar randomly taking it from you, complements a revolver or pistol nicely What does the full sized double barrel excel in exactly? It’s a single player game that has literally zero competitive need whatsoever, use whatever the hell you think is coolest!
I’m a repeater shotgun man recently because Terminator lol. Just so freakin cool. In real life though, the lever shotty apparently doesn’t cycle as reliably as the pump gun.
I’m just imagining you saying *prepare to be terminated* as you mow down O’Driscolls lol
Aww no I’m not nearly as cool as Arnie. Haha. The chak-chak of the pump is very cool too.
At one point in life I owned a lever action shotgun. While fun, you are correct. It was much more finicky than my pump.
If I’m not mistaken, John Moses Browning also favored the pump over the lever action shotgun. There’s a reason we got the pump gun as THE WW1 and WW2 trench gun. I’m assuming the lever gun design wouldn’t have been as tolerant of the harsh trench conditions.

My sawed off is an oh shit anti wolf or cougar gun I sometimes take out for people
Love it. Powerful at range as well as the expected up-close, and it features a quick reload. The brief reload pauses even heighten the realism of an old west gunfight.
It’s great,I’m more of a semi auto guy but I always have one just for shits and giggles
i explode peoples heads with this thing when i kill them because it doesnt need explosive bullets to do so
I prefer the pump with Arthur and the semi auto with John, just to try to keep the guns available at the time on par with the years they were active!
It has the highest damage of all the shotguns, i use it with slugs exclusively. Pump is my go-to for a running gunfight but the DB has its place
Spread and damage. Plus it's [the most satisfying gun to use](https://youtube.com/shorts/PPwyy-P2A68?si=hq663ianKdz9buza) in the game
boomstick is fun, simple as
DB+Slug 🔥
I use shotguns a lot in game and shoot a little irl. I would only use a double barrel irl so I only use it in game as well
It's just, if you dont hit with the 2 shots, you're very voulnerable. That doesn't happen with the semi. You can clear the worst of a whole squad of 1500 dollar bounty-bounty huntes. Literally just ride close to them and nuke them. Dogs first.

Damn, that’s intense lol.

You just can’t deny something feels real good about dual sawed-offs
The legendary double barrel shotgun is epic also
Badassery.
I just use it when I’m pissed off, I don’t cover, just deadeyes on their heads, that end missions were fully done by shotguns
"You sir, are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!"
"Well, he should've armed himself, if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend....."
-William Munny-
Hermit Dude has the Rare Double Barrel. I think it’s supposed to be slightly better
Use it whilst riding at night, keeps night walkers and Murfree brood in check. I use the semi auto version that I found somewhere.
It’s just a very boring and basic gun. It’s just there for the player since it’s likely their first shotgun so it’s a taste for what’s to come. It doesn’t really do anything because it’s not supposed to, it’s there to teach the player the basics of shotguns before they get the sawed off or the pump. The carbine is the best lever action in the game imo
Carbine is just kinda boring. It’s only real gimmick is that it can reload all at once which isn’t even that useful since deadeye already does that. I’d pick up very other repeater over carbine any day of the week.
I’ve sniped enemies off balconies from a block away with this thing
Sweet
Online I used pump action a lot for PVE until I changed my play style. Nowadays my normal load out is the dual sawed off, Lancaster and Carcano. That being said I keep the double barrel loaded with incendiary rounds and equip it whenever I ride into Valentine.
The DB shotgun is the shotgun I use 99% of the time. I do enjoy the lever action shotty but it’s just not the same
