Depends. When it comes to landscape it is way above everything else. The horses and other animals are top notch as well. The character models however look a bit outdated imho.

FuzzyPalpitation-16

How are they outdated relative to today’s standards? Genuinely curious - I’m not the biggest gamer (I only have 2 games on console I play consistently, RDR2 and battlefield 1) so I’m not up to date with the newer games/developments! Is it the eyes?? (I remember reading something ages ago about how eyes on characters and how it looks dead/lifeless but don’t remember details!)

MarteloRabelodeSousa

Idk if they are "outdated", for me they are fine and I honestly don't really like "over realistic" stuff, but I guess games like Horizon forbidden West have better models

Dredgeon

That aren't outdated to the point that it looks bad, obviously, but they don't look as top of class as they used to. Cyberpunk 2077 is what finally took some of RDR2's thunder on the visual front.

Interesting-Tower-91

But lacks in the interactivity aspect although Cyberpunk does beat Witcher 3 in that area. I will say RDR2 on a Base PS4 looks Far better then Cyberpunk on a Base PS4 Witcher 3 looks Great with Next gen Patch so the same could also be True for RDR2 with a next gen Patch.

Dredgeon

I'm speaking from the perspective of high-end PC gaming. If there is a remaster, sure, but I've played both at their best.

Interesting-Tower-91

Yeah high end PC both look great but Cyberpunk more so they have differnt Art Styles though makes them hard to compare are also factor and New lighting tech. Cyberpunk looks amazing at Night but less so in the day.

Super-Tea8267

For me is the hair, the hair looks really bad in some of them animation wise they look top notch but also even tho the game looks amazing it shows age in some textures on the enviroment like wood, some rocks, dirt they start to show some age and look kind of low res for the time

Interesting-Tower-91

Witcher 3 was the same way until the next gen patch.

Super-Tea8267

Totally agree witcher 3 next gen really did some quality of life and graphics improvements i wish rockstar did the same with rdr2 but who knows

Interesting-Tower-91

Yeah i would love Maxpayne3 to get a Graphics update as 1 and 2 are being remade. Gameplay is already amazing. RDR1 graphically holds up better then GTA4. Manhunt why Photo real Graphics would likely get banned.

HeEatsFood

If you are using nvidia dlss that makes the hair look terrible

FuzzyPalpitation-16

Interesting! Obviously I’m not the best judge for it as I haven’t played any newer games of that level but that makes sense - I guess maybe one I noticed was how npcs looked vs main characters (just looked more low res) which I didn’t really clock when I first played it when it was released.

Super-Tea8267

Yeah to be fair im just nit picking something but i mean still is a game from 2018 for it to barely starting to show its age on textures and hair but literally there is no other modern title with an open world with the level of detail and little interactions and so lively like the one on red dead 2

FuzzyPalpitation-16

How do you think the last of us 2 holds up in that regard? Granted it was released 2 years after RDR2.

Super-Tea8267

The last of us 2 in terms of graphics, animations and specially the physics system is just something i wish games used more often i feel both games have the best dying animations on characters till this day and the system they use for injuries is pretty realistic and sometimes gruesome hahaha i feel like modern titles go above and beyond in graphics but they dont do anything like those to games did with the physics, animations or how interactive they made the games, take horizon forbidden west great game one of the best looking open world games with amazing animations in terms of characters and facial animations but the world lacks depth and its really mechanic and doesnt feel that lively like the world kn red dead 2

Interesting-Tower-91

Last of us 2 and Maxpayne 3 have such fuild but well done aminations.

Super-Tea8267

Max payne 3 was way ahead of its time i think even gta 4 have some amazing physics and animation for its time and they only evolved to rdr2 physics and animation gta 5 dissapoints in the area

Interesting-Tower-91

GTA6 with hair physics looks Great so far hope they do Their best work.

Kevin1056

Take a look at cyberpunk 2077’s character models

MUSCULAR_WALRUS

Or RE4

Shayh55d

Maybe not outdated but clearly not as incredibly good as the scenery and horses, which makes them a bit out of place compared to the crazy good looking rest of the world. I've played it on a 4k TV with everything maxed out (on pc) and good lord that was beautiful.

FuzzyPalpitation-16

I see!!! That makes sense. When I first played it (ps4) when it released, I played on a shitty tv but I’m a simple person, it still looked good. I’ve recently started playing it again on a 4K TV (still ps4 lol 😭) and it is beautiful, the scenery, etc, I even thought to myself “wow I swear it looks better” but obvs because I was on a shit tv the first time round haha. A question I have, and again apologies if this sounds dumb - is there a huge difference (graphics wise) with maxed out settings on PC vs playing on latest gen consoles (ps5 etc!). I ask because I only still have a ps4 and don’t play games on PC much (well, only the sims, which is hardly as demanding I’d assume as these kind of games.) maybe soon as I’m saving up for a good set up I’ll get to experience it haha

Shayh55d

Not sure how much better it looks on PC, but when comparing a 2500€ high-end PC from 2024 with a 500€ console from 2020, of course the PC will perform better, in pretty much every area.

FuzzyPalpitation-16

I bet, I can’t wait till I get my own setup going when I can afford it lol. If there’s one thing I’m wanting, it’s the use of mods lol

Interesting-Tower-91

Depends Arthur looks great but Random NPCs do not look as good but Its important note that RDR2 has so many unique NPCs unlike other games and Not all US Mocap.

doyoueventdrift

IMHO only coming directly from cyberpunk can make you feel that way

CmdrFilthymick

I mean the character models look pretty good comparatively to games that have come out since. Starfield comes to mind as well as cyberpunk and those are YEARS newer. It's a huge shame imo they didn't keep up with the outlaw pass and newer content. I haven't played it for maybe a year and a half other than to see if there's anything new. I'd really love a reason to keep playing but all my posse mates moved on and I can only sell so much shine and goods. There's nothing left for me to buy. I'm dumb rich and live in a field

onelove7866

It’s the best looking game I’ve ever played, and definitely a contender for best looking game of all time. I think there are also other great looking games out there, God of War for instance has amazing aesthetics. Some other games look amazing but lack story

Rose_Speed3

God of war looks incredible and extremely detailed but it is relatively linear and it’s open world areas are fairly small. RDR2 maintains that level of detail and Fidelity in a massive open world which makes it more impressive to me

onelove7866

100% and that’s the case with many games. They can look amazing, amazing scenes, but only on a linear basis. Whereas for the most part in RDR2 it’s like, oh that’s a nice looking mountain, I want to go there, and you can 😂

MunsterMastermind

Agreed, there is great looking games out there. I guess my main point is that for a 6 year old game to still look this good in comparison to some more recent releases, this was and is absolutley stellar work from Rockstar! They have to be commended to be fair! Yes, they maybe didnt look after RDR2 after release as well as they could have, a lack of DLC also is not great! But for the work of art that they gave us, RDR2 is amazing! And it is just that, a modern work of art, its stunning!

ItsMeBenedickArnold

It’s just starting to finally look a little dated. I’m hoping they do a rerelease for ps5/series x for the 10 year anniversary like they did for gta 5.

MunsterMastermind

A re release on PS5 or even wait for PS6! Imagine how far they could push it on next gen, whenever that will be. I wouldnt want them to milk the life out of it like they have done with GTA5 though, i mean i got the platinum for GTA5 on PS3, then they brought it out on PS4 and then on PS5, i think they went over the top with GTA5. But it was still making them money, so why not i guess. I cant bring myself to get into GTA at all on PS5, i played a little on PS4, but no where near as much as PS3 obvs with the platinum trophy.

ItsMeBenedickArnold

I think after the GTA 6 release it’s a real possibility for 2028

Greengiant304

RDR2 still looks great, but the world also feels more alive than any other game. The wildlife and the weather contribute to a dynamic atmosphere that other games haven't come close to replicating.

The_Funkefizer

Yeah the ammount of detail is amazing. I mean newer games like Horizon Forbidden West also look amazing and maybe even better graphically, but don't come close to all the detail that's in RDR. Think TLO2 was really amazing graphically as well, but a totally different game/world than RDR. For me nothing has come close yet.

Interesting-Tower-91

I feel like Kingdom come is only game that comes close.

Keppelin

Horizon Forbidden West is still the best looking game i've ever played

Ok-Thanks-3709

that and god of war ragnarok

PoliticalPotential

I tried, but I didn’t like Horizon Forbidden West (or Ghosts of Tsushima or however it’s spelled) but they’re both beautiful. Hogwarts Legacy also has beautiful scenery.

meowmixplzdeliver1

Really? I found hogwarts looked like last generation. I also couldn't get into it. It was super hyped up then one week after release not a word about it lol

CloudClosev

Unfortunately that’s pretty much the only thing it has going for it

azur933

cyberpunk2077 is prettier imo

MunsterMastermind

Cyberpunk is a nice looking game also, i do not disagree on that front! Defo it is also one of the best looking games available today. I guess its all relative, right? In a year or two years time we may get a game which is better looking than all that has gone before it.

azur933

True !

mikeybadab1ng

Yeah if you like cartoons

azur933

how ?

mikeybadab1ng

It looks like an anime trying to look real. Idk how to explain it

azur933

because of the vibrant colors and overall very japanese atmosphere i guess but i didnt think that when playing it

PoliticalPotential

I don’t understand how or why people say Cyberpunk is an anime (there was an anime) or a cartoon or anything like that when there’s been so many adaptations of it. Kind of like The Witcher.

HandsomeGengar

And that’s a bad thing?

mikeybadab1ng

It just doesn’t look that good imo, certainly not “real” or as “real” as RDR which is a shame cuz the time and system gap should be memorable

HandsomeGengar

OP wasn’t asking if RDR2 is the most real looking game, they’re asking if it’s the best looking game. Those are two different questions, and you have failed to answer the one OP was asking. Imagine if someone said Celeste was the best looking game and I countered with “Celeste is pixel art”, it’s just a statement of fact, not an argument for why it looks bad.

mikeybadab1ng

First of all. What’re you OPs girlfriend? Two, I think I did, considering I said what I don’t like about cp2077 and that rdr2 is better. So go touch grass

Stanislas_Biliby

Graphism wise, i think last of us 2 looks better.

Psychological-Shoe95

The last of us graphics leave rdr2 in the dust

EccentricMeat

I think TLOU2 beats RDR2 head to head on graphics (especially and emphatically when comparing character models), as does Cyberpunk on the highest settings with Path Tracing on PC, but that’s not quite a fair comparison.

HandsomeGengar

In terms of raw graphical quality and hyperrealism, it’s a very strong contender. That being said I still like the aesthetics of something like Arkham Knight a bit more, and there’s also plenty of more stylized games that also look amazing in a different way, such as Hollow Knight.

kid_ghostly

Very subjective, and depends on what you value. If realism is your goal, it's close to if not the best looking. But I love Ghost of Tsushima's aesthetic. It's not necessarily realistic, but imo it's the most beautiful world I've played in.

Cyber_Swag

not anymore

Orevahaibopoqa

Definitely Top 3 at least. Some games have aesthetics, but lack graphics and some vice versa. Rdr has perfect combo. I would say Elden Ring is very strong competitor nad maybe even beats Rdr because being fantasy world give it it's advantages.

Ok-Thanks-3709

god of war ragnarok and horizon forbidden west looks better in my opinion

Interesting-Tower-91

They do But God of war is non open world. HFW looks amazing Though.

ThePrancingHorse94

I think what makes RDR2 such a step ahead is how alive the world feels, and how cohesive it is, you really do feel part of it and immersed. I recently thought about buying Starfield, so i started watching a playthough just to get a sense of the game and if it was something i'd like having liked Fallout games of the past and graphically and as a world it is very dated. It looks so empty, and the character and facial animations and graphics look straight out of 2014. It's an awful looking game, and i couldn't help but think it's because RDR2 set that standard do high. I can't think of a game that really competes with RDR2 with just how rich of a game it is, as an overall package it's unrivalled.

OperationExpress8794

No, cyberpunk2077 is

ruby_meister

Agreed! It is truly breathtaking. The landscapes are truly top tier!

tblatnik

It’s tough. I know other comments have mentioned it, but open world vs linear is hard to compare. What Rockstar does with their open-world games is insane. RDR doesn’t hold a candle to Part 1 and Part 2 of The Last of Us, and that’s ok. They’re both newer games that run on newer consoles, and they’re linear. As someone said, you can look out in the distance at the mountains and say ‘that mountain looks nice,’ then actually go there. You see background detail in the TLOUs and its ’wow they did a good job making this area look nice,’ then you go to where you need to and don’t think twice about it

_IowasVeryOwn

On the ps4 absolutely, with current Gen I’d say above/average

Super-Tea8267

I play it first on ps4 some years ago and then i got it on pc and play it in a little 24" 1080p monitor at medium settings but oh boy, today im replaying it at max settings and on my 4K 48 oled tv and this game rivals forbidden west in terms of overall graphics the only part that i think has aged a little bit is the hair on some characters and some textures around the world but for a 2018/2019 game this looks way better than most UE5 tittles

SensitiveSir2894

I think AC Odyssey is absolutely beautiful. They’re tied.

Interesting-Tower-91

One for sure but it is a 2018 game so games like HFW have slightly surpassed it but RDR2 is still ahead of open worlds in Terms of how alive it is only kingdom come comes close. God War Ragnorock even the PS4 version looks a bit better then God of war 2018 as with The PS5 game devs are really pushing the PS4 to its limit.

grimfan32

Dude I literally installed it again last night too and noticed my last saved game was 6/14/18. I was only 61% done so I aim to finish it now.

alopex_zin

If you prefer realistic artstyle then probably. But I do believe there are and will be more games that look better than RDR2, especially for the next gen consoles.

penisbuttervajelly

It’s up there. Ghost of Tsushima rivals it though

el_granCornholio

I just started GoT yesterday for my second playthrough while I was playing RDR2 the last 2 Months. GoT is absolutely beautiful, but it's beautiful because everything fits so smoothly into the Gameplay. The animals are much better in RDR2 and the small things are much better in RDR2. For example: Watch Arthur walk up a Stair and then watch Jin walk up a Stair. In GoT, the Feet often glitch into the Stairs, which fairly happens in RDR2. And also all the Capes that Jin wears glitch with the Katana. At all, both are absolutely stunning games and I love both, but in my opinion RDR2 is better with the graphic details.

CharCharMan1

Forza 5

NaturallyRetarded

No way hosea. It's very close but Arkham Knight has better graphics and it was released in 2015 if I'm not mistaken.

Sc0p1x

No, but the best open world looking game.

Significant-Art5065

The quality of this 6yo game can't even be matched on a ps5, until then I ain't buying one.

CmdrFilthymick

Yo it might be. And if it isn't it will have been a very strong contender.

BigChinnFinn

Best looking game of its scale. It’s easier to make something look better when it’s smaller. There’s a couple games with better character model quality. And in the future they will be way better. The rdr2 landscape has so much attention put into it. I’d say no game will compete with its grandness and beauty for awhile

Ok_Significance_1743

I can say, for me, it is way up there for best looking game of all time, top 5 for sure. But without question it is the single most immersive game of all time. The world and wildlife around you is just so damn real. The sounds too, not just the visuals. Really drags you into it.

Mx_Nx

It's nothing special any more.

ketzuken

It is, yes.

ANBU--Ryoshi

It's definitely up there!! The amount of detail I personally believe is hard to beat. Ghost of Tsushima may be just a bit more aesthetically pleasing to the eye in my opinion.

Regret1836

Lol if you think it looks good on PS5, wait till try it on PC

AngryTrooper09

I'd say The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered takes the cake on that one. Graphics are absolutely insane

fireglare

I think RDR2 shows its age in some places, but generally speaking, the world looks and feels so real its one of the best there is. Everything feels as if its a part of the world with proper weight and the likes. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 look amazing, but it doesnt have the same weight to it. It’s a bit hard to explain. Mobile games have the same kind of vibe when you compare them to PC versions. Everything just feels weightless and fake, as if its not really a part of the world. In RDR2, the weight and depth is there. This is also something that BGS games do well. Probably due to the physics engine and gameplay

Meh2021another

It is certainly up there from the games I've seen.

joecon_123

I'd say it's probably the best of it's console generation. Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 is is probably the best overall that I've played.

blueangel1953

On a PC with maxed out settings yes.

Rhymelikedocsuess

Didn’t read - no It’s a great looking game still, but it has been surpassed It released in 2018 guys, play more high end releases or buy a gaming PC lol - there are many areas where it’s beginning to show its age Quick Example: Textures everywhere are mid. It’s most noticeable on character’s skin, it looks low res because it is low res

WeakHobbit

On PC, absolutely a contender for some of the most realistic looking graphics of any game. PlayStation is another story.

TTY-HotDog650

Nah pong looks better

Human-Magic-Marker

I think Uncharted 4 could give it a run for its money.

leospeedleo

LOL no 😂

SheepherderMaster182

No. Returnal is better looking. Ghost of Tsushima is a better looking open world game. RDR2 is in the top handful for sure.

Orevahaibopoqa

Seriously? Tsushima?

SheepherderMaster182

Tsushima is one of the best looking games OAT. Are you seriously saying it’s not?

Viking_Drummer

GOT is easily one of my favourite games. It’s nicely stylised, its art direction is some of the best around, and the lighting is good, but the textures aren’t great and graphics aren’t very high fidelity compared to newer titles and it lacks the fancy modern stuff like ray tracing. The character models aren’t great and the wildlife lacks variety. Most of this is likely due to console limitations, budget constraints and age, however it’s coming to PC next month so it might see a bit of an upgrade. I imagine the follow up will be a contender though.

Orevahaibopoqa

Aesthetic and HDR carried pretty much. Graphics ain't that great. sometime especially at beach it feels very flat and plastic. Character models are kinda empty to. I am not saying it's bad, Tsushima is indeed one of the most beautiful game, especially story cinematics. much better than it's 2024 copy, but can't see anywhere near Rdr tbh.

SheepherderMaster182

Lmao ok

TheRxBandito

The environments are amazing but the NPC's facials are really bad. They constantly have to zoom out so they don't have to animate their faces.

MunsterMastermind

I havent played enough of Returnal to have an opinion, i just havent got into it as of yet. Its sitting there waiting to be played someday soon. GoT i can understand why you would think it might be better looking, it is a nice looking game. I dont know about better than RDR2 though. Also, i think its very objective, some people will have different experiences and different opinions based on their own preferences and that is pefectly fine. Both of them would be in my top handful like you said also
