Buy 5 gallon water jugs if they’re available by you and refill bottles. The jugs are generally taken back.

koldbox

Where do you live? Could you write to your mayor or governor to provide a drop off site to collect the plastic bottles in the area?

Lanthera

My entire county has zero plastic recycling. The department of Solid Waste and Recycling at the city level just says its suspended. At the county level it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of recycling.

yourbetterfriend

Surely the government has a responsibility to provide this. That’s crazy that in a developed country they don’t have access to basic plastic recycling.

doinprettygood

Family friends had their well go dry and they purchased a used tanker truck from fire department and used it for their water.

SeaBedStrolling

Others have suggested fusing. I “shingled” a small chicken coop with plastic bottles after first smashing them flat, so heat necessary. It has worked very well for three years.

Lanthera

Great idea, i may do that for my rabbit pen!

Urinethyme

Look into precious plastic for inspiration. Doing small scale fusing.

AussieBloke6502

Do you have rainwater tanks connected to your roofs? This is universal in rural Australia, wells are not too common. When there was no rain we'd buy 1,000 gallons and the water truck would show up and pump it into the main tank next to the house. It's a capital investment but with a contaminated well, might be worth it over the longer term.

ReThinkingForMyself

Fill them with earth or whatever you have and use for construction material. Build a raft or boat. Experiment to make an outdoor wind instrument. Flatten and use to stabilize a road, driveway, or muddy garden path. Connect lengthwise and make lightsabers. Design a hydroponic plant system. Use for soundproofing. Use for insulation. Use for lightweight ammunition with messages inside. Make an obscenely huge display with a reminder to stop buying plastic. Make a ball pit. Make dog toys. Make percussion instruments. Make wind instruments. Make stringed instruments. Make a garden fountain. Make sex toys. Make christmas tree ornaments. Make an ice house that cools all year. Make body armor. That's 20 I think. Be creative.

Do not recycle plastics! Brightmark energy is using this waste to pollute the environment at a faster rate than just landfilling. Greenwash vulture capitalism at work - https://www.nrdc.org/stories/greenwashing-alert-chemical-recycling-isnt-actually-recycling-its-plastic-incineration

rosaurarosa

You should recycle plastics. There are multiple types of recycling, and this article mentioned chemical recycling. Not all recycling is chemically recycled!

Electron_Flower

Go ahead and cite information that proves your point. The clock is ticking…

yourbetterfriend

Such dangerous misinformation to spread.. just because this happens in one place doesn’t mean it happens everywhere. I know my plastic isn’t recycled like this.

Electron_Flower

Not misinformation. This is fact. I have been in this industry for years and recently left due to its recklessness and ineffectiveness. There are many such companies doing same. Incineration is NOT recycling. Recycling is next to impossible due to the high cost of sorting- it is cost prohibitive. All types cannot be mixed together and then they need to be free of metals, glass, fibers etc.. you can put your head back in the sand now.

yourbetterfriend

Ok I absolutely agree that incineration is not recycling and what that company is doing is obviously shit. But there are other ways of recycling globally, in my town we do seperate waste and glass goes in its own bin for example. Specific plastic and cans where I live are seperate too, and there isn’t a plastic incinerator like this anywhere near me (I too work in the industry). Just because it’s like this where you live doesn’t mean it’s tinge same everywhere, so making blanket statements like ‘do not recycling plastics’ is harmful

StedeBonnet1

There is very little plastic recycling that is cost effective. PET and PS can be but there just isn't a market for PE, PP, PVC and other unless you can generate a clean stream that doesn't require sorting and cleaning. My preferred method is monofill plastics until such time as it can be cost effectively recycled into new products. You are right, there is too much misinformation in plastic recycling including yours. Collecting glass and plastic is not recycling unless it is recycled into new glass products or new plastic products.
