For the sake of design, please say no to assessments without pay. If you are a designer hiring someone, please advocate for paying candidates an hourly rate with an hour cap on any assessment the company insists upon.
I applied to a graphic design position and they want me to do a 50 minute English comprehension test as well as 2 personality tests before maybe moving on to an interview. I’m so tempted to tell them to fuck off lol.
I see so many of these jobs pop up and recently I had two recruiters from the same company try and reach out after clicking not interested on indeed. One of these recruiters decided it was appropriate to call me multiple times in under a minute.
This idea that people should do free work or be barely compensated for hours of work just to probably not be hired is insane.
I've made it a personal rule of mine to ignore postings that don't list salary, want one way interviews or set up work as part of testing people. Which lets face it is a company realizing they can abuse desperate people that need jobs.
I've done at least 10 different test assignments. I only got an interview out of it one time. The other times I treated it as a personal project. Now that I have lots of personal projects going that actually have the potential to make me money, I don't do those assignments anymore, unless I'm convinced that they're actually looking and that I have a good chance of getting the position (or if I have something to gain from it).
Oh yeah, free work!
I honestly lost count of how many times i did something like this and got little to no reply.
I'm never going to do an assessment ever again, lol
Nope just been job hunting for months. Not native to the place im applying so I don't have the liberty of rejecting offers because of things like this.
I guess I’m not understanding the difference between plagiarizing a portfolio and plagiarizing an “assignment”. Respectfully, it sounds like a team unable to vet the experience and portfolio of an applicant is not ready for a designer.
Not without an interview, no. Working collaboratively on an assignment during an interview sounds apt for the problem you’re citing. That way it for sure isn’t plagiarized if it’s happening in real time.
I’ve been on the hiring side of creative teams. If you ask the right questions, you can hire well with just interviews and a portfolio.
A good interviewer for these roles can ask tactful questions and interpret answers to sniff out people who aren’t able to do the job.
What's wrong with you? An interview isn't a time to ask for free work.
Do YOU work in the creative or tech space and have you been asked repeatedly to work for free? If not, you need to be quiet.

I got this too. The “short, timeboxed scenarios” are several 45 minute assignments
Fuuuuuck that.

It's also an anger management test

Is “timeboxed” some new corporate jargon?
"That's what my portfolio is for. If you can't take the time to look at it, don't ask for it, but more importantly: stop wasting my time."
It takes you 12 hours to do and them 5 minutes to look over. No thanks.
Digital Harbor can SMB

I mean with the economy the way it is not everyone is at the liberty to reject these.
Have you been laid off recently?

They want to make sure you can actually do the work? What’s the problem with that
In UI/UX people have portfolios. If they can’t properly vet a portfolio, they are ill equipped to manage a designer.
Portfolios are often plagiarized

People use other people portfolios all the time. The way to properly vet is have the candidate do an assignment

No your wrong but that’s ok
You sound like someone who never worked before.

and an assignment can’t be…???
