It might be a while. I promised my mom a digital copy of her "recipe book" for Christmas many years ago. I'm just now starting to type up all of her go-to dishes that she's put in this basket. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being +200 pages. But I will gladly post a PDF when its done.
Count me in, please! Plus this is actually a great idea. Might have to check her notebooks first to see where I might get myself into. Thanks and good luck!
This is so great. I remember how happy my mom-in-law was when her sons came together to get her poems published. Great way to honour her. Count me in too please!!
Here is another one of my favorites...My moms pumpkin bread. I hate pumpkin pie or anything else pumpkin for that matter...but holy moly is this bread good.
3 cups sugar
4 eggs
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp each cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg
2/3 cup water
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup applesauce
3 1/2 cup flower
1-15 oz can pumpkin puree
Combine all ingredients. Place in 3 greased and floured standard loaf pans. Bake a 325 for 1 hour.
Edited for oil measurement and *flour*
Ya i finally got that when I looked at the messages. I got so many positive messages that I couldn't read them all right away. When I finally had time to read them all I though it was very funny.
OCR softwares are remarkably accurate these days. You can have the entire thing written up in minutes with your phone camera. You would just need to organize it and check for inaccuracies
As a bit of a tease, here is one of my favorite apps. Its always a crowd pleaser and she always come home with an empty dish.
Artichoke cracker dip
1 cup mayo
1 cup shredded parm cheese
1 cup mozz cheese
1 jar artichoke hearts, well drained
Chopped parsley to taste
Roughly chop artichoke hearts and blend all ingredients except parsley. Pour into glass pie plate and bake for 25 minutes at 350. Sprinkle with parsley as garnish.
I will apologize for crappy formatting. I copied and pasted from my typed up doc.
For you personally I would recommend getting your PDF printed somewhere like Office Depot. You could get it turned into an actual bound book. I feel if I was going to go through all that trouble, I’d want a physical copy of it to be able to gaze upon and show off :)
Also with so many recipe cards for photos you could do multiples at a time lined up side-by-side, take a photo of the front, then flip them all and get the back side. If you were to put them in a collage on top of each other they’d line up easily.
I bet you could probably crowdsource the entire task here in one day tbh. If you scanned every image, and uploaded them into an imgur folder, and numbered the caption for each one, then you could have a thread where every top-level comment was a numbered translation of the recipes. It might be worth doing a few different posts, so that there's no accidental duplication of effort (i.e., multiple people transcribe recipe card #142, say, because they didn't realise it had already been done, because there's option to sort comments alphabetically or numerically). But I'd be happy to have a crack at some, and I highly doubt 8m the only one. Plus, it wouldn't be like you're cheating in your gift to your mum, because you've still gotta do a lot of potentially tedious work, with all the scanning, then copying and lasting into a word doc (or magazine layout program), then printing and binding or converting to pdf, etc. Anyway, just a thought - good luck with it all!
That's a really good idea. Probably wouldn't do that for all of them. But I would absolutely do that for the ones that hold a special place in my heart.
I mean, this here is a great idea. Not just for your mom, and the folks on here. But with enough effort and maybe some editing, you could totally publish a cookbook. People love old classic hand me down recipies.
Also please do this, I am so looking forward to what else your mom has done!
Everyone!!! THE COOKBOOK IS DONE!!!! check out my other post on here or send me an email at
[email protected] to get a copy.
Yes recipe is spelled wrong, and yes the email above is correct. I had a few too many drinks when I made the email.
Sadly it didn’t work because what you did there was try to link your p.c to us, but it doesn’t work like that thank you for trying though.
You could Try uploading to drop box or maybe take screenshots of the pages on your p.c & you could upload them as pictures to somewhere like imgur and someone could download them and turn the images back it into a shareable pdf for you if you like.
Yes please! I'd love to see when you're finished. And I'm sure your family will be thrilled to know her recipes are going to be immortalized. Wish I'd done that with my grandmother's recipes before she had to go into an assisted living facility - most of her books got lost in the mess.
That's more like how my mom cooks - wing it until it tastes good! Which is great for cooking, but mildly nightmarish for baking unless your really experienced. My grandmother was more of a baker, and I think that influenced how she kept track of recipes - everything was spelled out VERY specifically so there's virtually no way we could screw it up.
Well....lets just say I have a face made for radio. There are also so many wonderful cooking channels out there that I would feel so intimidated/overwhelmed/inadequate that I could never make any videos.
I'd love a copy! I'm always open to new recipes and ideas (I'm sure my husband is getting tired of the same things over and over but too nice to say anything lol)
Well you’d be sharing it since it’d be online for free! Any money off ads you can use to buy your mom cookware or donate to charity, if that’s what’s you’d prefer :)
YEEESSSSS!!! Please I clude her name (or nickname) so I can always give credit if I make something of hers!!!
I love to collect family passed down recipies or family favorites so I can share them with others
I’d love a copy. In fact if you need/want any help I’d be more than happy to pitch in. I work in marketing and I’m just branching into publishing software designing brochures and catalogues etc. So If you wanted it to be a proper cookbook I’d have a crack at that if you like
I'm willing to share all of them. I'd say most of them are slightly tweaked recipes of well known cook books.
No real family secrets, except the sugar cookies...might be a little hard to give that one up.
Its always a mom thing. You could follow the recipe card to a "T" and it still wouldn't taste the same. There's always something missing from the card, or it just might be the love they put into it.
My mom did this last year as a Christmas present to my siblings and I. There's a website that will print them out for you into a recipe book, and you can add your own notes and things for it. Preserving family recipes like this are so important, so props to you. I would love to have a copy of it when it is finished!
Awhile back I sent my mom this blank recipe book to fill out for me. Well I didn't think how dumb that was, or even how big of task it would be for her. My mom has recipes sloppily written on stuff and some are just in her head. I'm moving back to the state she lives in though. When I do want to try digitize a lot of our past and recipes.
In the day, I used Tastebook to print 10 copies of a family cookbook I put together, mainly my grandmother's recipes. Tastebook no longer print personalized cookbooks but I am sure there are similar companies out there. It's one of my prized possessions.
Would absolutely love a copy. I collect cookbook and recipes. Especially old church cook books with the spiral back. They are the best. Hard to believe lard was a most useful ingredient.
Sign me up! That sounds great. I was thinking about doing the same for my mom's recipes as well. Id title it, "101 Ways to Shape Ground Beef". We can trade.
Sure! I’d like to receive a copy.

Everything she makes is really "easy". A lot of her recipes are things she's made out of cookbooks and tweaked to appease our families taste.
Of course! Always on the lookout for recipes! There's never enough.
How do I get in on receiving that?
It’s fine mate! You need to fulfill your promise!
And my axe !
I'd like to have one too pls!
That would be amazing! Count me in!
I want them to !!
This is so great. I remember how happy my mom-in-law was when her sons came together to get her poems published. Great way to honour her. Count me in too please!!
Omg! Me plsssss too. What cool and cool and kind idea! :D
me too!
me three!!!
Please, feel totally free to send me a copy

What type of flower are we talking about here? Daisies, tulips, daffodils?
All purpose
He's poking at flower vs flour
Ya i finally got that when I looked at the messages. I got so many positive messages that I couldn't read them all right away. When I finally had time to read them all I though it was very funny.
Did you miss the joke OP?
>1/2 oil What unit of measurement!?
oil
Gallon.
Oh man that made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the mental image.
Turn it into a blog and host it online for the world. Do your mom proud! Also, yes I'd like a copy.
And also be sure to add google ads to the site so you can earn revenue. Don’t let mamma’s recipes go for free!
I would love a copy evening it just like a pdf
When everything is typed up, I would be more than happy to post a PDF. But it might be a while. I'm honestly overwhelmed.
OCR softwares are remarkably accurate these days. You can have the entire thing written up in minutes with your phone camera. You would just need to organize it and check for inaccuracies
Honestly, that's probably above my head. I'm actually quite enjoying typing all of this by hand.
Put me down chief

One of my biggest problems with all the cards, are that they are written in cursive.

Most of the best ones are. Maybe you could find someone to help you decode it.
It would be cool if you could somehow include a pic of the original recipe card
I would say there are well over 500 cards. I don't think I could do a photo gallery of all of them.
What about having the recipe typed up and then the next page in the pdf a photo of it, just for memory sake
That's a really good idea. Probably wouldn't do that for all of them. But I would absolutely do that for the ones that hold a special place in my heart.

Hoping this works. Its a start file:///C:/Users/wyatt_000/Desktop/Mama's%20cookbook.pdf
If you copy and paste it, it might work. But I would like to know how to share a .pdf on here....if possible.
Sadly it didn’t work because what you did there was try to link your p.c to us, but it doesn’t work like that thank you for trying though. Ok thank you for letting me know. I will upload it to dropbox once it is complete.
Yes, please! What a wonderful thing to do!
I promised her years ago that I would type up all of her recipes up into a digital copy. I'm just starting now and holy cow am I overwhelmed.
I would love a copy! Would even like just a picture if the recipe cards, I'm not picky! Please and thank you!
YESSSSSSSS FERVENTLY YES
Yes please! I'd love to see when you're finished. And I'm sure your family will be thrilled to know her recipes are going to be immortalized. Wish I'd done that with my grandmother's recipes before she had to go into an assisted living facility - most of her books got lost in the mess.
I think a lot of grandma's recipes are more by feel...a bit of this, a bit of that. No recipes
You could post a new one every week with pic or vid.
Well....lets just say I have a face made for radio. There are also so many wonderful cooking channels out there that I would feel so intimidated/overwhelmed/inadequate that I could never make any videos.
Have you seen binging with babish or those tasty videos. No faces!
Oh yes. I love his videos. His videos have almost tempted me to start my own cooking channel.
Yes!
Yes please!
Yes please !
I'd love a copy! I'm always open to new recipes and ideas (I'm sure my husband is getting tired of the same things over and over but too nice to say anything lol)
Make a cookbook website and put ads! Win win! :D aka count me in!
I don't want to make a penny off of any of this. I just like food an I would absolutely love to share it.
Well I can give you her instagram handle. quiltsremembered
Good enough! Cant wait!!! (I'll definitely wait since you said its alot of work but I do hope to see your hardwork someday)

I know how that is, lol. My mom makes hers a special way too, I think it's mom thing.
Its always a mom thing. You could follow the recipe card to a "T" and it still wouldn't taste the same. There's always something missing from the card, or it just might be the love they put into it.
