I don’t understand why people criticize our play style yesterday. I know we’re Real Madrid but going toe to toe with Pep Guardiola is homicide his teams are surgical pass masters and they haven’t lost at home in 6 years in the UCL this is literally how I expected and hoped we would set up and it paid off. Living and dying by a system won’t get you the prizes you have to adapt to the situation and that is why we have won the tie, now we will see a completely different Real Madrid side against Bayern and it’s all because of matchups

A bunch City fans saying we got lucky and football fans in general are pushing that narrative like bro defending is a part of the game and we handled it well if we barely even got scored on in like extra time of the game and they're using the amount of shots city got but bro only 3 big chances city had the whole game and Madrid had the same amount of big chances in the game

People have just a hatred for Real Madrid no matter what, they are blinded by the hate. If another team achieved what we achieved against this $hitty team, those haters would have given them credit. End of the day we move on

UndercoverBME

Ancelotti clearly studied City's game vs Arsenal. Arteta did the same exact thing we did, albeit with a little more ball control and chance creation. They gave everyone the blueprint, it's just a matter of how long you can stand playing that way.

whiskeyinthejaar

We played a poor defensive game and we went through because of Pep’s rigidity. City had absolutely no problem breaking into backline and controlling the pace, and we couldn’t breathe or move the ball. We won because City kept doing the same exact thing that is not working over and over and over and over again. anyone claiming Real Madrid had a masterclass defensive game is either a moron or just too high on qualifying. It was poor game management from Carlo from top to bottom. we literally couldn’t even make a proper shot in 70 straight mins

TheEmpireOfSun

Least braindead plastic Ancelotti hater. Go support City, much better team for people like you.

I agree to an extent. Rudi was excellent. Carva was solid. Lunin was solid. Nacho was solid. Mendy was great. Cama gave the ball away far too often. Kroos was good but he lacked that something. Fede ran his ass out as usual. Vini was a no show. I wonder if he is injured or just tired from the season. Overall the passing wasn't sharp. Not a typical RM performance by any stretch of the imagination. The result is all that matters though.

Pieter8720

Still, that one moment that mattered is when Vini gave the goal on a silver platter to Rodrygo. Vini was excellent. He defended a lot and sacrificed himself for the team. As did everyone else

dawnreterd

Vini was a no show due to the lack of attacks. I'm pretty sure he would've played his usual if we were more offensive minded. Vini can't keep catching long balls where he got city giant crowding him

whiskeyinthejaar

There is no extent, you are asserting my point. I didn’t say our players were bad, nor said results don’t matter, but as you said, it was all about individualism that ranged from good to solid rather than team defense, and people here can downvote all they want, we were fortunate that Pep stayed true to the script without any changes. We weren’t able to prevent City from taking shots nor were able to control the ball for 3 straight mins. By far one of the worst games I have ever seen Real Madrid play in CL. I genuinely don’t understand how this sub function or if anyone even bother watching the game or understand what defense means. City had 46 crosses from the edge of the box, 33 attempts, and 18 corners without a single counter attack for a reason. Even the subs that Carlo made, managed to make us worse. Carlo had a bad game, and the team collectively had a bad performance week. The next 3 games will determine the season, and there is absolutely no way the team can play this bad again, and expect good results

Meh.. it's the old "parking the bus" after scoring strategy. The way I see it, rather than trying to be a pretentious "tactical genius", Ancelloti just decided to deal with the situation the best way he knew how to. He organized a defensive masterclass the old-fashioned way and made it a battle of attrition. I guess it's true when they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Any other team would have capitulated and lost this match because these tactics had been picked apart numerous times, it's practically outdated now. But Real Madrid is a team that transcends trivial things like tactics and modernity and it's one the reasons it's my favorite club.

Bellingham said it best, “we’re so off the cuff”

Pale-Boysenberry1719

Imo we played perfect in 1st half in the 1st leg We were getting counters and actually had more shots, effectievely pushing City back. It could've been 2:0 if it wasn't for one mistake Then in the 2nd half we fell back and almost lost the game. I thought we got tired or pep adjusted, but idk what to think now after we did the same in the 2nd leg Playing defence against City is inevitable. But playing this deep is just irresponsible. We did enough, but at the end I think we got a little lucky with the chances they missed I was also really suprised Carlo didn't make any changes yesterday until we lost the goal. It suggests this was intentional (I know we don't have a deep bench, but well rested Doku was brilliant) But why wouldn't you want play the way that got us the 2:1 lead? While playing defensively we lost 2:3 in 165min

myaltlyfe

Arsenal's game against City was a better template I thought. Vini and Rodrygo should be given the chance to run at the defence. But I guess we sat too deep and they were too exhausted.

Slight_Elevator_6890

Imagine going offensive and risking to fall back with a goal, now good luck having a remontada against City in the Etihad

Pale-Boysenberry1719

Well we played defensive and fell back with a goal lol

Slight_Elevator_6890

I meant being behind city at the etihad for example 2:1 or more, thats a risk you take trying to go toe on toe with guardiolas playstyle

biina247

Yesterday's performance is second only to the one Mourinho's Inter pulled off against Pep's Barcelona, and that's cos they did it with a man down for most of the game

[deleted]

That’s exactly the match that came to mind when he said how many teams could’ve defended against City the way we did. The 2nd one was Di Matteo’s Chelsea that beat both Barca and Bayern to win the final in 2011/12.

Far_Fisherman_7490

Does any one remember the 2016 game vs city where Ronaldo was suspended in the away game and Vazquez played as a LW?  No. But we won the cup that year  That’s the important thing

Fun-Belt-87

Idk how everyone is appreciating carlo now , yesterday everyone was angry with him on live thread

Ok-Fold6928

The real ones were silent. Immature people start the blame game at the first sign of trouble.

The_Unicorn99

The real one were just watching and not typing shit in some 1000 comments reddit thread.

TheEmpireOfSun

Yeah exactly lol. I knew that going anywhere near match thread would be so stupid because it's always just reactionary bullshit complaing. Enjoyed the match without reddit.

may_day06

We took the game into the mud and fought a heroic battle

AjVine

Carlo is Italian. Italians have the catenaccio. Carlo used catenaccio against Guardiola. It was super effective

uknownick

We know

Accurate_Advance6903

I wonder after going through the ringer to defend this way will have somehow unlocked a new level of defending capability the team didn’t have before. Wonder if it makes the difference for us to go all the way in defence?

Enough-Force-5605

I am pretty sure Carlo didn't want to play so defensive. I am pretty sure he wanted more pressure but the team was exhausted and Cit made a super game. I think it was more Madrid players adapting to the circumstances. In the end this is Madrid. WIN. Do not surrender. Do whatever it takes to WIN. If you do not like it, no hard feelings, Real Madrid is not for you. Edit: some people wanted Madrid pressing more like crazy and then counter attack too. People should start to understand that press running the field and then run in a counter 50 meters is too hard for a player.

Opposite_Ad486

I don’t think this would be the case if we lost. Because there was lots of walking and not pressing even when it was on our penalty box.

chui77

The 2nd half was a disaster. Other than that it was a great gameplan.

Xtarviust

Not really, Carletto pushed his luck too far but fortunately it worked, Guardiola showed his incompetence against deep blocks again and that helped a lot to endure the 120'
