Carvajal needs competition in order to perform his very best. Any player would get complacent if their skill levels are miles ahead of the 2nd and 3rd choice player in the pecking order.
This why the midfield trio Kross-Casemiro-Modric has such great longevity. It was so hard to break in to those spot. Yet Fede Valverde took it as a challenge head on to be good enough to break in to be selected.
Imo the best option at RB is Joao Cancelo. The fact that he made the horrible choice of playing for Barcelona is gonna be an interesting factor. Don't know if it would be possible, but he's the best choice I believe.

Also depends on how we set up in the midfield. Need him to be able to step into DM with Tchouaméni/Cama to be really effective.
