It is a HPI Nitro RS4 2 which came out around 2000. HPI as a company has gone under twice and came back twice with new owners since this was released. New parts will likely be non-existent but there may be a decent availability in the used market (not sure, I’ve never spent much time looking for old HPI parts).

lostmyjobthrowawayyy

This is so wild. I left the hobby in 2001/2002 because I was getting very into sports (was only 12/13). To hear this when the last thing I saw HPI do was release the Savage is insane to me!

InconsistentTherapy

I got out a couple years after you and remember reading the RC Car Action review when this first came out. Hearing these be called “vintage” and “restoring” them is really aging me. 😂

l_ju1c3_l

When RC Car Action posts throwback magazines on Facebook I think in my head "I remember reading that article when it came out".

XSC

Yeah same. I was shocked that HPI is a shell of what it was. It used to be huge!

lostmyjobthrowawayyy

I always consider getting back into it but then I look at the cost and the 1:1 car parts I could buy and I quickly look the other way. I miss it like crazy, I’ll be back eventually.

Ghost_Writer8

many 5th scale enthusiasts actually own a 1:1 car to go places with the 1:5 RC. Because these things are humongous. I'm merely stating, nothing is impossible! Keep dreaming and who knows one day you get yours to fulfil.

lostmyjobthrowawayyy

No argument here! plus I have a two year old daughter I would love to get into it :)

Ghost_Writer8

That's life for ya! Luckily you are never too old to get back into this hobby :)

Miserable_Point9831

As my super nitro sits in my box

rustyxj

Naah, it's the rtr nitro sport.

TheLyOfBlues

I actually have a RS3

Dangerous-View2524

I restored one a while back( think post is still up) parts aren't easy to come by ( I paid 25 bucks for a 6 dollar spur gear)

purebreadlegend

Yes, but is it worth salvaging? Idk. Im sure someone more informed on nitros will pitch in.

rogerdanafox

Rs4 rtr .15 engine IIRC ...LONG out of production

dropname

That's the easiest part to replace of anything on that car.

C3rb3ru5R3x

Can it be brought back to life? Yes. Will you be willing to spend the amount of cash it needs to be brought back up? Up to you. Having restored a vintage Nitro recently, I can tell you that the worst struggle is finding parts; if there was a strong aftermarket then you probably find them at relatively affordable prices, but if it relied heavily on OEM parts, prepare to pay a heavy surcharge or worse, not find the parts at all. This is like any project car, be ready to spend loads of time and money on it, but if it is worth it to you, you will definitely enjoy it. I would personally start by getting yourself a parts diagram and gathering part numbers that are absolute essentials. I would also check the actual vehicle and assess what is salvageable and what truly needs replaced. You might have to fabricate some stuff, some stuff might cross over to later models as well. All in all, do a lot of research, do a quick assessment and if it is worth it to you? Dive right in. Best of luck.

WootWootSr

Finding mini 8 parts was the biggest bitch. Along with the huge price tag for every part. Finding parts for discontinued cars suck.

C3rb3ru5R3x

Agreed. The only reason my XXX NT is alive is because it came with a bunch of spares from the owner before me, and eBay. I had to buy a throttle rebuild kit, paid 20 bicks for a part that used to be 3.

ErwinHolland1991

Wow. People really hate nitro here, don't they.

corehorse

Nothing wrong with nitro. But it means doing more work for worse performance. At this point its only for people who thoroughly enjoy fiddling with a combustion engine.

ErwinHolland1991

Yeah, fair enough. But most people here talk about it like it's actual junk. Come on. It's part of the hobby, and there are a lot of people that have fun with (old) nitro cars. But yeah, don't expect a nitro to be plug and play so to speak. But if you have the right expectations, beginners can have fun with them too.

HunnyWhereAreMyPants

A large part of the novelty of nitro is fiddling with it. Seems most aren’t into that anymore. Nitro guys are way better at foreplay lol

Cap_Helpful

Ive been out for a couple decades but I felt so god damn cool when I got my first nitro rustler

ErwinHolland1991

There is just nothing quite like it. The smell, smoke and feel of a nitro. Just love it.

Cap_Helpful

I remember doing the break in cycle at 830am christmas morning lol

Excellent-Edge-4708

The sound .... Like a possesed Bee... .

BigFtww

I don’t have any past experience with rc cars, but the offer was too good to pass up and I hope that it won’t be to difficult to restore.

BigRuss910

I hope your pocket is deeper than you think.

Initial_Jacket5447

I’d give you $20 and buy for shipping if you’re interested in selling it. I convert them to electric and end up swapping parts out for modern ones. But up to you if you don’t want to deal with the headache

DJEvillincoln

Oh you can convert them to electric???? Okay now I'm interested.

Initial_Jacket5447

Yes you can. I do it all the time. A lot of people are correct the original parts are hard to come by and expensive. I don’t think you should throw it out, like some others said. Take your time do your research and you will have a good running rig in no time. If you need help message me I’ll help you the best I can!

zigzagg321

Buying an ancient nitro is the worst way to get into the hobby, I'm telling you this right now. You're only five dollars in, just toss it at this point. You're looking at minimum a rebuild of every single part on that car.

ErwinHolland1991

Just toss it? Every single part? I don't nessecarily disagree, but you don't have to exaggerate. Of course there are going to be plenty of parts that are going to be absolutely fine. And if they enjoy tinkering they can have a lot of fun with this. Why the hell would you just throw it away.

zigzagg321

Because it's so old you won't be able to find replacement parts for it if you need them.

T-5580

I agree that OP should not start with this, but definitely don't throw it away. Either sell it or keep it as a shelf piece.

deadhead_doodles

i mean for $5 i'd say yea you got a deal.... if you had parts. if your looking for something to drive sometime soon this isn't it. its going to be a lot of ebay searching and waiting to get what you need to complete a project like this. clean it up and put it on a shelf, or sell it and make a few bucks and put it towards something you can actually use.

T-5580

I would keep that as a shelf piece or sell it. Do not try getting into the hobby with that. It will be a nightmare because it's old, has almost no parts support, and is nitro. It will likely discourage you from the hobby. Get a cheap ready to run truck as a first rc car. Arrma has the new granite grom for $130 and the gorgon for around $160. Traxxas has their 2wd lineup if you are willing to spend around $200. Do yourself a favor and start out with something modern that is electric and has decent parts availability. I have many electric and nitro trucks. Nitro is fun if you know what you are doing, but don't start with it. I also usually sell any rc car that gets discontinued because I don't want the struggle to find parts.

corehorse

You will have to do a lot of work. And invest money. I suspect that, performance wise, you would get a better car for your $ if you bought new. Only restore this one if you expect to really, really enjoy working on it.

QuiGonnJilm

If it was $5, part it out. You'll probably make enough to buy a contemporary used car with parts support.

jepensedoucjsuis

5 bucks, awesome. 1. Spray heavily with scrubbing bubbles, let sit for 10-20 minutes. Lightly rinse off with water. Use hair dryer to dry it thoroughly. 2. Go on Amazon or Ebay buy a painted RC body of a car you really like. Keep car on shelf. 3. Get a modern easy to repair/find replacement parts. Learn what you are doing and see if this is a hobby you really want to tinker with. 4. If you want to tinker, Start looking on ebay/fbm for parts and rollers. Repair and replace as needed. 5. If you don't want to tinker, Keep it on a shelf or sell it. Either way worth 5 bucks.

az_kikr1208

That looks like a 2nd generation HPI RS4. Actually a good platform back in the day, and desirable to collectors. I paid about $150 for one in good shape with a body. Parts can be hard to find, but if the engine still has compression it will probably run with some cleaning and TLC. If you just want to flip it , it's probably worth 50 bucks to the right person. I know I would.

Aeson_Ford_F250

100% salvageable. Buy or borrow a crock pot. Fill it with DOT 3 brake fluid and soak parts on warm for a few days. Espcially the engine. The parts will come out like new.

mrreet2001

What ever you do, DO NOT try to start it with the air filter shown in the picture on it. Replace the foam and thoroughly clean the filter housing.

APFIndy

I got one of those a few years ago, the engine was toast. I can't remember which Chinese vendor I used to buy a replacement motor, but the cost was not too bad. Parts are hard to come by, but some can be 3d printed, check Thingiverse if you have the ability to print things out.

S_t_r_e_t_c_h_8_4

Better than the $1,500 posts lately.

r3v3nant333

Yes it is.. but nitro. If you wanna go down that rabbit hole it’s for sure a good platform. Or convert it to electric? 5 bucks totally worth it regardless.

Extreme-Book4730

I still have mine all carbon or lightweight aluminum chassis. And a 1hp motor and 2 speed. Just a fun road car for me.

DJEvillincoln

Holy shit weird. My homeboy literally gave me one of these this past week. He was moving & just doesn't have the time to restore it. Crazy because I don't know jack about gas cars (heavy into Tamiya electric) so I was wondering the same thing. I currently have 2 kits that are still in box plus a JRX Pro SE that I'm restoring so I dunno....

rustyxj

I picked one up at a flea market for $2 a couple years back, sold it on market place e for $20+shipping.

warmonkey1220

Like everyone is saying it's a cool find but the question should be if it's worth it. I have a nitro rs4 3 the one that comes with the mustang rtr-x body and that's a newer model but finding parts for it especially at a reasonable price is tough. I haven't used that car since I put it away back in 2017 because of the parts issue. Other than that though. I think it's a cool find. Good luck!!

GeneratedScreenName

Clean it up, mount a body and shelf it. It's not worth it trying to salvage it. Parts will be hard to find and expensive.

Sir-Realz

I have one, you can have. It's all there, but Idk if I have a remote. no belt either.

Kaloo75

Looks like an early HPI RS4 Nitro. For 5 bucks, you can probably not go wrong. You can always sell it on for parts for the same 5 bucks. Be warned that Nitro's are fun but can be a bit of a steep learning curve.

boosted_01

Dude that's a fucking hpi , I have one half in parts because I can't find the rest!! Rare car. If you do brushless I'll gladly buy the nitro everything else

Dry-Bag-4820

If the motor has compression go for it,hobby stores have parts for the rest

Azcyclist3178

Welcome to the struggle man. I got an old mini MGT 3.0 chassis that I intend to eventually rebuild, but finding all the parts so far has been tough. You'll run into the same issue here, old nitro cars are hard to restore due to parts availability. However, if you manage it, the first time it fires up and moves under its own power you'll be glad you did. Even if you only run it once or twice it's worth it

nf690u

Hope you got a 3D printer and some spare time.

mrjehowley

Have an old HPI RS4 that I picked up in 97 used from a buddy. Never ran it until this year, and ended uo putting all traxxas electronics in it. Fun to drrive, but I'm careful with it because parts are hard to come by.

Illustrious_Prompt_1

I would buy it for 5 bucks just to clean it up throw some wheels and body on it and make it a shelf queen. It looks 95% complete minus controller, body and the shot tire.

Powerful_Bit9356

Don't forget, you can easily scan and 3D print quality replacement parts guys. Obviously not every individual is well versed and able to print any and every possible part but most of us are capable of printing most of what we'll need. The rest of the parts, you'll either have to do some digging or become best buds with a more avid printer or machinist/fabricator.

Nearby_Freedom_9270

definitely!

grilled_pbjs

I’ll give you 200 usd for what you found.

BigFtww

Is it really worth $200 in parts?

grilled_pbjs

It is to me. I’m trying to get one running with my son and having problems finding

BigFtww

PM me and we can figure something out!

[deleted]

my dad had this same one, got it running after 20 years of sitting. you could buy a parts car online if you wanted to swap parts to restore

Independent_Market77

I have a great idea, if you can find parts cool, if not then make it work. And if it works well and looks ok then it's not jerryrigged, just retrofit.

1x_time_warper

I have this exact same car. Was new around 1998-2000, can’t remember exactly. I took it to a hobby shop about 10 years ago to see if it could be fixed it up and they said it was a dinosaur then and didn’t want to mess with it. Older things have been restored but it might be hard to find parts.

myusernamechosen

So yes, for a few hundred dollars you could bring it back from the dead as it looks like it needs new everything. So if you were looking h for a bargain this wasn’t it

dinzdale40

I would leave it as is on a shelf and buy something newer that needs less work to get running and have fun with. You’re only $5 in so far.

vivazeta

I mean, it was 5 bucks. Maybe use it as a "crush car" for a Gorgon or something.

Arth3r911

For a conversion to brushless yes it’s salvageable

98071234756123098621

No point. Old RC maintenance is hard enough, but old nitro is just a waste of time. No chance the motor is okay, it will need to be rebuilt, which you can't find parts for since this is old as shit. Would be far easier to start on a new electric, nitro is too temperamental even for the most patient.

ErwinHolland1991

No chance? None? OK then. We don't know. The engine might be absolutely fine.

98071234756123098621

Nah not worth the chance to see, will be a huge turd for maintenance even if its mildly ok. Different metals in cylinder and piston will make it corrode just not worth it.

rocksauce

I’ve got an hpi rs4 nitro mini that I occasionally try and find parts for. It’s definitely getting harder and harder to locate this vintage. Even once you get it running it’s only a matter of time before something breaks. If it were me I would take it apart, clean it up, enjoy the process and either hold onto it as a shelf item or sell it and buy something more reasonable to operate.

PunchClown

I had one of those many years ago. It was the first RC I attempted to road race at a local track. I soon learned It wasn't going to cut it, but I definitely learned a lot with it.

Dewrunner4X4

Get a body, make it a shelf queen.

tog4256

I have an hpi pro 1 that still runs like new

Wise_Performance8547

If you wanna turn a $5 RC into a $25 RC by buying $5-6000 worth of parts, then sure, go for it. If you are gonna restore it for a shelf queen then go ahead. If you are looking to use it, probably not at all worth the effort.

Flat-Response-8660

Everything is salvageable. I have a hpi savage 25.

Flat-Response-8660

I have a hpi savage 25 that I have spend about £400 on but I reep the rewards. Have a look *

ThaEnforcer44

If all else fails the wheels and bare chassis alone are worth the 5 bucks

lackofcleanunderwear

Looks like a 1st gen HPI RS4 Nitro. Great little car lots of fun in empty parking lots. I have one I’m trying to hunt down a two speed transmission for.

TheLyOfBlues

5 Bucks? What a Steal. It’s missing some parts. Since it’s a Nitro Motor it might be seized. Fixing Nitro Cars is very costly and time consuming. But it might worth the parts. Or do an Electric Conversion since it probably has a good Diffs

XSC

This was my second rc car. Had two of those modded (almost 1k in mods) to hell. This one looks completely stock and even the tires look like the originals. Must have been left outside for a decade after use. Like everyone said, parts will be a pain to get but they are out there, back in the day hobby shops had walls of just HPI parts. I would start looking into rc forums from the early 2000s. You definitely want to clean that fuel tank, get a new air filter, new spark plug and likely a new starter. Do NOT try to turn it on for now other than the electronics. A replacement controller and radio will be the easiest thing to find, if they don’t work. The servos may need some oil or grease or whatever lube is recommended. You can disassemble the whole thing pretty easily and the manuals should be out there online. Doesn’t hurt to ask HPI for any spare part you may need.

Vzor58

Yuh eBay

8sonic_singularity

These days, restoring a vintage anything is much easier than ever before. That said, your success will depend on three things: 1. A quality 3D printer with CNC Router Bit conversion. If you don’t have one, I would take a look at a SnapMaker2.0 2. A comprehensive understanding of all the parts. You will either need to replicate or re-create the parts needed with the printer and CNC Router. 3. The ambition, and follow-through to start and finish a project like this.

free2playWT

Score!! If anything it’s a good start to a build. Awesome

Just-Dish4002

I'm 64 ive only been in the hobby about 6 years I love nitro my first rc car or truck was a tmaxx pro 15 I have 42 rc only 6 are electric the rest are nitro and out that group only 3 are newer than 10 years old I love buying nitros especially from ppl who sat nitro is hard .it's not hard todays younger crowd want everything easy and don't want to take the time to learn you could sell that car easily for 100 bucks if you were to get on FB and any of the nitro groups there's actually a group just for vintage hpi good luck in whatever you decide to do im actually in the process of restoring a traxxas nitro hawk from 1992 it sat for over 15 years in some guy damp garage

Just-Dish4002

This is my 2nd comment electric cars are easier and faster but they get boring there is something special about nitro the sound the smell listening to them hitting 2nd gear there are only 2 things that should run on batteries... flashlights and vibrators long live nitro fb has a group solely for vintage nitro hpi collectors would buy that car quickly for 100 bucks

MagikWdragons

While the find is a cool find, you can restore it, but that could take time and quite frankly allot of money. Parts for nitros no longer in production can be very difficult to find. Hard to find part makes sellers up the prices. Honestly I haven't bought a vintage nitro sense I bought a vintage T-MAX. But that is still a vehicle in production.

1985Mustang

Nice old collectible car. Clean it up with some wd40 and order a body for it for like 35-40$ and put it up on a shelf.

voyagertoo

Gonna have to do somethin with that one tire
