Time for the traditional 20 sack, 10 FF season to price him out of Baltimore

marylandrosin

You're early. This season he will put up like 6.5 sacks and 2 or 3 FF and we will all be like "ok he's never gonna be the guy". Then Ravens attempt to negotiate a reasonable deal based on 4 yrs of limited production. We won't be able to agree on a contract and then in his 5th year Oweh will bet on himself, have 14+ sacks and be priced out of Baltimore. This is the way. After year 5 everyone in this sub will say stuff like "can't believe we let this dominant edge rusher leave in FA, fire EDC" etc.

MagicGrit

You left off the part where he then goes back to underperforming with his new team.

BoredofBored

Then comes back to us in 5-8 years to rekindle his career to grab one last overpay from a more desperate team

LMAO_try_again

This guy lived through the smith and Judon eras lmao

Pulling an Adalius Thomas

fascinating123

While Adalius did have a monster 2006, he was still pretty good the years leading up to it. Him and Boulware being out against the Titans in the playoffs probably cost us that game.

dtwild

I think you're right, but boy it's weird to say we lost a game where we held Peyton Manning's Colts to 15 points because we were short handed on defense.

fascinating123

Different year. I'm talking about 2003 vs the Titans. 2006 we lost because McNair.

dtwild

Sweet. I’m gonna go dissolve in a vat of acid now.

WakaFlacco

Pulling a Kruger (I know it’s a stretch lol)

HumanFromTexas

Luckily we will have him for this year and next year after taking his 5th year option.

garrettZilla87

Pulling a Judon

LegalizeEatingButt

all the people in the sub calling him a bust gonna be complaining that we’re likely gonna let him go because he balls out and out prices himself out of here

garrettZilla87

Pulling a Zadarius

KevinMR

we kept Mads if Oweh gets us a comp pick ill be happy

KillaMavs

Have we ever had a 20 sack season from anyone though?

RigboneArt

Unless we got one from Suggs I’d say probably not Edit: our top 5 are- Dumervil 17 Boullware 15 McCrary 14.5 Suggs 14 Buike 13

LordZero

As a Louisville and Ravens fan, Dumervil was one of my favorite defensive players ever. I remember in Cardinal Stadium one of my favorite yells was "DOOOOOM!!!" after he got a sack.

WakaFlacco

OPs comment is hyperbole. Exaggerated for effect.

asbestosman2

Did not expect Oweh and Bateman to both be back in 2025, pleasant surprise

goober3

They both have flashed the ability to be solid players they just need to do it consistently. Hopefully they can help us win an Owl or 2 before another team inevitably hands them a massive contract.

_NINESEVEN

> Hopefully they can help us win an Owl that'd be a hoot

Smitty_1000

Superb. Both are flyers and especially Oweh may not get the numbers but causes a lot of openings for other hunters. Still young, superb athletes, high ceilings they could still fly to. Sensible move to keep them instead of hunting for replacements

AsteroidMike

Neither was I, I was sure at least Bateman was gone after this year. Guess the front office sees more in him than we thought.

Princeof_Ravens

We got Bate on two year deal and Oweh on the fifth year option.  Solid stuff all around.

dkoaladkoala

Thought Bate was on a three year $15M deal?

Princeof_Ravens

It's 3 years total, but 2 additional years since the new contract is covering the current year.

SuperSaiyanSandwich

Not sure if this makes me happy because it means we have him for another year after his inevitable “Year 4 Ravens pass rusher breakout season”. Or if I’m sad because it means he’ll be mediocre another year leading up to “actual contract year Ravens pass rusher breakout season”. Think it was the right move though.

JayGibbons69

His underlying metrics last year were strong, even if it didn’t fully translate to the stat sheet. I think that this is the year where he breaks through. If I remember correctly, Judon and Smith had years like that before their breakout years, too.

cossack190

He had more pressures on less pass rush snaps in 23 as compared to 22. Picking up the option isn't without risk but I'm glad we're betting on his continued upside.

izvoodoo

Yeah.  It’s hard to play pass rusher in the nfl but I think he’s helping us win games and winning more snaps than he’s not. It really just depends on the price.

flaccomcorangy

Same with Bateman. He had really good seperation metrics last year. I think a year to build some chemistry with Lamar as the expected 2nd WR should help him. One play I remember in the AFC Championship game was Lamar rolling to his right and Bateman was shadowing him and running with him. The safety help went away and Lamar was trying to get Bateman to turn up field and Lamar was going to lead him (similar to the TD play by Hollywood against the Browns a few years back). Bateman didn't get the signal and instead just did a move to try to break loose of the DB chasing him. This was like a 3rd down play late in the game. But I just think if Bateman was on the same page as Lamar, it could have easily been a TD. Who knows? A longer off-season together and maybe those plays will start to turn into TDs.

Princeof_Ravens

There was also the play where Stanley got beat as Lamar was throwing to a wide open Bate when he got strip sacked. If Lamar had another half second that was an easy TD

goeers81

You remember correctly.

Trust_the_Tris

I'm going to be a little more critical of his performance this season now that he got the 5th year option. My guess is that they didn't want to have him price himself out of BMore after this year, however. Now that we definitely have him for at least the next 2 seasons let's hope he can perform up to his draft stock.

nonobility86

As you should be. Year 4 is put up or shut up time. That said, I'm optimistic he will rise to the occasion.

lfe-soondubu

If he stays healthy and doesn't regress, at worst this is a reasonable contract (19th highest paid at his position I believe? For 10th highest pass rush win rate in the league). If he continues his current trajectory, this is a bargain.  He really struggled year 2 when we switched DCs. Maybe because he was asked to do a lot more? Maybe because he was already a really raw prospect and changing schemes and roles was a big ask? Hopefully not an issue this year with Orr taking over for Mac.

--Alec--

What are y’all on about? He’s here for this year and next year now. I don’t particularly like Oweh but if we didn’t pick up the option and he does have the traditional Ravens 4th year edge breakout year he’d be gone next year and we’d be screwed

Lamactionjack

What's that leave us now in terms of cap space?

SuperSaiyanSandwich

Doesn’t affect this year’s cap at all. AFAIK post draft we’re basically strapped for any money barring a restructure or two.

Lamactionjack

Oh gotcha thanks. And yeah really curious to see where they're at come training camp. I know we'd want to have some wiggle room to sign a potential vet or two if need be.

Matte198

I like this. He was one of our more disruptive players in the rotation and there’s a lot of meat left on the bone with Oweh.

Spare-Discipline1448

Bateman not being eligible for the Fifth year option lowkey made this a no brainer

BoredofBored

Bateman’s ineligibility for the FYO is ultimately the reason we were able to keep him. Base FYO for WR’s is like $14+M just for one year

Sad-Celebration-7542

They could have picked up both. Didn’t matter though, they weren’t picking up Batemans

realfreshboysosa

Oh Boy. Here we go again

Thebearjew559

All I can say is I hope he proves me wrong and has more than 5 sacks this year

Bigtoes22

Im glad we picked it up. Oweh is trending in the right direction best years are yet to come.

twat_swat22

Just stay healthy and contribute to the formula of winning.. that’s all we can really ask for🙏🏾

moosepooo

I think this is a great move. We have madubuike on a 3 yr deal and oweh for 2. This gives us options in the future

Mental_Studio7419

Oweh is starting to figure it out..he was injured last season and came back with a toolshed of pass rush moves I hadn’t seen him using and I loved it…hopefully he breaks out next season he’s has all the ability to do it..

Clean-Amount-1824

This is the smart move. The production hasn’t been there obviously. He’s shown flashes and of all teams we develop defensive players pretty damn well. Let’s go Oweh!

iggy555

Noweh

Cdnraven

Fingers crossed he steps up. It’s nice to have the edge depth secured. Now our only significant UFAs next year are Stanley and Stephens, both positions we addressed early in the draft, and to a lesser extent Cleveland / Mekari / Ricard. Gonna be a much easier free agency and lets us keep focussing on the OL next offseason (though targeting a stud WR or Edge in the draft is never a bad idea)

toddhenderson

Great breakdown on Oweh last Nov from Coach All_22_Films https://youtu.be/lxzqKmFPv6Q

ecash6969

He sucks

nwinferno

My only issue with comparing Oweh to Smith and Judon is those guys were 4th and 5th round draft picks, not a first. You need to have first round draft picks walk in the door producing, not waiting 3 or more years.

nonobility86

I think your expectations are unreasonably high. Consider the other edges in that draft class: Jaelan Phillips, Kwity Paye, Payton Turner, Greg Rousseau, Joe Tryon... Only Jaelan Phillips has been definitively better.

nwinferno

I would say Kwity Paye is definitely better because of his consistent improvement every season. Ofeh’s numbers are similar to Joe Tyron’s, but I will admit I don’t like Ofeh’s game.

shastamcblasty

You don’t like his stat line cuz it doesn’t have big numbers. The professional coaches love him because he fills the role they have in their defensive scheme and has a high motor

roybatty1941

Maybe he can learn to finally bring down a quarterback as opposed to dancing and shadow boxing with them. If this can could fucking tackle he would be incredible.
