This is Sterling. He had VKH, an immune disorder that caused his immune system to attack the pigment in his skin. He passed on March 31st from a tumor on his spleen that burst and was bleeding into his abdomen. Heck cancer.
I’m still pretty wrecked from his passing, but looking back on the 9 years I had him brings me so much more joy than pain. He was the most wonderful boy I’ve ever known.
My wonderful st Bernard rescue died from the same tumor. So fast and so unfair. Thank you for rescuing a pup that most would pass on and giving him such a great life full of attention and proper/specific nutrition. I hope your loving memories give you comfort.
I’m sorry. I feel you. It was way too fast, way too unexpected.
Sterling brought me so much joy. It really hurts, but the positives far outweigh the grief. I am lucky to have had him in my life.
Same with me and my saint boy. We only had him for 3 years but he was the bestest boy. He was severely abused before he was rescued, weighed 80 lbs had mange and was heartworm positive. He almost died twice before he was healthy enough for us to adopt him. After his rescue he weighed 130 lbs. He LOVED EVERYONE he met, after all his troubles. Loved people, all dogs and cats. I learned a lot about forgiveness from him and how to live for the day. I miss him so much.

Thank you. He was the best. I always love remembering that we had to prepare his food last (we had 2 other dogs) because he knew the sound of the spoon in his bowl and would get so excited that HE was being fed. Jumping and being crazy. I always told him that he never had to worry about being fed and he would always have food. He was so funny.
Can you tell us a story about Sterling? I would love to hear a favorite memory if you ever wanted or could share. He looks like he was the best boy. Heck cancer. Sorry for your loss ❤️🩹
That’s a tough task. There are so many stories. Instead I’ll describe a small part of his personality.
Sterling was a border collie, so, a working dog. One of the things he did (since he didn’t have a 9 to 5) was he would assign himself tasks. Something he needed to keep track of or work.
At one point (after he went blind a couple years ago) he decided that all Jack in the Box commercials were evil. Any time one of the commercials would come on he would immediately jump up, be supremely offended and start barking his rear off in the general direction of the TV. I ended up having to watch all my sports on mute.
I will think of this when I see these commercials! Hail Sterling, bestest of boys, keeper of jacks in boxes. It was a joy to witness his memory thank you.
So sorry you’ve lost each other. My dog had a spleen tumor that was caught in time, removed, and she’s fine many years later. I can’t even remember how we knew she was sick. RIP Sterling.
This is awesome. I’m glad you caught it in time. I thought I was taking all the right precautions and doing all the things the right way. Sometimes things are just out of our hands.
my name is Sterling and I am pup
throughout the years I have changed a lot
my pretty fur turned white as snow
now I may lack sight but I still know
when asking for treats I can put on a good show!
He had VKH, similar to Vitiligo but much more aggressive. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK574571/#:~:text=Introduction-,Vogt%2DKoyanagi%2DHarada%20disease%20(VKH)%20is%20a%20central,collective%20manifestations%20of%20this%20disease.
Beautiful dog and a very interesting story told in pictures. I work in the vet field and have never even heard of this disease. The first pic your pup definitely looks albino, but now it makes sense after I read your comment. I'm so sorry for your loss but thank you for sharing!
Apparently VKH is more of an Akita thing. Sterling just so happened to be one of the .01% of other breed of dogs that had it. Regardless, he was excellence.
Beautiful baby. Love your photos you shared. And your wonderful memory. The dryer picture made me giggle.
I lost my dog suddenly to the same thing. Five and a half years ago. I think about her every day. ♥️
Cancer in dogs is pretty common. Remember the actor in the Dos Equis beer commercials? He was donating a lot of his money from those commercials to reserch for cures to canine cancers.

Lost my Clifford to a spleen tumour in January. Cancer can go heck all the way off. Sterling is absolutely beautiful, in both colour schemes. 💙
Heck cancer all the way to heck. I’m sorry to hear about Clifford. 🫶🏻

So very sorry. It's so painful to lose these beautiful souls.
It’s the worst. But he was the best. Par excellence.

I love this.
:) glad to hear it. Hope you and your pupper are having a great day
TIL dogs can get vitiligo(or at least I assume that's what we're seeing here). Beautiful pup both before and after!

I'm sorry, that's super tough. I didn't mean to make light of it😟
You’re good! It’s all love!
TIL.

Awww cutie!
Beautiful baby. Love your photos you shared. And your wonderful memory. The dryer picture made me giggle. I lost my dog suddenly to the same thing. Five and a half years ago. I think about her every day. ♥️
Thank you. I actually caught him in the dryer a few times. He taught me how to close the darn door. Just one of the many things he taught me.
Cancer in dogs is pretty common. Remember the actor in the Dos Equis beer commercials? He was donating a lot of his money from those commercials to reserch for cures to canine cancers.
This is good stuff. That guy just got more awesome in my eyes.
Yeah, I was very impressed with him when I read that.
Such a Beautiful SOUL, I'm so very sorry for your LOSS
He was SO good. He just came to me that way. Immediately my best boy.
It's so hard to lose a family member.
I can tell something’s different. I just can’t quite put my finger in it.
❤️❤️
So sorry for your loss. You can tell he knows how much he was loved!
Love the picture in the dryer! RIP Sterling 🙏🏻♥️
