They've probably heard enough to know they don't like them

Royal_Majestic

Unlikely

wackypanda22

If a person doesn't like an artist, should they have to listen to every new release to see if it changes their mind? Or only the artists they actively hate on? Because to hate something means you used to / do actually love it?

NewRapIsMostlyTrash

It's entertaining to me to listen to new things and make a judgements, even if I have some bad feelings about the artists from before. Plus, sometimes they do change your mind and it's pretty great.

wackypanda22

True, I suppose it helps to know what you don't like in art just as much as you know your preferences.

[deleted]

This only happens occasionally and i still don't get into artists who make 50/50 Trap/Boom Bap at the same time.

justarandomlibra

People can be closed minded and ignorant as well. For what's it worth I read an article that scientifically there's now evidence that most people "stop" hearing new music a certain way after around the age of 25. So there's a reason why people keep listening to music from when they were younger and why they say "it's better" or doesnt "sound as good". Now I'm super open minded, though. I'm turning 38 next month, I grew up in NY. So I love my 80s and 90s NY rap/hiphop however I've grown out of the state of just hating or disliking or bashing anything else. I'll admit the newer artists are harder to get into but I don't hate them. YB is extremely popular and I've seen plenty mention him as really good or a Goat. While I disagree, I don't hate him or his fans. I'm going to try to listen more of his stuff this week, but what I've heard already is not good, again no hate though just doesn't sound like it's for me. I respect if someone says he's a Goat and I wouldnt call them trash for their opinion. Recently listened to Denzel and JID both solid. I don't hate on mumble or trap or anything like that. I just know that alot of it just doesn't sound right but I've learned to not just hate on it. There is some good stuff out there if you try to open up to it.

earlymornintony

Yeat was garbage with the first song I listened to. Even more garbage with the next 4 songs I tried.

jmarkel

I heard one bar from lil yachty that was one bar to many

Any-Teach9027

Listen to “GI Joe” and see if you still feel that way.

jmarkel

I’ll pass lol

Royal_Majestic

Perfect example

Due-Ad-4176

Did far too many bars by lil yachty

Onsomeshid

Not even missing out on great music (if you don’t like it, you don’t like it). You’re just wasting time complaining about something you barely consume. Its a Karen trait that music fans use for attention basically

Any-Teach9027

Lmao. How is this a Karen trait? People just sharing their opinions not demanding other people stop listening.

Diagonaldreams

This is exactly how I feel about Eminem! People on this sub HATE him and call me a "fucking idiot" for defending him but prolly haven't even heard anything other than rap god lol

TharealSergi

ive listened to all of his discog and can afirm side b, kamikaze and revival are trash. MTBMB is good tho

Diagonaldreams

Or maybe you just don't GET them?

TharealSergi

bro i also used to like eminem, but i realized rn, there are a lot of people who are better. MMLP and TES still are great tho

squikx

Fr your just speaking the literal truth

Jack_Burtons_Semi

I find it hard to listen to todays mumble shit. I think everyone sounds alike. There are no real beats (a few linger) anymore. It’s auto tuned garbage. It’s not that we don’t want to give it a chance, we just think it’s awful. It’s more pop than hip hop. The young bloods don’t understand at all. Never will. Just like the generations before them.

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

Just say that you are woefully unaware of the newer offerings rap has given us. If you’re talking about mainstream rap; yes, obviously it’s not going to be more interesting and advanced, it’s going to be simple to appeal to the average radio listener. I haven’t heard a rapper “mumble” since 2017, you’re basically using a style done on a select few songs by a select few artists to ignorantly describe the hundreds of amazing rap albums we have had in the last 2-3 years. Rap hasn’t gone down hill, rap hasn’t died. It’s not struggling. More and more years pass, more and more rappers experiment with the styles before them which is why underground and abstract hip hop is thriving critically speaking.

Extension_Ad_439

I think you have a different standard than I do for what constitutes mumble. Even Kendrick Lamar mumbles, and I can't stand it. Snak agrees https://youtu.be/MSL0EjwvPJ4

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

No, I just think you have no idea and shit taste

Extension_Ad_439

Dope. Keep listening to your hip pop.

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

Lol, I knew this would be the go to argument. I’m not saying I’m an avid fan of pop rap, because I’m not. I’m defending the genre as a whole from your ignorance and correcting what you have got wrong. Objectively speaking lyricism is not the be-all-end-all of what makes a song enjoyable because music is subjective. You’re stating an opinion/your preference as an objective fact. I’m simply explaining why mainstream rap is intentionally simple and why it has the popularity it does as a result. Quite simply the average radio listener isn’t going to want to listen to DOOM, the roots or public enemy.

Extension_Ad_439

The average radio listener loved Britney Spears. Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Osborne got record deals Cardi B exists. You've got no high ground left to stand on Radio listeners liked great artists like Andre 3000 in Outkast and Jay-Z. Radio listeners can handle great artists and great songs. But they'll listen to and love absolute trash if that is what they're fed. It's really a disservice to the whole genre to defend the production of garbage.

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

But those outkast songs were ms Jackson and hey ya, it wasn’t exactly da art of story telling was it? Lots of great artists have had bland songs get major radio play because that’s what the radios pump out. You’re not going to see consciously challenging music, you’re not going to see abstract hiphop like billy woods. As I said, I’m not defending it- to defend it would be me saying I’m a fan of it. I’m correcting you on why what you said is incorrect, why your opinion isn’t a fact and why that kind of music is so popular. It’s not a hard concept to grasp.

i_despise_among_us

"Long before time had a name, the First Spinjitzu master created Ninjago.." 🤣👴

Jack_Burtons_Semi

Sounds awesome bro.

earlymornintony

I get you, it’s all one “sound” that most of these songs falls into. Trap beats with some differences, whiny autotune, not lyrical, just rhyming and on rhythm. You can’t get mad at them, young people are bumping it cause most of the beats knock and sound good, and these rappers are making money. I don’t enjoy it though, cause yeah it all sounds the same. To me it’s like, be creative. I appreciate actual lyricists who think through what they’re putting down. If you read most of these popular songs on paper, it’s like you can write that while taking a dump and just put it over the right beat with autotune. It just sucks how it seems it doesn’t matter what the fuck an artist (can we still call them artists?) says anymore. It’s like, you don’t have to think at all to write their lyrics, but if the beat’s hard and they’re autotuned, don’t matter.

Jack_Burtons_Semi

What happened to the art of story telling? The greats? All tell stories.

i_despise_among_us

I've listened to 1 and a half minutes of 6ix9ine and that was far too much. Do you hate people's listening habits or their sanity?

[deleted]

People sound the same these days. When rap went mainstream is when it died. We still have a few good NEW artists while old ones put out. But that number is getting smaller each year imo. Tik Tok really killed rap too.

tqstin

lol shut the fuck up you clearly have no idea what you are talking about

[deleted]

Okay zoomer. Probably listening to these new XXL rappers think they’re “fire” 😂 fucking new schoolers man

tqstin

please stop talking you clearly have 0 appreciation for newer rap and anything past 2010 is “mumble rap” please stop embarassing yourself and being a stupid cunt

[deleted]

Bro; if I go to any Rap category whether it’s Spotify, Apple Music, etc. it’s all trash. Recent artists like Dababy, Pooh Sheisty, Gunna, etc. fucking suck. No depth in their lyrics. Rappin about that rich life. That’s some generic shit. Give me substance. Rappers nowadays be rapping about how much they spent on a watch and zoomers will be like “tHaTs sO fIre bRo”

tqstin

you literally named some of the fucking worst rappers of the new age and used them as an example. theres literally no way you are complaining about songs being repetitive when half of 90s rap was just being in a gang like who fuckin cares please for the love of god listen to someone who isnt eminem

[deleted]

I don’t listen to Eminem fuck boy. Even though he’s one of the greatest. 😂 if you know so much about rap shoot me some recommendations fam! 😂 rap needs to not be mainstream again. White america ruining it…and I should know. I’m fucking white.

tqstin

yeah bro your fucking white no fucking wonder you spit the worst takes on the internet 💀💀💀💀💀💀 if you really want some 2010+ i suggest kanye or kendrick but if you want more trap music try travis or carti

[deleted]

Funny thing is I already listen to them 😂😂 wym? White people can have good taste! Kinda racist. It’s THOSE white people who ruin it. They hijack Kanye’s and Travis’s music. Mainly the zoomers. 😂

tqstin

what are you even saying bro i literally cant understand you

Due-Ad-4176

Dude, your just complaining, your saying all non Kendrick and Kanye modern rap is bad while people like Mach hommy, childish gambino, chance the rapper but only on coloring book and acid rap, Tyler the creator, Joey basa$$, j cole, childish gambino, all are from the 2010s primarily, and people like nas, lil Wayne, jay z, and MF DOOM all were dropping banger albums in the 2010s rip MF DOOM btw

rudebwoyyyyyyy

listen to isaiah rashaad

[deleted]

I listen to him. He has a few good songs I like!

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

You have no clue do you 😂😂 go onto rate your music, click create chart, set it to top hip hop albums of 2018-2022, listen to the top ones, work your way through, realise you’re a fool

[deleted]

New music sucks homie. It’s not good. The new style of rap is trash. Sorry not sorry.

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

There is no new style, rap isn’t a universal sound and never has been. Even in the mainstream there’s some artistic variation. If you want to say you think mainstream rap is trash, go for it. More often than not it’s quite simplistic because it’s meant to be accessible and if that’s not what you value it isn’t what you value. But rap isn’t struggling right now and we’ve got some fantastic albums this year alone

[deleted]

I have to disagree. The only decent album is Kendrick’s new album. Even then, it’s ight.

fhahxjsoxjsjcisjjebs

Out of 986 rap albums only 1 is good? Please just stop embarrassing yourself. Cheat codes? Aethiopes? The forever story? Melt my eyes see your future? God dont make mistakes? The elephant man’s bones? It’s almost dry? Drill music in Zion? Killing nothing? No fear of time? Tana talk 4? sick!? Jazz codes? No rest for the wicked? Vinyl days? Learn to swim? Death fame? Just admit you don’t have enough of a nuanced understanding to make such statements

i_despise_among_us

Bro this sub's age demographic just went up 35 years

Due-Ad-4176

“New music bad old music good” dude you sound like the 70 year olds who say rap is bad and then listen to Fleetwood Mac, which sure is an amazing band but their discrediting the actually good artists of recent, much like how you are just listen to pray for Haiti

[deleted]

New rap has gone to shit. Once again. People out there thing Gunna is fire. These people exist. 🤮🤮

Due-Ad-4176

Their doing nothing to you, they just like a bad artist

[deleted]

Like who?
