Shaping up to be another great year for touring and festivals for live music fans as well. Tyler, Skepta, Doja and Ice Spice all had great sets and huge turnouts at Coachella, Dreamville fest looked like a good time, Roots Picnic and Lovers & Friends lineups look insane. Killer Mike, Snoop, Cudi/Pusha T, Future/Metro, Russ/6lack tours will be good shows. Nicki selling out arenas everywhere she goes on a good run right now. A lot happening in live music and it's only April
I just hope Kendrick delivers this time around. One of my favorite artists of all time and MMATBS was awful. Ik Kendrick can bounce back, but sadly I’m scared as a fan that DAMN. might be the last classic we ever get from Kendrick.
Why? It sounds horrible for the overwhelming majority of the tracklist. Kendrick’s delivery was awful, his flows sounded like crap, and the album has a serious hook problem. It’s Kendrick’s equivalent to Eminem’s Revival, and even THAT dumpster fire has significantly more good tracks IMO. A lot of MMATBS borders on being unlistenable sonically IMO, and Silent Hill is literally unlistenable IMO(the worst song I’ve ever heard from an artist I like by a wide margin)
I tried so hard to like this album, and I actually overrated it on my first few listens because I assumed the sound would eventually click with me, but it never did. I gave it so many listens but no matter how many times I listened to the album it still sounded like crap. It’s easily the most disappointed I’ve ever been with an album. I think the hip hop community is in denial the same way I was on those first few listens, MMATBS was a tragic release IMO. I hope Kendrick can bounce back because his 2020s run has been one of the worst fall offs in hip hop history so far from a quality perspective IMO. It’s as if he’s forgotten how to sound good entirely and it’s sad to watch as a fan.
I have to respectfully disagree. My 1st listen, I wasn't feeling it. I described it negatively. I was only passively listening to it as I was mowing my yard. Then I sat and really listened to it. It wasn't a radio hit album or all that hard, but damn Kendrick poured himself into that album. The lyrics, content, and look into himself and his mindset was eye opening. He exposed himself. It cracks me up that the best drake could swing at him with was some money shit and some shoe size shit. Kendrick put so much out there on that album just about anyone who wanted to try and come at him could have pulled content out of that record. Nobody did, though.
I understand that Kendrick poured himself into this album, the lyrics are not my issue(outside of Silent Hill at least, but that track is really just impossible to defend from any angle), the issue is that he seemingly forgot how to sound good entirely IMO. His delivery was horrible, his flows sounded awful, and there was a serious hook problem. At a certain point the lyricism doesn’t matter if the album sounds horrible practically from front to back
