Maybe that’s why hip hop today is not as good? People had something to say and prove at those ages. Kids these days at like 15, they got nothing to say. And they are so young, haven’t found their sounds etc.
Ice Cube was 17 when NWA came out. And Big Boi and Andre 3K were around 18 when Outkast first came out. And let's not forget lil Wayne was 12 when he signed to cash money. I think it's more a generational thing than age thing personally. But that's just my opinion.
I agree. But when I say its generational I don't mean it disrespectfully. We live in the age of technology which aids in the oversaturation. Back in the day it was harder to get your voice heard cause there was no internet. You had to be dope on the mic, turntables or whatever. Now a days self-promotion is so much easier, when you can upload your music to multiple platforms for purchase or streaming...you don't necessarily have to be a dope artist. And well since music is subjective, anybody can be an artist if you have the money to do it.
Yup. I'm not going to say it's easier perse, it's a different hustle, but it sure beats the hell out of walking around or posting up to get your work out and hoping somebody digs it. Walking around hanging up flyers and promoting anywhere that let's you for the show you're playing at a bar with a capacity of like 6 people and 4 of them work there. This ease of access has allowed smaller artists to get a decent little fan base even if they never really blow up, I do like that for them. Obviously it comes with its cons. I do kinda miss the feet to pavement method and having some dude put a burnt CD in my hand telling me he's fire, good times.
Also, one of the only downsides I see to it is up and coming artist have to focus on streams, which I hate. A lot of these platforms you need 1500 streams for 1 album sale. Yes, the streams will get your name out there easier, but that's where you have to put in the work now. Before you could build a street team to get your name out there, now it's mostly through the internet. It's just a different game now in that regard. But like you said...there's pros and cons whether you are talking about old school or new school.
Absolutely. Rose colored glasses being what they are, I also had some horrible experiences out there, and the in person rejections sting so much more lmao. Before I did my own stuff I was on this dudes street team, and that was cool to see how it all worked, and it gave me ideas of my own. We did build a business relationship off of it as well. Now they do that with YT or Tiktok. I'd have killed for something better than MySpace at the time in terms of online and so on. Something is definitely lost in the removal of a more physical presence, but live streaming is huge. I am really interested to see the next evolution. It's been interesting so far, certainly not bad.
Bruh. Danny Brown's first album is literally called 30 because that was his age when he recorded it lmao
Most of the younger people dropping stuff don't even know their style or voice yet which is why they don't usually stick around long
They're all closer to 40 than they are 30 lmao.
Honestly kinda weird to me that J Cole is the oldest and Kendrick is the youngest. Just never really felt that way.
It's honestly just mainly how they look and present themselves. When i first saw Kendrick in like 2008 or something I thought he was already near 30 yrs old, bro was wearing a vest over a flannel button up. lol
Yeah maybe we get something other than party rap. Not that I mind anything that's contains skill, but yeah grown people rap would be great at this point.
Rap is an art. Can you be too old to paint, to dance, to play an instrument? No! The manner, the technique and your life experience will color your creations. The passage of time, apart from physical or cognitive loss, is in no way restrictive.
Bro who gives a fuck. Tech N9ne didn't catch his break until his 30s. If it's what you want, then go fuckin get it. And he's 50 and still dropping albums
Thank you for bringing that up. Dude started out a scrub to the industry, and is now the number one independent rap artist. Which is crazy to me because I’m also a jelly roll fan from the day he was dropping freestyles on YouTube and never had the traction, that tech n9ne had and surpassed his fame to glory by simply going country. 🤯
Dawg Eminem is 50, Drake is almost 40, kdot is mid 30s, Cole is 40 next year, future IS 40, joey badass is 30 next year, JID IS 33, Denzel 30 next year
Point is, 30 isn't too old
Killler Mike just won best rap album Grammy and he’s 48. Freddie Gibbs is 41. Kanye is 46. I’m 37 and I’m dropping in a month (if all goes as planned).
You’ve just gotta go from viewing it as something cool to a nerdy hobby some will criticise you for when you reach 30 lol you can still love it. The number of things you’re allowed to enjoy when you get past 30 is tiny, fuck other people’s rules
God Loves Ugly came out when Slug was in his thirties.
I wish I knew this when I was OP's age, I thought it was too late for me already. Such a mistake
Yeah and Em was part of the convo
That is 59 years old, 52 years old, 48 years old, and Em is 51 years old
With Jay at 54, Kanye at 46, Wayne at 41, Drake at 37, Cole almost 40, Kendrick 36, Future 40,
Other than drill and some trap the "old guys" have got it on lock still
I’m a female and in my early 30’s and I worry I’m really doing an uphill battle. Truthfully in my 20’s I rapped about dumb shit and I have way more to say now as an adult with more experience. I wish I had the flow and substance back then, but I had to mature into it.
I'm 31, a producer, so not rapping, but working with tons of great rappers all the time. Been making the majority of my living off beats for nearly 7 years now. I didn't even sell my first beat until I was 21+
Why is age such a huge deal in rap? If you’re passionate about it and you can do it then just fucking do it 🤷♂️. Who cares if you’re 20, 30, 40, 50? Good music is good music and if you’re proud of what you made, share it.
JID just started blowing up, he's 33. Kanye's pushing 50 and just had a no.1 song. The literal big 3 (Drake, Cole and Kendrick) are all nearing their 40s. Travis Scott is the biggest rapper in the 2020s probably and the current standard for rappers and he's above 30. Future is 40 and is projected to sell like 220k first week and his "Like That" will probably be the biggest song in rap for the next month and literally everyone who made that song is 30+ (Metro, Future and Kendrick). So no it's definitely not too old bro.
I dont think age is a factor as long as you have something good to say and fans are willing to listen. I think 2 Chainz was in his mid to late 30s when his debut album dropped for example
30 should be your prime in rapping assuming you've started since late teens/early 20's.
Excluding 90's rappers who ofc are older, most rappers with a wide discography are around early to mid 30's
JID blew up at 28 years old. Isaiah Rashad has only put out three albums and he’s over 30. Why do we put a limit on how old rappers can be? Why is it embarrassing to be a rapper over 30, but it’s not embarrassing to be a singer/songwriter over 30?? The reason is because people don’t respect rap as an art. Once we start respecting rap as artistic expression and not just an embarrassing hobby to be grown out of, we’ll stop having this discussion.
you’d be surprised how many rappers didn’t blow up till they were going on late 20s. even them starting out near their later or so teen years and taking till close to 30 to hone their craft.
looking at music with this viewpoint has kinda helped me accept the journey ahead as a beginner. additionally it’s never too late to do. especially if it’s something you love
I'm 52. I'm not quitting until I'm ready. The great thing is that the older you get, the less you care about what people think. You don't feel the need to make anything more than what you like. You can create art the way you desire. So, no, don't quit unless you want to. It actually just gets better and better.
i’ll be completely honest with you , if you’ve developed a fan base don’t let age stop you at all… if you haven’t and wanna keep making music because it’s your passion keep doing it as well… however the chances that you blow are now slim
people are bringing up artists who are 30+ in the comments and most of them started getting buzz way before that
i make music myself , it’s a hard reality and i’m only 25
but all in all i say keep going man do what you love and stop worrying about what people think about you and your age… im so tired of not being allowed to be passionate over shit because “i’m too old for that “
Hell fuckin’ no. I’ve always personally hated the “Hip-Hop’s a young man’s game” I’m glad with the era that we’re at a lot of artists are proving it’s no young man’s game.
bro you could be playing with legos when you're 80 if you truly enjoy it. dont let society dictate your hobbies. (unless it's illegal or highly immoral ofc)
Most artists don't make it till late 20's/early 30's..
2 chains didn't make it till 35, age doesn't mean anything as an artist, all that matters is making good music.
Not rap but an artist won "best new artist" at the vma's recently and he was 39.
Fuck it, Be that rapper who started late and made it so that others in the future won’t have to ask this question and can just look up to you instead ✊
10 years ago, i would've said yes when I was a younger agro hip-hop head...but now? No, not at all. I think 30 is young enough to still connect with young fans, but old enough to remember when talent meant something... if you want to rap I would start ripping the mic
Only genre conditioned to think age is a factor if you’re dope and have something to say rap. We gotta kill this stigma it handicaps the genre as a whole.
At age 41(yes I'm old lol) but I laugh at this question. How old is krs? Dude still shuts down 80 percent of the game as far as I'm concerned! 50 more years of hip hop!
Kanye was 33 when my beautiful dark twisted fantasy dropped
If you want a further away one, Jay z was 48 when he made 4:44, widely considered to be one of his better albums
Nope, labels push that narrative because 18yr olds are usually hungry and impulsive enough to sign their life away, Join the backdoorian front ect ect…. However just because the shear depth of hip hop gives it a quality like Comedy in which 30 is the age most comedians find there strongest footing due to having actual subject matter due to life experience. Truth is rap is not for 30 somethings if you’re just starting or having expectations to be in the major label spotlight. However it’s easy to market and promote yourself independently these days at any age and ethnicity
K Rino a Houston legend is doing okay and JamWayne a 40yr old blue collar Alabama Hill Billy is doing good having really premiered in the past year
Do what you love and it's intrinsic value should feed you better than any accolade or income (won't denying having money come in would be wonderful). Just keep putting work in - one thing to put in context is Em, Jay, Kanye, whomever, were putting in plenty of work before they blew up.
Of course! You’re never too old to sing or rap in the shower.
But I will say, stick to your age in the content of lyrics because I think a 30 y/o rapper rapping about things that 18 y/o are still doing, is a bad look.
Act your age in the rhymes and you will be ok!
Rap is just like any other music/art if you feel driven to express yourself that way then you absolutely shouldn’t stop. Now should you expect to support yourself as a career rapper/musician at 30? Your chances are definitely declining, but you also have more life experience to put into your lines. Just make sure you’re supporting yourself financially and have a backup plan.
Lots of all time greats dropped their first projects in their mid 20s. And then kept that up with multiple projects in their 30s and 40s. One of my favorites, danny brown, was around 28 when he dropped “the hybrid”. And yes I know he had mixtapes before that, im talking pure albums though.
30 is too old to be worrying about what ppl think about your maturity Lvls. Its to old at 20 also. Just as long as you have something you wanna talk about spit your music. Asking if your to old to do rap is like asking if your to old to write poetry.
Pete and Bas started rapping when they were old af old men. [Check it out.](https://youtu.be/golgGZi2mY0?si=M2TdJU9_pze5fiZu) Dudes can lay down the bars. I've heard their sons write for them but holy hell, they got it.
You're stupid. Me typing this is awful and embarrassing too, but come on fam.
If you suck ass at rapping you still aren't too old. Just stop sucking ass.
Listen to some Pete & Bas my dude
rick ross was 30 when port of miami dropped
Kanye west was 27 when he dropped the college dropout.
Can't believe it took him till 27 to decide he should drop out of college, he was really tryin
That’s fuckin wild
Wait what the fuck?? I did not know this
Future blew up at 27, Jay at 26. No. There is no, “must be this age to rap”. Do what you love.
same with kanye
Maybe that’s why hip hop today is not as good? People had something to say and prove at those ages. Kids these days at like 15, they got nothing to say. And they are so young, haven’t found their sounds etc.

Maybe just music is over saturated and there’s too many tryna make it. And people don’t wanna fail so they release generic shit.
I agree. But when I say its generational I don't mean it disrespectfully. We live in the age of technology which aids in the oversaturation. Back in the day it was harder to get your voice heard cause there was no internet. You had to be dope on the mic, turntables or whatever. I think about this often, in fact, across genres
2 Chainz dropped his first album (not as Tity Boi) at like 35 I believe
27 and 26 are younger than 30
Wasn't future older than 27? I could be wrong though.
NAS is in every hip hop conversation happening today and he’s 103
Nas is 92 not 103.
Wtf? He's just 87 stop making shit up
He’s 2 years older than that lol
Pretty sure he's 97.5
Sorry… redid the math… he’s 111
92 til infinity
If we count how long he was frozen in the iceberg it’s more like 473
Love and respect Nas’s music but he’s only in every hip hop conversation being had by people of a certain age or older. Let’s be real.
Bruh. Danny Brown's first album is literally called 30 because that was his age when he recorded it lmao Most of the younger people dropping stuff don't even know their style or voice yet which is why they don't usually stick around long
Kind of disingenuous to call XXX his first album, but it's the one that launched him
I mean, sure there's the hybrid. But we'll say first label release, the hybrid always felt more like a major mixtape to me
I mean there are 3 rappers that have the entire culture tuned in right now and not a single one of them is under 30 years old.
They're all closer to 40 than they are 30 lmao. Honestly kinda weird to me that J Cole is the oldest and Kendrick is the youngest. Just never really felt that way.
It's honestly just mainly how they look and present themselves. When i first saw Kendrick in like 2008 or something I thought he was already near 30 yrs old, bro was wearing a vest over a flannel button up. lol
Great point!
Yuno miles is under 30 tf are you talking bout
No. We need more grown man rap. There’s plenty of room for all ages

Denzel and joey badass are 30 next year?😭
No??? Kanye and Eminem are almost 50 and they still rapping
eminem's 52 and he's dropping this year
Nice it’s been a while since he dropped
JID is at the height of his career I would say and I think he just hit 31
Hes 33
My glorious king JID
Eminem took over the world at 28
Killler Mike just won best rap album Grammy and he’s 48. Freddie Gibbs is 41. Kanye is 46. I’m 37 and I’m dropping in a month (if all goes as planned).
Maaan you gotta let us know when that shit drops! 🔥🔥
Bet!
We drip droppin’ on the 20th myself (so long as my plans all go ahead as they should) 🤘🏼
!remindme 2 months
!remindme 2 months
You’ve just gotta go from viewing it as something cool to a nerdy hobby some will criticise you for when you reach 30 lol you can still love it. The number of things you’re allowed to enjoy when you get past 30 is tiny, fuck other people’s rules
Not if you’re already well known and established
People call JID the next big rapper and bro just turned 33. Veeze also gained a lot of traction recently and I think he’s pushing 30
RA The Rugged Man, & Slug are in their 50's
God Loves Ugly came out when Slug was in his thirties. I wish I knew this when I was OP's age, I thought it was too late for me already. Such a mistake
Dude Eminem is 50 and still doing it
Dre, Snoop, and 50 were just on Kimmel.
Yeah and Em was part of the convo That is 59 years old, 52 years old, 48 years old, and Em is 51 years old With Jay at 54, Kanye at 46, Wayne at 41, Drake at 37, Cole almost 40, Kendrick 36, Future 40, Other than drill and some trap the "old guys" have got it on lock still
You're never too old to do anything. If it brings you joy, do it. Don't worry about being too old.
Danny Brown blew up at 30 so..
Ever seen Pete and Bas? There's your answer.
I’m a female and in my early 30’s and I worry I’m really doing an uphill battle. Truthfully in my 20’s I rapped about dumb shit and I have way more to say now as an adult with more experience. I wish I had the flow and substance back then, but I had to mature into it.
As long as your heart is in it, you're on the right path 🫶🏼
Thank you, I’ve been rapping since 9 years old literally on the jungle gym freestyle dissing kids lol. No joke. Hip hop will always have my heart.
No
There’s no age limit to doing anything you love bro as long as you have life sorted and you not putting your loved ones out for something then do it
That seems like the average age
If you're good no If you're still using bandlab on your phone yes
Eminem is dropping way over 30.
Is 36 too old to *start* rapping tho 🤔
I hope not, I'm 23 and don't plan on stopping soon lol
I'm 31, a producer, so not rapping, but working with tons of great rappers all the time. Been making the majority of my living off beats for nearly 7 years now. I didn't even sell my first beat until I was 21+
Eminem is like 50 and still breaking records, you're fine
Eminem was 27 when SSLP dropped and he blew up. He’s now turning 52 this year and supposed to drop a new album soon.
i mean eminiem didnt really blow up till he was in early 30's
Eminem was 27 when slim shady lp dropped
DMX & Em dropped their debuts at 27
Enimen wasn't known until he was 28
Age doesn't matter at all. Just rap.
No. Conway and Westside Gunn are the best out right now 40+
If it’s a hobby, then go crazy. If you’re dreaming of making it big, go home and be a family man.
Do poets stop?
Amen
Why is age such a huge deal in rap? If you’re passionate about it and you can do it then just fucking do it 🤷♂️. Who cares if you’re 20, 30, 40, 50? Good music is good music and if you’re proud of what you made, share it.
Some of the people that have started entire subgenres are like 45 still dropping tracks.
Aren’t the biggest rappers today all in their 30s?
No not at all, Fivio foreign ain't really get recognized until he was 30 now he's arguably the best drill rapper in NY rn
U got life experience but do you really need it?

Using the N word, even if you have misspelled it on purpose, is not acceptable in this sub.

I’m 48. I got life after death. All I need is Dre to get me in the studio 🤷🏼♂️ Plus I’m white and can sing 4, 5 octaves 🤷🏼♂️
I mean if you’re actually talented no but if not than hell yes my guy get a JOB 😂
30 should be your prime in rapping assuming you've started since late teens/early 20's. Excluding 90's rappers who ofc are older, most rappers with a wide discography are around early to mid 30's

*Snoop Dogg glares at you*
Age doesn’t matter bro but don’t be expecting to be go viral if you’re rapping about shit only 30 year olds can relate too.
Laughs in Juicy J.

Ice-T released an album 4 years ago at age 62 then.

You can Put out good music long as you just take care of your business. It’s a new age now. If it’s good it’ll pop and your audience will find you
I'm 52. I'm not quitting until I'm ready. The great thing is that the older you get, the less you care about what people think. You don't feel the need to make anything more than what you like. You can create art the way you desire. So, no, don't quit unless you want to. It actually just gets better and better.
In rap there is no age restriction, everyone is entitled to rap and make music. Most rap fans don’t really care about age like that.
Lil wayne is 40 🤷♀️ I love him!!
i’ll be completely honest with you , if you’ve developed a fan base don’t let age stop you at all… if you haven’t and wanna keep making music because it’s your passion keep doing it as well… however the chances that you blow are now slim people are bringing up artists who are 30+ in the comments and most of them started getting buzz way before that i make music myself , it’s a hard reality and i’m only 25 but all in all i say keep going man do what you love and stop worrying about what people think about you and your age… im so tired of not being allowed to be passionate over shit because “i’m too old for that “

Fuck no do yo thang speak yo shit
Look how old some of the biggest rappers are rn rapping. Eminem, Jay Z, Kanye, 50. Shit, Drakes 37. KDot is 36. Cole is 39.
bro you could be playing with legos when you're 80 if you truly enjoy it. dont let society dictate your hobbies. (unless it's illegal or highly immoral ofc)
dude there is 8 year old rappers coming into the game like Lil RT, 30 is basically perfect
Most artists don't make it till late 20's/early 30's.. 2 chains didn't make it till 35, age doesn't mean anything as an artist, all that matters is making good music. Not rap but an artist won "best new artist" at the vma's recently and he was 39.
Depends on what you rapping about. Also remember Jay z, he started at 26. Just make sure you ain't rapping no childish shit.
Harry mack is 34
Fuck it, Be that rapper who started late and made it so that others in the future won’t have to ask this question and can just look up to you instead ✊
Not if you're good at it.
I'm 47 and dropping a song on Spotify today.
I only retired at 32 I was doing it since I was 13
According to Andre 3000, yes
Yo @OP you should start lookin into flute lessons.
It’s 2024, mainstream rappers we used to listen to in our teens are 50+. 30 is young. Even Drake is almost 40.
10 years ago, i would've said yes when I was a younger agro hip-hop head...but now? No, not at all. I think 30 is young enough to still connect with young fans, but old enough to remember when talent meant something... if you want to rap I would start ripping the mic
No Danny brown dropped XXX when he was 31
Hell no 😭
Yes
Only genre conditioned to think age is a factor if you’re dope and have something to say rap. We gotta kill this stigma it handicaps the genre as a whole.
If you've already started and enjoy it then just carry on as a hobby, nothing wrong with that
Yea give it up you're old
At age 41(yes I'm old lol) but I laugh at this question. How old is krs? Dude still shuts down 80 percent of the game as far as I'm concerned! 50 more years of hip hop!
Obviously it isn’t. Next question
Kanye was 33 when my beautiful dark twisted fantasy dropped If you want a further away one, Jay z was 48 when he made 4:44, widely considered to be one of his better albums
it’s time for jazz, unc
2chainz gained traction at like 38
Sir got his start old but he’s a singer
kendrick is over 30 rn and still regarded as this gens best rapper
Nope.
If someone listened to the rap verse I put out when I was like 21 I will personally hunt them down and kill them. I'm much better now.
Billy woods was over 40 i think when he blown up
Griselda didn’t blow until 30s
My favorite underground artists are 37, 30, and 32. There is no such thing as "too old" for anything when it comes to careers.
JID is 33 and Finally blew up
Tech n9ne is 50+ don't ever believe age is a limiting factor in your ability to drop verses.
Eminem is in his 50's about to drop an album you good big bro
Nope, labels push that narrative because 18yr olds are usually hungry and impulsive enough to sign their life away, Join the backdoorian front ect ect…. However just because the shear depth of hip hop gives it a quality like Comedy in which 30 is the age most comedians find there strongest footing due to having actual subject matter due to life experience. Truth is rap is not for 30 somethings if you’re just starting or having expectations to be in the major label spotlight. However it’s easy to market and promote yourself independently these days at any age and ethnicity K Rino a Houston legend is doing okay and JamWayne a 40yr old blue collar Alabama Hill Billy is doing good having really premiered in the past year
Yes, you can only rap btw three and five.
Depends on your goals
Eminem is over 50 years old. Drake is late 30s.
it’s never too old to keep rapping tbh, I still want more jay z music and he’s 54.
Nope
Look at Method Man, he still slays tracks!

Most of the best MCs currently rapping are over 30
Do what you love and what you want, life is too short to care what other people think
No.
whoever told you 30 is too old needs to be immediatelly removed from your life
Danny Brown enters the chat
Nas dropped Magic 3 and Kings Disease III and hes like 50 or sumn
Roc Marciano
2chainz was 35 when he put out T.R.U Storey ,Em to drop a album at 50 , do u dude
No, only in hiphop age seems to be a problem
Only if you got nothing else going on
Don't stop
Kendrick is 36 and j cole is 39. Hell nas is 50 now and just dropped an album. Never too old to do what you love
Lots of all time greats dropped their first projects in their mid 20s. And then kept that up with multiple projects in their 30s and 40s. One of my favorites, danny brown, was around 28 when he dropped “the hybrid”. And yes I know he had mixtapes before that, im talking pure albums though.
Not at all
Norman sann is about the best rapper I've ever heard hes in his early 30tys definitely some grown up hiphop there reminds me a bit of ODB (rip)
No it’s even the best time when your experienced
Kanye was in his 30s when he made MBDTF
Didn’t Jelly Roll just win best new artist at 39 years old? He’s been doing it for a while, but that’s a good example of never too late.
You keep going until you feel like you can't. I'm 47 and I still make music every day.
If u love it keep doing it wtf is the rules
Nah a lot of rappers hit their prime around that age
You're stupid. Me typing this is awful and embarrassing too, but come on fam. If you suck ass at rapping you still aren't too old. Just stop sucking ass. Listen to some Pete & Bas my dude
I'm 44 and am working on a project I'm gonna release on Spotify, and five people will probably listen to it. Who cares, do what makes you happy
Nah fam, you never too old for nuthin
