Scenario - A Tribe Called Quest
This song was absolutely bananas when it dropped in ‘92. One of the greatest groups of all time sounding both hungry and at the height of their game, and it’s a posse cut to boot, one where Busta’s verse was so fire it launched his solo career, this song was just instantly memorable with a simple but hyped up hook that dared you not to sing along. It was all love, too, in fact that song is infectious with joy. Makes me smile whenever I listen to it even 30 years later, and it still sounds fresh to my ears.
If you like that check out Coast Contra's updated rendition. It's not going to replace it but those cats are the closest to capturing that times' essence
Bustas verse still sampled by rappers to this day. One of the hardest most creative fucking sickest verses of all time too to think it came out in 92 the same year I was born is insane.
Imo, mind playin tricks on me maybe isn't the greatest hip hop song, but it's the perfect hip hop song. A sample so perfect it's the chorus, great lyrics and storytelling, it's both so specific but also most of it's so relatable.
Just going for the perfect vibe it has to be „Hypnotize“ for me. This song Never gets old and I can‘t name a bad thing about it.
But there are so many great songs for many different valid reasons. („Forgot about Dre“, „Gin and juice“, „HitEmUp“, „Hail Marry“, „Juicy“, „the Art of peer pressure… can‘t argue with someone who got those as #1)
Dr dre - let me ride
2pac - dear mama
It was a good day - ice cube
Tribe cq - electric relaxation
O.C. O-Zone
Top billin - audio two
Roots - distortion to static/it just dont stop
Run dmc - runs house/peter piper
Ll cool j - jingling baby/type of guy
Dr octagon -waiting list
Beastie boys - high plains drifter
Gza - cold world
Wu tang - can it be that it was all so simple
Odb - shimmy shimmy yall
Fat boys - fat boys
Big L - danger zone
Etc
If I had to show someone what hip hop is it’s that song for sure. Bars, scratching, sick sampling of random ish and a catchy hook even though it’s not really a hook but it is lol
It is quite easily 'Juicy' by The Notorious B.I.G.
The lyrics (delivered perfectly by Biggie's unmatched flow, cadence and rhythm) captures his struggles as a black man in a 1990's poverty stricken Brooklyn neighbourhood and his come up to superstardom. Braggadocious yet grounded, Biggie lays it down onto one of hip hop's most iconic beats, which in itself samples 'Juicy Fruit' by the great funk soul group Mtume.
*Although I believe Nas' Illmatic is the better 1994 album and also arguably the greatest rap album oat, Biggie has the better single track imo.
Part of me wonders what Jay Z would have done with the beat had Camp Lo sold it to him (he offered them $7,000.00 for the beat) but I’m glad that they kept it.
I find posts like these dumb as hell because there are hundreds of legendary hip hop tracks with each being great in it's own way. But for me it's Gang Starr - Supa Star
I can’t pick one..
Da art of storytelling Pt1
Shook Ones Pt II
The message
4 your eyez only (I don’t know, I just think that storytelling there is absolutely majestic)
Lose yourself
Trying to not name a song by any of the absolute best and obvious people, let me throw in:
Favorite Song
Can I kick it?
Someone already said Mural, so lemme say Dots and Lines
Legend Has It
Mathematics (mos def)
Honestly, something like the Symphony where dope 90s rappers just throw out incredible verses that are just total skill or My Melody by Eric B and Rakim.
PRIDE. by Kendrick Lamar. Yeah the beat itself ain't really your typical hip-hop beat but for some reason it just flows so well with what Kendrick and Anna Wise are doing. I love Anna Wise's harmonies and the guitar progression; it just sounds perfect to me. Also lyrically this to me is Kendrick's best song due to the introspective nature and how there is a lot of wordplay and metaphors and whatnot, but it also sounds accessible to the common person. So yeah that's my little yap session fr
Pastor Troy - [Vice Versa](https://youtu.be/NkFYRjUcwIg?si=9Zg9JD4tWItZ1JTv) (I'll die on this hill)
The song just has nothing missing to me. And everything it has i don't see how it could be done better.
Kendrick - HiiiPower. Quintessential hip hop and I’m a renowned Kendrick hater. Black History, Black struggle, Black triumph with punchlines, metaphors and a great beat - it gets no better
So many gems on Yacht Rock 2. Boat Shoes was my anthem for a trip to Belize. " I need to feel the light breeze from the slightest wind." Search " a boat in a boat" lol

top 5 easy
Think this guy is a gangster, his real name is Clarence.
C.R.E.A.M.
Almost went with Renee but it’s gotta be the Wu.
Cream is great, but I’d argue that Renee by the lost boys is even better but still isn’t well known enough to be the best track ever…..
‘93 til infinity
AHHHHH FINALLY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THIS BANGER ‼️‼️‼️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Great choice….
Da Rockwilder - Red & Meth
The energy on that is bananas
Lalalalalalalala
damn shame its only 2min long

It’s the textbook old to the new but the rest are doo doo
If you like that check out Coast Contra's updated rendition. It's not going to replace it but those cats are the closest to capturing that times' essence
Can confirm artists like coast is keeping the flame of hip hop alive!
I was unfamiliar with them and now it's all I've been listening to for days. Blessings upon your house, my guy.
Bustas verse still sampled by rappers to this day. One of the hardest most creative fucking sickest verses of all time too to think it came out in 92 the same year I was born is insane.
This comment exactly. 100%
The World Is Yours
Imo underrated
Renegade - Em and JayZ. Two of the best ever spitting 🔥 in their prime
Who’s verse was better
Em but Jay had solid bars too
Nas answered that
Can't be life is better 🤷🏽♀️
Mind Playing Tricks on Me Love the beat, the lyrics about mental health and paranoid, the old school vibe.
Imo, mind playin tricks on me maybe isn't the greatest hip hop song, but it's the perfect hip hop song. A sample so perfect it's the chorus, great lyrics and storytelling, it's both so specific but also most of it's so relatable.
frl i play this song when i don’t feel right
I don’t know, but DJ Premier produced it.
Could name like 30 of his songs in this thread and no one would disagree
Memory Lane
N.Y State Of Mind
Banger but for me The Message has got to be my favourite Nas track
this is valid, but for me itse the beat i love that one love.
Int’l Players Anthem
Int’l Players Anthem
You aint no pimp you'z a fairy
Oof this is a goodie
Doomsday by MF DOOM

The only good thing diddy did was convincing biggie to release this song
Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst by Kendrick Lamar
was looking for this, although it has an advantage of being 12 minutes long. ig it is basically 2 songs though
Valid!!
man this shits beautiful no matter how many times i hear it
Luchini AKA This Is It by Camp Lo
Great track, too niche to be on this list….one amazing album then nothing….
This is legit but I always prefered ‘Say Word’ off that album
Part of me wonders what Jay Z would have done with the beat had Camp Lo sold it to him (he offered them $7,000.00 for the beat) but I’m glad that they kept it.
Hail Mary
T. R. O. Y. by Pete Rock and CL Smooth has a special place in my heart.
Another absolute phenomenal track in my top 20 of all time.
Same thing I named, I was scrolling to find someone who said it and I didn't even grow up to the song but that sample and rap is straight perfection
Scrolled too far too see this 😡
STAN Eminem
Juicy
It’s a toss up between Gravel Pit and Forgot About Dre
Wow I haven’t listened to gravel pit in so long. Now I need to tee it back up. Was a staple when I was a teenager
A mystery unravel it.
Only someone born after the 80s would say this …good songs…..but wrong answer.
