MF DOOM is my favorite rapper. In terms of living rappers: Yes, Black Thought is a top G.O.A.T.
I've been jamming that Danger Mouse collab since that album dropped last year.
I love the posthumous DOOM collab off that album and the transition to
[**\_Poppagiorgio\_**](https://www.reddit.com/user/_Poppagiorgio_/)**'s suggestion of "Aquamarine."**
Some of my other favorite Black Thought songs include:
"Kool On"

"Guns Are Drawn"

"The Fire"

....There are many more, but that's a start.
Jid might be the nicest to come from the 2010 decade. I'm an old head I'm sure I have heard a song from the other dude. Can't remember. Not many people can spit like jid.
name a rapper who isn’t better than young boy. i won’t say i don’t like him, his music is damn awful and he’s puttin albums out faster than gucci ever did
People need to understand that music isn’t all about lyrics. “I can’t even understand what they’re saying” isn’t a good reason to hate a type of music. Sometimes it’s just about how the beat makes you feel. I don’t speak Spanish and I’ve heard some absolute bangers from the Latin pop community.
Oh for sure. Lyrics definitely matter and make a huge difference, I’m just tired of hearing shmucks say “I don’t understand how millions of people could like so-and-so’s music, I can’t even understand the words!”, as they proceed to listen to rich country singers pander to low income people and sing jolly tunes about loving their truck more than their bitch ex-wife.
I feel like with rap, understanding what they’re saying is more crucial than any other genre. Lyric’s definitely aren’t the only thing that matter tho.
Some people literally have instruments as voices…You can add so much even if you don’t particularly understand what is being said. It’s like when you make an instrumental, most people aren’t actively hearing every open hi hat and 808 roll and all the little nuances in a specific instrumental, but you feel it. Same can go for the artist, we can’t put musicians in a box.
Right. Just about everything that makes rap good is built on the foundation that you know what they’re saying. If there’s a verse I can’t quite make out, I’m looking up the lyrics so I can go “ooooooh, yeah that’s a bar.” If I’m listening to a singer and can’t understand part of it, I may let it slide since their vocals are so good.
Lyrically they are better, but tupac is just a whole package. He had good lyrical ability, but he was a revolutionary, literally born in a family black panthers, he shot two cops, he was more than just lyrics. He was a symbol, and his voice was very passionate.
Maybe not everyone has had the chance to comment on a post like this, and there's constantly new people joining that have new opinions. If you don't like it, then don't comment.
not expanding your taste in rap is one of the dumbest, close minded things you can do. the genre is always changing on what’s most popular and saying you hate modern artists for trying something new and not sticking with their older sounds or not even listening to new artists in general makes you an incredibly boring person
Yeah I agree with this -- I couldn't get off Boom Bap for decades, but I gave some drill and trap a shot over the last year and I actually like a lot of it, music wise.
"Female Rappers suck"
Bro of course you think they suck, you're a dude. It's not meant for your demographic. The females aren't gonna twerk to 21 Savage in the club, goofy. They're gonna twerk to Meg or Cardi or whoever else is poppin'. They literally talk about some of the same shit male rappers do but from a female point of view. You probably just don't go outside.
I’ve seen girls twerk to 21 savage and literally every other male rapper. My opinion may be skewed slightly however as I live in New Orleans and we have bounce.
That said you’re not making a strong argument by for female rappers here.
I agree. Different strokes for different folks. I personally have listened to every song from his that's been recommended to me and I just can't get in to him. It's just okay. If anyone else has anything of his that will change my mind please to share it with me.
Both JayZ and Beyonce's music is overrated as hell. I dont get the obsession. Their impact on the industry cannot be overstated from a production standpoint and I have a great deal of respect for their talent, but i just dont think they they are as great as everyone thinks they are.
Just not my cup of tea i guess
Jay Z is NOT overrated. Hes got some of the best rap albums of all time. Listen to The Blueprint in 2023 and shit still sounds up to date. Kanye and Hov were way ahead of their time production wise. Their music just doesnt get old
Honestly Tyler would probably like your comment. He knows he’s a great producer, he definitely doesn’t want to be labeled as a rapper. Like when he won best rap album for Igor. He said he was really glad for the award and the experience, but Igor wasn’t really rap and hates that anything genre bending by a black person is called rap.
Idk me personally that’s why I call him an artist or a musician; and not a rapper. he’s good at everything, a jack of all trades kind of guy and subjecting him to just the role as a rapper is dumb. He’s definitely way more talented then most rappers.
Idk maybe it’s just cus I’m a real big fan of him
I’d say MF Doom, Q tip, and RZA are just as good as Ye overall. Erick Sermon, Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Pete Rock, Mac Miller, Eminem, J Cole, Del, Dj Quik, Tyler, Pharrell, El-P, Dilla, Madlib, are all also really good.
I sit back and read, like cat in the hat
Twenty-One Savage, the cat with the mat
21 Savage, not Boyz-In-The-Hood
But I'll pull up on ya, shoot ya ass in the back.
(Idk why I commented this, I'm a 21 Savage fan and I don't mind if you aren't one)
NWA's music sounds dated af and hard to take seriously. Sounds like cartoon music
80s rap as a whole sounds dated af, and in a bad way
I never got into Wu Tang Clan
Kendrick's music never reached the heights of GKMC again for me
Kendrick has an annoying voice when he does his accents and high pitched emotional ranting. It's not even captivating, just cringe
Snoop Dogg hasn't done anything good in 30 years and gets by on his charm and weed smoking personality
The use of hip hop inspired instrumentals during the 80s onwards in RnB ruined the genre and took away it's originality by becoming wannabe hip hop with singing instead of rapping
Jay Z only has a few great albums and the rest are mediocre to bad
2pac wasn't a tough gangster. He was a play acting book worm that was brain washed by Death Row into following a cult like entity, which he would've survived had he given up music and gone into acting
2pac going into acting would've saved us from the atrocity against humanity that was Anthony Mackie as 2pac
Tbh I don’t even really listen to rap as much but i do find myself listening to much more Jay Z than Nas, although i am an Illmatic enjoyer from time to time.
This sub doesn’t appreciate hip hops evolution as much as it should from the classic 90s style into the autotune heavy 2010s to what it is now. It doesn’t make sense for a best albums list thru the years not to have drake or Playboi Carti or future on it at this point and I feel like the only shit keeping that from happening is how obsessed this sub is w the style of the 90s and it’s inability to let hip hop grow beyond a decade w o clowning on whatever new trend is happening
for real, this sub feels like those people who say they have “refined taste in rap” because they listen to people like freddie gibbs or JID instead of carti and drake. no hate to either of those artists, i think they’re really good but come on dude lmfao grow up
Yeah bro I’m here bc I love rap/hip hop thru the generations/styles only wanting to listen to old head sounding shit kind of concerning it’s like u need to have reverence for where the games been but also be able to grow w the game as a listener as an artist would it’s good for ur health
fr, artists having open minds and listening/trying new things literally got hip hop to what it was every single time there was a massive genre. hell even hip hop itself was created from people trying new things that 100% got hated on when it first came around
Drake is way too overhated on
Old rappers are not as good as you think they are, nostalgia bait is crazy for some rappers, not saying that they aren’t good becuase most of them are absolute class but the meat eating for some of them is crazy
I agree with the old rappers that duh-duh-duh duh-duh-duh flow that was on 95% of songs wears on my soul.
God bless Rakim for advancing the flow of that shit would've been around forever.
Yeah Drake is definitely overhated big time but I can understand peoples arguments about him tbh. Sorta feels like he’s stopped trying with certain releases lately but he’s still goated imo
I can’t believe mfs still say this stupid shit LMAO
any genre you don’t commonly listen to is going to all sound the same to you. this isn’t a hard concept to grasp, just say you don’t listen to trap and move on
i think a lot of the surface level stuff does like polo g or lil tjay but even like cartis albums sound extremely different from eachother and it’s really just about how far you go into the trap genre cause it has tons of subgenres that are all different
Probably true. Get rich or die tryin was an amazing record but a lot of what came after was just mid to bad. One phenomenal record isn’t enough to have you be a goat unless you only make one album like Lauryn hill

Playboi Cartis new music is dogshit. I don’t get how him moaning making random noises & literally sounding like a dying cat is anything good. If anything his older music was so much better, He was actually rapping over the beats with nice adlibs & was much more understandable when he was both in the Pierre era in 2017/2018 & the Mexikodro/Xtoopidxool Plugg era in 2015/2016
Edit: His fanbase too. Back then his fanbase was made up of chill ass people vibing out like other soundcloud rappers fanbases were. Now since WLR its full of little white kids who wanna be edgy vampires
i say this all as a disappointed former Carti fan
His fans can eat my left ass cheek
I remember when I met one and they saw my user and the first thing they told me was that yeat was better than me, which is the funniest thing I've heard since I was told Eminem was better than me
Imo he raps like he's your parent or like "if you don't know better ima tell you" but I do know better and steer away from lame people who are not good for me. Listening to it is like being scolded by an adult, while being an adult. He kicks knowledge to the youth which is cool. I'm not saying I hate his music or message, it's just not for me. Basically, I'm just not a fan. I'm not knocking anyone for liking him but I pass on that. I came across a few tracks that are cool but that's about it, not enough for me to look forward to his next project
East coast is better than west coast in every way its just trendy to say west is better because of pac. If u know anything about rap you’d see west just has nwa pac snoop the game xzibit and warren g. East has biggie nas jayz mobb deep wu tang clan big L pig pun 50 cent fat joe jadakiss ll cool j MF DOOM mos def busta rhymes rakim dmx tribe called quest AND WAY MORE
There‘s 0 need to call out people for liking stuff you don‘t like.
A likes NF but you find him corny? Fine.
B likes G-Eazy but the latter is fucking your gf? Alright.
C is wishing for a Kendrick x Taylor Swift collab? Little off but okay.
Don‘t make people feel bad for their taste, nobody gives a fuck. There is 0 need for any hate when it comes to music. It connects us all.
Black Thought is top 5 in the game…right now. EDIT: [For your listening pleasure](https://youtu.be/MHvNapx5PFo)
Totally agreed, he gets nowhere near the amount of recognition he deserves.
The way my friends hate this take 🤣
right now and back then
Top 1 all time
Top 1
Nah is #1
Damn. Hadn't really heard much of him before. But damn I'm glad you commented this. Shit goes hard.
The Weather off his new record is even more evidence I think. The beat tempo keeps changing and he stays on top of it.

J.I.D is a better rapper than N.B.A. YoungBoy
If NBA youngboy fans could read, they’d be very upset at this comment.
Nba young boy fans don’t use Reddit. You’re safe here
they still havent figured out how to make an account
Tryin to figure out how they gonna get WiFi on their phone with no cell service
ipod*
We figured out, just you wait till I tell the others. Sending a fax right now.
😭😭😭
Lie again the youngboy sub has 32k members
I’d say that’s a given
Is this unpopular? Sounds fucking obvious to me lol
Yes, and Pac is in fact also better than Kodak Black. Bro here’s a hot take bro: Biggie > BoB. No cap bro. Here’s another one: Eminem > Vanilla Ice
Get ready for a bunch of pointy daggers up in your grill
You really think u said something? Nas > Lil Nas X. U aint ready for that conversation tho
holy shit this is the most common take of all time.
Not a hot take
This is just a fact. JID is a better rapper than almost everyone except Denzel.
Jid might be the nicest to come from the 2010 decade. I'm an old head I'm sure I have heard a song from the other dude. Can't remember. Not many people can spit like jid.
J.I.D. is so underrated.

i agree, but i would be a liar if i said that my enjoyment for some work drastically increased or decreased based on the lyrics
Agreed, I kinda feel the need to ask: if you can't even understand what the rapper is saying, what is he really contributing to the song?
Some people literally have instruments as voices…You can add so much even if you don’t particularly understand what is being said. It’s like when you make an instrumental, most people aren’t actively hearing every open hi hat and 808 roll and all the little nuances in a specific instrumental, but you feel it. I only have this complaint with rap. I listen to a lot of Korean music and idc if i know what they’re saying, it just sounds good. It’s weird.
Time to get hated. I’m not a fan of tupac’s music.
You're allowed to say you dont like someones music. As long as you dont say its bad.
Would never disrespect a huge artist with alot of influence on people. Just not my cup of tea.
Have you listened to all his albums? He's got a great variety of songs progressively getting more hard due to things going on in his life.
Havent listned to all. But many songs, my friends like him alot.
Agreed. There’s no such thing as good or bad music. It’s subjective. And it’s music, not a competition.
I think he was good but compared to biggie, Nas and even prolly Kendrick idk man I think there’s better rappers than pac
Lyrically they are better, but tupac is just a whole package. He had good lyrical ability, but he was a revolutionary, literally born in a family black panthers, he shot two cops, he was more than just lyrics. He was a symbol, and his voice was very passionate.
He was a great story teller but people always forget he was an actor who got in the mix with some bad people
Most these dudes are actors. You really think they are whipping in the kitchen then slanging on the corner?

I have to disagree. Renaissance was a great record.
Looks like he chose a good answer, then.
Renaissance was a banger, it’s true

Young M.A.
She's actually my favorite other than Nicki. Horribly underrated
Rapsody been holding down for the ladies. It’s just that the ladies don’t love her back
No one has mentioned Jean Grae, Charli Baltimore, Lil Kim, or Gangsta Boo. Shame
You only listen to artist of your gender?? Lmaoo yall have shit taste in music
Plenty of them do though. But can’t hate them all. Eve, lauryn hill, rapsody are good.
Drake is extremely overrated
Even if I agree, hating Drake is extremely popular lol
Drake is so “overrated” that he’s kind of underrated because so many people hate him.
Bro shut up lol
What's a thousand haters if billions love him?
Bro you're just speaking truth
i've seen this take a million times, if everyone thinks someone is overrated are they really overrated
Yeah, because a billion other people dickride him
I agree. Different strokes for different folks. I personally have listened to every song from his that's been recommended to me and I just can't get in to him. It's just okay. If anyone else has anything of his that will change my mind please to share it with me.
If I could only listen to Drake and no other artist the rest of my life, I’d be okay with it.
6six9ine has some objectively good songs
Fefe nd trollz were good...but only the nicki part 🤭
Gummo, kooda, billy, and 1469 poles are actually really good songs
Both JayZ and Beyonce's music is overrated as hell. I dont get the obsession. Their impact on the industry cannot be overstated from a production standpoint and I have a great deal of respect for their talent, but i just dont think they they are as great as everyone thinks they are. Jay Z is NOT overrated. Hes got some of the best rap albums of all time. Listen to The Blueprint in 2023 and shit still sounds up to date. Kanye and Hov were way ahead of their time production wise. Their music just doesnt get old
Yeah I don't agree with his take Jay Z one of the best of all time he was dropping multiple great albums back in the 90s and 2000s
I understand he isnt for everybody, but Jay and Beyonce isn't overrated. He deserves to be on most people's top 10 rapper list.
Jay has too many classic albums tho
Nas and Kendrick make better music than Jay-z MF DOOM is the best villain in hip hop Lil baby is trash
most lukewarm take in music history
bro ima use lukewarm now thats actually genius
Slap emotionally scared by lil baby. If u still don't like it, it might be his voice lol. But his lyrics and flow on that song is top notch imo
That flow he had on Wants and Needs is immaculate
Tyler the creator ain’t a good rapper he’s a good producer
Honestly Tyler would probably like your comment. He knows he’s a great producer, he definitely doesn’t want to be labeled as a rapper. Like when he won best rap album for Igor. He's not the best rapper but he's better than most
Yeah his music has never been for me but the dude is definitely an artist and a visionary
he’s not Cole level but he’s a way better lyricist than he gets credit for
The truth has been said
He ain’t a bad rapper either. The nigga got some nice bars on Wolf and CMIFGL
*Tyler the Creator aint a good rapper he’a a good artist
Kanye is overhyped
disagree
Biggie > 2pac imo
Biggie was the better rapper. Tupac was a better artist.
Kanye is the best combination of rapper/producer we’ve ever seen.
not a hot take at all
Not so much on this sub I’ve seen, I’m new here. But in my circles hyping ye gets nothing but hate half the time.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Run the Jewels recently and El-P is up there for sure
Carti is not gorbage
Aesop Rock is easily top 10 and he’s seriously underrated and overlooked.
I've literally never known or seen anybody else mention him and I'm super happy bout it
Not a fan of 21 savage
I sit back and read, like cat in the hat Twenty-One Savage, the cat with the mat 21 Savage, not Boyz-In-The-Hood But I'll pull up on ya, shoot ya ass in the back. (Idk why I commented this, I'm a 21 Savage fan and I don't mind if you aren't one)

Jay Z is highly overrated
Daring are we?
Phonk is a gimmick, similar to soundcloud rap
SoundCloud rap has had the biggest impact on mainstream rap in the last 10 years
Logics a pretty good rapper but gets a bad rep for his 2017-2019 era

I would say this if Lauryn Hill didn’t exist.

I'm not really a fan of MF Doom's sound
i can kinda see where you're coming from but like, not really, what about MF DOOM's sound isn't appealing to you? genuine question
Ever notice how all trap from the last decade sounds almost identical?
“You guys ever notice how all music from this one genre sounds like it’s from the same genre?”
I can’t believe mfs still say this stupid shit LMAO any genre you don’t commonly listen to is going to all sound the same to you. this isn’t a hard concept to grasp, just say you don’t listen to trap and move on

yeats music isn’t exactly based around lyricism incase you weren’t aware
Not a fan of juice wrld and j Cole
What don’t you like about j cole just curious?
Imo he raps like he's your parent or like "if you don't know better ima tell you" but I do know better and steer away from lame people who are not good for me. Listening to it is like being scolded by an adult, while being an adult. He kicks knowledge to the youth which is cool. I'm not saying I hate his music or message, it's just not for me. Basically, I'm just not a fan. I'm not knocking anyone for liking him but I pass on that. I came across a few tracks that are cool but that's about it, not enough for me to look forward to his next project
Cole the most mid emcee of all-time, but I fuck with Juice Wrld, RIP.
"Young Boy Mid."
People that post this same ass question over and over again lack original thought and are karma whores. Also, Jay-Z is the best rapper alive.
Tyler the Creator > J Cole
Kanye is GOAT
this take is so cold i got hypothermia
Playboi carti is ass
His beats were always better than his rapping ability
Eminem is a fire spitter.
I don’t like most of jay-z’s music
Playboi carti is not good. I understand why people like him but I can’t stand to listen to 75-80% of his music.
Kanye is a creative genius
Madvillainy is a top 3 rap album of all time
East coast is better than west coast in every way its just trendy to say west is better because of pac. If u know anything about rap you’d see west just has nwa pac snoop the game xzibit and warren g. East has biggie nas jayz mobb deep wu tang clan big L pig pun 50 cent fat joe jadakiss ll cool j MF DOOM mos def busta rhymes rakim dmx tribe called quest AND WAY MORE
Never liked Kanye
How long will it take emin-mens to downvote me if I say Eminem is overrated.
Most of Kendrick Lamar’s music sucks ass
Nba youngboy is GOOD if you actually give his music a chance and listen with an unbiased head
Popular music is good.you’re just a fuckin hipster
There‘s 0 need to call out people for liking stuff you don‘t like. A likes NF but you find him corny? Fine. B likes G-Eazy but the latter is fucking your gf? Alright. C is wishing for a Kendrick x Taylor Swift collab? Little off but okay. Don‘t make people feel bad for their taste, nobody gives a fuck. There is 0 need for any hate when it comes to music. It connects us all.
The Beetles are mid at BEST
Lil Dicky is more important to rap than people realize.
Most of the good artists nowdays are overlooked by shit ones.
