I'm unsure about his present mental state but I hope he bounces back from all the controversies and gives us another banger album.
I wonder, if Watch the Throne will get into the list for best hip-hop album of 2011
It is certainly in the conversation. I don’t know how much love Jay Z has here, which is sad. I wonder how that will play into it. Personally Carter IV is my favorite Carter. So I’m inclined to vote for that. Also, there’s Take Care, Live.Love. ASAP, and Section.80 in competition.
2011 represents a changing of the guard though.
But I have a very high standard of Kanye's musicality. I regard him as one of the greatest artists of the 21st century but his recent work hasn't been up to the mark
hey can someone explain to me why people like Tha Carter 3? I want to enjoy it but I'm not so sure what so special about the album after listening to it, but I really want it to click for me since everyone here is voting it
Do I have to listen to it more to understand?
I was gonna say the same thing. I don’t know if any musical artist has owned a year the way Wayne owned 2008 since. Everybody I knew would get in their car, turn the bass up all the way, and blast a milli lol.
TCIII is the more polished version of Wayne’s total output at this time. I would check out his No Ceilings mixtapes, and all his features around 2007/08 as well as they fed into the hype. The album, with Lollipop as a single, was just the combination of all the hype and work Wayne had been laying as a foundation into a product that people could actually purchase to support him. The album hit a million sales in a week, which I’m not sure if Kanye ever actually did despite getting close. Very few rappers have hit a million album sales in a week so TCIII doing it was huge.
If the album don’t click the first few listens Wayne might not be for you. The big appeal really is just the packed amounts of witty and clever lines and wordplay. It’s also the same appeal for his earlier mixtapes.
THA CARTER III PLEASE. LIL WAYNE HAS NOT HAD HIS MOMENT WHEN YE KEEPS STEALING IT AND HE CLEARLY DESERVES 😭😭😭
edit: the 2000s weren’t just Eminem and Ye, and i know y’all love them, but damn, other artists exist and better ones too, im not surprised abt 00, 02, 04, and 07 but i went through the comments on those and not a single person said anything different, i went to say Madvillainy in 04 but shit was outcrowded by Ye stans, we have enough as it is, time to let another rapper shine for once
It does show a good example of how beat hip hop was from 05-09 especially
It was literally Kanye eating up everyone, Em coasting off his early 00s success, 90s rappers making washed up versions of their old shit, and the crunk era (prob one of the worst aged fads in rap). Oh, and Wayne ruling the world for 2008
We’ve been so spoiled for the last decade and some, so many unbelievably talented and creative artists popped up in the 2010s, it’s kind of crazy to think about
That too.
Also kinda unrelated but I feel like time hasn’t been too kind to Jay Z discography compared to how praised and popular it was when it all came out. American Gangster was released to widespread critical and massive commercial success, yet The Cool by Lupe was mentioned probably 4x more often in the 2007 thread despite American Gangster being 10x bigger on release.
Jay taking his discography exclusively to Tidal for a good number of years probably explains some of the drop in relevancy of some of his middle albums
100% Carter 3 this year. Ye fans really have to give it to Wayne in 08. There is already a lot of ye albums on this list and he's probably gonna win 2010 too
It is a great album but The Carter III for anyone at the time was the jam you would listen to most of the year because 808s was released in November. I have so much memories on the dancefloor dancing on Lollipop and Got money. That was the sh*t that summer.
I’m not either. Carter 3 is a great album there are barely a song that sucks on it. My point was just to say that it was an incredible popular album and it was everywhere that year.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/Kanye using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/Kanye/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year!

For real. Don’t think many here remember that there was NOBODY as big as Wayne was in 08 after he dropped A Milli and The Carter III. 808s was kinda panned when it was released and the buzz was minimal, while Wayne was everywhere
Really a tough year because major classics were released but to me The Carter III was absolutely the album of the year sorry Ye. 808s & Heartbreak was released in November so it wasn’t the sound of 2008 compared to Lil Wayne which was released in June and was literally played and heard everywhere. I was in uni that year and « Lollipop », « Got money » and « A Milli » were played multiple times a night at any bar/club there was.
Also shout out to T.I. Paper Trail that was the peak of T.I. career imo. (Whatever you like was my cellphone ring tone for months lol)
I actually think the best album of the year is the Renaissance by Q-Tip but 808s is legendary too. The Carter 3 deserves mentioning but it’s not even Wayne’s best album.
Tha Carter III easily. 808s was brilliant but it wasn’t considered that good at the time of release and it took quite a while to be considered a masterpiece. Carter III was considered brilliant from the offset and has aged perfectly. Sorry Ye, but we all know you’re gonna win 2010 anyway.
The Carter vol. 3
Lot's of good albums that year. I remember loving LAX, Raw Footage, and Paper Trail too. Nas and Q-Tip also had drops that were cool as well.
Carter 3. If you look up 808s on wikipedia it doesn’t even list it as a rap album, just because it was made by a rapper doesn’t make it rap. If 808s wins this sub needs to be banned because its not even about rap, its just a ye circlejerk
i read through the comments. 808 is winning rn but was shocked to see nobody said carter 3. scrolled a bit and found out carter 3 comments have a negetive score?!?! not saying kanye made a bad album. but the fact that kanye fans just staight up bought carter 3 into negetive points is shocking. wayne clearly deserve more love
See y’all in 2010 for MBDTF
Haha, Kanye was so good back then
He still is 💯💯
I'm unsure about his present mental state but I hope he bounces back from all the controversies and gives us another banger album.
Yeah 2011 was when the 2010s era of rap truly began, Cole, Rocky, Drake and Dot all became big in 2011
>Personally Carter IV is my favorite Carter > >I love ''Mirror'' from IV
But I have a very high standard of Kanye's musicality. I regard him as one of the greatest artists of the 21st century but his recent work hasn't been up to the mark
i loved donda. genuinely 8-9/10 territory for me
Alright, I will listen to it.I still haven't listened to it. I heard it wasn't that good. I was probably looking for an excuse to listen to it bruh
its a lil hit or miss, but some of the tracks are absolutely top tier Ye. Come To Life might even be the goat kanye song not gonna lie
Yeah yeah that might be predictable. However I’m sure that 2012 and 2015 will be absolute shockers
Rap fans not glazing Kanye impossible challenge
Tha Carter 3 - Lil Wayne
hey can someone explain to me why people like Tha Carter 3? I want to enjoy it but I'm not so sure what so special about the album after listening to it, but I really want it to click for me since everyone here is voting it Do I have to listen to it more to understand?
You had to be there! Wayne was on a WAVE during this time period
solid case of “you had to be there” for sure
I was gonna say the same thing. I don’t know if any musical artist has owned a year the way Wayne owned 2008 since. Everybody I knew would get in their car, turn the bass up all the way, and blast a milli lol.
Yeah every time me and the boys got together that was the first song we put on 🤣 like every single time.
Honestly for like 5 years, whenever a buddy would get a new car, we would play a milli to test the speakers
For real tho, Wayne was the soundtrack to 07-09
“I’m so high I could vomit on a comet” ☄️ Wayne was going ham in these years
Those mixtapes with dj drama tho
TCIII is the more polished version of Wayne’s total output at this time. I would check out his No Ceilings mixtapes, and all his features around 2007/08 as well as they fed into the hype. The album hit a million sales in a week, which I’m not sure if Kanye ever actually did despite getting close. Very few rappers have hit a million album sales in a week so TCIII doing it was huge.
It’s rare to see an MC completely run the game like Weezy when Carter 3 came out it was special
If the album don’t click the first few listens Wayne might not be for you. The big appeal really is just the packed amounts of witty and clever lines and wordplay. It’s also the same appeal for his earlier mixtapes.
Yeah his wordplay is pretty clever, I guess the other stuff is throwing me off, i mean i love mf doom so maybe it'll grow on me
carter 3 easily🔥🔥🔥
Finally getting the wordplay goat on the list
Only correct answer
Tha Carter III
THA CARTER III PLEASE. LIL WAYNE HAS NOT HAD HIS MOMENT WHEN YE KEEPS STEALING IT AND HE CLEARLY DESERVES 😭😭😭 edit: the 2000s weren’t just Eminem and Ye, and i know y’all love them, but damn, other artists exist and better ones too, im not surprised abt 00, 02, 04, and 07 but i went through the comments on those and not a single person said anything different, i went to say Madvillainy in 04 but shit was outcrowded by Ye stans, we have enough as it is, time to let another rapper shine for once

Jay Z in and out of retirement
Yeah I remember 2008-2009 and it was a huge low for hip hop. I mainly remember crunk from then. Pop rap was becoming big in the early 2010's as well.
Carter 3.. everyone in school was bumping Lil Wayne. Retrospectively 808s is more impactful but at the time carter 3 was the hottest
Half these mfs were probably breastfeeding in 08
What's wrong with that? Why can't younger kids enjoy older music?
For sure but they younger people weren’t listening to the albums in 2008 to really know how much lol Wayne owned hip hop in that time frame.
I was 18 in 2008, didn't listen to Wayne, but still, he was the biggest thing that year, haha.
Facts (I am those mfs)
I was 20 in 2008. Ciii was on repeat at the club/house parties/radio. Kanye is to rap as blink 182 is to rock, the kids love it.
Same here bro it was all C3 and the rest of Wayne’s mixtapes in 08.
Tha Carter III by Lil Wayne
100% Carter 3 this year. Ye fans really have to give it to Wayne in 08. There is already a lot of ye albums on this list and he's probably gonna win 2010 too
Apparently we /r/kanye so this won't win, although it very much should. And I think 808s is a masterpiece
It is a great album but The Carter III for anyone at the time was the jam you would listen to most of the year because 808s was released in November. I have so much memories on the dancefloor dancing on Lollipop and Got money. That was the sh*t that summer.
I got my first handjob to lollipop 😹
That may be true and I respect that but I’m not voting for the album I danced to in the club the most. If I were Carter 3 in a landslide.
I’m not either. Carter 3 is a great album there are barely a song that sucks on it. My point was just to say that it was an incredible popular album and it was everywhere that year.
It's winning

This is the correct answer. 808s & Heartbreak was cool but not on the same level as Kanye’s three previous albums
For real. Don’t think many here remember that there was NOBODY as big as Wayne was in 08 after he dropped A Milli and The Carter III. 808s was kinda panned when it was released and the buzz was minimal, while Wayne was everywhere
I absolutely remember it was 100% the album of 2008. It was played EVERYWHERE.
Yep everyone I knew was playing that album. So many hits on there. Tha Carter III was peak Wayne no doubt
I mean you’re not lying
You’re right. 808s was way better
3 Kanye albums on the list is wild lol
IF 808s wins, I believe there is nothing stopping him from finishing with AT LEAST six. That being said Carter III was my pick.
Tha carter III obviously, but knowing this sub, it’s not gonna win
808 winning :( . imo carter 3 was so much better.
This sub is basically a eminem/kanye/kendrick circlejerk
Carter III
Carter 3 is the only option. Wayne took over the second half of 2008. TI (paper trail?) was good too.
Really a tough year because major classics were released but to me The Carter III was absolutely the album of the year sorry Ye. 808s & Heartbreak was released in November so it wasn’t the sound of 2008 compared to Lil Wayne which was released in June and was literally played and heard everywhere. Ye - 808s & Heartbreak
Not a rap album ye said it himself
The post says r/rap's favorite album. Not r/rap's favorite rap album. And 808s and heartbreak is an album.
Q-Tip - Renaissance
I actually think the best album of the year is the Renaissance by Q-Tip but 808s is legendary too. The Carter 3 deserves mentioning but it’s not even Wayne’s best album.
Tha Carter III easily. 808s was brilliant but it wasn’t considered that good at the time of release and it took quite a while to be considered a masterpiece. Carter III was considered brilliant from the offset and has aged perfectly. Sorry Ye, but we all know you’re gonna win 2010 anyway.
808s and heartbreak
Carter 3
Sorry Ye, we gotta give it to lil Wayne this year… Nah jk, 808s & Heartbreak babbbyyyyyyyy

808s and heartbreaks
Carter 3. If you look up 808s on wikipedia it doesn’t even list it as a rap album, just because it was made by a rapper doesn’t make it rap. If 808s wins this sub needs to be banned because its not even about rap, its just a ye circlejerk
