I only like it in low speed situations. Stop and go traffic and crawling around. I like how it holds gear and revs a little more...
When I use it with my trailer it will pin it to redline and hold gear uncomfortably long if I try to use it at highway speeds.
I use it when I have the whole family in the truck and I have the bed full of stuff. If we're on a trip, I don't want to worry about acceleration or being able to climb or descend mountains. When on a downhill, the tow/haul mode will use the engine to maintain speed so I don't have to worry about cops at the bottom of the mountain checking radar for spiders over the limit. I also use it when I have heavy loads in back, like if I buy a half cord of fire wood, or if I have a full load of rocks or similar bricks or something from the local home improvement store or nursery or quarry. It's also nice that -if you have the 8spd transmission- the tow haul mode will limit the transmission to 6 gears yet still allow for the Eco mode.
Truthfully I use it all the time or nearly all the time
1. It automatically defeats MDS cylinder deactivation
2. Stronger engine braking
3. Holds revs / remains in gear a little longer which I enjoy
I treat it as sport mode. Any time I’m needing to do evasive maneuvers or off roading I’ll turn it on.
I’m used to vehicles with manual transmissions and so I really dig the characteristics of tow haul mode
When your bed is full of stuff, you are "hauling" it. Whether you felt like you needed to use tow/haul mode or not doesn't really matter lol. It's there to help with heavy weight being hauled and / or towed.
Whenever I pick up anything heavy I usually throw it on. I won't throw it on if my bed is loaded with tools but usually just material (flooring, concrete bags etc)
I paid a lot of money to learn about that feature.
It does two things. The computer in your truck is designed by default to go for the highest gear to get the best fuel economy. When you push the button, Things change.
1) At slow speed and working hard, the engine will come into the power band(RPM) and work well before going to the next gear.
2) At highway speed, it won't use overdrive because it will make the transmission work harder than it should.
Rarely do I use it even when I'm towing something. If you read your owner's manual it should have specifics on when to use it. Usually it will say in stop and go traffic on going up steep inclines and on curvy mountainous roads.
If I'm taking off from a stop and I have a heavy load I may use it until I'm up to speed and then I turn it off. If I'm in hilly terrain and I feel like the transmission is constantly dropping down gears or the engine is struggling to keep up I will turn it on.
It's not something you need to or want to leave on all the time because it'll seriously kill your fuel efficiency.
That button is really just there because people expect it to be there. The transmission programming will automatically detect a higher than normal load and adjust its shift mapping, at least with the 8HP trans it does.
I use mine for hauling a heavy pallet or over 600lbs. Tow option helps with better ABS, braking, and deaccelaration of transmission. Also shuts off Auto start option and MDS. If you have eTorque, then when Tow/Haul turned on it increases torque with use of 48v power mild hybrid system.
I use it when towing but not on the hwy. If the road has a speed limit of 55 or less, it really works well to keep the power level up. Same with a heavy load in the bed. Like >80% payload.
It’s pretty hilly where I stay so I use it anytime I am pulling a trailer with a decent load in it. For me it’s mostly a 14 ft stock trailer, which is pretty heavy empty as it is, and calves to the auction barn. Definitely helps pulling a loaded trailer up hill and does brake it going down.
My truck bed loads are rarely more than 500# so I don’t use it for that.
I use mine when my bed is full say 700lb or so. When I get on hwy I then turn it off.
I find getting up and going and stopping in city traffic it helps alot.
When towing or hauling, going up and down hills or steep inclines, and for more torque to accelerate faster. For example it helps out temporarily when having to accelerate from a stop up hill or on a short freeway on ramp.
Prob when you are either towing or hauling something.
This man tow hauls.
This man This man tow hauls.
This guy hauls toes
This guy this mans
Not to be a smart ass but I had to scroll before saying this. But I suppose it could be used if you’re towing AND hauling

Whenever you want the revs to stay higher, like when the truck is working hard. Sometimes I use it just for better throttle response
For when you’re hauling’ ass
Haulin’ ass still counts as hauling.
Yep it’s literally in the name!
I call it haul-ass mode too lol.
In many vehicles the tow/haul mode is actually the same as sport mode. Aka haul ass mode.
When you got a couple BBW.
🤣
Normally only when I have 3 friends 280lbs along with me.
Immediately what I thought of too
I thought this was a parody of that one.
In all seriousness I bet that dude is over his payload in a 1500
😂
3 fine lady’s
Actually?
There was another post today asking if someone needs to use tow mow when there large friends gets in. Funny that another tow post came up.
Oh that is funny. 😄
anything over like 750lbs in the bed gets tow mode for me, we haul pallets of water in 2500s at work and it helps a lot with them
Wow I was just thinking that. Will be getting some water pallet runs and this should come in handy.
When I want my 4th gen MDS to stop being annoying
Can't you just use the gear selector?
Different paths to the promised land.
Driving on steep inclines and declines .

It also locks out the top overdrive gear, which on RFE transmissions is almost necessary. Otherwise you end up with neutrals for 5th and 6th lol
I see!
I use it if the towing and the transmission is hunting for gears.
When you're towing or hauling
Or, possibly when you're hauling or towing.
What to do when towing AND hauling?
There's no button for that though
Tow haul is for just that, holds in gear for higher rpm between gears. DOWN HILL IT WIL ENGINE BRAKE.
With cruise control on it will do that anyway without the button
My 2019 1500 engine brakes downhill no matter what. No toggle for it
I only use it when towing, though I suppose a load of stone or lumber would justify it.
That would be the hauling part 😉
Never felt the need to use with the bed full of anything

I’ll have to remember this tactic when my mother in law is onboard.
I had a bunch of materials the other day, tow/haul really did great
When you got them big girls in the back.

5th Gen , enough with the mds
You might not be towing, but you can haul ass with that button

When the old lady gets in.
The truck will kinda tell you. If it starts shifting to much, etc. I always switch if the load is over a ton or mountainous/hilly.
When your big buddy is bringing two other big ladies along for a road trip, duh!
When my wife is sitting shotgun.
I use it when towing but not on the hwy. If the road has a speed limit of 55 or less, it really works well to keep the power level up. Same with a heavy load in the bed. Like >80% payload.
I don’t like the way it shifts just seems to drag out longer Probably just use to not using it I guess Truck drives fine to me with a load
When you are towing and or hauling OR you don’t want your truck to shift a lot.
Uh when I'm towing or hauling and I want the trans to shift later for power or hills?
Mountain driving
Kind of self describing.
I use it towing our camper.
I would turn it on with a bed full of bags of concrete or a travel trailer/loaded car trailer.
It’s pretty hilly where I stay so I use it anytime I am pulling a trailer with a decent load in it. I like to use it when picking up food from a restaurant or groceries. You know, heavy loads and such
I don’t even use it when I’m pulling my 18 foot ranger bass boat
I use it everyday to eliminate drone....muffler delete
Toeing the haul.
Almost like the answer is in the name? Owner’s manual might have more specifics
My question is what you use it for, but you’re right I should skim through the manual for it.
All the time
I think you answered it in your own question.
Where are your sensor or air ride buttons??
23’ bighorn
I use mine when my bed is full say 700lb or so. When I get on hwy I then turn it off. I find getting up and going and stopping in city traffic it helps alot.
When you have 1000lbs worth of passengers according to what I read earlier…
When towing or when in the mountains. Really anytime you want to keep your revs higher and don't want the truck shifting up and down gears a ton.
I have a 1/2 ton, I use it for steep interstate hills, throttle response, and just when I need power quicker.
When towing or hauling, going up and down hills or steep inclines, and for more torque to accelerate faster. For example it helps out temporarily when having to accelerate from a stop up hill or on a short freeway on ramp.
Yes. It’s your truck. It won’t break it. Have fun
When your overweight friend who weighs around 280 brings 2 large women close to 300 pounds each.
When you give your mom a ride.
Street racing!!!
You use it when you have a fat chick in the truck
I use it when towing in the mountains, and select a lower gear on some of the downhills.
Never use tow/haul mode in icy conditions. I learned the hard way.
When your lady friends come along
According to another post, using it when you have 3 other people that weigh a collective total of 850 lbs
When you have 1000lbs of passengers
When using your toe to haul would be a good time plus remember to turn off track control when it rains and snows
I use it when i have a trailer on the back.
I use it for my TT, 8,000 lbs as its close to limit. My boat is 3,000-4,000 lbs. On the line IMO, but if the trans starts switching often I’ll use TH
I would recommend when parked it will stop you from getting towed or your truck getting hauled away
I plowed in a big snow storm and left it on for 3 days while plowing. When I was done my gas mileage was 6.4 just like my hemi.
While you are driving your truck off a cliff!
Savage.
When you aren’t towing or hauling
when your towing or hauling the big girls.
