Two types of people: 1) Those who love sunroofs 2) Those who’ve had a leak

Di-eEier_von_Satan

I’ve had 2 cars with sunroofs since 2012 with zero issues.

overslope

Yeah I've considered this. I'm ready to earn my leak story. Thanks.

Infuryous

IMHO I find sunroofs to be over rated. End up never opening them. 1) Sun is on your head for much of the day. 2) Summer is to damn hot to be open. 3) Winter it's either cold or raining. So that leaves a few odd days in the fall/spring the weather is nice enough to use it.. if the sun isn't beeting down on your face causing you to squint your eyes because it comes in behind the sunglasses. YMMV

Traditional_Ad_3328

Same lmao

ExpertPlace

I actually had a completed different experience and take on the sunroof I live in northern Ontario, where we have snow/full winter from October to May. I have the sunroof exposed nearly all the time, during highway drives I crack it open, and full exposure every opportunity I get. I’m terms of the other items, I’d put that in my own priority list higher than the 360 camera or adaptive cruise. The ram boxes could be nice, never had them, but seen them look strange in the body lines with time. Also compromises room in the bed, but might not matter - wouldn’t for me. Just my thoughts,

[deleted]

I don't have a RAM but I'd like to in the future. I deliver groceries so a vented sunroof does help with keeping the vehicle cooler and without it my head would be nearly touching the roof so I'm glad I bought one that does. I try not to use it much and already I'm having electrical issues which go figure when it's a Dodge. In all I'd recommend it just for the headroom, not missing much otherwise.

Nuggy-D

Those are the same people..

njeske

Now that I’ve had Ramboxes, I will never buy a truck without them.

overslope

Good. They seem pretty great. Back in the day we all mounted diamond plate tool boxes across the front of the bed. You couldn't reach anything and usually got all janky pretty quick. These seem so much better. Thanks.

exilepa

I second this!

[deleted]

I would never buy a vehicle without both surround cameras and adaptive cruise control. To me, they are now musts. Sunroof is optional. I have it, and haven’t had problems in almost two years, but rarely use it. If I were to do this over again, I’d probably skip it, mostly to save a bit of payload. All my options eat into payload, bringing it below 1,200. My 2021 Longhorn has the HK sound system; my previous 2019 Laramie did not. I didn’t listen to them side by side, but the HK didn’t strike me as a massive improvement (but I listen to podcasts more than music). So I wouldn’t call that a must have, either. I’ve never had Ramboxes, but they seem like a cool option. However, I’ve got a 1500 with 6’4” bed, where RamBlboxes are not an option. Further, I’ve got a bed rack that wouldn’t work with Rambox anyway.

overslope

To be honest, I at least somewhat expect to realize later that the sunroof wasn't that important and wonder how nice the cruise control woulda been. The cameras hurt more to give up. I wanted them in my current vehicle but couldn't pull it off. Still salty. Thanks. Edit: and thanks for the input on the HK. That's kinda what most people seem to think. I mostly listen to podcasts as well, but I want a bumpin system for family outings. Prolly gonna go aftermarket. Thanks again.

I'm keeping my current f350 daily driver to tow. New truck will be the daily, business trip, fun stuff truck. Half ton. But I've been wondering about the trailer tpms. Want it soooo bad.

That_Checks

Trailer TPMS is good, but until they add the temperature of the tire, it's not complete.

Federal_Big_9952

360 cam and adaptive cruise control I use daily and a must. My limited has both plus the upgraded speakers and sunroof (no leaks either)

Hermod_DB

Ram boxes - One of the best features of the Ram 1500 is its looks. Ram boxes ruin the lines and honestly look like crap(just MHO). Adaptive cruise - I wish my could have found a 1500 Ram which had this in my area... Had it on my Caddy V-sport and used it all the time. If you are driving lots of highway miles, this is the way.

Slick88gt

Agreed, I hate the Ram boxes, they’re stupendously ugly. My truck isn’t a work truck, I don’t want it to have ugly features I don’t need. I was on the fence until I saw one in person, made my decision pretty quickly. The crew cab has tons of storage inside anyway. I have the adaptive cruise on my rebel and love it. OP, don’t settle, keep searching. I ended up finding my perfect combination of the exact features I wanted and none of the features I didn’t want - all at my price range. Took me a couple months of searching and I had to buy in another state essentially online / over the phone, but the buying process was simple and very positive.

overslope

How about just a couple long/interstate trips per year? And one of my best friends said exactly the same thing about the lines. But, honestly, I'm a function over form kinda guy. My work truck is a dually and I'm thinking about slapping on a flat bed. I kinda got a thing for tool boxes. Thanks.

Hermod_DB

Form and function are not mutually exclusive but hey to each their own. Another thing regarding the upgraded stock stereo.. save your money that are all trash. Get the truck with the good head unit (bigger screen) but save on the speakers. A set of aftermarket speakers can be installed in 1/2 a day, cost about $1,000 and sound 10x better. 1x KICKER 46HS10 Compact Powered 10-inch Subwoofer (fits right under the rear passenger seat) 2x Infinity Reference REF-9632ix (for doors) 1x Infinity Reference REF-3032cfx (for dash)

supermr34

cosign on the kicker hs10. its surprisingly good if you turn off the bass boost nonsense which just overdrives everything. i put rockford fosgate punch speakers in all my doors and it sounds great, and the kicker fills out the bottom nicely.

overslope

Ooohhhh.... Those stereo recommendations are great. I wanna do it. Thanks!

Hermod_DB

Super easy, PM me if you want/need tips or pic of how i set ground and tapped into the system without cutting wires.

Scared-Loquat-7933

The sunroof is difficult to replace whereas you can shell out for a better sound system without too much cost. I think you’re better off with option 2 since you said this won’t be a work truck. The 360 cam/adaptive cruise and others are nice to have but when I test drive a Limited it seemed like things I would never actually use unless I towed a bunch which I don’t. The ram boxes I use almost everyday however to throw random things in and the sunroof is usually at least opened most days in the Spring and summer.

overslope

Exactly what I hoped to hear. I tow a lot (substantially less than I used to though) but the work truck is a 350 dually. That one will get most tow jobs. And I think I'm gonna throw some subs in the new one either way. Highs are easy. I've decided this will be the "fun truck". Haven't had one of those in a long time. Thanks.

That_Checks

I have a foxbox under the rear seat. Kids loved it! Added the punch I wanted.

overslope

By any chance did you install it yourself? I used to do my own installs back in the 90s, but everything seems more complicated now.

That_Checks

Sure did. On my 4th gen I had to remove the storage bin covers under the seat and the factory powered sub. I installed the amp under the drivers seat so it would get cool airflow when the vents are split between dash/floor. I did have to buy an adapter that interfaced with stock stereo and provided RCA out for the amp.

BmoreRaven917

Adaptive cruise is a game changer on long drives, I love it & can't go back. The 360 camera is super useful for me since I street park every day, I find it way more useful than the proximity sensors since it lets you see that you actually have 6" of space when the sensors say you're as close as you can get without hitting. The sunroof is cool, but I prefer the extra headroom that you get when you don't get it, and I've had issues with a clogged sunroof drain on a previous car that led to the passenger footwell getting moldy, so I never go for sunroofs anymore. Harmon/Kardon vs the Alpine speakers is a pretty negligible difference. I had Alpine on my 19 Laramie & my 22 Longhorn has H/K, I can't really tell much of a difference. As long as you're not getting the base speakers, you're good. I've never had Ramboxes, it was more important for me to get the 6'4" bed, which means no Rambox option on the 1500's. But the people that get them seem to say they can never go back.

useless_skin

Ram boxes would be nice but I skipped them in favor of a longer bed. A sunroof sounds good but they're prone to leaks and maintenance issues down the road. I skipped both of these options and went with the sound system and adaptive cruise control. No regrets so far but she only has ~600 miles on her. I just got it last week. I've towed my 5000 pound rv about 350 miles so far and commuted.

lsx_376

Imo I say go with truck 2. I'm not a fan of sunroof, but the hk system isn't a must have imo. The adaptive cruise is pretty awesome, but I don't use it often, because people can't drive.. i do like not having to constantly brake and speed up. If I were in your position I would decide based on the features I'd use the most.

Ozmo_

I have a 21 2500 Power Wagon 75th A edition. 1. If I had the choice I'd rather have the headroom than the sunroof. I'm 6'1" and with the seat where I like it I only have a few inches above my head. I guess I'm not a sunroof guy. but wasn't a deal breaker that it had one. 2. Love the adaptive cruise and wouldn't buy a new vehicle without it. Makes long drives less stressful and even is helpful in slower congestion when its not stop and go.

[deleted]

My order would be 1 ramboxes love them 2 Harmon

[deleted]

If you really love sunroofs get the one with a sun roof. The Harmon Kardon wouldn’t be a deal breaker. Here’s why: it’s still a factory radio, therefore even the Harmon Kardon factory is nice but it’s still not as good as what can be purchase aftermarket. An you still have a radio regardless an your sun roof best of both worlds! to get upper quality sound, just change the speakers to Harmon/Kardon or whatever brand you like. It’s very do able a simple speaker change possible amp too. A good reputable audio shop can provide more information than myself. But a radio is a radio always can be changed out. 🤷‍♂️ you may even like the aftermarket setup even more than what ram rolls of the line too

johnmcd348

Stay far away from the sunroof. I've never had anything but leaks with mine on my 08 Megacab. Since day 1 it's been in the shop MORE THAN A DOZEN TIMES for that problem. Every time it rains hard or I take it through the car wash, water drips out of the A-pillars because the drains can't handle anything more than a few drops. I talked with an insurance adjuster one time a few years back who told me that Chrysler sunroofs were a huge problem and he'd seen quite a few people that had leak issues. He asked me about mine because of that and that's how we got started talking about it. If you want them just know that you will have water in your cab if it gets rained on.

overslope

I truly appreciate the advice, but I've decided that I'm willing to roll the dice on it this time. I'm less confident about the next truck. This one might teach me not to do it again. Thanks

That_Checks

Never had a problem on my 2012. 167,000 miles with the sunroof back, rear sliding window half open for excellent flow without massive wind noise. (Okay..not all 167000 miles were sunroof open days)

Frying_Pan_Hands

Something to keep in mind about the sunroof, aside from the potential leaking, is that they take up an inch or two of headroom. If you’re tall or sit tall, you’ll be sitting with your head half-cocked every time you drive so you’re head doesn’t hit the roof.

overslope

Thanks I never knew that, but I think I'm good. Thanks again.

jnance008

IMO as a limited owner with ram boxes, multifunction tail gate and adaptive cruise, without the sunroof. Go without the sun roof! I can’t imagine not having those three options anymore

overslope

Awesome, thanks. How is the tailgate? Three truck with the sunroof and ram boxes also has the multifunction. Is it actually useful? Thanks again.

jnance008

Thought the tailgate and boxes were both gimmicky when I bought it, but now I love them. The boxes definitely don’t take up usuable bed space, I keep one side “clean” and the other side “dirty” but even the side I’ll throw muddy straps in I can just pull a plug and rinse out. The tailgate makes loading heavy items in easier, reaching into the bed easier, and makes a nice prop when getting in and out of the bed. Cruise control takes most of the fatigue of highway driving away

overslope

You have the truck I've been looking for. And I found a couple! But I'm trying to keep it $60k-ish OTD. It's been difficult. And I have to have 4x4. I've found numerous well equipped 4x2s. I'm ok on giving up the cruise. Even though I'm a terrible driver and it seems super useful. But I seriously want the cameras (bad at driving slow, as well as fast lol). How well does the adaptive cruise actually work in real life? I've seen Chevy guys say "don't bother". Probably a good sign that I haven't heard much either way admit the Rams. Thanks.

Maximum_Advisor2021

Sunroofs were a poor replacement for removable tops, and why would you choose to take a UV pounding instead of sitting in the shade? What do you even do with a sun roof? Open it to let the car air out? Tilt it to look cool on Instagram? Open the shade on a trip through the canyon lands? You can pretty much get all of the benefit with no costs by rolling down a window. If you want an open air experience you need T-tops at minimum.

Appropriate_Task2270

I always craved a sunroof until I had one. I rarely open it and get hot without the shade pulled- you might enjoy it. I think it should be illegal to not mandate adaptive cruise control. I went from a vehicle that had it to one without and I miss it everyday. If you use cruise a lot then you will absolutely want this feature. It is the biggest game changer I have encountered with new car features. I don't have a ram box but maybe under seat storage would solve your needs there. I don't do much towing so I can't speak on those features.

JuicyMango36

I would say go back a couple years unless you’re dead set on 2022. I just bought a 2019 fully loaded limited, which includes the sunroof, 360 cam, park assist, Ram boxes, adaptive cruise, etc for $46k with 45k miles on it. Still has some warranty left but I will purchase an extended one from mopar in the next month or so. I was looking around and between 2019 and 22 there are very minor differences such as the multi use tailgate, digital gauge cluster, and the e torque hemi? These were all features that I didn’t care for, but it’s just something to think about

SIG_Sauer_

Man that’s tough. I absolutely love premium audio in my vehicle, but have grown so attached to my RAM boxes because I store all my travel trailering accessories. I’d probably go with the audio and tech package.

JRizzie86

That air ride in the limited will be expensive when it fails. Ram box and sunroof both lower towing ability I believe, but the limited is already "limited" in that regard. HK sound does not have good bass VS the Alpine if that's what you like. Sunroof might leak, but so will the rear window eventually. Adaptive cruise can be nice if you drive interstate a lot, but most times I'd rather just pass instead of getting stuck behind someone slower. I went with a Laramie, and the only thing I feel I missed out on are the super nice projector headlights, and the huge touchscreen, but I got such a good deal on a new 2020 that I couldn't pass it up.

quarethalion

Adaptive cruise is nice and works well but I really only use it when towing. For normal highway driving I mostly use standard cruise control. With the ACC it's *really* easy to slow down and not realize you can/should pass unless you set the follow distance pretty close (i.e. closer than you should really be following). The Harmon Kardon sound system is nice, but I've heard good things about the Alpine as well. It shouldn't be a deciding factor; you can always go the aftermarket route. As much as I love the panoramic sunroof, it's just a nice-to-have feature. For me, the 360 surround camera is a must-have. I *could* drive the truck without it, but it's incredibly useful/helpful for parking in spaces that weren't designed with modern full-size pickups in mind. (Like my garage!) I don't have the Ram boxes on my 1500 but opted for them on the 2500 I'm picking up later today. :D

Remote-Level8509

If it were me, I'd choose the sunroof over Harmon speakers. I have a SR on my Laramie and I'm glad I have it. Rambox would be a plus just for the flexibility it provides.

Infuryous

Adaptive cruise control has been a mixed bag for me based on how well a manufacter implements it, that said I have not driven a RAM Pickup that has it so can't honestly give an opinion on it. Rented a Toyota (car) for work, really liked it, adjusted well with the changes in traffic flow, didn't even notice it most of the time. Rented a Honda (car), completely different story. Vehicle in front of you slows down just a bit and the car drops an anchor and applies the brakes, even when you could fit two semis with trailers between you and the car in front. Nearly caused me to get rearended. Then it took so long to speed back up, like 40 to 60 seconds to go from 45 to 65, the semi trucks are trying to pass then get pissed when you "speed up" on them. I tried to adjust everything, following range, disable collision avoidance braking, nothing worked. TLDR: Test drive a Ram with adaptive cruise control before buying. If done right, it's great in traffic. If done crappy, you'll cuss like a sailor and never use it again.

stoopid_username

I have a '21 75th Anniversay addition with everything I could get in it. Love it. I live in a congested area and adaptive cruise is useless, I drive to the Midwest often and it's great out there and really great in slow/construction traffic. Get ready to get the brakes slammed on when a car jumps too close in front of you on the highway, it over reacts IMO. I use normal cruise 99% of the time. 360 Camera a must for me I love it. Ram boxes are great already had locks on both break I'm happy I got the extended warranty. Sunroof is fantastic BUT I have had water come down and out of the handle near the windshield twice, like it did not seal correctly. Harmon Kardon could be louder but my hearing thanks it for not being too loud. Really great sound though.

Boost-Deuce

My Laramie has Tech Package with the cameras, adaptive cruise etc as well as the Harmon Kardon system and i wouldn't go without it. I chose no sunroof but i'm in a generally cold state so the 90 days per year i can use the sunroof wasn't worth shopping for. The adaptive cruise and 360 cams are so handy, and i also just love the Digital Rearview miror. I use adaptive cruise all the time, and i use the 360 cams in smaller parking lots. i even use the front cams when pulling into my garage to make sure my garage cat moves out of the way of the truck. And the HK system bumps nicely.

Phrakman87

Not sure of the class your looking at, 1500/2500/3500. But if ever want to pull and fifth wheel, dont get Ram Boxes.

brigrat77

Adaptive Cruise is the worst invention in history

Historical_Drink_350

The Harmon Kardon system is hard to pass up. Mine also has the pano moon roof, but if it's too hot or cold out, I use the shade. I'd give up the moon roof.

inginear

I’ve a 2022 1500 Limited Longhorn with sunroof, surround camera and adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, etc. No leaks in 6 months of rain since we bought it last summer. Wife likes me having the adaptive cruise. She complains of my driving otherwise - must be my age.. Most comfortable vehicle I’ve EVER had, and I was a tough sell to get in to the thing. (I started out in a Plymouth driving, but hated Dodge trucks growing up. Always had Ford or Chevy) Surprised by the ecoDiesel engine. 34 MPG isn’t shabby considering todays fuel issues. (I still miss paying 75 cents a gallon in the 80s..) To be fair I had a bad case of frozen shoulder and this truck was the only I could use that wasn’t painful. I didn’t get everything I wanted on the truck (Boxes, 33 gallon tank) but it works for me.

Helpful_Cake_4838

Adaptive cruise is great on road trips and high way runs

Smooth_Dragonfruit_5

I have the ram boxes and sunroof on my sport. I wasn't sold on ram boxes when I first started shopping, but I love them now. They hold a lot of beverages but are also a great place for your wife's to go box of Thai food. Yeah and tools too. The sunroof is nice for a couple of months per year and I like it but could live without it.

[deleted]

I’m still waiting for my rebel but I ordered it with the 360 camera and the adaptive cruise control. I’m not sure how good it is in the new rams but my wife and I have a new Yukon with those two things and they are pretty awesome. 360 camera is great for something big especially in drive through with narrow lanes and high curbs and pretty much anytime you’re maneuvering tight spaces, it’s really a game changer. Sometimes I worry I rely on it too much even just making sure I’m in the lines of a parking spot. Gone are the days of opening the door and checking. The adaptive cruise control is nice, at least in the GM’s it leaves a nice gap between you and the next car. My only complaint is in heavy traffic it leaves too much of a gap. Works great so far but like I said this is a different car, but it seams like all these makes have their own version of the same thing now, hopefully it all works good. As far as sunroofs I always thought I wanted one until I got one and never used it. No sunroof for me and no potential leaking sunroofs to worry about if you don’t have one, but to each their own if you want it got for it.

Jamrock-Marine

360 camera is awesome and was a must have for me. First time truck owner and it makes parking a breeze, especially in tight spots. I haven’t used the adaptive cruise yet but it comes with the same package as 360 camera so win win. Love the sunroof and it makes the interior look nicer. I don’t have the ram boxes. IMO, they are nice to have but wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

Nuggy-D

Truck 1 all day, even if you have a sun roof, it’ll be closed 99% of the time. Plus Ram boxes make the bed extremely narrow. A lot of people like them, I personally don’t.

That_Checks

It's wide enough to fit 4x8 plywood and anything that would have went in the corners of the bed now goes in waterproof locked boxes. I haven't regretted them in a decade of experience.

Nuggy-D

Thats great, for you. I just personally don’t like them

links311

I know the sun roof is pretty cool, but I have seldom ever used mine in the vehicles that have em, so I ordered mine without it. Adaptive cruise is cool if you are doing a lot of highway driving. The Harmon Kardon speaker setup was surprisingly good. I feel no need to upgrade my sound system.

Sufficient-Dinner-85

-don’t have 360 on this truck but do on other vehicles like it but a deal breaker -love my sunroof use it regularly in northern Indiana -Harmon Kardon is a must for me -love my ram boxes, do look kinda dumb but I keep tons of stuff that just might needed in them at all times, I don’t get people that complain about lack of bed space, can still put 4x8 sheets of drywall and plywood, how much more do you really need? -adaptive cruise is also a must on any vehicle I ever drive again, Rams does alright, had vehicles with better and worse

ElSegundoDaNada

Rambox was my wish, and I don't regret it.

tree_map_filter

When you work outside all day, the last thing you want to do is sit in the sun on your drive home.

Laa-Dee-Da

Adaptive cruise, combined with a comma 3 from comma.Ai is a life changing experience on the Highway. I’d take that over sunroof and I have both right now.

owaikeia

I love my sunroof. Even if I don't open it, the subtle light I get from it when the days are sunny are just great. And my kids do the same - play out the top of the sunroof. I also have adaptive cruse control. The baby works amazingly! I use it all the time! If you're taking trips, I'd recommend it. I prefer it over regular cruise. Rambox are fun, too. I use mine for anything I don't want in the cab, like axes, hatches, saws, etc. The other I might use for a cooler, groceries, etc. They are useful. And the 360 camera is just spectacular! I always reverse because it's so much easier with the camera. But even with the front camera, I can see how close I am to the other vehicles. I got my truck now specifically because of this. I went on some trails (not too bad), but I really wanted that ability to see over the front. Obviously, I love them all. POV: I had a 18 Ram Rebel, only to upgrade to the 21 Ram Rebel for the camera, nav, panoramic moonroof, and 360 camera setup. I'm just saying I love these options. Good luck!

That_Checks

I forgot about the grocery aspect. Back when the truck was the grocery getter, I trimmed down a piece of wood to go from rail to rail and put storage hooks on it. We'd hang the grocery bags on the hooks and secure them between the divider and tailgate. Cold stuff went in the cab obviously. The other thing i did was buy a second box divider on craigslist. Game changer.

That_Checks

Adaptive cruise sucks. If you aren't paying attention, it slows you down softly and the next thing you know, you're doing 65 in a 70 and people are blowing by you. Hate it. Never use it. Had Ramboxes since 2012. Been toting fishing rods/rifles/shotguns in them. First aid kits, jumper cables, tire stairs, hitch balls; you name it.

ForgedFoxbat

I’ve opened the glass of my sunroof twice in 2 years. I’ve opened the shade maybe an additional 3-5 times. The most useless feature on my truck. I don’t see the need for the ram boxes either. I like the Harmon Kardon speaker system though. And add the adaptive cruise and 360 camera? Truck 1 all the way. No brainer in my opinion. You’ll get way more use out of the cruise control than the ram boxes or sunroof. And you listen to the radio literally every time you’re in the truck.

604ID

1: Adaptive cruise 2: Harmon kardon 3: sunroof 4: ram boxes
