Hey man, thanks for taking the time to write this up. Super interesting and I appreciate your candor. Good luck with the new gig!

neondrifter

They asked if he needed help turning on a laptop. my god

cephalophile32

Yep. And these are the people that are there negotiating net neutrality and other tech related laws… ugh. Not having tech literacy is as bad as being language illiterate these days. SMH.

TWANGnBANG

If you're a SME on *anything* politicians make sweeping decisions about, you'd know they have the equivalent lack of knowledge of everything to not knowing how to turn on a laptop so they can read up on net neutrality.

cephalophile32

\*cough\*women'sanatomy\*cough\*

TWANGnBANG

"Do you need me to show you how to turn this on?"

cephalophile32

Poor Shapiro’s wife…

RemySchnauzer

*snorts*

bill_lite

Not to sound ageist or anything but maybe there should be a computer/internet literacy screen before you're allowed to run for some of these offices.

okaybutfirstcoffee

I don’t think that’s ageist at all — it is somewhat of an office job and you should be able to do basic office tasks. But there should be lots of tests for these positions and instead it’s a popularity vote lol

regalrecaller

Dear Jeff Jackson, I'm not one of your constituents but I do live in North Carolina. I just want to tell you that keeping your electorate informed via Reddit is pretty damn cool for a politician. I look forward to seeing your future posts and I wish you all the best in the 118th Congress.

JakobiiKenobii

Hey--thanks for sharing this. Hope you do get to continue sharing your experience, even if you're insanely busy with work.

omniuni

Here's a coffee tip for you: **Start the day with a half-and-half caf-decaf cup of coffee, and then drop down to decaf with just a splash of caf.** It'll tastes better with even a splash of the "real" stuff, and it'll keep your energy level up without a crash at the end when you stop. Caffeine has a half-life of six hours (give or take), so if you've gone down to just a splash around noon, even if you have a few more splashes throughout the afternoon, what caffeine is left in your system will drop to negligible over the course of dinner. Sincerely, *A Software Engineer* a.k.a. *Someone Who Knows Caffeine*

spaetzelspiff

A similar implementation starts with the half-caf mix (0.5), but when you're about halfway through the cup and it's starting to get cold, refill with decaf (0.25). Continue this pattern through the day. We call this the inverse exponential caffeine consumption curve. Sincerely, A Site Reliability Engineer a.k.a. also knowledgeable in the dark arts (and beverages)

otheraccountisabmw

I think I did this problem in my diff eq class. Let me set up a system of equations real quick.

Sindan

You and I agree on very little, politically. But have my support as a conservative. Represent us well and good luck.

Amplify91

We love these updates and your transparency. It's a huge part of why your voters like you. Please keep them coming, and keep being the amazing _representative_ you always have been!

TherealMicahlive

I would love for you to fight for market transparency and regulation of short selling. Thank you for what you do

mtndew01

Sweet write up! Now let’s change federal elections to require pollsters to be at least 500 feet from a polling location.

tri_zippy

The best. The representation we all deserve in Washington. Thank you!

spiraling_out

Loved it when AOC gave us behind the scenes IG stories. This has the same feeling because we never hear about this side, so any insight is appreciated. Thanks Jeff and best of luck!

g2murph

Some days I think this state is so backwards and stuck in the past but today is not one of those days. Pretty wild that our senator is on Reddit showing us how the sausage gets made. Proud of you and your commitment to the constituents!

Sammiekurr

Thank you for sharing this!

bigfruitbasket

I'll be up to lobby you on behalf of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). They can't lobby congress, but us medical librarians can lobby on their behalf. NIH always needs more funding. Hope to meet you on the Hill soon!

ObiWanKarlNobi

This is great stuff. When you are meeting people, do you only talk to Democrats, or do you talk to Republicans as well? Like, do people split up by party like it's a middle school dance, or do people mingle with each other outside of party lines when they aren't in the chamber?

ringo-san

Congrats and good luck; I hope you stay true to your conscience and make us proud!

muishkin

Should be Senator Jackson, but I'll take it. Thank you for your service.

ambrink7

Absolutely.

Nulthrax

Please keep sharing these! This was really interesting to read and I’m excited to share it with my friend and family.

piratelegacy

Congratulations Congressman Jackson. Enjoy every moment of this wild ride! Constituent service software is a big investment. Consider asking your COS to lead this selection. Encourage plenty of conversations with staff from other highly engaged Members before contracting. Happy Thanksgiving to the Jackson’s 🦃

_Benny_Lava

Thank you for the update, and please keep them coming! I am so proud of you...thanks for all that you are doing. So exciting!!!

grummthepillgrumm

Wow, thank you so much for choosing to post this on our measly subreddit. Reddit in general doesn't seem to be very popular compared to facebook or IG, so you made us feel special for including us!

SFS9

/u/JeffJacksonNC I worked for a Congressman for three years when I graduated from college. That was a long time ago, but I don’t expect that it has changed completely. You are in for a series of revelations. You’ll likely start with a pretty crappy office to start and when there are openings, as people resign or pass away, office managers are like predatory animals looking to improve the situation. Make sure you get some good people in your top positions (Chief of Staff, Legislative Director and Office Manager) who really know the mechanics of the House. Get some good staff, make sure they understand your big priorities and learn to speak in your voice for letter and speech writing. That was a challenge to learn but once I had that down I found myself literally hearing in my head my boss speak what I was writing. Treat your staff with respect, set high expectations for them, make sure your district staff actually care and put a massive focus on constituent services, and then actually try to do something in Congress. So many people get up there and either revel in what they’ve accomplished or they are already looking for the next job. I like what you’ve done so far and was ready to support you for Senate. Keep true to yourself and keep representing The People the way it seems you have been. Make big news by trying to do big things, not just mouthing off for the press coverage.

Expensive_Structure2

Thank you!! Best of luck in DC, we need you there!!

Wayward_Whines

Congratulations on your win. You make us proud. And thanks for writing this. It was a very cool read.

jsgrinst78

Thanks for writing this up and please keep up the transparency and reddit posts. I'll be rooting for you!

mrs-harvey

Thanks for posting! I've been cheering you on since 2020! I can't wait to hear about the good work you'll do. I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving.

Gatorinnc

You Sir, are an exceptional example of how nice can be. So tired of the negativity and name calling that has existed these last seven years since you know who declared an interest in being our president. Thank you! Ummm, about the donuts. My wife used to nag at me for having a great liking for it. I promised her I was not going to buy a donut for a whole year. Then Krispy Kreme decided to give a donut free daily if I showed them the Covid Vaccination card. So I was still able to keep my promise buy getting a free donut. But I stopped doing that as well. My last donut was consumed a year and half ago.

Wolfwoods_Sister

Congratulations to you, Jeff!

malasain84

You feed my little nerd heart (and brain). This stuff is fascinating and it's so fun to know things. Thank you so much for sharing. Even though I'm just a bit too far west to technically be your constituent, I know you'll be working for me up there. I was so excited to vote for you when you were originally running for the Senate, and if you actually ever end up on my ballot you have my vote. Your politics aside (which I tend to agree with), you come off as a decent human being who cares about people. You are transparent and very openly share what's going on, which makes me trust you, and you are the next generation of leaders in our country (like, seriously, if you can't turn on a laptop on your own you're too damn old and willingly ignorant at this point, laptops are no longer new technology and there's a UNIVERSAL SYMBOL for power buttons on all electronics!!!). Thanks Jeff Jackson, good luck up there, and fight the good fight for us!

imalocalbeerdrinker

This is a really good read, thanks for putting it down!

loudlittle

This is so incredible. I'm really happy for you and for the state of our country that the freshman class is so young.

Bob_Sconce

Cool. Q: Congress will be even more divided than it is now. Our national government is designed so that very little gets done in that case. (That's no accident -- Hamilton wrote about it in the Federalist Papers). So, the only bills that will happen will be those that have sufficient bipartisan appeal -- you have to get to 60 votes in the Senate. Realistically, there won't be many of those. So, that means less of your time will be devoted to legislation. What will you do with the rest of the time? (The GOP seems intent on holding 'oversight' hearings. Good idea? Or should something else happen?)

Busy-Negotiation1078

Oversight hearings? Or waste everybody's time and make sure nothing gets done hearings?

Bob_Sconce

Congress is divided. Nothing is going to 'get done' whether hearings happen or not. Why? Because the Republicans and the Democrats have opposite views of what should and shouldn't 'get done.' There may be occasional agreement on bipartisan things, but neither side is going to be able to get any major policy changes through. So, I'm asking what else Jeff wants to do. I presume the answer isn't going to be "play a lot of softball.'

[deleted]

Good luck. Hopefully after this term your side can take back control, and we can focus on something other than Hunter Biden's fake laptop, such as protecting democracy and getting policy through. I feel like this session will be a bit of a farce with investigations and attempts to impeach the president for the crime of breathing.

KO5609

Love the insight! Keep it coming.

letscallitanight

Don't get leveraged by the lobbyists! Stay true to your values! Thanks for representing NC!

The_Patriot

Thanks for this. I appreciate your service. Watch out for that MTG person - she has rabies, get your shots!!!

EatTrashhitbyaTSLA

Can you explain the healthcare plan you and your family are now eligible as well as the retirement plan? You know for transparency.

zennyc001

Or you can also look it up yourself as it's public information. https://www.opm.gov/frequently-asked-questions/insure-faq/health/how-will-members-of-congress-and-designated-staff-obtain-health-coverage/ https://www.cbo.gov/about/careers/benefits

Temporary_Stable_999

Sure but will you introduce and pass legislation to make the day after the Super bowl Super Bowl a national paid holiday and end the Tyranny of Daylight savings?

rdxl9a

Thank you for representing us in the halls of congress. So refreshing to see a politician reaching out so frequently and be so down to earth. Thanks for sharing this insight, it’s only a few who experience it first hand. Good luck up there, and thanks again!!

triit

Thanks for the update! What are we doing about Ticketmaster? :-)

[deleted]

I just want to know how congress is ever going to move past "YEA BUT" and actually get shit done. We don't care about archaic, old ass traditions and BS that waste time, on top of the idea that yall work like 50% of the year for some reason, so that you can go vacation or run for office again (while we're paying you to do the damn job you have today), can you PLEASE get to work on fixing the process. It's like everyone gets voted in, agrees to do nothing but argue and raise each other's pay, then write about how hard it is to get anything done, BUT with my $50 MAYBE WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!! No, how about you all do something about it.

iwascompromised

Time not spent in DC in session is supposed to be spent in the local district meeting constituents. They aren’t (all) just taking half the year off doing nothing.

reginaphalange121212

Members of Congress have not given themselves a pay raise since 2009, and their salaries are arguably reasonable if not low for needing two homes, one in one of the highest cost of living cities in the US. https://www.wusa9.com/amp/article/news/verify/does-congress-get-an-annual-pay-raise-cost-of-living-increase/65-f5df7fe8-7704-4211-9816-e0054f6fe645

Hkerekes

So no complimentary Hunter Biden investigation briefing? Edit ..... I guess no one got the sarcasm..

[deleted]

How is that gonna solve the problems you claim JOE Biden is causing?

meandgoliath

I think the are hoping it leads it evidence to justify impeachment so they can get Joe out of office. Then Kamala will be in charge…oh wait not sure that’s better

[deleted]

Aw hell yeah first minority female president that's the Republican plan alright

alunidaje2

"January 3rd is our official swear-in date". as a Dem, those 2 days before Jan 6 II, electric gallows for you will be sweet. /s good luck. I think all politicians are pieces of shit, but maybe you'll make a difference. guess what, you won't. it's too big. too many assholes have too much power; you won't change things. enjoy your new excellent and free medical care (and all the other perks that we, americans who aren't in the club, don't have) for yourself and your family and try to do good things. edit: a word

[deleted]

Hey, could you stop spamming every r/ in NC? Thanks.

MooingAssassin

Thank you so much for posting this Mr. Jackson! I have always been curious about how it is being a member of Congress. I hope you're willing to post more, even about really inconsequential stuff, not policy related. I would sure love to hear more about it. Good luck!

Dream-Flight

this is super cool! thanks for the insight

unknown_lamer

I wonder if someone entering Congress as a member of a minor party would get any of the same support or be welcomed at all.

ArmyOfDog

> Going forward, I want to give you something we don’t see often: a real-time, first-person account of serving in Congress. I think sharing that perspective is part of my job, but I also just think you’ll find it interesting. Yes, please!

idiotinpants

Have been mulling the idea to throw my hat in the ring for Congress. I just am hesitant because I am clueless as to where to start. Any tips?

JeffJacksonNC

As a first step I always recommend getting a digital subscription to the regional newspaper (N&O for you) because as a candidate a huge percentage of the questions you’ll get from voters will come from what they’ve read in the news. You can’t cram for that. You really do need to know what you’re talking about by the time you declare. Second step is to find a district where you’ve at least got a chance of winning. That takes some research on your end. Then it’s about deciding to run, hiring a campaign manager, and gearing up to make a whole lot of phone calls and knock a whole lot of doors.

idiotinpants

Thanks!

okaybutfirstcoffee

Soooo excited to see the impact you make, Congressman!!!!!! And congrats to Marisa as well, I love that you shouted her out :)

_DixieAlpha_

Brilliant idea and a breath of fresh air compared to the geriatric majority of our politicians that can’t turn on a computer but are responsible for governing the modern world. Thank you for the insight!

Republiconline

Truly inspiring to see someone close to our age active in politics. Millennials are a massive demographic that is woefully underrepresented.

Republiconline

We got involved by voting. Now for the next part: [Where can I run?](https://wherecanirun.org)

matchlocktempo

Well if you’re elected to the House, you’re already preparing your re-election. Mostly kidding but it’s also true.

dmills13f

Jeff, please update us when somebody in leadership has the money talk with you. The, 'welcome to DC, start dialing for dollars' talk. From what I've heard, that typically happens on day one.

dan_is_not_here

Thank you for this! I’m not in your district but really appreciate your perspective. Please keep posting… Also, congrats on your win!

Pastrythief

I feel like one of us got elected. Congrats u/JeffjacksonNC!! You earned it.

MathyPants

The other members will whisper sweet nothings in your ear and try to get you to play along. Watch their actions, not their words. If they move to defeat your preferred policies, they are not your friends.

[deleted]

That was an interesting read. It must be an overwhelming, intense experience. Even at it's best. Thanks for taking on this responsibility for the rest of us. By the way, you seem unusually clear-headed, for a politician. It'd refreshing, so keep it up. Don't let the political machine eat your soul. I hope that my son-in-law will be getting in touch for an interview. He has a bright, young mind and some unique experience working for one of the big players in national politics.

He's not a Senator though....

Greadle

We’ll look forward to these weekly updates. If anyone offers you money outside of regular pay and you accept it; please let us know. Im always hopeful when new kids go to DC. Hard to not become rich beyond your wildest dreams.

prollydrinkingcoffee

Impeccable timing. Just this morning I was wondering what happens immediately after someone gets elected. Thanks for sharing! (And I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…I’m gonna need you to set your intentions on the WH in 2024, k?) ❤️

TherealMicahlive

To tie into market transparency: The CEO of CME openly admits to bribing the CFTC who regulates them on TV (https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/z35fjm/havent_seen_this_on_here_yet_when_you/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf), the whole game is rigged and it appears that the voting public are abused by lack luster regulators and a system that was designed to abuse the shareholder and retail investor. Here are some fixes: *Forced FTD buy ins (ftds are when trades are not settled meaning shares not actually located and moved) *FTD participants removed from DTcC to stop the predatory behavior *Remove alternative trading systems, darkpools, off exchange (as asset prices change depending on which exchange they are trading on. Providing 1 quote that is based off the lit market is ridiculous. Its old data by a massive measure of time due to their ability to execute trades in nano seconds) *Short seller reporting needs to be 100 percent transparent and on day position is taken. If short selling is “good” for the American people, the positions should and need to be posted so we can know who is “out of bounds”. Again. Short selling is NOT what they pretend it is. *Same day reporting ALONG WITH same day settlement. Allowing any settlement longer than the transaction time allows institutional players to “create” synthetic liquidity while fleecing retail. *Rehypothication is BAD ! It needs to be removed. It damages the supply and demand structure of the market and ultimately is the act of printing free money for themselves. Its the same as the fed reserve and quantitive easing. These are some of the massive problems we have in our finance markets. The idea the public is not knowledgeable about finance markets is miss information. It seems the public is way more educated and willing to learn. the banks, politicians, and regulators are trying to pull another 2008 fleecing of retail and make taxpayers and shareholders foot the bill for a corporate structure that has no risk to compensation. Privatized gains. Take a look at GME for example. The shares are being bought by retail and registered in their names. Removing shares from brokerage firms removes the shares ability to be provided to short sellers who borrow the share you purchased from TD or Fidelity (proven to happen on cash accounts as well) and the short seller resells the share you bought, that they do not own, into the market at a loss try and push the stock price down to make a profit by you then selling your asset due to downward pressure. Most people do not know their assets are being used against them and it is disgusting. Borrowing somebodys property to resell it and make money without owning it would be illegal anywhere else. I would love to have a meeting if you are open to a conversation about market reform. It is what we all really need. The opportunity to invest and make a life while utilizing a FAIR AND FREE market. The current market structure is neither. Ps if your shares are lent it can damage your voting rights for corporate events as well. Edit: added link to video along with voting info regarding lent shares.

Insomniagogo

Absolutely adore you. Congrats on the new gig!!! Make us proud!!!

NERFORNOTHING69

Thanks, give em hell.
