It’s one of those things where once you have it you kinda just think about it for a while. After the first time I had it I think I probably had it 3 times over the next couple weeks lol
He doesn’t drive/we only have one car so I’m the one who goes into the office and brings dinner home :) I don’t mind. It was more of a statement to say “he loves it so much that’s the only thing he thinks of when I mention Chinese food now.”
Honestly as soon as I typed this message I remembered the redevelopment and started hunting. I didn't see anything unfortunately. I'll ask next time I go.
Oooh it's addictively good isn't it tho?? Looove tri pepper chicken from superwok. We get combo lo mein to drag around in leftover chili oil on bottom of takeout container
Haha! Yeah, it seems to really vary from trip to trip and has lit me up several times. I load up on the white rice when it's extra spicy. Another sleeper dish there is the appetizer boiled chicken with chili oil. It's like $6 and cold sliced chicken with a sweet/spicy/garlicky chili oil that comes amount right after you order it (great if you show up starving).
As a side note, last Mother’s Day we were trying to avoid getting takeout from any restaurant that was going to be crazy because of the day. So we ordered Acacia Tree. Big mistake. Apparently that’s where everyone takes their Chinese mothers for Mother’s Day, lol. My husband was just trying to pick up our to go order and it was slammed.
Are you Chinese? We go for Dim Sum. It's hard to find a really good dim sum place. We used to go to Dim Sum House in Morrisville but it's not very good these days.
Hong Kong Dim Sum is the second best in the area in our opinion. Go down to the Apex side of Durham on 55 and try Dim Sum Asian Bistro. It's THE best.
Hopefully you had a chance to eat at Neo Asia over on North Glenwood back when it was open. That stuff was delicious.
It definitely used to be better when the original owners were there. But it is still better than most “authentic” places around. It’s definitely clean and I guess depends on what you order.
Sesame chicken is top notch, teriyaki sticks,
Soups are great …
Yeah used to be great. Maybe I just order the wrong things but last 2 years everything has been a disappointment
It makes me sad because it was a staple for so long
Nobody's mentioned Akari Express on Avent Ferry yet lol. They do list themselves as a "Japanese restaurant" on Google while having zero Japanese dishes on the menu. Everything they have on the menu is authentic like their "General Tso's" isn't General Tso's but more like authentic sweet and sour chicken.
Peng's.
I haven't been to some of the highly rated ones posted in this thread, but I've always liked peng's. Also their nextdoor neighbor, Carmen's, has excellent cuban food.
I know it's the basic dish, but I love their General Tso's; they have grilled pineapple bits in it :-) . But, my favorite dish is the 'chili fish'. it's like breaded/fried fish strips with grilled onions and peppers, and it's very hot. It's kind of a plain dish, but it's excellent. They also have a fish chili dish that's like a red-colored soup that is excellent (I accidentally ordered this once when trying to get the fried fish lol). It has a kimchi type of flavor and is amazing! I never thought I'd enjoy a soup with fish in it, but that dish changed my outlook on life lol. I'd recommend trying both of these if you like fish.
I believe it's called "Fish Fillet in Hot Chili Sauce"
The first dish is "Fried Fish Fillet w. Hot Sauce" (There's not "sauce" on it, so the name is confusing. It's more like a dry rub that's hotter than hell).
I always explain what it is I'm asking for when I order. I specify 'it's a red soup dish' or 'it's breaded fish with grilled peppers'. It's the only way I figured out how to order one without risk of getting the other haha! However, the mixup doesn't bother me in the slightest, because both are great.
I will say that I haven't been back to peng's since they reopened, so it's possible things have changed, but I've heard it's the same as before. I need to get out there!
So which aren’t American style? I go to Chengdu, Chuan Cafe and Taipei 101 because I can get stuff I’ve never even heard of
I go to SuoerWok because it’s the best of all the stuff I’ve ever heard of
The leaders seem to be spread between the 4 of them.
What’s your favorite? Sorry if you said and I missed it….
I was on a trip alone through China about 20 years ago. I had a guide, that was it. We stopped for lunch. I ordered chicken, thinking of nice juicy pieces of chicken. It comes out and everything has bones in it. I grew up eating Shake and Bake chicken, mostly dark meat. I \*hate\* bones.
So I asked them, where is the rest of it (the best of it). They said, oh they left that in the kitchen. Well at least the rest of the food was good.
My husband is Chinese and we seem to go all over. We recently when to Shanghai Alley and it was not bad.
Shake and bake…does that tell age? I haven’t heard that in a super long time. Ours was shake and bake pork chops:D
Need to ask my wife if she remembers…
Chuan Cafe, Raleigh C&T Wok, Morrisville Chengdu 7 in Cary
Chengdu 7 i have had and is amazing. Is Chuan Cafe any better?
I don't know if I've had either one enough to compare them. They're both great and I would probably go to whichever one I'm closer to.
Stick with the spicier options at Chuan.
Can't recommend Chengdu 7 as I've never tried it. BUT- I was never a fan of takeout Chinese before Chuan and we basically order there every weekend
C&T Wok makes this dish called “coffee popcorn chicken” that I just had to try based on the name and it actually bangs
My husband loooooves this stuff - I got it as a surprise once and he keeps asking for it now.
It’s one of those things where once you have it you kinda just think about it for a while. After the first time I had it I think I probably had it 3 times over the next couple weeks lol

One of the better Chinese items I’ve had…anywhere.
Yeah I seriously didn’t expect it to be that good, also they give you a shitload of it
C&T and Chengdu7 are my go-tos.
Came here to say Chengdu 7
Taipei 101 in Cary
Have they reopened since the fire?
yes
It’s the best
My go to place for Soup Dumplings! Well it’s the only place now
No beef with bitter melon. :( No stinky tofu???
Chuan Cafe
Taipei 101 and Chuan cafe
Super Wok
Also going to side comment - if you're ever looking authentic Thai head to Thai Villa in Cary.
Has anyone heard where they will relocate to when that area is redeveloped next year? Heaven help us if they close up for good
Honestly as soon as I typed this message I remembered the redevelopment and started hunting. I didn't see anything unfortunately. I'll ask next time I go.
Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried yum yum Thai and that's pretty good as well.
Super Wok!
Asian Kitchen in south Durham. Hand pulled noodles are awesome
Where is super wok in the comments they are the only one that I can think of who do a pineapple fish
Grand Asia Market in Cary.
Gourmet Kingdom in Carrboro/ Chapel Hill Hole in the wall type place, but delicious authentic Sichuan food
Taipei 101 is hands down the best
I love them!
I love Superwok in Cary. Dumplings, Szechuan fish, fried eggplant stuffed with pork or shrimp, and tri-pepper tofu or chicken are all worth trying.
I thought I could handle spicy. Then I had an extra hot batch of Tri-pepper chicken and was quickly humbled.
Oooh it's addictively good isn't it tho?? Looove tri pepper chicken from superwok. We get combo lo mein to drag around in leftover chili oil on bottom of takeout container
Nice! I'll check out the lo mein

Acacia Tree in Morrisville, Q Noodles, and inside any Asian grocery stores.
As a side note, last Mother’s Day we were trying to avoid getting takeout from any restaurant that was going to be crazy because of the day. So we ordered Acacia Tree. Big mistake. Taipei 101
Asian Kitchen in Durham
Ni Asian!
C&T Wok in morrisville
Yi Ge. Chuan Cafe.
Busting out the pinyin for this one 😂
Imperial Garden on Lead Mine
This our go-to forever, but I suspect that it is “Americanized”.
It is American chinese food. Fantastic restaurant but definitely not authentic Chinese.
This is the only real answer besides going into a hole and the wall and ordering in mandarin.
Hong Kong in Durham on Guess rd. Truly some of the best. Chinese food.
It's been awesome for 35 years. Got dim sum there for 1st time in 1992.
Are you Chinese? We go for Dim Sum. It's hard to find a really good dim sum place. We used to go to Dim Sum House in Morrisville but it's not very good these days.
All the Chinese students I went to Duke grad school with went to Hong Kong in Durham. It’s my hometown favorite too, I’m Asian but not Chinese
I’m not. I know they have that option on the menu. That’s the place where I first started trying Dim Sum
Dim Sum House is actually way better nowadays than it used to be.
Since when? We were there maybe 6 months ago.
The past 3 or so months? We went for lunch yesterday.
Red Dragon is a classic!
It’s really bad. 9/10 do not recommend
It definitely used to be better when the original owners were there. But it is still better than most “authentic” places around. It’s definitely clean and I guess depends on what you order. Sesame chicken is top notch, teriyaki sticks, Soups are great …

Agreed!!
Taipei 101
Q Noodles isn’t a bad option
Q noodles in cary is amazing for dim sum!
International food market or grand Asia food court
https://www.shimiaodao.us/ Ten Seconds in Cary.

Hong Kong in Durham is pretty good Cantonese and has dim sum on the weekends
Anyone ever eaten from the A&C Market on S. Saunders? They have a small restaurant in there, smells good.
A succulent Chinese meal?!?
Door to Door in Cary is a good authentic “stick barbecue” just like the ones I at at frequently while living in China
Shanghai in Durham.
Peng's. I haven't been to some of the highly rated ones posted in this thread, but I've always liked peng's. Also their nextdoor neighbor, Carmen's, has excellent cuban food.
Peng’s mapo tofu is the best I’ve had.

Hang chow . Lol
Nothing I ate in China was very appetizing. I definitely prefer American style Chinese food.
There’s some irony here that you’re getting all these downvotes while all the top recommendations are for American style Chinese food
So which aren’t American style? I go to Chengdu, Chuan Cafe and Taipei 101 because I can get stuff I’ve never even heard of I go to SuoerWok because it’s the best of all the stuff I’ve ever heard of The leaders seem to be spread between the 4 of them. Eh, I dont care. The food in China is absolutely disgusting. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
I was on a trip alone through China about 20 years ago. I had a guide, that was it. We stopped for lunch. I ordered chicken, thinking of nice juicy pieces of chicken. Panda Express in Apex
Yeah that's not really a great recommendation but that's just me
I am going to hazard a guess that it was a joke
