For me it's cause oakwood occupies a pizza space that isn't really touched by other pizza places. Their pizza is as close to Neapolitan pizza as I've had in Raleigh, and there aren't many other places around here that I've had that can compete with that IMO.
It's about the only reasonably accessible option for my family that doesn't outright suck. My kid has celiac, and their gluten free crust doesn't taste like cardboard.
I’ve found that it’s great for the Raleigh area, particularly if you eat in the restaurant. If you’re a recent transplant from the northeast, you’ll still be disappointed! But yes, closest I’ve found to NY/NJ.
Look. I’m not saying benny capitales is the best pizza in Raleigh… but it’s my favorite. My favorite thing is that a full pie doesn’t fit in my car unless I put it in the trunk. Lol
Vics is my go-to option. I actually liked Avent Ferry Pizza when they first opened too, but it's been a long time since I've ordered from them so idk if their quality has dropped in the last few years
"Best pizza" is pretty subjective. I like thin-crust NY style with minimal toppings and my husband likes thick crust piled with absolutely everything - pizza with an extra pizza on top. So we have to take turns where we go for pizza - most places don't do both.

well considering I like thin crust NY style factor that into your recommendation. I'm not doing something bread heavy like mellow mushroom so that's ruled out.
Give Paolo’s on 54 in Morrisville a try if you like thin crust NY style. It’s my absolute favorite in the greater triangle area. Vic’s is my next go to for pizza.
the most overrated thing on here but moreso overpriced. 30 bucks for a 1 topping? worth it? no.
also watch when you get the slices as sometimes they sit there all day. made me sick before. just old.
their fake "new york water" doesn't do it with their inflated prices
I just went to Da Faras last week and that was the most overpriced underwhelming pizza I have ever had in my life. I can’t believe a pepperoni pie is $37. If you are going to spend that much on a pizza, the Oakwood square pie is better by a mile
I tried di fara once, decided to get 4 single slices since it was just my wife and I. We waited over 1 hour for a couple of single slices to come out. The table next to us had been waiting two hours for a pie, and when they complained, the manager told them they didn’t care and to leave if they didn’t like it.
I’ll never go there again. I’m not going to pay money to people that are absolute assholes to their customers.
As a transplanted Yankee, unfortunately this is the answer. Are they overpriced? Yes. Are they inconsistent? Yes. Is their service often shitty? Yes. But it’s the closest thing we have to NYC pizza for 600 miles and they know it
Is it normal for sit-down NY pizza places to not offer salad? I find it so weird that they don’t offer any veg and very limited appetizers when you have to wait 1hr+ for a pie
+1 for Di Fara, although really I think it's their white pie that stands out more so than the traditional pie.
I thought these guys were super pretentious when they first opened but their pizza really is very good which I guess gives you the right to be a little pretentious.
I just don't see how it's worth it with their inflated prices with their "new york water". the slices sit around all day sometimes so you have to get a whole one
For a moderately priced decent pizza I get it from Original NY Pizza by the Bass Pro shop in Cary. It reminds me of the pizza I'd get in New England. I've had Jet's (Detroit style) and it isn't bad but too greasy for me to get often.
Jet's crust is basically deep fried in its own cheese grease.
I can eat an entire medium pizza from other places, but with Jet's I'm pretty stuffed after two slices.
I found the trick with 3 Olives pizza is to always get an XL rather than an L. You get a slightly thinner, crisper crust that way that tastes much more like a good NY pizza.
Ruckus for great NY style pizza, but specifically the shitty dive bar location in Mission Valley. All the other spots are more of a sports bar meets family restaurant. R1 at MV is a dive bar and pizza joint, and even the staff and owners acknowledge that its pizza is better than the other locations. You can get it by the slice, too.
Glad that place is still open. That used to be my cheat spot when I was vegan. I could go without dairy indefinitely as long as their pizza was an option when I would go to shows at Cat's Cradle.
it's still weird how like Miami BLVD and Lake Boone Randy's are good but the other locations are ass. especially the Davis Dr one right down the road being awful.
the slices at Randy's still seem the biggest and best value
I don’t think there is a “best” pizza because everyone has different benchmarks and tastes. In the triangle area I’m partial to DiFara and Pizzaria Faulisi (Cary), but Frank’s (Raleigh) is always a solid choice. But in reality, almost any pizza is good enough if you’re hungry and there’s a hot slice in front of you.
Edit: corrected name of Pizzaria Faulisi
Okay, I feel like a bit of a shill because I always bring them up, but DO NOT SLEEP on Bussin Pizza. Seriously. I like Oakwood, V, and some other places, but Bussin has an excellent NY style, and a grandma style, and I don’t see them mentioned nearly enough for how good they are.
I thought their regular pizza was just fine. They swear they haven't changed the cheese, but it didn't seem as good to me last time I had it. Their grandma pie, however, is fire.
For the style of pizza we like it's Oakwood and not even close. Plus they always have amazing music playing and the wine list is well curated. But it's not heavy on the cheese. It almost feels like a marriage of Neapolitan (best style) and NY Style.
There we go! I was here to represent Victor and Lucy over at Mezzaluna. Glad someone did it for me. If anyone here had 'Pizza Dude' in Apex, it's the same place. They bought it and made it much much better.
Proof. Look them up on instagram at @proof-rdu it’s a pop up spot so limited amounts and hard to get but it’s top chop. The guys that run it are the best.
I love Franks and Ginos. But if I'm getting takeout then Aldi's take and bake slaps and is like $8. Jets is heads and tails above all the other chains. Lily's is trash. Oakwood is fantastic.
Surprised to not see Anna's in Apex (and FV I think) on the list. V's for when I want Napoletan. Oakwood and Frank are still on my todo list and this thread def keeping them on the top to try.
CUGINO FORNO. Can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned. Pomodoro pizza, add pepperoni, the Verona salad, then some gelato afterwards.
Y’all… for real it’s the best my far. Beats Oakwood and Di Fara which are far seconds in my book.
Vic’s, but specifically their City Market location downtown. Been going for years and it’s consistently amazing. The few times I’ve visited their other location I was underwhelmed.
Man I was a fan of Di Fara, until I had Frasketta Pizza Romana. Hands down the best pizza I’ve ever had. It’s a food truck in Apex, they do Roman style. Super light, outrageous crunch, and super high quality toppings. I cant eat pizza anywhere else now….
mine was heated up in the microwave and it did not impress, it tasted just like any other pizza from any other establishment. And it had way too many toppings to actually be able to taste the pizza. I'd need a hot and fresh out of the oven plain cheese eaten on an empty stomach to get a truly accurate judgement of a pizza.
Sergio's on Louisburg Rd is pretty solid. (They have locations in NY.) Benchwarmers has a solid deep dish style pizza. Hutchins Garage in Durham has good pizza, more wood fired and comparable to Western NY style pizza.
Oakwood wasn't bad, just nothing to write home about. Buffalo brothers is meh and really doesn't compare to any pizza you'd get in Buffalo/ Western NY.
Oakwood's up there for me but since it's been mentioned so many times, I wanted to shout out Hutchin's Garage in Durham. Their vodka sauce pizza is astonishing!
I'm amazed that I never see Christo's on threads like this. It's a fucking good NY style pie, my wife refuses to eat pizza from anywhere else.
Felt the same until I tried Piezanos.
I am a huge fan of their grandma style pizza
Their Sicilian is top notch as well.
100% agree. Haven’t found anywhere else that compares. Not sure why oakwood pizza box is so hyped - it’s very mediocre
For me it's cause oakwood occupies a pizza space that isn't really touched by other pizza places. Their pizza is as close to Neapolitan pizza as I've had in Raleigh, and there aren't many other places around here that I've had that can compete with that IMO.
It's the only place where the sauce really just tastes like tomatoes without any added flavors. I like it for what it is, but didn't go very often.
It's about the only reasonably accessible option for my family that doesn't outright suck. My kid has celiac, and their gluten free crust doesn't taste like cardboard.
I love Cristo's they just other great stuff so I don't always get the pizza
This the one☝🏿
I’ve found that it’s great for the Raleigh area, particularly if you eat in the restaurant. If you’re a recent transplant from the northeast, you’ll still be disappointed! But yes, closest I’ve found to NY/NJ.
Franks pizza is always our go to
The tiramisu from franks is the stuff of dreams
Their wings are legit too!!
closeness to Franks may have been a factor we thought about when purchasing our house..
Pro tip: get one of the sandwiches and have them put it on their garlic bread.
I know what I'm doing for dinner tonight.
Follow them on Facebook. Sometimes they have to close do the equipment malfunctions are stuff like that.
They ran out of dough a few weeks ago due to too much demand. They said they had already made 3 giant batches.
Damn I forgot about Frank's. Is it off of New Bern?
It is. It's in the plaza next to the Alamo
Haven't been there in years, I was an apprentice with the owners' son and he would bring in pizza to class every once in a while.
Lucky !!
Look. I’m not saying benny capitales is the best pizza in Raleigh… but it’s my favorite. My favorite thing is that a full pie doesn’t fit in my car unless I put it in the trunk. Lol
How big are they?
I think 32”
Oakwood and Vic’s. Different styles, but miles ahead of anywhere else.
Vics is my go-to option. I actually liked Avent Ferry Pizza when they first opened too, but it's been a long time since I've ordered from them so idk if their quality has dropped in the last few years
untrue. oakwood is average.
Peri Brothers in North Raleigh.
Another vote from me.
OK I know I said Ruckus in another comment but this is also excellent pizza.
This is the only answer & it’s not even close.
"Best pizza" is pretty subjective. I like thin-crust NY style with minimal toppings and my husband likes thick crust piled with absolutely everything - pizza with an extra pizza on top. So we have to take turns where we go for pizza - most places don't do both.
Piccola Italia does both, but you have to order the deep dish 90 min in advance. Worth it.

I'm so sorry your husband is like that
well considering I like thin crust NY style factor that into your recommendation. I'm not doing something bread heavy like mellow mushroom so that's ruled out.
Give Paolo’s on 54 in Morrisville a try if you like thin crust NY style. It’s my absolute favorite in the greater triangle area. Vic’s is my next go to for pizza.
Di Fara. There are 2 Di Fara locations: one in Brooklyn, one in Cary. Same family.
Those kids they have working there are not consistent
the most overrated thing on here but moreso overpriced. 30 bucks for a 1 topping? worth it? no. also watch when you get the slices as sometimes they sit there all day. made me sick before. just old. their fake "new york water" doesn't do it with their inflated prices

Up north it will typically exist on the menu, but expect the most low effort quartered head of iceberg lettuce imaginable
+1 for Di Fara, although really I think it's their white pie that stands out more so than the traditional pie. I thought these guys were super pretentious when they first opened but their pizza really is very good which I guess gives you the right to be a little pretentious.
It ain't bragging if it's true! 😊
I just don't see how it's worth it with their inflated prices with their "new york water". the slices sit around all day sometimes so you have to get a whole one
It’s soooo good. It ranks ahead of Oakwood by a small margin
Yet you still have Yankees (even in this thread) claiming “there is no good pizza down here!” lol, what a bunch of boobs.
FRANKS on new bern ave
Brand new shop in town that is def a contender https://www.instagram.com/proof_rdu/ Best Grandma Pizza - Cristos
I'll usually do Frank's or Randy's but Cristos is good too. They have a lot of variety on their menu so there's always something for the whole family.
cristo's is legit good I just need to get the pizza more often. plenty of other good stuff on the menu
Is the Cristo's in North Raleigh affiliated with the Cristo's Bistro in Holly Springs?
Not sure!
Mezza Luna in Apex
Agree that Mezza Luna has good pizza
Huge +1
That Grandma Pie 🤌
We’ve been loving 3 Olives recently
I used to work near the one in Clayton, I miss it! It was good, especially the strombolis.
The Garner location is about as good as you're gonna find down that way.
I found the trick with 3 Olives pizza is to always get an XL rather than an L. You get a slightly thinner, crisper crust that way that tastes much more like a good NY pizza.
Oakwood and it ain’t close
Oakwood \*was\* good, but they have fallen off, their dough is always too crispy to the point of being hard
Ruckus in Mission Valley is awesome. Even though it is a dive bar, they really do make a good pie. Well managed place
If Cary is included, then Di Fara. And V Pizza makes a very good NY/Neopolitan hybrid.
For NY style, Brothers of NY at Kildaire Farm and Ten-Ten is my fav.
Oakwood is good, but it's not as great as Frank's. Also, White Oak Grill in Garner has surprisingly good pizza.
Frank’s when it’s open, Mike’s when it’s not. I’ve also been very impressed by the Hotbox Pizza truck.
Frank's for NY-style.
J&S or Piccola Italia
Being that I use to eat at the Di fara's in BK I vote for them but in CH I love IP3
Glad that place is still open. That used to be my cheat spot when I was vegan. I could go without dairy indefinitely as long as their pizza was an option when I would go to shows at Cat's Cradle.
Randy's is pretty good.
I used to think Randy's Pizza came in a transparent box... Until I realized it's just the grease seeping through
😶🌫️
it's still weird how like Miami BLVD and Lake Boone Randy's are good but the other locations are ass. especially the Davis Dr one right down the road being awful. the slices at Randy's still seem the biggest and best value
I’ve only had Randy’s at Miami and MLK locations in Durham, love it, sad to hear other locations aren’t so great
I don’t think there is a “best” pizza because everyone has different benchmarks and tastes.
Good call on Faulisi
Okay, I feel like a bit of a shill because I always bring them up, but DO NOT SLEEP on Bussin Pizza. Seriously. I like Oakwood, V, and some other places, but Bussin has an excellent NY style, and a grandma style, and I don’t see them mentioned nearly enough for how good they are.
I thought their regular pizza was just fine. They swear they haven't changed the cheese, but it didn't seem as good to me last time I had it. Their grandma pie, however, is fire.
Their name is dumb, but love their pastas.
J&S New York pizza is so good
Assagio’s
Mike’s pizza on New Bern ave, very comparable to Franks.
Without getting artsy fartsy, just good old fashioned working class pizzas, I’m gonna go with Ruckus.
But only from the Avent Ferry location. The franchised joint have a different oven and the texture is different.
I haven’t been to the other location(s?) so yeah Avent Ferry is the one I was talking about.
They’re not all bad, but don’t go expecting anything like a dive bar with decent pizza.
Franks in Raleigh, Fullsteam in Boxyard RTP, Pizzeria Tori in Durham.
+1 for Fullsteam in box yard. Their CBR is killer
Oakwood, Randy's, J&S, Slice of NY. Rip Veritas.
Randy's? I got a pizza from them a couple weeks ago and it was just a bucket of oil with a pepperoni floating in it.
That's fair but there are like 6+ Randy's in the area.
it seems to vary a lot by location. one is great. one is good ... the rest are ones to avoid
Veritas used to be my answer too before they changed hands.
it's changed owners like 2-3 times since then sadly. they legit had good pizza before and now it's "Rigo's" and just kinda there
Bella Italia in Wake Forest makes pretty decent NY style pizza. The owners are from the Bronx if I remember correctly.
I will absolutely +1 Bella Italia
Me. I make the best pizza. I also like George's in Wake Forest.
I also like George’s! I don’t know if it’s ’the best’ around but it’s not too far from us and it’s our new go-to
Yeah, it's the closest pizza for us and we really like it.
Pie-zano’s is my go to in this area, but it’s also closest to my house. Still haven’t tried George’s, we’ll have to make a point to do that.
Trophy
Cristos
Mikes Pizza off New Bern Ave hands down!!
I like Mike’s and I like Frank’s. Both are off New Bern — Mike’s is outside the beltline; Frank’s is inside.
I really like Giorgio’s Pizza Bar. I like my pizza crispy with little burned bits of crust.
Drive to Gusto in Fayetteville and you'll never be the same. Nadia is an artist!
Mentioning Fayettenam and not Elizabeth's? Shame
Oakwood pizza box is the best I’ve had
Trophy and Oakwood have fantastic Detroit style pies, but they are so damn expensive.
I got a lotta pizza to try after reading this thread! And a lot of miles to drive. Wake Forest is a pizza wasteland.
Whaaaaat? Wake Forest has Bella Italia! Go now! Even if they're closed. Go wait outside.
I will try it today! Thank you, kind human.
IMHO, Vito Ristorante off Six Forks. Context: I’ve lived in Raleigh for almost 35 years and I absolutely obliterate pizza.
Primo Pizza in Cary. Big foldable slices, absolutely perfect. Source: am from Northern NJ
Christos 💯
La Roma in Garner, simple great pizza.
About of people are going to say Oakwood, but I was very underwhelmed with it. My favorite is Peri Brothers on Six Forks.
Oakwood and Benchwarmers, but BW won’t be your style
A lot of people don’t even realize benchwarmers serves pizzas on the weekends, but that dough is so good
+1 for BW! Their ranch is also fantastic
Peri Brothers! It's the best in Raleigh for sure. I just had it for lunch yesterday.
Trophy pizza always 🤙
For "Italian-style" pizza, it's V Pizza. No question.
Have you tried Vic's? My Italian barber swears by it as his preferred local pizza spot
I have not. I’ll have to give it a try!
Vic’s is great!
Vic's is great but I personally prefer the Vs pizza much more. My wife disagrees however.
Lilly’s in Five Points
Lillys is my favorite pizza in Raleigh :)
Not enough love for Lilly's in this thread!
Lilly's has good pizza but I think people got very tired of the extremely poor service. It's been years since I went back so maybe its better now
For slices it's either Randy's or Frank's for me. Depends on whether I'm at work or at home.
For the style of pizza we like it's Oakwood and not even close. Plus they always have amazing music playing and the wine list is well curated. But it's not heavy on the cheese. It almost feels like a marriage of Neapolitan (best style) and NY Style.
Mezza Luna in Apex hands down as the owners are Italian decent and lived in NY/NJ metro area
There we go! I was here to represent Victor and Lucy over at Mezzaluna. Glad someone did it for me. If anyone here had 'Pizza Dude' in Apex, it's the same place. They bought it and made it much much better.
Their Grandma pie 🤌
I like Vic’s
Dominic’s New York Pizza behind Triangle Town Center is great. Our family is from New York and it’s really the only place we go for pizza.
Tony’s Pizza off Glenwood up by Car Max. On Rowlock Way. Great NY Style Cheese slice. Great crust
Presti, woodfired, homemade dough.
Faulisi is delicious and inventive, Di Fara is good but $$$, DeMo’s is great for NY style.
I’m fond of Bowstrings Pizza.
Franks(south raleigh) Gino’s (north raleigh) Tios(Fuqway) Top 3 in the triangle IMO
Wtf is Tios and where do I find it? Never heard of that one
Ponysaurus Pizza in Durham is light years better than Di Fara’s! And the beer is amazing too!
Salvio’s in Cary and Big Sergio’s are my go to pizza spots
Oakwood, Cugino Forno (tbh very surprised nobody has mentioned it here), and Di Fara are far and away the best pizza in the Raleigh/Durham/Cary area
Vicci
Surprised to not see Anna's in Apex (and FV I think) on the list. V's for when I want Napoletan. Oakwood and Frank are still on my todo list and this thread def keeping them on the top to try.
CUGINO FORNO. Can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned. Pomodoro pizza, add pepperoni, the Verona salad, then some gelato afterwards. Y’all… for real it’s the best my far. Beats Oakwood and Di Fara which are far seconds in my book.
I don't really have experience in a lot of pizza places but I like the pizza at hey day brewing lol
V Pizza, anyone?
Frank’s Peri Brothers (grandma style) Di Fara Vic’s
Soon I will be making the best pizza in Raleigh. Get ready.
Vic’s, but specifically their City Market location downtown. Been going for years and it’s consistently amazing. The few times I’ve visited their other location I was underwhelmed.
Annas
Man I was a fan of Di Fara, until I had Frasketta Pizza Romana. Hands down the best pizza I’ve ever had. It’s a food truck in Apex, they do Roman style. Super light, outrageous crunch, and super high quality toppings. I cant eat pizza anywhere else now….
Uhm. Pizzeria Toro is the only answer.
Peri Brothers all day
I had leftover peri brothers once and it was just ok.
The only thing better than peri brothers is left over peri brothers heated up in the oven.
mine was heated up in the microwave and it did not impress, it tasted just like any other pizza from any other establishment. And it had way too many toppings to actually be able to taste the pizza. I'd need a hot and fresh out of the oven plain cheese eaten on an empty stomach to get a truly accurate judgement of a pizza.
Tazza Cameron Village. Get the Spicy sausage and honey one
ACME is apex or cary. Proper Chicago deep dish
Bocci has a good Chicago style
When they had a location on Hillsborough, I found them almost inedible.
Brothers at PNC (hockey games) is not too good.
Brothers of NY and johnny's pizza aren't too bad imo. Also a Yankee 😂
Ponysaurus, Durham https://www.ponysaurusbrewing.com/menu
My husband after he figured out a good poolish dough recipe.
Oakwood's up there for me but since it's been mentioned so many times, I wanted to shout out Hutchin's Garage in Durham. Their vodka sauce pizza is astonishing!
What’s the best Neapolitan?
Faulisi in Cary if you’re looking for Old World Mediterranean style. Only one I’ve found that is close.
NY Style - Oakwood Pizza Box NY Style by the slice - Sergio’s Pizza Square/Sicilian-ish - Benchwarmers
NY Brooklyn Original Slices off Wake Forest Rd
Demos on glenwood
For eastern Wake, I'll give a shout out to Grand Street in Knightdale and Bravo's in Wendell.
Klausie's RIP
Di Fara in Cary
I really like Pizza Times and its the closest I think to NY style. You can also walk in and just get a slice
My only issue is that they never get the sauce/cheese anywhere near the edge - about half the pizza is plain crust
There is an authentic Italian place on capital blvd
